Digital spectacle and its impact on architecture and the architectural image

    No full text
We live in a world of digital excess, and architecture is a part of this: on the one hand, abundant and instantaneously available references, and on the other, a medium that takes an enormous amount of time to be finalized. As some argue that architecture is too slow for the digital revolution1, the recent resurrection of the collage appeared as a viable strategy to critically reclaim architecture’s place: one that, unlike simulations of binary realities, was to be a raw and ambiguous like an “open project” even if computer-simulated. Due to its success, however, the collage has been taken over by the market for its “arresting novelty”. As a commodity, it compensates for architecture’s slow pace: faster to produce and consume, less related to the disciplinary process of the conception, more evocative, and less ideological. To some, the “collage era” represents the return of a more prosperous, stronger profession2, as others claim they are blank postcards of a post-idealistic age, one where built quality rarely holds up.(...

Replacing urban identity: the disappearance of Sha’biya Al Safa Neighborhood

    No full text
The meaning of identity of a place is manifested in its genius loci, or rather in the hidden spirit of the place itself. The immanent value of the built environment represents its physical and materic sedimentation, as well as the collective memory testifies to the emotional stratification of the space itself. The spatial component involves not only the sphere of urban form and public spaces, but also the private dimension of domesticity. It is a process of accumulation of the historical memory of a place, through fragments of shared community life as well as of family and domestic identities. In this sense, the theme of loss of urban historical memory in newly developed contexts, in cities such as Dubai for example, appears relevant. Furthermore, how in such areas the built environment is suddenly altered by the dynamics of real estate. This contribution documents, also by means of photography, the case of the disappearance of Sha’biya Al Safa Neighborhood (also known as Sha’biya Al Shorta). Neighborhood built to house the low-income local population, as part of the social housing program wanted by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan since the end of the 1960s. These photos, taken in September 2018, document the state of the neighborhood shortly before its demolition, when its inhabitants had already abandoned this place. Instead, the pictures taken in February 2021 describe the current state of the area: an infrastructured tabula rasa ready for real estatedevelopment. The images narrate the loss of daily living in the neighborhood. They speak of a community, which has now disappeared, characterized by a vibrant everyday life with cultural values rooted in the place and tradition. It is a visual testimony that identifies the urban peculiarities of the neighborhood in its morphological and typological dimension, as well as reveals the traces of the family life of its inhabitants. This case documents, once again, how urban transformations based on demolition and new construction inevitably lead to a zeroing of the original social identity and of the collective memory connected to the place itself

It will be difficult to understand the full impact of the digital on architecture without the internet as its privileged territory; they are, to some extent, inseparable, in the same way that it become inseparable in how architects consume and produce architecture today. Although not always organized, the internet has become architecture’s biggest archive, one made up mainly of images. Using Luca Galofaro’s montages and their dissemination as a paradigmatic example of a contemporary architectural practice that takes full advantage of the internet as a medium, this text problematizes both the conception and consequences of the digital image on the discipline. The former, how images are consciously constructed, as a kind of graphic hupomnemata for the one who “ingests” the work of others and incorporates it into his own; the latter, the effects to be constrained to a specific medium. If one of the internet’s characteristics is the ability to support simultaneously redundant and contradictory discourses propagating the same type of content within each “niche”, how can we bypass the mashed-up state that the discipline has become? Is it possible through the fruitful use of the digital medium or are we expecting more than what it has to offer? More than taking sides for or against the internet, perhaps we may ponder one that does not consider it in terms of exclusivity – pixel vs. paper or analogue vs. digital –, but in complementarity with each other, taking the advantages of different media in order to build a more consistent discipline, one that is able to go beyond temporary nodes of aligned interests

This article analyses the current normative context of the Portuguese teachers’ qualification as the native language in Brazil, investigating the approach given to multimodality, to multiliteracies, and to native language in recent national regulations for initial teacher training and basic education. It is a qualitative documentary research based on thematic categorical and cross-sectional analysis of results. From the dialogue between thinkers in education and language sciences, it appears that the treatment of Portuguese as a native language presupposes that teaching must be corroborated by the sense that this conception brings together. For this, it is necessary to expand the dialogue between the normatives to improve the qualification of Portuguese teachers, its teaching performance, the appropriation of linguistic multimodality and the multiliteracies constituting national multicultures and cultural innovations in the teaching and learning processes. Recebido: 2/06/2021Aceite: 20/10/202

This article aims to analyze the impacts of the diagnostic of Attention Deficit HyperactivityDisorder (ADHD) on the life of a child. Initially, it approaches how ADHD appears in psychiatrymanuals. Then, it criticizes such concept in the light of the discussions around childhood medicalization Hereupon, it presents methodological aspects of the research done in the city of Salvador, Bahia,Brazil, through a qualitative case study. Taking advantage of intense field research, the followingprocedures were adopted: participant observations, document analysis, and partially structuredinterviews. The long interaction with the child and her environment made it possible to realize thather journey is crossed by a complex and delicate process as of the constitution of ADHD diagnosticthat impacts on a medical and psycho-pedagogical intervention that imprisons school and familyperception. Against these obstacles, the child insists on being, provoking on the other new perspectivesabout her way of living. It is expected, with this article, to contribute to the critical debate about themedicalization of childhood, favouring understandings that respect the diversity that it envolvesO presente artigo tem por objetivo analisar os impactos do diagnóstico de Transtorno de Déficit de Atenção/Hiperatividade (TDAH) na vida de uma criança.

