This article aims to show the effect of heterarchical associations between public and private educational policies for Brazilian Professional and Technological Education, based on recommendations from the Regional Project of Education for Latin America and the Caribbean. Thus, we have used the historical-dialectical as the theoretical and methodological approach with a qualitative focus and the documental analysis associated with social media analysis. International organisations, such as the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, World Bank, and United Nations, have a primary role in formulating educational policies in a globalised capitalist world under the neoliberal optics and supported by the New Public Management. It becomes evident the organisational character of the Regional Project of Education for Latin America and the Caribbean in media, in a heterarchical disposition that comprises different social sectors, with the possibility of working in power management beyond the division between public and private organisations, whether they are at local, regional, or global scope. In Brazil, the document reveals an alignment of the educational reforms of High School Education and Common Curriculum National Basis with the School Business.
Interdisciplinary research reorienting the perceptions and understanding of Modern architecture and landscape heritage through an enriched documentary utilization, namely of photography and film
“ [When] I am taking a photograph, I am conscious that I am constructing images ratherthan taking snapshots. Since I do not take rapid photographs it is in this respect likepainting which takes a long time where you are very aware of what you are doing in theprocess. Exposure is only the final act of making the image as a photograph.”1

With this 8th Volume of Sophia Journal, we are continuing our third thematic cycle “Landscapes of Care” and our interest is to understand and explore through diverse visual practices, with a specific interest in photography and film, how the physical environment is understood and shaped by a diverse field of study, practices and cultures. This means, besides other things, to better understand the relationship between culture and space and to explore how culture, beliefs, behaviours, and practices, interact with and shape the physical environment of different territories and their architectures, cities and landscapes, as well as to acknowledgecontemporary discourses and usages of landscape concepts2.As we had already explained3, the concept of landscapes of care has increasingly been adopted by diverse areas of study, from health geography to the arts and architecture. It allows us to comprehend architecture, city and territory as living and inclusive organisms, constituted by multifaceted landscapes with complex social and organisational spatialities, as well as exploring the concepts of space and place for care within a transdisciplinary research environment.

Types: Evidence of the Typical
The pieces in this section share an interest in the typical and in the ways in which photographycan be used to provide evidence of that very typicality. Photography’s capacity to recordevidence has been central to its practice and theory from the outset, founded on the premise(and the promise) of an indexical relationship between the thing recorded and the record made.Of course that relationship could always be distorted, manipulated or fabricated by technicalmeans – with increasing ease and regularity in the digital era – but even such distortions wouldonly serve to point up the dominant assumption of fidelity, of the photograph simply recordingand conveying the facts. This is not to say, however, that such photographs would lack aestheticquality or conceptual interest. Mike Mandel and Larry Sultan’s seminal 1977 publication ‘Evidence’enduringly demonstrated this through a careful selection and sequencing of photographsculled from numerous government agencies and research institutions. Nominally objective, thepictures were unfailingly strange, sometimes surreal, sometimes disturbing and often forlorn. These were, as Sandra S. Phillips notes in her essay for the revised edition, ‘photographs madefor the purpose of record’, but by virtue of what they deemed worthy of recording, and how thatrecord was composed and framed, much was revealed, both about the unavoidably expressivecapacities of the medium and about the prevalence of scientific and technical developmentwhich typified the era.1Photographic evidence operates in distinct but related ways in each of these four pieces. There is a shared affirmation that the making of photographs serves to confer significance andvalue on something hitherto overlooked, ignored or misunderstood. In Jasna Galjer’s carefullyconsidered essay, she traces how the Kravica Children’s Health Resort in Croatia - a strikingpiece of socialist-era architecture by Rikard Marasovic – is being reframed in terms of its culturalmeaning and value through photographic and filmic projects. Despite, or perhaps because of,being neglected and in disrepair, the complex demands to be incorporated into the collectiveconsciousness, to allow its past to be reconciled with a potential future. This is as much to dowith its overt formal properties as its layered history in use, both of which are captured in thephotographic and filmic projects which Galjer discusses.

Towards a collaborative notion of Utopia
scopio Architecture, Art and Image publication benefits from a renewed international Editorial Team and Scientific Committee and is now focused on disseminating the themes of Architecture, Art, Image (AAI). It has been integrated into a dynamic information space called scopionetwork with the collaboration of the Contrast project. Despite these changes, both the print and the online publications ensure the continuity of scopio’s original graphic identity and brand. This open-access, annual, and research-orientated publication aims to offer critical, explorative and informative text targeting an interdisciplinary audience and providing a new critical space for discussion around the universe of AAI. It seeks, in particular, to debate / (re) think Architecture, Art and Image in our times.Scopio AAI will be organised annually around a central theme, the focus of the first issue being Utopia. We want to challenge the ordinary understanding of this concept by exploring new ways of looking at Utopian thinking within today’s complex societies.scopio AAI – Utopia aims to explore a notion of Utopia based on the idea that we need to have ambitious visions for the future and propose operational paths, creatively and collaboratively, towards transforming our society. We are interested in works by authors who believe that Utopia can be both a source of inspiration and a tool to create a better world. As advocated by Ernst Bloch eight decades ago in The Principle of Hope, because utopias offer visions of a better future world, they should be seen as part of our current reality and not be excluded from it. In this sense, utopias are inspiring images that guide us towards real possibilities and help us forge true social transformation. We are interested in works that highlight the potential of Image as a medium that crosses borders and dislocates boundaries across different Architectural and Artistic subject areas. We call, in particular, for works by multidisciplinary teams inspired by broad notions of creativity, innovation and cybernetics as drivers of social and institutional co-evolution processes, exploring the potential of the world of Utopia and Image to inventively question and address cross-cutting problems affecting Architecture, Art and Image.

