Adoption of Integrated Rice-Fish Farming Technology in Ebonyi State Nigeria: Socio-Demographic Characteristics and Availability of Technology
Background: In order to meet the soaring demand for food, there is need for increased food production in Nigeria. Integrated Rice-fish farming is a significant approach to increase food production that will provide social, economic and environmental benefits.
Aim: To describe the socio-economic characteristics of integrated rice-fish farmers and to ascertain the availability of rice-fish farming technologies in the study area.
Study Design: This was a cross-sectional study. 243 farmers were assessed for their socio-economic characteristics and the availability of rice-fish farming technologies in the study area.
Methodology: Primary data were obtained from the field using structured questionnaire. The questionnaire contained questions that address the objectives of the study. Farmers were asked to indicate the rice-fish farming technologies available in the area. Descriptive and inferential statistical tools were used in achieving the objectives of the study in the form of Frequency score, Mean and Percentages.
Results: The result indicated that the majority (68.0%) of the farmers were male while 32.0% were female. The mean age of the farmers was 47 years. The result also showed that 79.8% of the farmers were, 9.5% of the farmers were single, while 10.7% were widowed. The result indicated that majority of the farmers 53.5% attained secondary school certificate, 21.8% had primary education. The result revealed that stocking of carp fish (78.60%), use of pests and disease resistant varieties (74.07%), use of organic fertilizer (61.73%), followed by transplanting of rice seedlings (69.96%) and skills in harvesting of rice before fish(53.50%) were the technologies perceived by the farmers as being the most available in the area.
Conclusion: The majority (68.0%) of the farmers were male while 32.0% were female and the technology that was most available to the farmers was stocking of carp fish.
Recommendations: There is need to encourage more females to engage in farming because female participation will have a positive multiplier effect not only on the family but on the entire community. Federal, State governments and Extension organizations must ensure that farmers are assisted in the use of available technology. The Extension agents should mount more aggressive awareness campaign in the area to enable more farmers embrace the practice of rice- fish farming
Utilization of Waste Lemi Blue Swimming Crabs on Preference Level of Crackers
Lemi is a yellowish product which usually finds under the surface of the cooked blue swim crab carapace. This research aims to determine the number of lemi addition from the utilization of blue swimming crabs waste in crackers that produces the most liked crackers by panelist. This research was undertaken in the Fishery Production Processing Laboratory, Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences Universitas Padjadjaran and Food Technology Laboratory, Faculty of Engineering, Pasundan University in January 2020. The method of research used was an experimental method with the treatment of addition of lemi blue swimming crabs in 15%, 20%, 25%, 30% and 35% based on the amount of tapioca flour with 20 semi trained panelists as a repetition. The observed parameters are physical test (level of florescence), proximate test (moisture content, ash content, protein content and fat content in preferred treatment) and hedonic test (favorite test) based on organoleptic characteristics which include the appearance, smell, textures and flavors. The level of acceptance of crackers are analyzed using a non parametric statistical method Friedman then followed by the Bayes test to discover the best treatment of crackers. The results showed that the addition of a 25% lemi is a more preferential treatment by the panelists
Promoting Color Brightness of Clown Loach (Chromobotia macracanthus Bleeker) by Mixing Red Spinach (Amaranthus tricolor L.) Powder with Feed Stuff
The purpose of this research is to determine the optimal dose of the addition of red spinach powder to artificial feed on the brightness of clown loach. This research was conducted at Aquaculture Laboratory Building 4 Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences of Universitas Padjadjaran from April to May 2020. This research method is experimental with a Completely Randomized Design consisting of four treatments and three replications. The red spinach powder addition treatment used 0%, 2%, 4%, and 6% of the feed amount. The parameters observed are color value as primary data by using Toca Color Finder, while the growth, survival rate, and water quality as support data. Color assessment results were analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis test, if there were significant differences, Z test would be performed. Growth data and survival rates were analyzed using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). Because the F test results were not significantly different, the Duncan test was not carried out. The results showed that the addition of 6% red spinach powder is the best treatment with an increased color brightness value of 5,63
