Effectiveness of Potassium Diformate on Feed to Improve Immune Performance of Goldfish (Carassius auratus L.)
This research aims to determine the optimum potassium diformate (KDF) dosage which was added to feed to increase the immune status of goldfish (Carassius auratus L). This study was conducted from September 31 - November 15, 2019 at the Laboratory of Aquaculture and Molecular Biotechnology Laboratory of the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, University of Padjadjaran. The research method used is the experimental Complete Random Design (CRD) with 4 treatments and 3 replications. The treatments are A (without KDF/control), B (0.1% KDF), C (0.3% KDF) and D (0.5% KDF). The observed parameters are survival rate, total leukocyte count (white blood cells), total erythrocyte count (red blood cells) and gross clinical sign. Observations were made after 30 days of KDF and post-test challenge by Aeromonas hydrophila for 14 days. Data on the number of total leukocyte count and total erythrocyte count were analyzed using F test and Duncan\u27s advanced test at a 95% confidence level, while the gross clinical sign data were analyzed descriptively. The results showed that the KDF 0.3% was the optimum dose and was very effective in optimizing the performance of the goldfish immune system optimally, seen from the number of white blood cells and red blood cells which experienced the highest increase of 23.48% and 9.30%. After the challenge test, fish that were given KDF 0.3% had the highest survival rate of 46.67%. In addition, the process of recovering the number of white blood cells and red blood cells can be faster than other treatments, with a value of 12.85×104 cells mm3-1 and 0.96×106 cells mm3-1, marked also by the healing of clinical symptoms in the morphology of goldfish
The Influence of Indian Ocean Dipole on Production of Tembang Fishing (Sardinella fimbriata) at Sunda Strait Indonesia
Tembang is a pelagic fish which is important in Indonesia and the development on the Sunda Strait. The Indian Ocean Dipole could affect oceanography and at the same time will affect the population of fishes. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of IOD and oceanographic factors on the catch of Tembang fish. This research was conducted in the Sunda Strait waters by looking at the Dipole Mode Index (DMI) and oceanographic ocean conditions such as sea surface temperature and chlorophyll as well as the production of fish catches for 11 years from 2008-2018. IOD affects the catch of Tembang fish by 35.8%. Temperature influences the catch of Tembang fish in the Sunda Strait by 9.48%. Klorofil-a influences the catch of Tembang fish in Sunda Strait by 38.6%. DMI, Temperature, and Chlorophyll affect fish catches by 26.9%
Proportion and Total of Commodities Blue Swimming Crab (Portunus pelagicus Linnaeus, 1758) Catches in Gebang Mekar Village, Cirebon Regency, West Java Using Crab Gillnet and Collapsible Crab Trap
Blue swimming crab (Portunus pelagicus) is one of the high economic value commodities which causes increased efforts to catch blue swimming crab in Indonesia. The effort of catching continues to increase the blue swimming crab resources in the nature that has decreased. Cirebon Regency is one of the largest blue swimming crab fishing centers in West Java with a total value of blue swimming crab production in 2017 by 7,347 tons/year. This research was conducted to determine the selecitivity level of the crab gillnet and collapsible crab trap based on the proportion and total of catches obtained in Gebang Mekar Village, Cirebon Regency. Research was conducted in September 2019 – October 2019 in Gebang Mekar Village. For this research we used are primary data; collected directly during the observations includes catch type and weight of the catches and then interviews with several crab gillnet and collapsible crab trap fisherman and secondary data; data from official agencies and some literature. Our research suppose the moonlight phase effect of the blue swimming crab catch. Based on the research, it can be concluded that the crab gillnet with 3.5 inch mesh size and collapsible crab trap that operated in Gebang Mekar Village may be called a selective fishing gears but crab gillnet is more eficient as compared to collapsible crab
Addition of Mackerel Fish Head Flavor Powder to Cilok\u27s Preference Level
This research aims to determine the appropriate level of the addition of mackerel fish head flavor powder to obtain the cilok most preferred by panelists. This research was conducted from September to December 2019 at the Fishery Product Processing Laboratory, Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences Universitas Padjadjaran. The method used is experimental with 4 treatment levels of adding mackerel fish head flavor powder that is 0%, 5%, 6%, and 7% of the amount of tapioca flour and wheat flour used. The parameters observed were the level of preference for appearance, aroma, texture, and taste of cilok. Based on the research results it can be concluded that the most preferred cilok was obtained from the treatment of adding mackerel fish head flavor powder as much as 6%
