    A Mini-Review: Marine Debris in Indonesian Waters

    Indonesia is a country that has very wide sea waters and has abundant resources. The quality of the waters must be maintained, especially from marine debris (MD) contaminants. This article aims to explain the classification, movement, and impact of marine debris on the aquatic environment. From various studies, it was found that MD in Indonesian waters is grouped into macro and micro sizes. The movement of MD in waters is influenced by tides, currents, and wind speed. MD greatly impacts the ecosystem in aquatic habitats especially mangroves. The purpose of this article is to review of marine debris in Indonesian waters

    Analysis of Income Disparity of Coastal and Non-Coastal Communities in Banten Province, Indonesia

    This study aims to analyze the large income disparity in coastal and non-coastal areas in Banten Province and to analyze whether the fisheries sub-sector has become the economic base in Banten Province in 2015 – 2019. January until May 2021. The method is carried out by survey method then analyzed quantitatively and presented descriptively. The data of this study were sourced from secondary data and primary data. Data were obtained from BPS Banten Province, BPS West Java Province, Marine and Fisheries Service Banten Province, Marine and Fisheries Service West Java Province and through questionnaires from coastal and non-coastal communities. Data analysis includes analysis of Williamson index, Gini coefficient and Location Quotient (LQ). based on the results of research conducted, it can be concluded that the income disparity in the coastal areas of Banten Province is greater than in the non-coastal areas. The Gini ratio analysis shows that the value of the Gini ratio has decreased from year to year, which means that income distribution is more evenly distributed until in 2019 it reaches 0. The fisheries sector in Banten Province is included in the non-base sector because it has a value of 0.5671. Production of catch commodities that get superior commodities: small pelagic fish group (mean LQ=1.81) and demersal fish group (mean LQ=0.84).     Analysis of Capture Fisheries Development Trends in Indonesia

    Indonesia\u27s fishing capture industry has very great potential in order to become the national economy\u27s key driver. Change in population, pricing, technology, and productivity are the key indicators of trend. The objective of this study is to assess the evolution of Indonesian fisheries. This study was carried out at the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries from August 2020 to July 2021. According to this study, 34 provinces in Indonesia were surveyed using a literature review method. Primary data in the form of expert opinion (expert judgment) consisting of 10 capable respondents. Secondary data was adopted from statistical data of the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries Center from 2005-2018. Data analysis was performed by using descriptive quantitative analysis techniques. The development of capture fisheries competitiveness in Indonesia has experienced fluctuating changes and tends to increase during 2006 to 2018

    Assessment of Cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum) Bark Extract on Proximate Composition and Sensory Qualities of Smoked-Dried African Catfish Clarias gariepinus (Burchell, 1822)

    The study determined the effect of Cinnamon (Cinnamonum verum) bark extract solution on proximate composition and sensory evaluation of smoke-dried catfish stored at ambient temperature (37+2oC) for 28 days. The experimental treatments are the control, 0.5%, 1% and 1.5 %( w/v) cinnamon bark extract solutions. Thirty-nine fish of average mean weight of 24.87+1.25g were gutted, washed and randomly assigned to the treatments. Thereafter, the fish were soaked into the treatments for 30minutes and later hot smoked for 12hours. After smoking, the fish were stored in boxes and placed on laboratory table for one month. The catfish Clarias gariepinus treated with 1% solution of Cinnamon bark extract had the highest moisture content with mean value 13.65+0.82%, followed by 6.93+1.66% recorded in fish sample treated with 1.5% solution of the extract, lowest percentage crude protein content 38.15+0.82% was observed in fish treated with 1% concentrate of the extract and percentage carbohydrate content indicate that the control have the lowest carbohydrate content with mean value 1.92+0.01% which is significantly different (p<0.05) from other treated sample while sample treated with 1.5% solution of the Cinnamon bark extract have the highest percentage carbohydrate with mean value 15.73+1.64%.Sensory evaluation was also assessed using 7-point hedonic scale and reveals that the smoked catfish retained very good score for appearance, colour, flavour, texture and general acceptance after 28days of storage and the overall acceptability mean score in fish treated with 5g and 15g cinnamon bark extract solution indicate the product is being generally accepted (2.87+0.59%) and (2.34+0.56%) respectively. Cinnamon (Cinnamonum verum) bark extract solution could be used to protect stored smoke-dried catfish from loss of nutritional value and general acceptability thus limiting economic loss and possible health risk to consumers

    Macrozoobenthos Community Structure in Mangrove Forest Ecotourism Area Karangsong Indramayu Regency, West Java

