    Welfare Level Analysis of Fish Skin Cracker Processors in Sugiharjo Village, Deli Serdang Regency, North Sumatra

    This study analyzes the welfare of fish skin crackers processors who live in Sugiharjo Village in the Deli Serdang district, North Sumatra Province. This study aim to analyze the level of household income and the welfare of the fish skin crackers processors who lives in Sugiharjo Village, Deli Serdang District Sumatra Utara Province. The method used in this research is a survey method with interviewing techniques. Then the types of data collected are primary data and secondary data. Furthermore, the respondent selection technique was carried out using the census method. The interviewed respondents were fish skin cracker processors who live in Sugiharjo Village and already have a family. The data were analyzed using quantitative descriptive method. Based on the research, it can be concluded that the income earned from the wages of fish skin cracker processing workers is IDR 30,000 - IDR 100,000 per day. Based on 10 indicators of household welfare level according to Statistics Indonesia [1], the household welfare of fish skin cracker processors in Sugiharjo Village has a score of 3.10. A total number of workers is 33. This result is retrieved after interviewing 33 respondents

    Effect of Partial Replacement of Fishmeal with Leucaena leucocephala Leaf Meal on the Growth Performance of Tilapia zilli Fingerlings

    Aims: A study was carried out to determine the effect of replacing fishmeal with Leucaena leucoephala leaf meal in the diet of Tilapia zilli fingerlings. Study Design: Three hundred (300) Tilapia zilli fingerlings (9.5±0.5 g/fish, mixed sex) fed with diet containing Leucaena leucoephala leaf meal for 10 weeks at 0%, 2.5%, 5.0%, 7.5% and 10.0% level of inclusion, representing the replacement of fish meal at 0%, 25% 75% and 100% respectively. Place and Duration of Study:  A study was carried out in the wet laboratory of Fisheries Technology department of Lagos State Polytechnic, Ikorodu between July 2017 and October 2017. Methodology: Tilapia sp. fingerlings were treated with five diets including a control experiment of which each treatment was replicated thrice, the total number of replicates was fifteen and the experiment was laid out in a completely randomized design. Results: Statistical analyses revealed that there was no significant difference (P=05) in weight gain, feed conversion ratio and protein efficiency ratio. Conclusion: L. leucocephala can be recommended in the diet of Tilapia zilli because of its economic in terms of cheapness and abundance especially in the tropical region and its nutritional values as a good source of plant protein

    Estimation of the Fecundity of Threatened Pethia ticto

    In order to estimate fecundity of threatened small indigenous fish species, tit punti (Pethia ticto), an investigation was done at the Field Laboratory Complex, Faculty of Fisheries, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during June to August, 2017. The mean total lengths were 5.39 ±0.58, 5.20 ± 0.43, 5.79 ± 0.97 cm and mean ovary weights were 0.45 ± 0.20, 0.38 ± 0.15, 0.53 ± 0.26 g for the month of June, July and August, respectively. The fecundity of P. ticto for the month of June was estimated to be 1120-13892 with a mean of 5319.62 ± 3169.16, for the month of July it was 1071-12325 with a mean of 5407.68 ± 3186.82 and for the month of August it was 2268-14328 with a mean of 5919.92 ± 3436.29. The gonadosomatic index (GSI) were 16.62 ± 3.35, 19.01± 4.55 and 14.75± 2.53 for the month of June, July and August, respectively. The highest GSI was observed in July (25.77) and the lowest was 10.53 in June. Information of fecundity and GSI of P. ticto will be helpful for artificial propagation, conservation, and management of this fish species

    The research was conducted for two weeks starting from 26 October 2020 to 9 November 2020 at Singgamanik local fish seed center, Karo regency, North Sumatra province. The Singgamanik Local Fish Seed Center is located in a wet area with a tropical climate. Therefore, this study aims to determine the technicalities of tilapia hatchery at the Singgamanik Local Fish Seed Center (LFSC). The Singgamanik Local Fish Seed Center (LFSC) has water sources that come from river water, rainwater, and ground water. The area of the Singgamanik Fish Seed Center is 1.5 hectares, consisting of 48 pond plots and one Singgamanik Fish Seed Center office building, 1 hall building, and 1 mesh building. Primary data collection techniques were carried out by observation, interviews and active participation, while secondary data were obtained from the literature. The Singgamanik Local Fish Seed Center (BBI) was established in 1980 in Singgamanik Village, Munte District, Karo Regency, North Sumatra. Tilapia in Indonesia is an economically important fish in the world because of its easy cultivation method, good taste, relatively affordable prices, and a wide tolerance to the environment

