This study investigated the use of Mother Tongue Based Multilingual Education (MTB-MLE) strategies by teachers at Primary school level in Chongwe Rural District. The study is informed by Ruiz’s three language orientation theory which views language as either being a resource, problem or a as a right depending on the users’ language ideologies and conceptualizations. Adopting a descriptive research design, the study used qualitative research approach through focus group discussions, classroom lesson observations and document analysis. The sample size was thirty teachers of Primary from ten schools of Chongwe District. The participants were sampled using purposive sampling while thematic analysis was used to analyse the data. The findings revealed that most teachers in Chongwe District used a variety of MTB-MLE strategies in the classroom including translanguaging, picture stories, songs and real objects to engender learners’ multilingual identities. Based on these strategies, it was clear that majority of teachers recognized learners’ multilingual backgrounds and used these strategies in order to help diverse learners to access learning. In so doing, teachers negotiated the monoglossic language policy in an attempt to make their lessons learner centric. The study recommended that Ministry of Education (MOE) should come up with a deliberate policy where teachers from time to time are capacity built on how to handle learners in multilingual contexts. In addition, teachers should be more liberal and innovative in the classroom by making use of other minority languages in their multilingual language practices rather than limiting multilingualism to official languages

The aim of this study is to assess the consequence of business wisdom on staffs The objective of this study is to examine the impact of business wisdom on staff normative commitment. The researchers employed an explanatory research design with a quantitative approach. A probability sampling method was used to select participants, resulting in a sample of 245 respondents from various strata through Stratified Random Sampling Technique. Data were collected using a structured, self-administered questionnaire, with 230 questionnaires ultimately analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The Pearson correlation analysis revealed a statistically significant positive relationship between all four dimensions of business wisdom—namely involvement, consistency, adaptability, and mission—and staff normative commitment. Notably, adaptability demonstrated the strongest positive and statistically significant correlation with normative commitment, while the mission dimension showed a positive but statistically insignificant effect. Based on these findings, the researchers recommend that organizations maintain business wisdom to enhance normative commitment. This can be achieved by recognizing and responding to both external environments and internal stakeholders, as well as involving staff in the decision-making process. Additionally, encouraging innovation through rewards can foster creativity among staff members

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LEAN PRACTICES AND PERFORMANCE OF PARASTATALS IN KENYA

    Get PDF
The ability to identify changes in an environment and appropriately respond by choosing a convenient management approach is critical to the success of parastatals. Globally, lean is one of the management concepts that ensure this. There is limited evidence linking these in Africa, and particularly in Kenya. From several financial performance reports including 2021/2022, the performance of some parastatals in Kenya is below average (2.40). They register low performance yearly thus suggesting insufficient implementation of lean practices. Past studies investigated the effect of individual constructs of lean, leaving the composite effect unattended. This study sought to analyse impact of Lean Practices on performance of parastatals, and was guided by Institutional theory. A census approach was applied with a target population of 34, comprising 102 respondents, out of which 12 respondents were sampled using a cluster technique and 86 for the actual study. Questionnaires were administered to collect data and were analysed using descriptive statistics. Cronbach’s alpha tested reliability as content validity tested validity. Sample results show a coefficient of 0.818, implying that the instrument is reliable. The findings reveal that Lean had 71.7% significant effect on performance. The study concludes that lean has a significant and positive impact on the performance of parastatals in Kenya and recommends that parastatals in Kenya should continue to prioritize the implementation of lean practices as a key strategy for enhancing performance

    No full text
Social media serves as a powerful tool for politicians to engage with voters and drive the conversation in their favor. Still, the authenticity and accuracy of online information can be questionable as there are currently no mechanisms in place to regulate or sanction the spread of false or misleading information on social media, making it even more challenging to combat the proliferation of political propaganda. Also, the prevalent availability and lack of mechanisms to checkmate it allows individuals and political actors to spread misleading information which causes a significant problem. Therefore, the trust of this paper was to examine the role of social media platforms specifically Facebook and Twitter, as well as the gaps and challenges in identifying the dissemination and amplification of political propaganda in Nigeria. The study utilized qualitative research and was analyzed descriptively. The study revealed that social media promotes political propaganda and manipulates the perception of the electorate which changes the outcome of elections.  Ultimately, the paper argues that a comprehensive approach is needed to regulate the spread of political propaganda on social media platforms in Nigeria, which include; the creation of digital literacy programs that focuses on media literacy and online etiquette, deeper cooperation between the Nigerian government and social media platforms to curb the spread of political propaganda, the establishment of legal frameworks to punish offenders, mitigating political propaganda are some of the recommendations highlighted in this study

COMPARATIVE CASE STUDIES ON THE DIFFERENT APPROACHES IN APPLYING ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN SMART CITIES FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

    Get PDF
Urbanization is a prevailing trend globally. More than 50% of the world’s population currently live in cities and the proportion is likely to grow to 70% by 2050 (World Bank Group, 2023). Amid this urbanization wave, smart cities have seen a noticeable rise since the 2010s (Almihat et al., 2022). Two other trends are picking up pace alongside the growth of smart cities. Firstly, there is greater focus on sustainable development since all United Nations (UN) member states adopted the seventeen global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 2015. Secondly, the advent of artificial intelligence (AI) transforms how people go about their daily lives and how cities function, including in pursuing the SDGs. Against this backdrop, there is value to study how AI could augment sustainability outcomes in smart cities. Specifically, this paper hypothesizes there are differences in how smart cities across regions apply AI to pursue sustainable development and seeks to uncover potential factors influencing such differences. The main methodology in this research is a set of comparative case studies involving three regions that have made notable progress in smart cities development – China, Singapore, and the United States. The findings from the comparative case studies validate the hypothesis that there are perceptible differences in how smart cities across regions deploy AI to pursue the SGDs. A potential factor for such differences could be regional sociocultural influences – an aspect that urban planners and policymakers should pay more attention to when applying AI in smart cities to improve sustainable development outcomes.&nbsp

    Get PDF
This paper studies the link between information and communication technology (ICT) diffusion, financial development and economic growth in the panel of 3 Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, namely, Oman, Qatar and United Arab Emirates from 2008 to 2021. Using the system GMM in a panel data analysis, we showed evidence of a positive association between financial development and economic growth. We also showed that ICT acted as a complement in the finance-growth relationship. The study recommends harmonizing public and private sector investments for a synergistic impact on ICT infrastructure and investing adequately in the financial system to promote economic growth in GCC countries. Economic policies would be approved to provide incentives and subsidies to guarantee affordable ICT services to disadvantaged peoples. In addition, training programs focused on improving digital literacy to enable all population groups to use digital platforms for financial services are recommended