Marker-assisted Selection in Fish: A Review
The important economical traits like body growth, resistance to diseases, meat quality, etc. highly influence the profitability of food animals including fishes. The main target of every selective breeding programme is to produce improved traits offspring’s. However, improvement of performance traits through traditional phenotype-based selection needs several generations to optimise these characters. Marker-Assisted Selection (MAS) is a type of indirect method of selection of better performing breeding individuals. MAS is beneficial when the traits are difficult, expensive to measure and has both low heritability and recessive traits. MAS facilitates the exploitation of existing genetic diversity in breeding populations and can be used to improve desirable traits in livestock. MAS depends on identifying the link between a genetic marker and Quantitative Traits Loci (QTL). The distance between marker and target traits determines the association of the marker with the QTL. After identifying the markers linked to QTL, they can be used in the selective breeding programme to select the brooders having better genetic potential for the targeted trait. Improvement of performance traits through MAS is fast and more accurate and allows us to understand the genetic mechanism affecting performance traits
Histo-toxicity of Corexit 9500 Dispersant on Gill and Liver of Clarias gariepinus (Burchell 1822)
The aim of this study was to assess the chronic toxicity of Corexit 9500 on histology of liver and gill of juveniles of Clarias gariepinus. Range finding tests were conducted over a 96-hr period after acclimatization of the test organisms in the C.P. Powell laboratory in the University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria. The test organisms 10/treatment were exposed to the following concentrations of Corexit 9500; 0.00 ml/L, 0.0125 ml/L, 0.025 ml/L and 0.05 ml/L in triplicate. Liver and gill were excised from fish every week for histological assay using standard methods. The LC50 at 96 hrs was 0.115 ml/L. The growth in length and weight of C. gariepinus was significantly higher in the control than the test treatments (p<0.05). Hyperplasias, necrosis of epithelial cells, inflammation of the secondary gill lamella and hypertrophic primary gill lamella were observed in the exposed gills. Hepatic lesions in the liver tissues of the fishes exposed to Corexit 9500 were characterized by hyperplasia, narrowing of the central vein and vacoulations. The alterations observed in the liver and gill tissues indicated that Corexit 9500 may have interfered with transamination and metabolic processes, with the possibility of affecting the physiological functions of the fish in an aquatic environment
Ecological Approach of Plankton Responses to Water Quality Variables of a Tropical River, South-Eastern Nigeria: A Bio-indicator-based Community Assessment of Idundu River
In the present study, the water quality variables of the Idundu River were assessed by evaluating the Plankton community. Three sampling stations: Station 1 (minimal fishing), station 2 (artisanal fishing area/ cluster of human settlements) and station 3 (fisheries landing area, dredging) representing regions along the stretch of the watershed with considerable economic importance and anthropogenic activity, were selected within the period of six (6) months. The study determines plankton distribution, diversity and some water quality variables of Idundu River, and how they influence plankton abundance. The results of this study reveal that water quality variables (mean ± SD) of the River were pH (6.526 ± 0.104), surface water temperature (26.224 ± 0.106˚C), dissolved oxygen (1.474 ± 0.135 mg/l), nitrate (0.026 ± 0.001 mg/l) and phosphate (0.015 ± 0.000 mg/l). All the water quality variables assessed were within the acceptable range. A total of 23 phytoplankton species belonging to five families, totalling a numerical abundance of 368 individuals/L were observed. Bacillariophyceae was the most abundant phytoplankton family (63.81%), followed by Chlorophyceae (17.41%), Dinophyceae (7.87%), Cryptophyceae (9.77%), and the least abundant was Zygnemophyceae accounting for (1.08%). A total of 20 zooplankton species belonging to five phyla, totalling a numerical abundance of 140 individuals/L were observed. Rotifera was the most abundant zooplankton phylum (35.69%), Arthropoda (30.62%), Ciliophora (17.79%) and Annelida (12.15%); the least abundant was Nemata (2.85%). Principal component analysis (PCA) for plankton organisms showed that phytoplankton were more homogenously distributed than zooplankton during the study period. Shannon Wiener and Margalef’s diversity index showed that the River is in a healthy condition and the equitability level was high across all the stations, indicating even plankton distribution
