Chemical and Organoleptic Characteristics of Seaweed Jelly Candy (Eucheuma cottonii) with the Addition of Red Ginger (Zingiber officinale Roscoe) Extract
Eucheuma cottonii is one of seaweed species that has beneficial economic value and widely cultivated in Indonesia. Diversifying product into seaweed jelly candy could be carried out to utilize the source. The seaweed distinctive aroma is one of problem in producing jelly candy. Ingredient with strong aroma such as red ginger is needed to covered the smell. This research was aimed to determine the optimum concentration of red ginger (Zingiber officinale Roscoe) extract and seaweed (Eucheuma cottonii) to produce high quality jelly candy based on chemical and organoleptic characteristics. This research used an experimental method consisting of 4 different concentration of red ginger extract (0%, 40%, 50% and 60%) with 20 panelists as evaluators. Chemical composition (water content, protein content, fat content, carbohydrate content, crude fiber content) and organoleptic characteristics (appearance, aroma, texture, taste) of jelly candy were observed as parameters in this research. The results showed that the addition of 50% red ginger extract to jelly candy produced the best organoleptic characteristics and most preferred by panelists. The chemical analysis showed the jelly candy contained 6,22% water, 0,88% protein, 0,19% fat, 96,82% carbohydrate, and 1,54% crude fiber. Addition 50% of red ginger extract is recommended to produce seaweed jelly candy that has the best and most preferred characteristics
Fish Bone Gelatin
The purpose of this review article is to examine the method of making gelatin, the characteristics of gelatin from the results of research that has been carried out in Indonesia and the benefits of fish gelatin. Based on a review of various articles and other literature, it can be concluded that fish bone gelatin can be extracted by the acid method. The production of fishbone gelatin consists of 4 stages, the preparation of raw materials includes removal of non-collagen components from raw materials, conversion of collagen to gelatin, purification of gelatin by filtering and finally drying and powdering. Fishbone gelatin can be applied to both the food and non-food industries
Utilization of Water Hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) as Fish Feed Ingredient
A freshwater plant, water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) is commonly found in public waters in Indonesia. Water hyacinth often experiences blooming which causes negative impacts such as lowering oxygen levels, reducing the number of fish, increasing evapotranspiration, disrupting transportation, becoming habitat for disease vectors, and others. However, water hyacinth can be used as an alternative raw material because it still contains nutrients such as carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, and minerals. Water hyacinth also has potential as an antibacterial agent because it contains secondary metabolites (alkaloids, saponins, steroid compounds, flavonoids, phenolic compounds, glycosides, and cardiac glycosides). The utilization of water hyacinth as fish feed ingredient has been shown to give positive effect on the growth of African catfish (Clarias gariepinus), grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella), goldfish (Cyprinus carpio), and Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) seeds. The use of water hyacinth as an alternative fish feed ingredient can be a solution to reduce production costs and reduce the impact of water hyacinth blooms
The effect of Red Paprika Extract (Capsicum Annuum) in Feed on the Color Intensity Level of Comet Fish (Carassius auratus)
This study aims to analyze the effect of red paprika flour in fish feed to increase the color intensity of the Comet fish juvenile. The research method used a Complete Randomized Design experiment consist of four treatments and three replicates. The treatments consisted of various levels of addition red pepper extract, namely treatment A (0%), B (3%), C (5%) and D (7%). The investigation includes color intensity of the fish. Survival rate and water quality parameters data were also taken. The color observation data were analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis analysis, if there was a significant difference, the Z test was performed. The results of this study indicated that the addition of 5% red paprika extract to the feed was the best treatment with an increase in the color intensity level of comet fish at 4.71. While the comet fish Survival Rate (SR) data in all treatments were observed to be 100% and the water quality during the maintenance period was in the optimal range and met the standards. The average temperature value was 24.7-26.4ºC, DO 5.6-5.8 mg/L and pH 6.67-7.53
