    Effect of Red Ginger Essential Oil (Zingiber officinale Var. Rubrum) Addition on Chitosan Based Edible Coating towards Organoleptic Characteristics Pempek

    This study aims to determine the best concentration of red ginger essential oil addition (Zingiber officinale var. Rubrum) edible coating to chitosan on the organoleptic quality of pempek. The research method was experimental which consisted of 5 treatments, namely control, addition of red ginger essential oil with concentrations of 0%, 0.5%, 1%, and 1.5% with 20 panelists as replicates. Parameters observed included organoleptic characteristics (appearance, texture, aroma, taste, tooth test, and folding test) based on the panelists\u27 preference level using hedonic tests and chemical analysis (moisture content and fat content) and the shelf life of pempek. The data from the water content and fat content tests were analyzed descriptively, while the organoleptic test results were analyzed using non-parametric statistics with the test Friedman, if the test Friedman gave a rejection, multiple comparisons were performed and test was performed Bayes for decision making. The results showed that the best treatment in extending the shelf life of pempek was treatment D with the addition of 1% red ginger essential oil with a moisture content of 55.30% on the first day and 55.31% on the fourth day. While the fat content on the first day was 1.42% and on the fourth day it rose to 2.72% with the characteristics of appearance, texture, aroma, and taste still favored by the panelists

    Benefits in the Tilapia Growth, by Vetiver Grass in an Aquaponics System

    Tilapia aquaculture has growing vertiginously in the world, reaching 7.02 million tons in 2020. In Mexico, the same year reached 72.6 thousand tons. This production values have increased environmental impact and production costs. In Mexico there is a pre-Hispanic aquaponics system, where people culture corn, bean fishes and other organisms. Taken this system as basis, the aim this work was demonstrate the benefits in tilapia aquaculture, by Vetiver grass. Three mini-ponds make up by tilapia juveniles and Vetiver in aquaponics system, and one mini-pond without Vetiver, were cultured during ten weeks. The ammonia, nitrates, dissolved O2, pH etc., and also tilapia weights were recorded along experiment. Results indicated that, ammonia decreased, nitrate increased and tilapia weight increased significantly in mini-ponds with Vetiver than without Vetiver. A von Bertalanffy simplified model was used to calculate time required for tilapias reached 500 g (commercial size) with Vetiver and without Vetiver; it was 48.6 and 54.4 weeks respectively. An extrapolation to commercial tilapia aquaculture, will decreased production cost, due to lower amount of feed and water in tilapia hatcheries; also, a lower environmental impact by wastes discharged to coastal ecosystems, e.g., the amount of ammonia produced in mini-ponds with Vetiver was 4.56 times less than mini-pond without Vitier at week ten. Moreover, tilapia culture with Vetiver, have an aggregated value, because Vetiver is used in perfumes production, reaching 45.2 billons US dollars in 2020

    The Effect of Adding Citronella Oil (Cymbopogon nardus) on Edible Coating from Chitosan towards Organoleptic Characteristics of Pempek

    The purpose of this research was to determine the best concentration of citronella oil on the edible coating from chitosan towards the organoleptic quality of pempek. This research used an experimental method consisting of 5 treatments: without edible coating (control one), addition of citronella oil with a concentration of 0%, 1.5%, 2.5%, and 3.5% using 20 panelists as replications. The parameters observed in this research were organoleptic characteristics (appearance, texture, aroma, taste, teeth cutting test, and folding test) based on the panelists\u27 preference level using a hedonic test and chemical analysis (water content and fat content) and shelf life of pempek for each treatment. Chemical test data were analyzed descriptively while the organoleptic test results were analyzed using the Friedman test. Based on the Friedman test, it was found that pempek edible coating chitosan with the addition of citronella oil up to 2.5% is still preferred by panelists with a water content on 1st day was 53.08% and on 4th day was 53.05% while the fat content on 1st day was 1.46% and on 4th day was 2.72%. Based on the Bayes test, taste is the most important criterion compared to appearance, texture and aroma. Pempek edible coating chitosan with the addition of citronella oil has a shelf life of up to 4 days

    Outbreak of COVID-19: Impact on Socio-Economic Condition of Shrimp Farmers in South-West Coastal Bangladesh