Coral Reef Zone Analysis in Development of Segmentation Ecotourism in Karimunjawa National Park
Karimunjawa is one of the main destinations that present underwater beauty that is quite popular. But due to increased tourism activities provide economic benefits but also have a negative impact on coral reef ecosystems so that prudent and sustainable management is needed, these characteristics are felt capable of being helped by remote sensing technology. The purpose of this research is to analyze the coral reef zoning for the development of ecotourism segmentation and the carrying capacity of coral reef ecosystems and to map the condition of coral reef ecosystems in the Karimunjawa National Park area through remote sensing technology. The method used in data collection uses a survey method which is divided into 2 types in-situ conducted on 19th April 2019 to 2nd May 2019 and ex-situ taken for 4 years for coral cover and 1 year for sea surface temperature. By using quantitative descriptive analysis, land suitability results are obtained based on the land suitability index approach and the percentage of coral cover in determining the mapping of ecotourism segmentation areas. The results of this research show that through in-situ approach, data collection in three stations on Sintok and Menjangan Kecil Islands has good coral cover while Cemara Besar is damaged. The appropriate Tourism Conformity Index value is on Menjangan Kecil Island while the other two stations are not so that the carrying capacity calculation is only done on the appropriate and very appropriate island. Inversely proportional through the analysis of the Scenic Beauty Estimation value, Cemara Besar Island which shows a high value while on the Menjangan Kecil Island the lowest. Spatial analysis shows that the fluctuation in sea surface temperature during one year is not too significant and is still limited to the optimum temperature range for coral growth so that it does not affect the conditions causing damage to coral reefs, called bleaching. Looking at the distribution of coral reefs via satellite, over the past 4 years shows an increase in dead coral cover leaving 6,752,802 m2 in 2019
Hanging Ratio Gillnets on Different Mesh Sizes for Mackerel (Scomberomorus commerson): A Case of Pangandaran Regency, Indonesia
Gillnet is a simple fishing gear that is widely used by fishermen in Pangandaran Regency. This study aims to determine the classification calculation of the value of hanging ratio gillnet and the catch of mackerel (Scomberomorus commerson) with different mesh sizes. This research was conducted in January 2019 in Pangandaran Regency, Indonesia. The method used in this research is the survey method. Gillnet used has 2 types of mesh sizes, 3,5 and 4 inch gill nets with each net length of 650 meters (7,312 mesh) and 750 meters (7,384 mesh). Gillnet has 12 meters with a net mesh size of 3,5 inches as many as 135 mesh and a 4 inch mesh size of 118 mesh. Hanging ratio for 3.5 inch gillnet is 0,56 while for mesh size 4 inch is 0,54. Based on these results, it can be concluded that the gill nets are selective. The proportion of catch results shows the number of target fish gill nets with a 3,5 inch mesh size is 20% and bycatch is 80%. The proportion of gillnet catches with a 4 inch mesh size shows main catch of 35,2% while the bycatch proportion is 64.8%
Alternations in Enzyme Activities of Clarias gariepinus Infected with Aeromonas hydrophila and Pseudomonas aeruginosa
Clarias gariepinus were infected with Aeromonas hydrophila and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and blood samples were collected weekly for biochemical analysis to analyse their enzyme activities and pathogenesis for four weeks. The enzymes includes: aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alkaline phosphastase (ALP), acid phosphastase (ACP) and lactate – dehydrogenase (LDH). The fish were distributed in three different groups in triplicates as: control (C1 C2 C3), A. hydrophila (A1, A2, A3) and P. aeruginosa (P1, P2, P3). After two weeks of acclimatization, A1 – A3 were injected with 1.5 ml of 106 cfu/ml of A. hydrophila, P1-P3 were injected with 1.5 ml of 106 cfu/ml of P. aeruginosa, while C1-C3 were pathogen free. At the end of the experiment, it was observed that there was a constant increase, in the enzyme activities of the infected fish, indicating increase in virulence with respect to weeks of exposure but P. aeruginosa had higher pathogenicity compared to A. hydrophila