Proximate Composition of Cilok Mackerel Fish Head Flavor Powder
This study aims to determine the proximate composition of cilok mackerel fish head flavor powder. This trial was conducted for two months period at the Fishery Product Processing Laboratory, Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science for the production of cilok mackerel fish head flavor powder, while the cilok proximate test carried out in the Laboratory Application of Chemical and Integrated Service, of the Science-Based Research Center Building Padjadjaran University. The parameters observed in this research are water content, ash content, fat content, and protein content. Based on the findings it was concluded that cilok mackerel fish head flavor powder has a water content of 48.92%; ash content of 2.02%; fat content of 0.07% and protein content of 0.21% respectively
The Effect of Addition of Nilem Fish Protein Concentrate Flour on the Proximate Characteristics of Mochi Cake
Nilem fish (Osteochilus hasselti) is a type of freshwater fish that is widely farmed in West Java. Another application of nilem fish is made into fish protein concentrate (FPC) flour. The addition of fish protein concentrate flour to the mochi cake can affect the proximate characteristics. This study aims to determine the proximate characteristics of mochi cake added by nilem fish protein concentrate flour. This research was conducted from August 2019 - January 2020 at the Laboratory of Fisheries Product Processing, Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, and the Chemical Research and Services Laboratory, Basic Science Service Center (PPBS), Padjadjaran University. The method used in this research was experimental with two treatments, that were the addition of 0% and 4.5% nilem fish protein concentrates from white glutinous rice flour was used. The parameters observed were proximate characteristics including carbohydrate, water, protein, fat, and ash content. The results showed that mochi cake with the addition of 4.5% of nilem fish protein concentrate had proximate characteristics namely carbohydrate content 59.57%, water content 29.93%, protein content 8.71%, fat content 1.41%, and ash content 0.38%
Induced Spawning of the Fat Snook, Centropomus parallelus Poey, 1860 (Perciformes: Centropomidae), via the Application of the Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone (GnRH)
The fat snook (Centropomus parallelus), a catadromous species highly valued for human consumption, is widely distributed along the Atlantic coast of the American continent, from the United States to Brazil. In Mexico, it is common in the waters off the coastal states of the Gulf of Mexico, particularly Tamaulipas, Veracruz, Tabasco and Campeche. As it is important to ensure maturation and reproduction during cultivation under controlled conditions, given that this is inhibited in captivity, the spawning of the Centropomus parallelus was induced in the present study using a dose of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH).
Advanced gonad maturity was observed, while two females in a vitellogenic state reached final maturation with the application of a 50 μg/kg dose of the hormone and the male subjects failed to present spermiation under the application of the same dose
Effect of Stocking Density on Survival Rate and Growth of Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus Linnaeus, 1758) in Round Container with Water Current Combined with Venturi Aeration System
The aim of this research is determine of the optimal stocking density for survival rate and growth of tilapia in round container with water current combined with venturi aeration system. Place of research in the Aquaculture Laboratory, Building 4 Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, Universitas Padjadjaran. The research method used is experimentally with using the Completely Randomized Design (CRD) method which consists of three treatments, there are 15 fish, 22 fish, 30 fish, with five replications. Using water of 15 L per container. The fish used are 3-5 cm tilapia fingerlings. Fish were maintained for 40 days. The feed given is 5% from biomass which is adjusted every 10 days. The parameters observed were survival rate (SR) and observed everyday, daily grow rate (DGR), feed conversion ratio (FCR) and feed efficiency were observed every 10 days. The result was significantly different from the analysis of variance (ANOVA) with the F test at 95% confidence intervals and then using Duncan test to compare the rates between treatments. The results showed that the best treatment was stocking density of 15 fish / 15 L in round container with current combined with venturi aeration system with survival rate of 78.67 ±10.95%, daily grow rate of 3.68 ± 0.12%, feed conversion ratio of 1.19 ± 0.13 and feed efficiency of 85.01 ± 8.97%
