    Digitization in Detecting Fish Freshness Quality: Literature Review

    Fish contain a lot of nutrients that are very good for the body, but fish are often traded in a postmortem state with poor quality. One of the reasons is the difficulty of detecting the quality of fish freshness. Many studies currently make applications and special tools to see the fish quality in the digitalization of tools to facilitate human work. The method used is by identifying digital images, acoustic techniques, and electronic noses. In digital image identification, the fish’s eye image is applied by taking pictures of the condition of the fish on a smartphone device and then processing it using the small square method or curve fitting. After that, the identification of the acoustic form utilizes sound waves emitted to the observed target. In addition, the electric nose method is carried out by using the nose\u27s working principle, which receives a response to odors that arise from rotting fish

    Transportation of Blackmoor (Carassius auratus) Goldfish Variety with Low-Temperature Treatment at Different Durations

    This research aims to analyze the induction time and recovery time of Blackmoor Goldfish (Carrasius auratus) with different low temperatures as a transportation method, to find out how to handle it with a proper temperature reduction in its transportation, and to find out the optimum time period in its transportation This study was carried out from November 2020 to February 2021 in the Ciparanje wet laboratory, Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, Universitas Padjadjaran. This research was conducted experimentally using the Factorial Randomized Block Design (FRBD) which consisted of two factors, namely four levels of treatment (12 °C, 16 °C, 20 °C, and 24°C (control)) and three levels of transportation duration (3, 5, and 7 hours) which were repeated three times. This research uses a closed transportation system. The research results showed that the low-temperature treatment of 16°C and a transportation duration of 3 hours was the best treatment with an induction time of 02:37, recovery time of 07:13, and having a post-transportation survival rate of 90% and post-maintenance for 7 days of 85 %. The DO parameter is ±7.53 mg/L, pH is ± 7.38 and ammonia is ±0.0016 mg/L

    Efficacy of Probiotics and Bioflocs on the Production Performance of Tiger Shrimp Penaeus monodon and Pacific White Shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei during Polyculture Operation

    Shrimp culture has been developed during the last three decades and the production of farmed shrimp reached its peak. However, the shrimp production was decreased all over the World including in Asian Countries because of the mass mortality due to the outbreak of several diseases predominantly White Spot Syndrome Virus (WSSV) which caused extensive economic damage to the shrimp culture industry. Various Polyculture technologies of shrimp with shellfish, finfish or seaweeds have been implemented to reduce economic damages by mass mortality of shrimp. The present study was conducted with Tiger shrimp Penaeus monodon and Pacific white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei through Polyculture operation to determine optimum stocking ratios for induction of best performance and highest production rates. Initially, the experiments were conducted with different ratios and combinations of stocking densities 1:1, 2:1 and 1:2 ratios of Penaeus monodon and Litopenaeus vannamei with control group feed with commercial feed, the other group certain Probiotic bacteria such as Bacillus licheniformis and Lactobacillus rhamnosus added in feed, the third group both the Probiotic bacteria and the addition of external Carbon source from sugarcane molasses in the form of Bioflocs for 100 days. To ascertain further interaction of ratios influence, 20:10, 20:12, 20:15 ratios of stocking and Monoculture experiments were conducted. In both the experiments the Survival rate, Final body weights, Weight Gain, Feed conversion ratio, Specific growth rates, Average daily growth rates, Protein efficiency ratio, and Productivity rates were significantly different (P<0.05) in all the different treatments both for P. monodon and L. vannamei. From the results obtained 20:10 ratio of P. monodon and L. vannamei was considered as the best ratio of stocking, which yielded the highest production rates in all the Control, Probiotic added and both Probiotic & Biofloc added groups. The results obtained in the present study clearly demonstrate that the rearing of taxonomically similar species with optimum stocking ratios seems to improve the efficiency of shrimp farming and substantially increasing the production rates. So, this polyculture of P. monodon and L. vannamei can be considered as an alternative approach towards the establishment of sustainable shrimp farming activity which will yield good economic returns

    First Record of Pseudotolithus senegallus (Cuvier, 1830) in the Mediterranean Sea

    This article firstly records Pseudotolithus senegallus (Cuvier, 1830) species in the Mediterranean Sea. juvenile specimen of Pseudotolithus senegallus (Cuvier, 1830) with total length 15.5 cm and total weight 37 g, was obtained by experimental  bottom trawling using  commercial bottom trawler (stretched mesh size: 15 mm; duration time: four hours; location: east of Suez Canal main stream in the Mediterranean, off Port Said). Opercle lining jet black, showing through a dark blotch externally. Axils of pectoral-fin base dark, distal portion of caudal fin darkish whereas anal and pelvic fins are yellowish. Gas bladder with a pair of arborescent appendages, dividing into short anterior branches and a dozen or so long tubular posterior appendages along sides of bladder beyond its tip. I suggest the method of introduction to the Mediterranean waters is ballast water of ships as it is recorded only from Mauritania to Angola on the western coast of Africa

    Fish bones are the largest contributor of waste from the fish processing industry which has not been used optimally. Fish bones have a high calcium content so they can be used as raw material for fish bone flour. This article aims to explain the use of fish bone into fish bone flour, how to process it, and the quality of fish bone flour by physicochemical testing. Fish bone flour can be obtained by extraction using water, alkaline solution and acid solution. The quality characteristics of bone flour can be seen from the water content, ash content, protein content and fat content. Based on several studies, the drying time and temperature affect the physicochemical characteristics of the resulting product

    The Influence of Water Physical Chemical Quality on the Zooplankton Community Structure in the Upstream Citarum River of West Java Province