    Pattern of Fish Consumption and Fish Distribution: A Study on Sunyani Municipality, Ghana

    Fish consumption and marketing has become an essential phenomenon due to the increasing appreciation of the health and the economic benefits of fish to households in Ghana. Given this, the study sought to identify the pattern of fish consumption and distribution channels using semi-structured interview guides, administered to fifty (50) consumers and fifty (50) fish traders. Data obtained were analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). Scomber japonicus, Sardinella aurita, Trachurus trachurus and Clarias gariepinus were the most preferred consumed fish. The majority of consumers preferred smoked fish to other fish products based on taste, flavor, shelf life, and wholesomeness in diets. Based on the findings from the binary logistic model, educated respondents as well as respondents below 20 years could be more prone to calcium deficient diseases, particularly in the absence of supplementary sources of calcium in their diets. Fish traders purchased their fish products from Sunyani, Yeji, Techiman, Cape Cost, and Buipe. The study showed that simple and complex marketing and distributing channels for frozen and smoked fish products, respectively. The main challenge encountered by fish traders and consumers was fish spoilage. Fish traders should be schooled on proper fish handling techniques to reduce the rate of fish spoilage. Sensitization programs regarding the consumption of fish products entirely must be promoted among consumers

    Characterization of Beach Seine Operations in Pangandaran Beach, Indonesia

    The coastal area in Pangandaran Regency, in general, has been developed as an area for tourism conservation and fisheries activities. Pangandaran beach which facing the oceans has potential in the fisheries sector which is quite potential so that Pangandaran regency is one of the regions in Indonesia that has potential in capture fisheries. There are various types of fishing gear used in fishing activities in Pangandaran, one of them is beach seine. Beach seine is local wisdom that is still maintained in Pangandaran so that this fishing gear is still operated. The purpose of this research is to investigate the operation of beach seine in Pangandaran water. The research was carried out in August 2018 on the East Coast of Pangandaran. The method used in this research is a survey method and analyzed descriptively. The beach seine operation phase is divided into three stages, preparation, stocking nets, and catching catches. The main catches of beach seine in Pangandaran consist of hairtail fish (Trichiurus spp) with an average of 172 fish and white pomfret (Pampus argentus) with an average of 99 fish. The bycatch is 7 species of fish with a total average of 1990 fish. The beach seine in Pangandaran has an average catch rate of 31.05 km/hour

    Toxicity of Crude Fruit Endocarp Extract of Calabash (Lagenaria siceraria) on African Catfish (Clarias gariepinus) Juveniles

    Background: Illicit disposal of scraped out endocarp of bottle gourds as part of processing activity for domestic use into the aquatic environment pose a big threat to the aquatic ecosystem. This study investigated the toxicity effects of crude fruit endocarp extracts of L. siceraria on C. gariepinus juveniles. Methodology: 120 mixed sex of C. gariepinus juveniles of mean weight and length (19.59 ±0.42 g; 14.6 ±0.80 cm) respectively were investigated. The fish were divided into 6 groups of 10 fish in each aquarium containing 5, 20, 35, 50 and 65 mg/L concentration of aqueous extract of L. siceraria and 0.00 mg/L (control) respectively with replicates for Four (4) days for acute toxicity analysis. The animals were sacrificed and blood samples collected for biochemical and isolation of the gills and liver for histopathological studies. Results: Experimental media pH, free carbon (iv) oxide, total alkalinity contents increased while dissolved oxygen decreased significantly (P<0.05) with increase in concentration in the acute bioassay. Temperature did not differ significantly (P>0.05) in all the groups thus, did not affect fish survival. Furthermore, AST, ALT and LDH profiles in blood serum of fish exposed to acute concentrations exhibited a significant increase (P<0.05) with increase in concentration. The exposed gills revealed progressive striking histological alterations viz. thickening and shortening of secondary lamellae, degeneration of connective tissue and complete loss of secondary lamella while the liver showed progressive histo-architectural distortions such as hepatic hypertrophy, cellular degeneration (necrosis), haemorrhage and intracellular infiltration with increase in concentration of the L. siceraria extract. Conclusion: Aqueous extract of L. siceraria had adverse effect on juveniles of C. gariepinus, as evident in the negative modification of the body physiology via biochemical and histological investigations, thus toxic to the aquatic life. Further investigations on other vital organs - kidney, heart, GIT and the reproductive organs are recommended

    Eco-Morphological Patterns and Diversity of Some Fishes from the Ogu River in Rivers State, Niger Delta, Nigeria