    Aims: The study investigated the impacts of COVID-19 on livelihood status of coastal Shrimp farmers using farm size, production and income of South-west Bangladesh. Study Design: This study is empirical in its design. Data on socio-economic factors were collected randomly from selected Shrimp farmers.  Both open and closed ended questionnaire and directed to the Shrimp farmers of South-west coastal region of Bangladesh. Place and Duration of Study: The present study was carried out at Khulna district (seven selected Shrimp farming locations; viz., Paikgacha, Lasker, Goroikhali, Lata, Kapilmuni, Amadi and Koyra) of Bangladesh for a period of five months during pandemic of COVID-19 (April-August, 2020). Methodology: The key data were collected from face to face interview of 120 respondents. A brief outline about the nature and aim of the study was given to each respondent before the interview was commenced. The information of the respondents were written in the questionnaire immediately after completing the interview. Collected data were tabulated and analyzed using Microsoft Excel (version 2016). Results: Most of the respondents were middle aged (68 %) and living in nuclear families (71 %). Majority of the Shrimp farmers were illiterate (53 %). A greater proportion (66 %) involved in small scale Shrimp farming as a primary occupation followed by moderate (27 %) and large scale (7 %) Shrimp farming. More than half of the respondents earned >20000 BDT (USD$ 1 = 85 BDT) in each month before the pandemic. The production activities were seriously hampered due to unavailability of inputs including aquamedicine, disinfectants, labor crisis, seed and feed, growing the price of production materials and interrupted communication etc. due to the pandemic. However the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic reduced the production from their Shrimp ghers, drastically curtailed the market price, and consequently greatly compressed their income and livelihoods. Conclusion: The pandemic known as COVID-19 has had a catastrophic impact on human activities, with the Shrimp farming sector being no exception. This study revealed that the socio-economic and income status of the Shrimp farmers was noticeably vulnerable during the COVID-19 pandemic. Thus, large numbers of farmer families were unable to fulfill their minimum needs (food, income, and medical care)

    Research related to coral reef cover and diversity on Tinabo Besar Island was carried out in 2018, so it is necessary to conduct further research to determine the cover and diversity of coral reefs on Tinabo Besar Island in a sustainable manner (Time series) in order to improve the quality of coral reef ecosystems in the waters and management of national park area. This research was conducted from 9 July 2019 to 7 August 2019 at Taka Bonerate National Park, Selayar Islands, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Location of data collection on Tinabo Besar Island. The data taken includes coral reef cover with 4 stations representing the wind directions, namely north, south, east, and west. Coral reef data were collected using the LIT (Line Intercept Transact) method. Based on the research results, it was concluded that the percentage of coral reef cover on the island of Tinabo Besar, Taka Bonerate National Park, South Sulawesi ranged from 25.80% to 45.80%. The diversity is in the medium category with the index value (H\u27) ranging from 1 - 3 based on the Shannon - Wienner Index. The average percentage of life corals from the four stations is moderately damaged

    Marine Tourism Development Study to Improve Tourist Visit at Santolo Beach, Garut Regency

    This study aims to analyze the tourism potential of Santolo Beach and formulate a development strategy for Santolo Beach so that it can be developed as a marine tourism area to increase tourist visits. The research was conducted at Santolo Beach in January - March 2021. This study used a case study method using primary and secondary data. Primary data obtained from questionnaires and interviews as many as 60 respondents consisting of tourists and Santolo Beach managers using purposive sampling method as the research sample.Secondary data were obtained from related agencies. The analysis used is a SWOT analysis to analyze the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of Santolo Beach which will produce a development strategy for Santolo Beach. The results of the study are based on calculations carried out through SWOT analysis, the final value of the strengths is 1.64, the weaknesses are 1.44, the opportunities are 1.78 and the threats are 1.41. It can be seen from the results of these calculations that the Marine Tourism of Santolo Beach, Garut Regency has dominant strengths compared to weaknesses and greater opportunities than threats. If these values ​​are included in the SWOT Quadrant Diagram, it can be seen that the position of marine tourism development to increase tourist visits in Santolo Beach, Garut Regency is in the position of the Growth Strategy / SO Strategy, which is to make optimal use of the strengths and opportunities it has

    Assessment of Fish Farmers Use of Recommended Management Practices in Oyo State, Nigeria

    The enhancement of fish production through aquaculture can be brought about by enhancing farmers’ utilization of information on new innovations and recommended practices. This study was carried out to assess fish farmers’ use of recommended management practices in Oyo state. One hundred and fifty fish farmers were selected from the four agricultural zones in the state using multistage sampling technique. Primary Data were analyzed using descriptive and multiple regression analysis. Most of the fish farmers were male (88%), 78% had tertiary education and 68% had <11years of experience in fish farming. The study revealed that the rate of adoption of recommended aquaculture management practices was 46.7%. The regression analysis also revealed a linear relationship between the socio-economic characteristic and adoption of RAMP (R2 = 0879). Educational background (p<0.05), years of experience (p<0.1) and method of farming (p<0.05) were positively significant. The use of these management practices were also limited by different factors as revealed in the study. In conclusion, the adoption of recommended management by fish farmers is not encouraging enough. Strong cooperation between the fish farmers and extension agents was highly recommended