    This research aims to analyze the diversity of macrozoobenthos species and density in mangrove ecotourism waters Karangsong Indramayu Regency West Java. The research was conducted in West Java starting from January 2021 to March 2021. This research method uses primary data in the form of physical and chemical data to measure the density, diversity and uniformity of macrozoobenthos. Data retrieval technique uses Purposive Sampling in the determination of 3 stations and 4 repetitions. The results of the research found 15 species of Makrozoobenthos that live in mangrove ecosystems namely Telescopium telescopium, Balanus perforates, Clypeomorus zonata, Cassidula aurisfelis, Cypraea leucogaster, Gyrineum natator, Polinices powisianus, Perna viridis, Placuna placenta, Tellina sp, Gari sp, Meretrix meretrix, Dossinia sp, Saccostrea cucullate and Anadara transversa. The density of macrozoobenthos ranges from 294 – 548 ind/m2. The diversity index of macrozoobenthos at stations 2 and 3 is in the medium category with a value of 2.44 and 2.822 and the diversity at station 1 is in the high category with a value of 3.10. Uniformity values range from 0.84 – 0.891 with a high category. The relationship of Water Quality with Makrozoobentos has an R2 value of 90% water quality can affect the life of macrozoobenthos and as much as 10% is influenced by other factors

    Optimization of Hormone for Artificial Breeding and Seed Production of Clarias batrachus (Linnaeus, 1758) Under Captive Condition

    Aims: The study aimed to develop brood stock of Magur (Clarias batrachus), artificial breeding and seed production under captive condition using growth hormones in north-eastern Bangladesh. Study Design: Fifteen pairs of brood Clarias batrachus were used in this experiment. Brood fishes were reared up to maturation for spawning operation in the farm by providing artificial diet for 4-5 months before onset of breeding season. In the present experiment, the brood fishes were induced with three growth hormones viz., Ovupin (100 mg dompridone and 0.2 mg S-GnRHa) at the rate of 1 ml.kg-1 body weight, Flash (20 mg S-GnRHa, 10 mg dompridone IP and propylene glycol) at the rate of 1 ml.kg-1 body weight and Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG) hormone at the rate of 2272 IU.kg-1 body weight; respectively. The broods were injected with single injection in all treatments. Place and Duration of Study: The present study was conducted on induced spawning of Magur (Clarias batrachus) at the Reliance Aqua Farm, Boilor, Trisal of Mymensingh district from March to August, 2016. Methodology: Sexually mature healthy, uninjured male and female fishes were collected from the broodstock ponds for induced breeding. The fishes were transferred in the clean and germ free conditioning tanks for about 6-7 hours. During conditioning, continuous splash of water was given by keeping the male and female separate. The fishes were then weighed individually and injected intramuscularly with Ovupin, Flash and HCG hormone respectively. Only females were injected at 45° angle of the caudal peduncle. About 23-24 hours of post-injection the testes from males were dissected and mixed with stripping eggs for fertilization. Results: The incubation period for fertilized eggs were 23-24 hours for all the treatments. Fertilization rates were 78.20±0.52, 93.09±0.61 and 81.60±0.97 % and hatching rates were 54.93±0.61, 75.77±0.47 and 64.41±0.71 % in Ovupin, Flash and HCG treatments, respectively. Conclusion: This study revealed higher fertilization (93.09 %) and hatching (75.77 %) rate was achieved with Flash hormone. Therefore, Flash hormone could be effective for the artificial breeding and seed production of Magur (Clarias batrachus)

    Influence of Stocking Density on Growth Performance of Labeo bata in Cage at River Padma, Rajshahi, Bangladesh

    As a result of climate change, aquaculturists are seeking adaptive culture techniques for sustainable aquaculture. In this case, cage culture is a suitable technique that can mitigate the challenge of climate change, but due to the lack of knowledge of proper stocking density, often productions are not satisfactory. Therefore, the experiment was conducted to evaluate the influence of stocking density on growth and production of an endangered minor carp bata (Labeo bata) in cages for a period of 120 days in Padma River, Rajshahi, Bangladesh. On an average initial weight of bata fingerling of 5 g was stoked in cages under three treatments each with containing three replications using three different stocking densities (106, 71 and 35 fingerling/m3 for T1, T2 and T3, respectively). Supplementary feed (3% per body weight) was given to the cultured species twice in a day. The mean values of water temperature, transparency, pH and dissolved oxygen were in suitable range throughout the experimental period. Significantly (p<0.05) highest mean gross weight (85.82±0.70 g), specific growth rate (2.37± 0.02%), survival rate (83± 3.00%) and food conversion ratio (2.27± 0.03) was found in T3 rather than T2 and T1. The net production in terms of biomass (18.23±2.43 kg/cage) was significantly (p<0.05) higher in T2.The study suggests that, treatment T2 (71 fingerling /m3) as the optimum stocking density to produce maximum production by cage culture of Labeo bata

    Sustainable Semi-Intensive Aquaculture of Climbing Perch (Anabas testudineus) in Mymensingh Region, Bangladesh: A Comparative Study

