    The Proximate Analysis of Cakwe with Addition of Nilem Fish Protein Concentrate

    Nilem fish (Osteochilus hasselti) are native Indonesian fish that live in freshwaters, such as rivers and swamps. This research aims to obtain the composition of proximate cakwe with the addition of nilem fish protein concentrate. Proximate parameters observed were water content, protein content, fat content, and ash content using the Association of Official Analytical Chemists (AOAC) method. This research was conducted from March 2019 to January 2020 at the Laboratory of Fishery Product Processing, Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, Padjadjaran University and Laboratory of Chemistry Research, PPBS, Padjadjaran University. The method used is an experimental method with the treatment of 5% nilem fish protein concentrate. The proximate test results showed that cakwe with the addition of nilem fish protein concentrate contained 27.72% water content, 10.42% protein content, 5.36% fat content, and 4.38% ash content

    Addition of Tenggiri Fish Head Flavour Powder on Favourite Level of Crackers

    This study aims to determine the appropriate level of addition of tenggiri fish head flavor powder so that the most preferred cracker product was produced. The research was carried out at the Padjadjaran University fish processing product laboratory from September 2019 to January 2020. The method used was the experimental method with four treatment of adding powder tenggiri fish head flavor 0%, 7.5%, 10%, and 12.5% with 20 semi-trained panelists as replicates. The parameters observed in this study include tests based on organoleptic characteristics including color, aroma, texture, and taste. Data analysis of the level of cracker favourite used non-parametric statistics with a two-way analysis of the Friedman chi-Square test and continued with Bayes method to determine the treatment of adding the best flavor powder to crackers. The results of this study showed that the addition of tenggiri fish head flavor powder influenced the level of cracker preference. Adding 10% flavor powder produces the most favourite crackers

    Determination of Some Engineering Properties of Floatable Fish Feed Obtained from Different Companies

    This research work presents useful information about different floatable fish feeds obtained from different companies, which serves as database for people work intensively in fish farming and help them in solving many problems associated with the feeding effectiveness and feed handling. The main objective of this project is to study some physical and mechanical properties of fish feed pellets of different sizes. These properties included; Density, Moisture content, Surface area, Floatability, Sizes, Sinking velocity, Expansion ratio, Repose angle. The actual sizes of the extruded fish feed used ranged from 3 mm to 9 mm, However, Company 1 did not have 9 mm for producing that size of the pellet. The floatability ranged from 79.51 to 98.00%, the density ranged from 0.03 to 0.08 g/cm3, the moisture content ranged from 8.94 to 29.26%, the expansion ratio ranged from 1.02 to 1.54%, the sinking velocity ranged from 0.008 to 0.1 m/s2, the repose angle ranged from 27 to 38° while the colour of the feed ranged from light to dark brown according to Tables 1, 2 and 3 respectively. The results obtained from the experiment were subjected to ANOVA test using SPSS (Special Packages for Social Science) package. The physical and Mechanical properties of the floatable fish feed obtained from these three companies were significantly different from one another

    Determination of Biochemical Responses of Genetically-male Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) after Replacing Fish Oil with Plant-based Oils in Their Diets

    This study evaluated biochemical responses of genetically male tilapia after replacing fish oil with plant-based oils in their diets. The sources of oils were coconut, olive, crude palm, sunflower and sesame seed. These oils were incorporated at 7% level and were used to formulate five isonitrogenous (42.5% CP) diets. In the control experiment (sixth diet) fish oil was used. Fish were reared in 1 m x 1 m x 1 m floating net-hapa. Feeing trial lasted for 12 weeks. At the end of the experiment, blood samples were collected and tested for serum protein, electrolytes and tissue lipid peroxidation. Results of the study revealed that the ratio of albumin to globulin was statistically similar (p > 0.05) in all fish group examined. The results of serum electrolyte showed that olive oil treated fish recorded the highest (p < 0.05) level. The amount of malondialdehyde (MDA) formed in fish tissues increased (p < 0.05) in sunflower oil group by 69%, 43%, 20% and 32% in the liver, kidney, gills and heart respectively. This indicated that reactive oxygen species may be associated with the metabolism of sunflower oil leading to peroxidation of membrane lipids of the respective organs. However, this level of MDA deposition had not been associated with any negative effects on fish health. Inferences from this study conclusively support the direct use of these plant oils as total replacement for fish oil in diets of Oreochromis niloticus

