Fishing Vessel Characteristics with Multipurpose Gear to Support Fishing Operations in the Northern Sea of Java, Indonesia (Case Study in Indramayu)
This study aims to analyze the ratio of the main dimensions of the vessel to see the performance of vessels with multipurpose gear. The research was conducted in February-March 2018 at the Karangsong Fish Landing Base (Ind: PPI), Indramayu. The object of research is the vessel used for fishing operations with multipurpose gear. The research method uses survey methods through the measurement of the main dimensions of fishing vessels, interviews and literature studies. The data obtained were then analyzed by comparative descriptive to compare the value of the ratio of the main dimensions of the vessel between Length and Breadth (L/B), the ratio between Length and Depth (L/D) and the ratio between Breadth and Depth (B/D). The calculation results of the ratio of the main dimensions of the vessel are then compared with the standard ratio values in Indonesia. Fishing vessels with multipurpose gear in Indramayu have good vessel motion characteristics but have an impact on slow speed, strong elongation strength of the vessel, and stability and ability to drive a good vessel. The dimension ratio of multipurpose gear vessels generally meets the criteria of the ratio of the main dimensions of vessels based on the method of operation in Indonesia. It should be noted that the L / B ratio tends to exceed the minimum standard criteria for the Indonesian dimension ratio, this results in slow speeds and will interfere with the setting and hauling fishing gear on seine boat and mini trawl fishing gear
The Potential Effect of Using Fine Bubbles on the Growth Rate of Striped Catfish (Pangasianodon hypopthalmus) Fingerlings with Different Stocking Densities in Aquaponic Systems
Aquaponic is a combination of aquaculture and hydroponic systems. To increase fish production, aquaponic system can be used as an option because it can increase fish production with high density in limited land and water. The problem that often occurs in fish farming with high or intensive stocking densities is a decrease in dissolved oxygen concentration due to high oxygen consumption requirements. Handling that can be done to maintain the availability of dissolved oxygen concentration is by adding aeration by using Fine Bubbles (FBs). This research was conducted in October - December 2019 at the Green House Ciparanje Land Aquaculture Area, Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, UNPAD. The purpose of this research is to increase the growth of striped catfish with optimal density using the application of Fine Bubbles (FBs) and to improve the water quality of rearing media and plant productivity in aquaponic system. The research method used is an experimental method with randomized block design (RBD) consisting of four treatments and three repetitions. The treatment in this study is the spread of 375 striped catfish/150L, 450 striped catfish/150L, 525 striped catfish/150L and 600 striped catfish/150L. The parameters observed included specific growth rate (SGR), feed conversion ratio (FCR), fish survival (SR), water quality and plant growth. During the research, two harvests of water spinach were harvested in one cycle of fish rearing. The results show that the use of aquaponic systems and the addition of aerated FBs can increase the stocking density of striped catfish fingerlings to 600 striped catfish/150 L, with a high fish survival rate of 98% at a specific growth rate of 4.41 g and a feed conversion ratio of 1.00 g. The results of water quality observations for pH and DO parameters still meet the requirements but for temperature and ammonia, it has exceeded the safe threshold based on SNI (2000). The result of observation of water spinach plants, that the highest productivity in both harvests was in treatment C (525 striped catfish/ 150 L) up to 197.44 g, final plant height 44.54-47.10 cm and for the number of final leaves ranging from 9-10 leaves
Analysis of Factors Affecting Fish Consumption Export (Case Study: FQS FPQSC Cirebon)
The aim of this study is to analyze the factors that have a significant effect on the export volume of fish consumption (Case study: FQS FPQSC Cirebon). The method used in this FPQSC Cirebon. This research was the case study method. This study was conducted in September 2019 until March 2020 which took place in FQS FPQSC Cirebon, PT. Timur Jaya Cemerlang and PD. Sambu. The research method used is quantitative descriptive method by sampling techniques, namely census sampling and purposive sampling methods. The type of data used is secondary data and primary data utilizing by means of multiple linear regression analysis by the classical assumption test and statistical test. The results of this study found that the most significant factors affecting the fish consumption exports in Cirebon was the number of export destination countries with a significant value of 0.024 when seen from the α value of less than 0.05. If there are many export destination countries, the export volume will tend to increase and if export destination countries decline, the export volume will also decrease and It is necessary to add other variables to support research of 0.024 or less than the α requirement of 5% (0.05) countries
Comparative Assessment of Nutrient Composition of Aquacultured and Wild Catfish (Clarias gariepinus) in Cross Rivers State Nigeria
Aim: Aquafarming of catfish has become very popular in Nigeria recently, raising concerns about the nutritional benefits of this fish to consumers especially when compared to the wild catfish.
