The purpose of this paper is to establish a clear relation between social justice and education, recognizing the present relevance of Paulo Freire’s critical pedagogy, especially considering the challenges the modern world’s inequalities present us with. Examining Freire’s pedagogy fundamental concepts of conscientization, banking education, emancipatory education and education perceived as the practice of freedom, we acknowledge education’s intrinsic political trait and the urgency of educating subjects as socially engaged citizens committed to building a more just and more democratic society, in which everyone is given the same opportunities. By rejecting the idea of neutrality associated with education, we emphasize the importance of the ethical commitment it entails, as well as the practice of critical thinking of which Freire’s pedagogy is an undeniable example.O objetivo deste artigo é estabelecer uma relação clara entre justiça social e educação, identificando a pedagogia crítica de Paulo Freire como uma proposta educativa relevante e atual, atendendo sobretudo aos desafios que as desigualdades sociais do mundo moderno nos colocam.
Children in residential care are one of the groups most affected by school failure. The analysis of the school pathways of Portuguese students shows that the probabilities of educational success are crueler for these children. It also showed that the possibility of finishing a 12-year schooling is a reality that happens to very few. Since the situation of school failure and exclusion is especially serious, it is argued that the work of teachers, which is carried out not only from pedagogical practices and differentiated actions that can take into account the cultural and socio-economic differences thatoften characterize these children, must also take into account the serious psychological and affectiveproblems that mark them. Thus, and using a theoretical framework of critical pedagogy and with the support of Paulo Freire, we argue that, against all expectations, the future of some of these children is revealed as being an “untested feasibility”. Based upon fieldwork of participative observation developed over several years, in a theoretical-methodological framework in which education is associated with socio-anthropology, this text intends to give an account of some examples of these “untested” from the critical analysis of experiences lived by these children.
In praise of light and shadows
The interaction of light and shadow has always fascinated architects, and even more so since Le Corbusier’s famous quote from 1923, published in Vers une Architecture, in which he describes architecture as “the learned game, correct and magnificent, of forms assembled in the light”. This game, which thus motivated the painters of Purism and Cubism – among whom Le Corbusier would come to be included – contributed in great part to the definition of the aesthetic ideals of the artistic avant-garde in the West in the first half of the 20th century. Associated with the purity of crystal, with the idea of total transparency, and with the blurring of the boundaries between the interior and the exterior, this very same game served as the conceptual premise of (and later as a critical challenge to) the architecture of the Modern Movement.
The counterpoint to the purist and crystalline impetus of modernism would emerge, and indeed one of many, by way of “In Praise of Shadows”, a reference to the book written in 1933 by Junichiro Tanizaki. In this work, the author examines how Oriental culture (in contrast with Western culture) has always sought to shield the interior space from the invasion of light and from exterior views by use of trees, porches, patios, shutters, and translucent sliding doors or dividers (the Japanese shôji). It is not by accident that many of these traditional elements would once again come to be adopted by Western architecture from the late 1950s onward in its search for vernacular values deriving from a broad variety of cultures.
Having studied in these seminal years of critical review of the Modern Movement and coinciding with the publication of the Survey on Regional Architecture in Portugal – (Inquérito à Arquitetura Popular em Portugal) (1955-1961), the young architect Álvaro Siza learned from Fernando Távora – his former teacher and mentor – to appreciate not only the effect of light on forms (Távora himself admitted to being an avid admirer of Le Corbusier), but also to stroll about the shadows in traditional habitats (Távora would gather important teachings from Japanese architecture during his grand tour in 1960 and filtering it through another great influence of his: Frank Lloyd Wright).
These different “phantom-characters” would come to also occupy the imagination of the young Siza, and to them he added references to Alvar Aalto, Bruno Taut or Adolf Loos, at the moment of considering the relationship between the individual and the collective space, between the domestic and the monumental scale, between the window and the city.
The photographic work of Mark Durden and João Leal focusing on Álvaro Siza’s work in Porto – now published by Scopio Newspaper – goes in search of not only this same game of shadows upon the target surfaces of the façades and the interiors of the buildings but also the multiplicity of transparencies and penumbras that unfold through their ample glazed windows.

This article discusses the medicalization of children and adolescents undergoing schoolingin a critical perspective, addressing its ideological and deterministic character linked to a naturalizinginterpretation of the phenomena and related to the disregard for the conditions of social and historicalreality. In the face of the pathologizing aspect of the medicalization of schooling difficulties, it criticallydiscusses the supposed ADHD based on Vigotski’s historical-cultural approach. As a result of thequalitative research carried out, it presents and discusses narratives of those responsible for the studentssent for evaluation and monitoring in health services for not adjusting to school standards. By reflectingon “the problem is always at school”, it is intended to contribute to the critical reading and ruptureof the medicalization of education.O presente artigo discute a medicalização de crianças e adolescentes em escolarização em uma perspectiva crítica, ao abordar seu caráter ideológico e determinista vinculado à interpretação naturalizante dos fenômenos e relacionado à desconsideração das condições da realidade social e histórica.