Age, Growth, Condition Factor and Reproduction of Planiliza abu (Mugiliformes: Mugilidae) in the Al-Diwaniya River, Middle of Iraq
The age, growth, relative condition factor, and reproduction of Planiliza abu (Heckel, 1843) from the Al-Diwaniya River, Iraq was described in samples obtained from October 2016 to September 2017, using different fishing gears. Total length and weight were measured, scales were used for age determination, and gonads were excised from the body cavity sexed and weighed. The lengths of the species ranged from 7.0 to 20.0 cm, and the most dominant length group was 13.0 cm. The length-weight relationship was W=0.0199*L2.821 revealing a negative allometric growth (b= 2.821). The mean relative condition factor (Kn) was calculated as 1.13 for females and 0.93 for males. Four ages were recognized for the species with mean total lengths of 10.2, 14.5, 39.0, 17.2 and 19.3 cm, respectively. The von Bertalanffy growth parameters based on back-calculated lengths were L∞= 23.4 cm, K=0.38 and to= -0.27. The growth performance index (Ø) of the species is computed as 2.32. The overall sex ratio (male: female) was 1:1.70. The gonad-somatic index (GSI) values of both sexes were highest in April, 8.5 for males and 11.6 for females and the lowest values in August, 0.22 for males and 0.75 for females, indicated that the spawning period was from April to May. Some biological properties such as lengths of individuals, negative allometric growth, ages from 1 to 4 years, values of ultimate growth (L∞) and growth performance index (Ø) and overall sex ratio were among those described for the species in other waters. These results can contribute to providing information for species management in the study river
Assessment of the Status of the Fishery of Indwagyi Lake, Myanmar Using Traditional Ecological Knowledge
Aims: Indawgyi Lake, in northern Myanmar, is the country’s largest lake and among the largest in Southeast Asia. Although the lake’s fishery provides an important source of food and livelihoods, relatively little is known about the status of its fishery and how human actions are affecting it. Further, some basic information on fish populations has not been documented, such as the extent to which fish migrate, either downstream toward the Ayeyarwady River or into the lake’s tributaries. Similar to other lakes in the region (e.g., Inle Lake in central Myanmar), the fishing practices of Indawgyi Lake appear to be intensifying. Thus, improved understanding of the lake’s fishery and fish-migration patterns can inform future management.
Study Design: To gather preliminary information, we surveyed 6 villages around Indawgyi Lake collecting Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) about the migratory behavior of fish and current state of the fishery.
Place and Duration of Study: Hepa, Hepu, Lone Ton, Lonsant, Mamon Kaing, and Nyaung Bin along Indawgyi Lake in Myanmar
Methodology: We interviewed in large groups at 6 villages (approximately 60 fishermen overall), aggregating results into the six village groups due to the consensus style of interviews. We performed subsequent analyses using Google Earth Engine.
Results: Fishermen reported that nearly all the fish they commonly catch are migratory, with most using upstream tributaries for spawning during the wet season. Fishermen also reported that, although most tributaries remained in good condition, several have been severely impacted by land-use changes, including gold mining. Fishermen consistently reported that harvest levels have declined dramatically in the past two decades even as they deploy more nets. Across the villages interviewed, the top recommendation to combat declines was to increase/strengthen enforcement of regulations.