Ecology and Partial Restoration of Daha River for Fish Productivity
Daha river, a threatened water body of polluted nature in the Gopalganj district of Bihar was studied for its degradation and possible restoration. The study reveals high rate of sedimentation and agricultural activities, changes in water quality and biotic community. Agricultural activities have led to high input of nitrogen (N) and phosphate (P) fertilizers along with pesticides being used by the farmers. The positives response of restoration practices was observed with partial improvement in fish-productivity due to hindrance factors acting upon severe fish species.The mean concentration of phosphate, nitrate and ammonia corresponds about 0.60-1.40 mg/l, 1.30-2.50 mg/l and 23-43 mg/l in polluted river, while after restoration declines to 0.20-0.48 mg/l, 0.60-1.10 mg/l and 14-27 mg/l, respectively indicating more suitable towards fish productivity. The observations on other water parameters also showed similar trend during partial restoration of Daha river. The cause of algal bloom and other macrophytic population is inorganic ammonia, however, organic pollution is also in polluted state observed as more quantity of ammonia than nitrate especially at site II and Site III during the study period. The concentration of nitrate is much higher than the critical value in polluted river which causes algal diversity and macrophytic vegetation. Therefore, partial restoration of the river helped to enhance fish productivity concluded from this study
KHV Detection Based on Thermal Lysis - Nested PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction)
In the case of common carp (Cyprinus carpio) and goldfish (Carrasius auratus) that were lightly infected with Koi Herpes Virus (KHV), the use of the one-step PCR method was insensitive to detect the presence of KHV DNA. The nested PCR method has been developed for a more sensitive detection system for KHV infection. This study aims to test the sensitivity of one-step and nested PCR methods in detecting the KHV virus in lightly infected common carp to prevent early disease attacks. DNA extraction of the test samples used thermal lysis and PBS (Phosphate Buffered Saline). DNA isolate as a KHV template was used to amplify KHV sequences using KHV-TKf: 5\u27-GGGTTACCTGTACGAG-3 \u27and KHV-TKr: 5\u27-CACCCAGTAGATTATGC-3\u27 primers in the one-step PCR method. The nested PCR method uses two pairs of primers, namely the KHV-TKf: 5\u27-GACACCACATCTGCAAGGAG-3\u27 and KHV-TKr: 5\u27-GACACATGTTACAATGGTGGC-3\u27) and the CEFAS primer pair (5\u27-CGTCGTGAGGAATACGACG-3\u27 and 5\u27- ACCGTACAGCTCGTACTGG-3\u27) for amplification of KHV sequences. The one-step PCR method was insensitive for detection of KHV in common carp and goldfish infected with viruses without clinical symptoms, and was sensitive enough to detect viruses with mild symptoms with a DNA fragment size of 409 bp using TK primers. The nested PCR method was more sensitive in detecting KHV DNA in fish without clinical symptoms with a DNA fragment size of 348 bp using CEFAS primers
Shelf Life of Nori from Eucheuma cottonii with Aluminum Foil Packaging Based on the Accelerated Shelf Life Test Method
This research aims to determine the shelf life of Nori from Eucheuma cottonii in aluminum foil packaging using the Accelerated Shelf Life Test (ASLT) method with the Arrhenius approach model. This research was conducted using aluminum foil packaging to package Eucheuma cottonii nori products in 2 different storage temperatures, namely 25°C and 35°C. Observations were made on the 35th day with a countdown method which included sensory testing and moisture content testing. The data from the observations had analyzed the estimation of shelf life using the Arrhenius approach model. The results showed that the taste quality parameter is a critical parameter that determines the shelf life of Eucheuma cottonii nori using aluminum foil packaging. The shelf life of nori from Eucheuma cottonii using aluminum foil packaging has a shelf life of 2 months 14 days 17 hours