This article is driven by the experiences of the authors in institutional supervision, a modalityof team building carried out with Social Assistance Policy workers who assist teenagers who are distantfrom their families, living temporarily in institutional services, or who comply with socio-educationalmeasures for committing an infraction act. The social imaginary of the places of destination to adolescents from underprivileged social strata has reproduced the figure of the “deviant” and hegemonicconceptions about the ways of working with them: processes based on goals to be accomplished thatdisregard their uniqueness and life trajectory. The other, taken within the logic of medicalization andnormalization of existence as the holder of problems to be solved by a specialist submitted to theachievement of goals, has been the subject of institutional supervision work, especially with professionalsinvolved with socio-educational measures. These experiences have triggered the issue explored inthe article: the relationship between this rationality and the historical elements of socio-educationalmeasures in Brazil and the processes of the services executing this politics in the city of São Paulo. The work of institutional supervision, propeller of these theoretical questions, is a strategy that aimsto create cracks in such logic.
Positive discrimination policies adopted by Brazilian state universities include ethnic-racial, socioeconomic and educational background aspects and have favored the access of students from lower socioeconomic conditions, and particularly of women, a segment that already represents the majority of higher education students in the country. From this point of view, this research aimed to analyze the results of Affirmative Action Policies (PAA) adopted by UFBA (Federal University of Bahia) according to the concept of cognitive justice and its contribution for an effective democratization of higher education, with specific focus on the female segment. The present study is part of Abdias Nascimento Academic Development Program (CAPES/MEC), aimed at the analysis of the impacts of the expansion of higher education in Brazil since the PAA. It is a qualitative investigation based on narrative interviews with students from different knowledge areas. The results point out the diverse aspects permeating the process of academic affiliation: among others, stereotypes, prejudice, discrimination, diversity, inclusion, female wisdom. With the poor and afro descendant women’s participation in higher education, borderline and subaltern experiences and reflections, formerly excluded and silenced – such as the knowledge produced in the realm of traditional wisdom – have been approached.
Light Catcher
Among his remarkable performance-based short films made in the garden of his family home, two films show the artist holding a mirror to both catch and reflect sunlight back to the camera and viewer. Such performances provide a fitting allegory for his relationship to the medium of photography. As a photographer Peter Finnemore is someone who catches and plays with light.
Light is key to the pictures made in his home place in rural mid Wales, Gwendraeth House. The photographs relay the intimacy he has with his childhood home, which has been in his family for generations. Finnemore has been photographing his home for thirty years and his pictures are full of hints and suggestions, traces of those who live and lived there. With people’s passing, he is now its sole occupant and the house has become more and more a portrait of his own imagining, his dream space.
Finnemore photographs feelingly and describes his home as “a dreaming centre to divine and survey the spaces between darkness and stars”. Working with black and white film and the chemical-based printing process his richly toned prints explore the opposition and gradations between non-light and light, negative and positive, with all their symbolic implications. Like film, the house and its rooms are seen as receptive and responsive spaces. In Dream Traces a partly decorated wall above a bed is animated both by the gestural traces of darker paint upon it and lighter rectangular areas where posters and pictures were once attached. The wall is not blank but a field of different energy forces, the slow photographic effect of the darkening of the wall around the absent pictures against the more immediate brushmarks of house paint at its edges. The wall is also suggestive of an awakening state, the sense of something not fully coming into consciousness. This is in contrast to the relative order and geometry introduced by the wooden bars of the bedstead and the clarity of the singing and piercing detail of the white dot at the centre of an eye, painted on glass. This Greek mati, used to ward off evil, becomes the focal point of this picture and cue to many objects and elements in his pictures that are felt to be imbued with energies and powers beyond their material form.

50 years of the Pedagogy of the Oppressed: Brief considerations on the text and context
Impotent due to its role as an international servant, this is the continued time of Pedagogy of the Oppressed, in which form and content are married in the celebration of a ‘praxis’ that, in an aesthetic plunge, transcends itself into an awareness of the world. The ‘act of coming to know’ becomes an act of love in Paulo Freire\u27s poetic and political language. How could it be otherwise if this language has the spices that give it its revolutionary dimension