    The Use of Natural Anesthetic Ingredients for Clove Oil in Transportation of Juvenile Swordtail (Xiphophorus helleri)

    This research aims to determine the most effective concentration of clove oil and the best period in the transportation of swordtail (Xiphophorius helleri) with the highest survival rate. This research used the factorial randomized block design (FRBD) which consisting of four treatments of concentration (10 x 10-3 mL, 13 x 10-3 mL, 16 x 10-3 mL), three treatments of duration (3 hours, 5 hours, 7 hours), and repeated three times. The measured parameters are induction time, conscious recovery time, and survival rate after transportation. The results showed that the treatment of 10 x 10-3 mL with the duration of 5 hours was an effective treatment with an average induction time of 17 minutes 56 seconds, a conscious recovery time of 7 minutes 37 seconds, the survival rate of 100% at post-transportation and after 7 days of rearing is 83%. Water quality after transportation are temperature (24.6 ℃), DO (14.72 mg / L), pH (6.42) and ammonia (0.0043 mg/L)

    Length-weight Relationship and Condition Factor of Cichlids in Eniong and Lower Cross Rivers, Niger Delta, Nigeria

    Length-weight relationship and condition factor are essential parameters used in determination of growth and well-being of fish. The length-weight relationship and condition factor of eight species of cichlids were examined from a total of 358 cichlids belonging to fourteen species and seven genera. Sampling was between January and June, 2020 in Eniong River and lower Cross River in the Niger Delta from three stations: station one in Eniong river, station two at the confluence of Eniong and lower Cross River, and station three at the lower Cross River. The length and weight of each fish was measured to the nearest millimeter and gram, respectively. The length-weight relationship (LWR) and condition factor (K) of the species Coptodon dageti, Coptodon guineensis, Coptodon zilli, Chromidotilapia guntheri, Hemichromis elongatus, Oreochromis niloticus, Pelmatolapia mariae and Sarotherodon melanotheron were determined using standard methods. Total length of fish ranged from 12.9 ± 5.01 in H. elongatus to 20.7 ± 3.37cm in C. zilli. Total weight ranged from 24.8 ± 13.80 in H. elongatus to 146.4 ± 68.0 g in C. zilli. The exponent b ranged from 1.54 for H. elongatus to 3.34 in Pelmatolapia mariae. The coefficients of determination (r2) varied between H. elongatus (0.74) and O. niloticus (0.96). Fulton’s condition factor (K) ranged from 1.2 6 ± 0.50 (H. elongatus) to 1.89 ± 0.43 (O. niloticus). Length-weight relationship revealed negative allometry for six species and positive allometry for two species (O. niloticus and P. mariae). Cichlids in this study were observed to be in good condition, as the K values were greater than one

    Trace Metals in Selected Fish Species from Five Cowries Creek, Southwest Nigeria: Consumer Safety Assessment

    This study aims to examine trace metals (Pb, Cd, Cr, Zn, and Cu) concentration in muscle tissues of four fish species from Five Cowries Creek and assess the safety risks posed by consuming these fish species. For this purpose, fish species such as Cynoglossus senegalensis, Mugil cephalus, Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus and Pseudotolithus typus were procured monthly from anglers in Five Cowries Creek, Lagos, from February to May, 2019. The fish muscle tissues were digested according to the international standards, and the trace metals were measured using an atomic absorption spectrophotometer (AAS). Results revealed that the ranking order of trace element concentrations followed this sequence: Pb > Cr > Zn > Cu > Cd. There were significant differences (P < 0.05) in Pb and Cr among the fish species. Consumer health risk was evaluated using non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risk indices. The results showed that EDI and target hazard quotient (THQ) of Cr, Zn, Cu and Cd suggested that fish species consumption did not pose risk to consumer health. Nevertheless, the estimated daily intake (EDI) along with THQ of Pb indicated potential health risks to consumers (children and adult) of Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus. The target hazard index (THI) of trace elements in all investigated fish species exceeded the guideline value of 1, indicating an adverse health risk for exposed consumers. However, the carcinogenic risk of Pb was negligible for children and adult consumers of fish species. The results are anticipated to create alertness among the public on the safety risks as a result of consuming metal-contaminated fish. Authorised regulatory agencies should control the unregulated uses of Five Cowries Creek, Lagos and associated water bodies through the enforcement of various regulations, policies and laws
