    Décryptage et interprétation des sur-énoncés délexicalisés : une approche linguistico-sémiotique du magazine « L’Assiette au beurre » (1901-1912)

    This article analyses the language of the satirical magazine “L’Assiette au beurre” (1901-1912) from a linguistic-semiotic perspective. This periodical uses satirical illustrations and scathing texts to criticise the society of its time, highlighting the political tensions and social inequalities of the Belle Époque. The focus is on the lexical détournement of the texts accompanying the illustrations, a phenomenon in which expressions or linguistic elements are borrowed from one context to be used in another, creating a humorous or ironic effect. The study observes how these lexical détournements can lead to specific socio-cultural references (Sablayrolles 2009: 17). Within this framework, we consider two levels of interpretation, both linguistic and cultural, in order to fully understand these wordplays from a semiotic perspective. The article also considers the importance of speakers’ prior knowledge in understanding these phenomena, showing that language goes beyond the simple association of words with specific meanings, encompassing broader linguistic structures and cognitive schemas.Cet article analyse le langage du magazine satirique « L’Assiette au beurre » (1901-1912) d’un point de vue linguistico-sémiotique. Ce périodique utilise des illustrations satiriques et des textes cinglants pour critiquer la société de son époque, mettant en lumière les tensions politiques et les inégalités sociales de la Belle Époque. La réflexion se concentre notamment sur le détournement lexical des textes accompagnant les illustrations, un phénomène où des expressions ou des éléments linguistiques sont empruntés à un contexte pour être utilisés dans un autre, créant ainsi un effet humoristique ou ironique. L’étude observe comment ces détournements lexicaux peuvent conduire à des références socioculturelles spécifiques (Sablayrolles 2009 : 17). Dans ce cadre, nous prenons en compte deux niveaux d’interprétation, à la fois linguistique et culturel, pour comprendre pleinement ces détournements dans une perspective sémiotique. L’article considère également l’importance des connaissances préalables des lecteurs dans la compréhension de ces détournements, montrant que le langage va au-delà de la simple association de mots à des significations spécifiques, englobant des structures linguistiques et des schémas cognitifs plus vastes

    Enjeux traductifs de l’alternance codique français-italien dans le roman Belle Infidèle de Romane Lafore

    Code-switching is a linguistic phenomenon that manifests through juxtaposing two different linguistic systems in the same discourse. Over the last decades, code-switching has been subject to various attempts at definition and still represents an obvious challenge for translators. The present paper aims to analyse translation issues related to code-switching in the novel Belle infidèle by the French writer Romane Lafore, published in 2019 by Éditions Stock. Code-switching is regarded as one of the main hallmarks of the text inspired to Lafore’s experience as a translator. In particular, the coexistence of French and Italian alternating in the narrative represents a significant stylistic feature of the novel. From a linguistic point of view, this feature makes the text a rich source of reflection and, concurrently, a crucial issue for translation. The study looks at strategies adopted in the Italian translation, starting from the observation that the language used in the source text to recreate the alternation of codes (Italian) coincides with the language of the target text. Hence, the aforementioned aspect represents a considerable translation challenge. Therefore, the most significant difficulty in the translation process is the attempt to maintain the linguistic discrepancy of the original text. Findings shed light on the choices made to recreate the textual dynamism of the source text, highlighting the limitations and advantages of the results obtained.Objet de diverses tentatives de définitions, l’alternance codique est un phénomène linguistique qui se manifeste à travers la juxtaposition de deux systèmes linguistiques différents dans un même discours, ce qui représente un défi évident pour le traducteur. La présente contribution se propose d’analyser les enjeux traductifs de l’alternance codique dans le roman Belle infidèle de l’écrivaine française Romane Lafore, paru en 2019 chez Éditions Stock. L’alternance des codes représente l’une des marques principales de ce texte qui s’inspire, entre autres, de l’expérience de traductrice de R. Lafore. Sur le plan formel, en effet, le trait stylistique particulièrement significatif du roman est la coexistence de la langue française et de la langue italienne qui s’alternent dans la narration. Cette caractéristique fait du texte un grand espace de réflexion sur le plan linguistique et représente, parallèlement, une problématique extrêmement intéressante sur le plan traductif. Nous observerons les stratégies de traduction adoptées dans le cas d’une traduction vers l’italien partant du constat que la langue utilisée dans le texte original pour recréer l’alternance codique (l’italien) coïncide avec la langue du texte cible et que cet aspect représente certainement un problème de traduction considérable. La plus grande difficulté à laquelle le traducteur est confronté est de réussir à ne pas annuler l’écart linguistique de l’original. Nous examinerons les choix effectués pour recréer le dynamisme textuel du texte source, en soulignant les limites et les avantages des résultats obtenus

    The narrative function in José Cardoso Pires’ novel, O delfim, is embodied in an attitude, in which looking is a form of distancing; not an entering into things, but a moving away from them through vision as thought. This, however, is not, paradoxically, a way of emptying the interpretative capacity that the text possesses of its knowledge of the world through its representation; but, on the contrary, it is the attempt, ironically Piresian, to give a body, a physicality to the word as a ghost, as an appearance of the intimate evidence of things and beings.A função narrativa no romance de José Cardoso Pires, O delfim, encarna-se  numa atitude, na qual o olhar é uma forma de distanciamento; não um entrar nas coisas, mas afastar-se delas através da visão como pensamento.     Galician and Italian in diachrony: new verbs in the 20th century