The power of imagination: An interview to designer Hans Thyge, from Design, Interior & Branding Studio Hans Thyge& Co based in Norsminde, Denmark

Fátima Pombo (FP) and Hans Thyge (HT) FP The motto of your Design Studio is that ‘it all starts with the power of imagination. Every design should tell a story, on its own and as part of a bigger context’. What is the meaning for you of such statement? HT Let me tell you a story that enlightens the meaning you are asking for. Many years back I was driving down to the Cologne furniture fair with two employees. We were driving late evening and started to discuss a new competition we were invited to take part of. It was about an ergonomic chair made of plywood for the contract market. In the night we discussed advantages and principles. After some talks back and forth, we suddenly discovered an interesting static principle, which could move the pivot point of the backrest up in the lumbar area. Immediately we felt that we had discovered something compelling while driving in the dark without pen and paper. The interesting thing was that we had elaborated an idea using our imagination and the spoken language even the matter was about three-dimensional form. The day after I flew to Poland after a long day at the fair, and I quickly sketched the principle down on the back of my ticket. The idea remained intact and worked after some experiments with prototypes. We often talk about “The power of imagination” which has become the motto of our small design studio. Design is about being able to imagine and sense stories and elements carried out in materials, with colours and surfaces. Theoretically there is no difference between writing a book, composing a piece of music or designing a chair. Whether it is the pencil or the very sophisticated 3D modelling programs we are using to elaborate our ideas, it always comes down to our ultimate ability to see and feel the object for our inner eye. Without that, designing becomes a superficial act dethatched from our personal life. A genius violinist once was asked where he got the ability to play so beautiful and he answered: “It is the sum of my life and all I see and experience everyday”. Our power of imagination is a sum of the cultural input we are experiencing, or in other words all which our senses see and feel through our life. It is not only the capability of playing the notes or designing a chair……the character and ingenuity of the expression is a matter of who we are, which will always be reflected in the things we create.

The authors make conceptual reflections, based on the real history of some children, on the roots of the processes of pathologization and medicalization of life and the ways in which these processes are articulated with prejudices and intolerance of differences, and with the silencing of questions and of utopias. Inscribed in the positivist paradigm, they contain alienated and alienating concepts about science and knowledge, the world, subjects and life itself; through diagnostic-labels and reports, they have been doubly instruments of violence, either because of the violence they provoke by abstracting the subject and removing life from the scene, or by concealing situations of violence experienced by children and adolescents, constituting an alibi that calms consciences, silences conflicts and exempts everyone from their responsibilities.

This work builds a space to problematize a research and extension Brazilian project, developed since 2016, focusing on in-service teacher training on the matter of disability, inclusionand classroom aid practices. The discussions presented emerge from disability studies intertwinedwith narratives related to early childhood education practices from the 2019 meetings’ participants. Aknowledge of experience was acquired through both classroom experiences and demedicalization studies allowing us to question the ways we think about the relations between disability, childhoodand teacher education and to confront the logic of medicalization, by approaching other perspectives. The analysis of school practices shows the strength of biomedical model invading the relationshipbetween adults and little children and, thus, brings to presence the need to challenge the hegemonicview with the social model of disability. This perspective enables us to question the production ofdiagnosis generated before actual encounters with the children. The analysis of the fragments presentedreveals growth, movements, tensions and overcomings. At the end, some questions are presented onmedicalization of childhood in education in pandemic times.

This article is the result of a master’s dissertation study that brings medicalizing discoursesinto the daily lives of early childhood education as a central issue, and how special education iscaptured by such discourses. By medicalization we mean the process of artificially transforming social, historical and political issues into medical issues. The text addresses the notion of discourse forFoucault as an essential concept, bringing questions about normalization, subjectivation and knowledge//power relations. In order to discuss the notion of medicalization, we brought authors who defenddifferent theories, such as Moysés and Collares, who are Brazilian references. This paper consists ofa case study that uses the principles of cartography as a tool, and its research plan was a MunicipalCenter for Early Childhood Education of the Municipality of Vitória, ES, Brazil. The theoreticalinvestigative path resulted in two problematization movements: the first one on the medicalization ofsupposed disorders/disabilities, and the second one on the medicalization of the disability condition. The analysis of these movements demonstrates how the medicalization of childhood occurs despitethe consumption of medicines, both through the creation of labels, as well as through the medicalrepresentation present in the referrals for special education of children who deviate from the standards.