Study Design: Fishes were obtained from Calabar Cross Rivers State Nigeria. A total of 30 catfishes were harvested, 15 aquacultured and 15 wild. The fishes weighed between 150 – 200 g at the time of harvest.
Place and Duration of Study: The study was carried out at the central laboratory of the University of Calabar, Nigeria and lasted for a period of 6 months.
Methodology: Fishes were cleaned and dried under the sun for a period of 14 days. Dried fishes were eventually ground into fine powder which was used for the nutrient analysis. The proximate, mineral and vitamin contents of aquacultured and wild catfish were investigated. The results revealed that aquacultured catfish contained significantly higher amounts of protein than the wild catfish.
Conclusion: While the aquacultured fish may be preferable for children, young adults and pregnant women who require a lot of protein for body-building, growth and development, the wild catfish may be more suitable for the maintenance of general health, water and electrolyte balance and optimum productivity being richer in most minerals
Protein-Based Genetic Diversity Assessment of Tilapia guineensis and Sarotherodon melanotheron Populations from South-West Nigerian Coastal Waters
The present study was carried out to investigate the genetic differences in the Protein banding pattern of Tilapia guineensis and Sarotherodon melanotheron populations in Southwest Nigeria using Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate-Polyacrylamide Gel Electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). Four populations of Tilapia guineensis and three populations of Sarotherodon melanotheron from Ondo and Lagos states were considered for the study. The sarcoplasmic protein of the studied Cichlid species resolved on 12% SDS-PAGE revealed variations in their genetic diversity indices (number of alleles, shanon information index, heterozygosity and percentage polymorphism). T. guineensis had more proteins and higher genetic diversity as was revealed by the genetic diversity parameters and was found to be more polymorphic with a percentage polymorphism of 78.57% than S. melanotheron (57.14%). The two species had similarity coefficient of 0.82 indicating high genetic similarity between them. UPGMA (Unweighted Pair Group Method with Arithmetic Mean) dendrogram also revealed some level of genetic similarity between the studied populations and among the two species. Analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) confirmed the low genetic variation among the populations of the cichlid species and demonstrated that genetic variation was mostly within populations in both species. It is established from the study that Tilapia guineensis had higher genetic diversity than Sarotherodon melanotheron and the two species are closely related. Further study involving molecular markers is encouraged to complement this finding
Haematological Response of Clarias gariepinus (Burchell, 1822) Fingerlings Reared in Fish Cum-Duck Integrated System
This investigation was carried out to determine the haematological response of Clarias gariepinus fingerlings reared in a Fish cum-duck integrated system. One thousand and eighty pieces fingerlings with mean initial weight (MIW) and standard length (SL) (1.8 ± 0.22g, and 5.19 ± 0.44 cm) respectively were stocked for ten (10) weeks. The haematological investigation revealed that RBC and WBC increased significantly (P<0.05) within treatments. Other haematological variations were also observed in parameters such as PCV, MCV, MCH, MCHC and Hb with significant decrease (P< 0.05) in their mean values within treatments as compared to the control. Water quality parameters such as Dissolved oxygen ad Transparency shows evidential significant different (P< 0.05), while parameters such as Temperature, Total dissolved solid (TDS), Nitrate, Phosphate, Biological oxygen demand (BOD), Turbidity and pH shows no significant difference (P> 0.05). This studies shows in conclusion, that there were variations in the haematological and water quality parameters, but it was noticed that the values recorded could not to a greater extent hurt the fish because is still within the tolerable limits as confirmed by other research evidences. More so, the level of gains outweighs the level of damages caused as compared to the economic approach
Growth Performance and Nutrient Utilisation of (Clarias garienpinus) Fed with Formulated Diet Produced from a Modified Extruder and Durante Commercial Feed