    Na presente investigación estúdase a aparición ó longo do s. XX de novos verbos (que comezan pola letra B) en galego e italiano. Aplicando a metodoloxía de traballo común nos observatorios de neoloxía das linguas romances e dende unha perspectiva contrastiva, revisáronse tanto dicionarios monolingües coma corpus de referencia para comprobar cales son os verbos que sitúan a súa primeira documentación no s. XX. Obtivéronse 41 verbos galegos e 55 italianos, que se estudaron polo miúdo e comparáronse cos verbos presentes en dicionarios específicos de neoloxismos. Finalmente, conclúese que o método é válido para o obxectivo buscado, pero coa necesidade de que, para que o resultado sexa fiable, dicionarios e corpus cumpran unhas características mínimas que, alcanzándose para o italiano, non se dan a día de hoxe en galego.The aim of this paper is to study of the appearance during the 20th century of new verbs (starting with the letter B) in Galician and Italian. Applying the common work methodology in the neology observatories of the Romance languages and from a contrastive perspective, both monolingual dictionaries and reference corpus were consulted, to verify which verbs place their first documentation in the 20th century. 41 Galician and 55 Italian verbs were obtained, which were studied in detail and compared with the verbs present in specific dictionaries of neologisms. Finally, it is concluded that the method is valid for the objective sought, but with the need that, for the result to be reliable, dictionaries and corpora need to meet some minimum requirements that, although achieved for Italian, is not the case for Galician

    Pretendemos aportar nuevas pautas para delimitar los criterios que se emplean para asignar género a las voces tomadas de otras lenguas que carecen de esta categoría gramatical. Expondremos las conclusiones del análisis de más de 600 contextos distintos con sustantivos de la lengua inglesa incorporados recientemente, con amplio uso y difusión, a la lengua española y que no han sido adaptados ortográficamente a esta lengua. En algunos casos, se han detectado variantes ortográficas de las palabras inglesas, prueba de su inestabilidad formal en español y de su neologicidad. Los contextos con anglicismos neológicos han sido extraídos del vaciado de 127 ejemplares diferentes de tres medios de prensa escrita. Para el análisis del género asignado a los sustantivos hemos empleado dos criterios: 1) el criterio sintáctico colocacional o combinatorio, basado, tal como se recoge en las gramáticas, en la concordancia del sustantivo con otras palabras, que aparecen en el contexto, de otras categorías lingüísticas y diversas terminaciones. Tales concordancias nos permiten determinar el género (masculino o femenino) que ha sido asignado al sustantivo neológico, y 2) el criterio semántico, basado en la recurrencia a la naturaleza del referente. Esta fue determinada tras hallar el equivalente español del referente o por una paráfrasis definitoria del mismo. Se ha recurrido, cuando se trata de sustantivos lexicalizados en inglés, a las definiciones registradas en diccionarios de estas lenguas. La conjunción de criterios nos ha permitido trazar las conclusiones que expondremos en este artículo, que consisten en el establecimiento de las pautas que se vislumbra que se han seguido para adaptar morfológicamente al género estos sustantivos ingleses empleados como voces neo- lógicas en contextos en español.We intend to provide new guidelines to define the criteria used to assign gender to words taken from other languages that lack this grammatical category. We will present the conclusions of the analysis of more than 600 different contexts with nouns from the English language recently incorporated, with wide use and diffusion, into the Spanish language and that have not been orthographically adapted to this language. In some cases, spelling variants of English words have been detected, proof of their formal instability in Spanish and of their neologicity. The contexts with neological anglicisms have been extracted from 127 different newspapers. For the analysis of the gender assigned to the nouns we have used two criteria: 1) the syntactic collocational or combinatory criterion. This criterion is based in the concordance of the noun with other words, which appear in the context, of other linguistic categories and various endings. Such concordances allow us to determine the gender (masculine or feminine) that has been assigned to the neological noun, and 2) the semantic criterion, based on the recurrence of the nature of the referent. This was determined after finding the Spanish equivalent of the referent or by a defining paraphrase of it. When it comes to lexicalized nouns in English, the definitions registered in dictionaries of these languages have been used. The sum of these criteria has allowed us to draw the conclusions that we will present in this article. We intend to provide the establishment of the guidelines that can be seen to have been followed to morphologically assign the gender (masculine or feminine) to these English nouns which are used as neological voices in Spanish contexts

    ‘Places of time’ in the corpus ISW. A linguistic analysis of the interplay between places, emotions and memories

    Il presente lavoro ha come obiettivo di ricerca l’analisi della connessione tra specifiche categorie di luoghi (cfr. Flinz/Ruppenhofer 2021) ed emozioni (cfr. la connessione tra “luoghi di transito ed emozioni” in Flinz/Leonardi in stampa) nel corpus Emigrantendeutsch in Israel: Wiener in Jerusalem (ISW). Come già ampiamente dimostrato, infatti, i luoghi e gli elementi spaziali, in quanto punti di ancoraggio per la memoria (Casey 1993: 172), sono profondamente intrecciati con i ricordi che emergono durante la narrazione e la dimensione emotiva (cfr. Leonardi 2016). I luoghi concentrano quindi in sé eventi ed esperienze che vengono ricordati dagli intervistati durante l’attività mnestica; così facendo, non vengono solo evocate vecchie emozioni, ma ne emergono anche di nuove. In particolare, prendiamo in esame la categoria ‘luoghi tipici del tempo’, andando a indagare sia la tematizzazione sia l’espressione delle emozioni a livello linguistico (cfr. Indeed, as has been demonstrated, places and spatial elements, being anchor points for memory (Casey 1993: 172), are deeply intertwined with the memories that emerge during narration as well as with the emotional dimension (cf. Leonardi 2016). Places thus enclose events and experiences that are recalled by interviewees during the mnestic process. Old emotions are re-evoked and new ones emerge, which can be thematised, described and/or even expressed. In particular, we will analyse the category ‘typical places of’, focusing on both the thematisation and the expression of emotions at the linguistic level (see Fiehler 2011)