Conclusion: This research demonstrates the utility of TEK to provide preliminary information on poorly studied systems that can inform conservation and management
Application of IoT-based Technology in Vaname Shrimp Cultivation: A Systematic Literature
Vaname shrimp is one type of shrimp that the people of Indonesia widely cultivate. However, there are several problems in the failure of vaname shrimp production, including poor water quality during the maintenance period, especially in ponds. Based on the selection of inclusion and exclusion criteria and quality assessment, it was found that the use of technology in cultivation activities will help streamline time, energy, and human resources so that decision-making can be made faster. The technology used is limited to water quality monitoring, disease monitoring, and EMS. The methods used to create IoT-based technology are hardware devices, software tools, function tests, and user tests. The smaller the error value, the more accurate the data obtained
Effect of Dietary Persea americana on the Organosomatic Indices, Diseases Resistance and Liver Histopathlology of Clarias gariepinus Expose to Klebsiella pneumoniae
The experiment was carried out to evaluate the prophylactic efficiency of dietary powdered Persea americana leaves on the organosomatic indices, disease resistance, and liver histopathology of Clarias gariepinus exposed to Klebsiella pneumoniae. Five (5) different isonitrogenous diets with varying percentages of P. americana powered leaves inclusion were formulated as follows: Do(0%); D1(3%); D3 (6%); D3 (9%) and D4 (12%). One hundred and fifty (150) C. gariepinus were distributed in five groups in triplicates of ten (10), and fed diets Do-D4 accordingly. After eight (8) weeks of feeding, they were injected intraperitoneally with klebsiella pneumoniae at days 1, 7, 14 and 21. After twenty eight (28) days post-infection period, three fish from each of the triplicate were sacrificed for evaluation of the Hepatosomatic index (HSI); Cistosomatic index (CSI), and Spleenosomatic index (SSI), and the liver was taken to the laboratory for histopathological analysis. The survival rate was calculated in each of the groups and the disease resistance was determined. At the end of the experiment, serious ulcerations were observed on the fish fed Do and infected with K. pneumonia, while the fish fed D1 – D4 were ulcer- free. The result reveals that the SSI and CSI were similar in all the groups (Do-D4), but the HSI was higher (P>0.05) in the group fed Do (control) compared to the group fed D1-D4. The survival rate and the diseases were Lower (<0.5) in the group Do compared to the group fed D1-D4, though it was not dose dependant. The result of the histopathology shows that the liver of the fish fed Do has bloodstain in the portal vein and sinusoid, while the liver of the fish fed D1-D4 have no bloodstain. The experiment reveals that Persea americana powdered leaves as applied is an anti-liver inflammatory herb, disease resistant and anti-bacterial
Determination of Some Heavy Metals in Cultured Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) in Western Kordofan State, Sudan
The current study was conducted in two different localities have been selected in Western Kordofan State (Elsonout and Abu-zabad Localities) to evaluate some heavy metals concentrations (Copper, Cadmium, Zinc, and Lead) in three parts (liver, gills and muscles) of Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) cultured in Dams, also to evaluate the same heavy metals concentrations in Dams water where Nile Tilapia is cultured. The evaluation was included the correlation of heavy metals accumulation between fish organs and water samples were compared. Finally, the results were compared with recommended levels by FAO, WHO and other international organizations. A total of 54 samples has been taken from marketable size Nile Tilapia parts (gills; livers and muscles) and subjected to analysis of heavy metals accumulations. Also, a total of 18 water samples were taken from Dams (shallow, middle and deep water). The data was subjected to SPSS using ANOVA. The findings of this work were revealed that, there were a highly significant differences (P≤0.01) in all heavy metals among gills, liver and muscles of Nile Tilapia cultured in Dams. And there was a highly significant difference (P≤0.01) in all heavy metals among gills, liver and muscles of Nile Tilapia according to localities. Anyway, when compared fish organs; we found that, gills were recorded the maximum figures in all heavy metals followed by livers and the minimum figures were recorded by muscles. The results of this study were in the permissible levels recommended by international organizations
E-Commerce Based Marketing Strategy of Seaweed Processed Products of Aulia Sari Bandung, West Java
This study aims to analyze the efficiency and marketing strategy of e-commerce seaweed processed products at Aulia Sari Bandung. The research was conducted with a survey method with a snowball sampling technique to 45 respondents consisting of producers and consumers of the products. The survey results were analyzed descriptively qualitatively. The research was conducted at Aulia Sari Bandung on Jl. Inspeksi Pengairan No. 3 Cipamokolan Bandung City, West Java from July to November 2020. The data sources used are primary and secondary data. Primary data obtained by interviewing informants. Secondary data were obtained from regular consumers or second informants and literature studies related to this research. Data analysis was performed using analysis of SWOT (Strength, Weakness, Opportunity, Threat) and QSPM (Quantitative Strategic Planning Matrix). The results showed that the coordinates of Aulia Sari Bandung are at position X, Y = 0.37; 0.10, which means that it is in quadrant I position by supporting aggressive strategies which means having opportunities and strengths than can be utilized maximally. Some alternative strategies that can be done are maintaining the quality of production, improving and facilitating services using Whatsapp and Go-Food, increasing promotion and sales via Instagram and Facebook, maintaining marketing from Whatsapp and Go-Food to obtain maximum benefits, and improving product promotion and marketing through online marketing media to make it look attractive