A fabricated modified single screw fish feed extruder was used to extrude formulated floatable fish feeds from obtainable available feed ingredients. They were fed to 225 Clarias garienpinus (mean weight of 56 4.22 g) for 120 days in order to compare their nutritional values with that of a commercial feed. The fishes were first acclimatized for a period of 48 hours under laboratory condition. The weight of the fishes were taken every two weeks and recorded in comparison with the commercial feed (Durante) which served as the control. At the end of the feeding trials, the fishes were weighed, sacrificed and analysed for whole body composition, haematological status and proximate analysis. At the end of the feeding trial, Treatment 1 had the highest mean values of growth and nutrient utilization indices on Clarias garienpinus at standard deviations of 260.77 g (45.59%), 2.01%, 1.92 and 52.10% for the percentage of weight gained, specific growth rate, feed conversion ratio and feed conversion efficiency of the experimented fishes respectively when compared with the commercial feeds (Control) that had mean values of 416 g (71.36%), 2.18%, 1.20 and 83.33%. Treatment 4 had the lowest weight gained with mean values of 99.67 g (17.77%) 1.67%, 5.02 and 20.00% respectively. The white blood cell of the fishes in Treatment 1 had a high value of 6600 when compared to that of the Control which had a value of 7500. Treatment 1 (T1R1) experimented on Clarias garienpinus, gave the highest values of growth performance and nutrient utilization compared with other treatments in terms of its whole body composition, proximate analysis and haematolgical status. This implies that treatment 1 experimented on Clarias garienpinus, was the best and can be used for feeding fishes since their values are closer to that of the control. There was significant differences in the final weight of fish fed with treatment 1, 3 and 4 (p > 0.05). However, there was no significant difference in treatments 1 and 2
A Mini-review: Effect of Dunaliella salina on the Growth and Health of Fish
Fisheries is one of the sectors that can be developed to meet world food needs. The development of the fisheries is influenced by the availability of quality feeds. Dunaliella salina is a unicellular green algae that can be used as fish feeds. D. salina is known to contain many nutrients such as protein, carbohydrates, fats, pigments, and others. D. salina has also been shown to increase the growth rate of various types of fish. Not only for growth, but several studies have shown that D. salina has favorable effects on immunology. This article aims to explain the nutritional content and the effect of D. salina on the growth and health of fish. Based on the above studies, D. salina has the potential to be used as an alternative feed for various types of fish
Perifiton Community Structure in Citarik River
The purpose of this research is to determine the condition of waters in the Citarik River with the periphyton community as a bio indicator. This research was conducted from March-April 2019. The research method used was a survey method at 4 station points, five times sampling with a span of 7 days. The smallest periphyton abundance is in station IV which is 22 ind/cm2 and the most is in station I which is 18278 ind/cm2. Comparison of species deficit values at each station is different, this is influenced by different physical and chemical parameters. The dominance index value in the waters of the Citarik River ranges from 0.1 to 0.8 and the diversity index value ranges from 0.2 to 0.9. The results showed the Citarik River was in a mildly polluted condition
Water Quality Assessment of Shitalakhya River
Water quality is the key of environmental concern because of its important provision of water for drinking and domestic purpose, irrigation and aquatic life including fish and fisheries. The present study was conducted to assess the surface water quality of the Shitalakhya River from January, 2017 to December, 2018. Temperature, pH, EC, TDS, TSS, BOD5, Alkalinity, Total Hardness, Calcium Hardness, Magnesium Hardness, Chloride, Dissolved Silica, Total Iron concentration and Turbidity in water samples have been found in the ranges 24 - 33°C, 6.5 - 7.6, 108 - 478 µS/cm, 54 - 245 ppm, 8 - 118 mg/l, 6 - 12 mg/l, 36.6 - 231.8 mg/l, 30 - 190 mg/l, 20 - 120 mg/l, 10 - 80 mg/l, 3.54 - 9.91 mg/l, 16 - 51 mg/l, 0.10 - 1.5 mg/l, 2.09 - 120 NTU in the year 2017 and 21 - 32.5°C, 6.7 - 7.3, 101 - 424 µS/cm, 55 - 212 ppm, 10 - 154 mg/l, 7 - 16 mg/l, 42.7 - 219.6 mg/l, 35 - 180 mg/l, 25 - 115 mg/l, 10 - 70 mg/l, 4.96 - 16.99 mg/l, 19 - 84 mg/l, 0.10 - 2.50 mg/l, 2.73 - 214 NTU in the year 2018 respectively. Obtained results of the present study area shows that most of the parameters were within the permissible limit except Turbidity, Total Suspended Solid (TSS), Dissolved Silica (SiO2) and Biological Oxygen Demand for five days (BOD5). Use of river water can pose serious problems to human health and aquatic ecosystem via biological food chain. The present research suggests special preference for better management of the river water to protect the health of aquatic ecosystem of the river.