    A Comparison between Chicken Viscera and Housefly Maggot Cultured from this By-products for Nile Tilapia Diets: Growth Performance, Feed Utilization and Whole Body Composition

    Aims: The feeding trials were conducted to compare the effects of partial fishmeal replacement by two different animal protein sources on growth performance, feed utilization efficiency and body composition of juvenile Nile tilapia. Place and Duration of Study: The study was carried out at the Aquaculture Research Center, Department of Zoology, Faculty of Sciences and Technics, University of Abomey-Calavi for a period of 84 days. Methodology: Three isonitrogenous and isoenergetic diets were formulated containing fishmeal (CD), chicken viscera meal (CVM) and housefly maggot meal (HMM), as partial fishmeal replacement. Commercial diet Skretting (SK) was used as reference diet. All male Oreochromis niloticus with an average initial body weight of 8.65 g were fed thrice a day to apparent satiation. Each treatment was randomly attributed to three replicates. Results: Fish fed all experimental diets showed no effects (P>.05) on survival rate (91.33-96.00 %), condition factor (1.85-1.9), protein efficient ratio (2.05-2.37) and feed conversion ratio (1.21-1.40), although higher values were observed with control diets. Final mean weight and daily weight gain of fish fed HMM diet (88.31 g ; 0.95 g. days-1) were not significantly different from those fed control diets C (88.54 g; 0.95 g/j) and Sk (87.59 g; 0.94 g/j) respectively. Growth performances significantly decreased (P<.05) in CVM group (75.09 g; 0.75 ± g/j). Whole-body protein contents were similar in all groups, whereas lipid content was highest in those fed CVM. Conclusion: The results indicated that 200 g fishmeal per kilo diet can be successfully replaced with 250 g.Kg-1 of HMM without adverse effect on growth and feed utilization whereas CVM inclusion did not perform also well.&nbsp

    Analysis and Diversity of Benthic Foraminifera Based on Test Wall Composition in the Surface of Coastal Sediments from Tunda Island, Serang, Banten, Indonesia

    Tunda Island has become one of the marine tourism spots that is much considered by tourists because it has good coastal ecosystems. To find out the suitablecondition of Tunda Island waters, benthic foraminifera were used in this area. Foraminifera have the potential to be a bioindicator, which can be seen from the distribution, simple anatomy of the body and its ability to form hard shells. The purpose of this study was to determine the abundance and diversity of foraminifera based on shell walls on the surface of the coastal sediments of Tunda Island. This research was conducted on August 2019. Six samples were used in this study to analyze the abundance and diversity of benthic foraminifera based on test walls on the coast of Tunda Island. The analysis showed that only 2 sub-orders were found, namely Rotaliina and Miliolina. The most common sub-orders found in all studied stations are the Rotaliina with an abundance of 55% and 45% for the Miliolina. Calculation of community structure with diversity values ranging from 1.55 to 2.24 and dominance values ranging from 0.13 to 0.38 indicate that environmental conditions are under pressure both naturally and anthropogenically

    Isolation of Probiotic Bacteria from Macrobrachium rosenbergii and Their Antagonistic Efficacy against Pathogenic Bacteria

    The probiotic bacteria isolated from prawn, Macrobrachium rosenbergii was studied for their morphological and biochemical characteristics as well as their antagonistic efficacy against pathogenic bacteria. A total of three probiotic bacteria viz. White Colour Bacteria (WCB), Red Colour Bacteria (RCB) and Yellow Colour Bacteria (YCB) were isolated from intestine of healthy prawn while three pathogenic bacteria viz. PB1, PB2 and PB3 were isolated from infected antennae and muscles of moribund prawn. Depending on their physical and biochemical features, the probiotic isolates were gram-positive, rod shaped and motile bacteria belonging to Bacillus spp. and the pathogenic bacteria were also identified as gram-negative, cocci shaped and motile bacteria fit in Enterococcus spp., Vibrio spp. and Micrococcus spp. The optimum culture conditions of all isolates were at pH 7.0 and 37°C temperature. Results on the antibiogram profile of pathogenic bacteria revealed that majority of the isolates were sensitive (43.58%) or intermediate (30.76%) against thirteen antibiotics. The probiotic bacterial antagonistic activities were tested against Enterococcus, Vibrio and Micrococcus spp.by cross-streak method. The results indicate that the strain of YCB showed inhibitory effects against Enterococcus spp. (5 mm), Vibrio spp. (5 mm) and Micrococcus spp. (3 mm). Similarly, WCB showed inhibitory effects against Enterococcus spp. (4 mm), Vibrio spp. (3 mm) and Micrococcus spp. (4 mm). RCB strains showed inhibition against Micrococcus spp. (3 mm) only, but not against Enterococcus spp. and Vibrio spp. Based on the results, it can be concluded that the isolated probiotic bacteria could be a good candidate to consider for further studies to control the pathogenic bacteria in prawn culture