Techniques of Discovery: Cryptography and Design
Among the core technologies forming the rich archaeology of computation, cryptography is perhaps a subject that has received little attention in architectural studies thus far. However, there are fruitful considerations to draw from a closer inspection of the vast repertoire of techniques that cryptography has developed over a period of about seven centuries. First of all, a deeper historical perspective will help frame cryptography as a technology for discovery rather than solely protecting military and diplomatic secrets. Secondly, these considerations can be of relevance to design as they offer thoughts for both conceptual reflections and practical applications. At a conceptual level, the symbolic, discrete computation accompanying the evolution of cryptographic methods – such as Alberti’s one in 1467 – marked a radical departure from the iconic semiotics of analogue machines. The non-mimetic nature of symbolic computation provided the technological means to significantly widen its range of applications and enhanced speculative thinking. Understood along these lines, cryptography found more general applications beyond concealing diplomatic secrets to provide a rigorous method for inquiry into unknown domains in order to make ‘noisy data’ intelligible. Finally, symbolic computation also provided more advanced techniques for abstraction that were also instrumental for constructing notational drawings, whose emergence coincided with the introduction of more advanced mathematical instruments in the renaissance.
The essay will discuss the key paradigmatic moments in the history of cryptography such as the polyalphabetic techniques proposed by L. B. Alberti in 1467 and the use of binary cryptography by Francis Bacon in 1605. Despite their distance from the present, these experiments provide a useful segue into a discussion on how the notion of cypher as a conceptual instrument accompanying the introduction of Machine Learning models in architectural and urban design.

Cultura e educação: Como operam as pedagogias culturais?
Contemporary cultural configurations have required an attentive look at the pedagogical that spreads in society through cultural artefacts. Assuming that ways of living are learned in instances of culture, this article seeks to understand how the concept of cultural pedagogy, especially gender and sexuality pedagogy, is developed among researchers in the field of Education based on a systematic literature review on Brazilian Master’s dissertations and Doctoral theses between the years 2011 and 2021. By resorting to the 42 Graduate Studies in Education in Brazil that argue podcasts, soap operas, films, and magazines, among other artefacts, such as cultural pedagogies, I point to the expressive subjectivising capacity evident in the production of identities and ways of life. The conclusions of this article, which focused specifically on four researches that link cultural pedagogies to theories of gender and sexuality, point to a tendency to open up what we understand by pedagogical from the contributions of Michel Foucault, especially inspired by scientific production from southern Brazil. We learn through multiple means, emphasising the need to expand our theoretical-methodological repertoire in searching for new perspectives for pedagogies.
The relationship between schooling, professional qualification, wage income, and quality of life is a recurrent theme in the academic literature, being the object of studies in several areas of knowledge. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the associations between the level of schooling and diversification of technical training with and among capoeiristas’ wage income and quality of life. The survey used a quantitative, cross-sectional approach in which capoeira professionals of both sexes living in Brazil remotely completed sociodemographic and quality-of-life questionnaires. The results showed a positive association between the level of education and diversification of technical training, and capoeiristas’ wages. In other words, each increase in education is associated with a 2.9 times greater chance of an increase in wages, while each increase in technical training is associated with a 34.2% chance of an increase in wage income. Finally, although there was no association with wage income, capoeiristas showed a high quality of life regardless of income. There is a need for investment in the mechanisms associated with the phenomenon of capoeiristas’ purchasing power in order to foster the social growth of capoeira.
Brazilian education has always been on the agenda in political debates and academic studies, and it’s pointed out as the time/space in which historical social and racial inequalities persist. This reality directly interferes with prolonged school trajectories, access, and permanence in higher education. In this text, we work with students who had access to public universities with the advent of affirmative institutional and governmental policies and social inclusion implemented in the early years of this century. The study aimed to understand schooling trajectories and biographical paths of female university students from poor families, who graduated from public schools and declared themselves of African descent, an underrepresented segment in higher education institutions, characterised as a white territory. From an interdisciplinary perspective, which advocates interaction between two or more disciplines and makes possible the complementarity of conceptions, social justice, cognitive justice, and intersectionality are discussed. The investigation had a qualitative design, based on the study of multiple cases as a research strategy, and used socio-demographic questionnaires and reflective interviews. The analysis of the results highlights the contradictions experienced at the university, the difficulties related to student permanence and affiliation processes, and the mobilisation of university students to conquer spaces and visibility in their respective courses. Affirmative policies impact academic production because these “new students” bring a diversity of knowledge and different issues that demand other dialogues with the hegemonic knowledge.