    Aim: Eco-morphological studies show that morphological traits are adaptive, which means that traits evolve and change as a result of the activities going on in the environment such as predation, competition, and other biotic associations. This study was taken to determine the eco-morphological patterns of some fishes from the Ogu River in Ogu/Bolo Local Government Area of Rivers State, Niger Delta, Nigeria. Study Design: Field work and random sampling. Place and Duration: Three stations were sampled along the Ogu river and the duration of the study was four months (January- April 2018). Methodology: A total of 193 individual fishes were caught, comprising of 5 families and 11 species. Fish samples were obtained with the aid of a seine net; identified, weighed and morphometric measurements were made, to provide the eco-morphological attributes. Fishes were dissected to measure intestinal length. Statistical analysis includes Principal Component Analysis (PCA) of morphometric ratios and intestinal length - total length ratios of fish. Results: The fish species found were Tilapia guineensis, Tilapia zilli, Mugil bananensis, Mugil curema, Liza falcipinnis, Liza dumerili, Liza grandisquamis, Pomadasys rogerii, Pomadasys jubelini, Lutjanus endecacanthus and Eucinostomus melanopterus. Tilapia guineensis was the most abundant species, Shannon Weiner diversity index (H) ranged from 1.83 - 1.96, Simpson’s dominance index ranged from 0.79 - 0.85. The PCA analysis using different morphological attributes revealed 4 groups in feeding regime (omnivorous - Mugilids; herbivorous - Cichlids; larger carnivores - Lutjanids and smaller carnivores - Pomadasyids), and 3 groups in the fishes habitat preference in water as (1: Cichlids, 2: Mugilids and 3: Pomadasyids, Lutjanids and Gerreids). Conclusion: This study revealed morphometric attributes of some fishes of the Ogu river in Rivers State Nigeria and their relation with feeding, microhabitat and environmental parameters

    Macrozoobenthos Spatial Distribution as the Indicator of Cikeruh River Pollution in Sumedang Regency, West Java

    Cikeruh River is one of the tributaries of the Citarum River which has received a variety of inputs, which can affect the river water quality and cause pollution. Macrozoobenthos is an organism that can determine the pollution of waters. This research aims to determine the spatial distribution of macrozoobenthos communities in the Cikeruh River as the indicator of pollution. This research was conducted in July 2019 - August 2019 using the field survey method. The data collection technique used is purposive sampling, setting 5 stations based on environmental factors and land use around the river flow. The parameters observed were the physical-chemical parameters of the waters, physical-chemical parameters of the substrate and macrozoobenthos as biological parameters as indicators of pollution, as well as calculating the abundance of macrozoobenthos, diversity index, uniformity index, species deficit and morisita index. The results of the macrozoobenthos spatial distribution along the Cikeruh River flow differed at each location of observation. At station 1 found several intolerant species Heptagenia sp., Tipula sp., Leptophelbia sp., Polycentrophus sp. and Enallagma sp., station 2 found several facultative species Melanoides tuberculata, Lymnaea sp., Tarebia granifera, Sulcospira testudinaria, and Corbicula fluminea,, station 3 found several facultative species Melanoides tuberculata, Lymnaea sp., Tarebia granifera, Sulcospira testudinaria, Pomacea canalicuta and Corbicula fluminea, station 4 found several facultative species Melanoides tuberculata, Tarebia granifera, Sulcospira testudinaria and Corbicula fluminea, and station 5 found intolerant species Chironomus sp., Tubifex sp., and Lumbriculus sp. The abundance of macrozoobenthos is around 590 ind/m2 - 7420 ind/m2. Diversity index ranges from 0.46-1.85. The uniformity index ranges from 0.16 to 0.64. Species deficits at each station are different. Cikeruh River morisita index ranging from 0.14 to 0.80 which is in the uniform category

    Tomini Gulf coast inhabited by various ethnic groups in Indonesia, one of Gorontalo. The coastal area Gorontalo Tomini Bay stretches from the border Bone Bolango - Mongondow Bolaang South (North Sulawesi) to Pouhuwato - Parigi Moutong (Central Sulawesi). The purpose of this research for the inventory of local knowledge Gorontalo related to astronomy and movement of pelagic fish in the Gulf of Tomini. Based on this research, there is local wisdom that still retained fishermen off the coast of Gorontalo, Tomini, like the seasons, currents and astronomy (astrology). Fishermen off the coast of Gorontalo, Tomini, referring to the constellation as a direction and a benchmark in the utilization of fishery resources. Collecting data in this study done by observation and interviews with several respondents fishermen. Respondents were determined by purposive sampling (intentionally).