    Determination of Lead and Cadmium Levels in Water and Fish Muscle in Elshajara Area, Khartoum State-Sudan

    This study aimed to investigate the levels of lead (Pb) and Cadmium (Cd) in water and fish muscle obtained from Elshajara area - Khartoum - Sudan. This area is located near one of the important factories in the country and is also an important fishing site. A total of 60 samples (30 water and 30 fish muscles) were obtained from 3 different sites in the targeted area. The levels of Pb and Cd were measured using Atomic Absorption   Spectrometry. The overall mean level of Pb and Cd in water samples were 0.148±0.0104 µg/l and 0.014±0.002 µg/l, respectively. Regarding the fish samples, the levels of Pb and Cd were 0.28480±0.018 µg/kg and 0.027±0.004, respectively. The levels were below WHO acceptable limits. The level Pb and Cd in water and fish obtained from area B   were the highest because this site is  closest to the factory effluent site and thus the high levels. Adopting proper water disposal systems for factories and other industrial facilities is necessary to avoid contamination of the ecosystem. This may in the long run affect the human health through consumption of food contaminated with such metals

    Potassium Diformateas Feed Additive to Enhance the Performance of Immune System on Giant Gourami Fingerlings (Osphronemus goramy Lacepede, 1801)

    This research aims to determine the optimum dose of potassium diformate (KDF) which is added to commercial feed to improve the immune performances of giant gourami fingerlings. The research was conducted in October – December 2019 in Aquaculture Laboratories and Biotechnology Laboratory of the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, Universitas Padjadjaran. The method used in this research is Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with four treatments and four replications. The treatments are addition of potassium diformate in feed with a dose of 0% (A), 0,3% KDF (B), 0,5% KDF (C) and 0,8% KDF (D).The giant gouramimaintained for 40 days. The observed parameters are total leukocytescount, total erythrocytescount, differential leukocytes, and water quality. The data of total leukocytes, total erythrocytes were analyzed using ANOVA and followed by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test, while differential leukocytes and water quality are analyzed descriptively. The results showed that the addition of 0.3% potassium diformate is the most effective to improve the immune performances of giant gourami fingerlings. During 40 days of treatments, total leukocytes count increased 25% from6.55×104 cells/mm3 to 8.74×104 cells/mm3, total erythrocytes countincreased 10.03% from 1.28 ×106 cells/mm3 to 1.43×106 cells/mm3. Potassium diformate treatment 0.3% was an effective dose to stimulate differential leukocytes of gourami fingerlings are triggered to enhance the immune system

    Growth of Striped Catfish Fingerlings (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus) in Aquaponic System with Fine Bubbles (FBs) Application

    This study aims to determine the growth of Striped Catfish fingerlings (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus) and using Fine Bubbles (FBs) application with various pressures in the aquaponic system. The study was conducted at the Laboratory of Aquaculture, Ciparanje, Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, Padjadjaran University from 18th September to 18th October 2019. The method used in this study was the experimental method using Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with four treatments and three replicates. Treatment A: Control (without FBs), Treatment B: FBs with pressure 4.5 atm, Treatment C: FBs with pressure 5 atm, and Treatment D: FBs with pressure 5.5 atm. This research used water spinach as biofilter. The measured parameters in this study were fish growth, plant productivity, and water quality which includes levels of temperature, dissolved oxygen, nitrate, ammonia and phosphate. The results showed that the highest fish specific growth rate in treatment D is 6.68 ± 0.43%/day with a survival rate of 100 ± 0.00%, the highest plant productivity, with a stem length of 115.03 cm, a weight of 62.75 g, and leaf growth of 30 strands. While the water quality parameters including temperature, dissolved oxygen concentrations ranged from 24.2-27°C, 7.72-7.94 mg / l, nitrate 0.243-0.602 mg /, ammonia 0.001-0.010 mg / l and  phosphate 0.147-0.229 mg / l respectively