    This study examines the growth and yield of Vietnamese koi with Thai koi for developing a suitable culture management technique of koi for sustainable production and unveiling the most cost effective culture of koi species. The study was conducted for a rearing period of 100 days in four farms at Gauripur upazila in Mymensingh district in Bangladesh. The treatment 1 (T1), treatment 2  (T2) are considered for Vietnamese koi and treatment 3 (T3), treatment 4 (T4) are considered for Thai koi with stocking density 1,72,900 per hectare for T1 and T3 and 2,47,000 for T2 and T4 at four different farms of study area. The ponds were stocked with an initial length of 0.75±0.01 cm and weight of 0.20 g in all the treatments. The culture period has the optimum level of physicochemical parameters. The study reveals that the maximum weight gain was in treatment T1 of Vietnamese koi and lowest in treatment T4 of Thai koi. Similarly, physical length, weight and survival of Anabas testudineus also followed the same trends as weight gain. Individually treatment T1 shows significantly higher specific growth rate than the other treatments. Besides, food conversion ratio was significantly higher in treatment T1 followed by treatment T2, T3 and T4. However, the mean fish production were 17092, 15000, 10746 and 10469 kg/ha in treatment T1, T2, T3 and T4 respectively. Consistently, highest growth, survival and higher net economic benefit from A. testudineus were found in treatment T1 among the four treatments. Vietnamese koi population of treatment T1 has appeared to be most suitable for good quality aquaculture practice for 100 days rearing semi-intensive system among the four treatments. Therefore, monoculture practice of Vietnamese koi is a perfect scheme of choice for a commercially viable and sustainable koi culture to meet up the protein deficit and as well as to accelerate the sustainable development of Bangladesh

    Evaluation of Proximate, Fatty Acids, Amino Acids and Total Cholesterol Contents of Selected Decapod Crustaceans from Badagry Creek, Lagos, Nigeria

    Three decapod crustaceans (Penaeus notalis, Procambarus clarkii and Callinectes pallidus) were selected in this study due to their low cost and wide distribution across tropical and temperate regions of the world. The proximate, fatty acids, amino acids and total cholesterol contents of Penaeus notalis, Procambarus clarkii and Callinectes pallidus from Badagry Creek, Lagos, Nigeria were evaluated for their nutritional importance in diet and to human health especially as the demand for these resources is increasing worldwide due to increase in human population, low cost and nutritional benefits. The proximate composition of the selected crustaceans was determined using standard methods of analysis, the cholesterol content was determined using enzymatic kit method, the fatty acid composition was analysed using Gas Chromatography- Mass Spectrophotometer and the amino acid composition was analysed using Amino Acid Analyzer. The proximate composition (moisture, crude fat, crude fibre, crude protein, ash and carbohydrate contents) analysed showed significant difference (p<0.05) among the three selected crustaceans studied, so also the cholesterol content. All the fatty acids in the results obtained except (Palmitic acid (C16:0), magaric acid (C17:0), myristoleic acid (C14:1), (C18:1n-9t), (C22:1n-9), cetoleic acid (C22:1n11c), C18:2n-6t, rumenic acid (C18:2n-7), γ-Linolenic acid (GLA) (C18:3n-6), eicosatrienoic acid (ETE) (C20:3n-3), docosadienoic acid (C22:2n-6) and docosapentaenoic acid (DPA) (C22:5n-3)) showed significant difference (p<0.05). All the essential amino acids indicated significant difference (p<0.05). Moreover, all the non-essential amino acids except cystine were also significantly difference (p<0.05) among the three selected crustaceans. This study revealed that all the selected decapod crustaceans studied are good source of high quality protein, essential amino acids, low cholesterol levels, omega 3 and 6 polyunsaturated fatty acids thereby making them of high nutritional benefits to consumers

    The Contribution of Fisheries Sector in Regional Development of Cirebon Regency of West Java Province, Indonesia

    This research aims to analyze the contribution of the fisheries sector to Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP), analyze the extent to which market demand is related to fishery sector products, and analyze the strength of the fisheries sector base and non-base sectors in regional development in Cirebon Regency. The method used in this research is quantitative method using secondary time series data, which is then analyzed using descriptive statistics, as well as qualitative methods using primary data obtained through direct interviews with parties involved in the fisheries sector and distributing questionnaires via google form. to the people of Cirebon Regency. The data analysis used is growth index analysis, Shift Share (SS) analysis, Trade Area Capture (TAC) analysis, Pull Factor (PF) analysis, and Location Quotient (LQ) analysis. The results of the growth index analysis show that the GRDP of the fisheries sector in Cirebon Regency has increased by 77.22% in the 2013-2019 periods. The results of the Shift Share (SS) analysis show that the contribution of the fisheries sector to the GRDP of Cirebon Regency is 10.02%. The results of the 2013-2019 TAC analysis show that the value of TAC > total population means that Cirebon Regency can capture trade opportunities in fishery products from other regions. The PF value of the fisheries sector in Cirebon Regency is > 1, which means that Cirebon Regency can attract customers from other regions and has a specialization in the fishery product market. And the results of the Location Quotient (LQ) analysis show a value of 2.75 (> 1), which means that the Cirebon Regency fishery sector is an economic base sector that can meet the needs of fishery products in its region and can export out of other regions. Regional development in Cirebon Regency can be maximized by increasing development in the fisheries sector as a base sector by making the fisheries sector one of the priorities for regional development investment