    The Citarum River is the longest river in West Java Province which is used for various human activities to produce a load of waste input into water bodies which cause changes in the physical and chemical parameters of the waters that will affect the life of aquatic organisms that live in it, one of which is zooplankton. Zooplankton can be used as a water bioindicator because it has a high level of sensitivity to pollution, especially in freshwater. The purpose of this research is to determine the physical-chemical quality of the water in the Citarum River and its influence on the structure of the zooplankton community in this environment. The research was carried out from August 2020 until October 2020 with a purposive sampling method. Sampling was carried out at 5 stations with 6 repetitions every 1 week. The parameters observed were physical and chemical parameters of the waters, an abundance of zooplankton, diversity index, and dominance index. The results showed that the composition of zooplankton in the Upstream Citarum River was 15 genus consisting of 2 phyla. The abundance of zooplankton obtained ranged from 21 - 51 individuals/L. The Simpson diversity index (D) obtained a range between 0.59 - 0.73 for the high category. The dominance index obtained ranges from 0.27 to 0.41 for the low category. Dissolved oxygen and pH are the parameters that most influence the presence of most of the identified zooplankton orders

    The Impact of Floating Net Cage (FNC) on Primary Productivity in Cirata Reservoir Waters

    Cirata Reservoir is one of the three cascade reservoirs fed by the Citarum Watershed with an area of ​​62 km2 (6.200 ha) and has a water volume of 1.900 million m3. The great potential of the waters in the Cirata Reservoir is utilized by the local community as a source of livelihood, namely by conducting aquaculture activities using floating net cages (FNC) in excess. FNC is thought to be a source of waste that reduces reservoir water quality. This research aims to determine the impact of FNC cultivation on primary productivity with different FNC densities at each station. The research was conducted in Cianjur Regency by taking on three stations, namely in the areas of Jangari, Maleber, and Patok Beusi on November 6 - December 8, 2019. The method used in the research was purposive sampling then analyzed in detail and quantitatively. The results show that reservoir waters have an average of physical parameters, namely temperature 32.2-32.6oC, transparency 0.59-0.68 meters, pH 7.1-7.3, carbon dioxide 15.4-16.1 mg / l, Dissolved Oxygen 6.9-7.3 mg / l, Biochemical Oxygen Demand 6.1-7.8 mg / l, nitrate 0.208-0.222 mg / l, ammonia 0.002833-0.003056 mg / l, phosphate 0,165-0,167 mg / l and primary productivity 240,36-277,90 mgC/m3/hour. This shows that the water indicator is still classified as good because it does not exceed the water quality standard

    Culture Pond Influences the Growth and Survival of Clarias gariepinus Fingerlings reared in Poly and Monoculture

    Monoculture is the rearing of single species of fish in a pond while polyculture is the farming of two or more species in the same physical space. This study aims to compare the growth parameters of Clarias gariepinus fingerlings in monoculture and polyculture, using concrete and earthen ponds in a randomized complete block design. The polyculture, comprised of Clarias gariepinus and Oreochromis niloticus. 480 fingerlings were used; the stocking density was 40fish in a 3x2x1.5m depth with initial weight (4.84±0.11547) for C. gariepinus in monoculture and 40 each in polyculture with an initial pooled weight of O. niloticus (50g) replicated thrice, it was fed for eight weeks with commercial feed (40% crude protein). Weekly, random sampling was done to measure the growth and adjust the feeding rate. The results revealed that polyculture has the best mean final weight (160.07±0.18559g) and weight gain of 155.29, while the highest total length (45.666±3.179) was recorded in monoculture for Clarias gariepinus reared in an earthen pond. The polyculture had the highest specific growth rate (2.46), Relative growth rate (246.49), and condition factor (0.184). There was a significant difference (P<0.05) in monoculture of both concrete and earthen ponds

    Profitability of Using Commercial Tilapia Feed to Produce Three Different Sizes of Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus L.) Fingerlings in Ghana

    Aims: To determine the profitability of using a commercial tilapia feed to produce three different size ranges (1.0-1.9, 2.0-2.9 and 5.0-5.9 g) of Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus fingerlings in hapa-in-pond system. Study Design: Completely randomized design. Place and Duration of Study: The Aquaculture Research and Development Centre (ARDEC), Akosombo, of Water Research Institute (WRI) of Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Ghana, from March to May, 2020. Methodology: Fish growth study was carried out in three (3) fine mesh netting hapas, each of dimensions 5.0 x 2.0 x 1.2 m. Nile tilapia fry at initial mean weight 0.03 ± 0.01 g were stocked at a density of 50 fish m-2 and they were fed at 20 % body weight five times daily. The feeding of the fish continued until those in all the 3 hapas attained a mean weight of at least 5.0 g. Then the experiment was terminated and all the survived fish in each hapa were harvested, counted, and their individual body weights were measured. Growth performance indicators and profitability of producing the various size categories (1.0-1.9, 2.0-2.9 and 5.0-5.9) were determined. Results: The fry attained the target size ranges of 1.0-1.9, 2.0-2.9 and 5.0-5.9 g in 4, 6 and 9 weeks respectively. There were significant differences (ANOVA, P = 0.03) among final mean weights, weight gains, feed intakes, daily weight gains, feed efficiencies and harvested biomass among all size ranges, with those of 5.0-5.9 g being significantly higher (Tukey’s HSDT, P < 0.02). Sizes of fingerlings produced correlate positively with cost of feed used. The profit indices ranged from 2.57 to 10.22, with the highest recorded in the 1.0-1.9 g fingerlings and the least in those of 5.0-5.9 g. Conclusion: The results indicated that, at the current Nile tilapia fingerlings cost and the time taken to produce the various size categories, the 1.0-1.9 g production is the most profitable

    Haematological and Histopathological Examinations of African Catfish (Clarias gariepinus) Exposed to Sub-Lethal Concentrations of Paraquat

    The study was designed to investigate the sub-lethal effects of paraquat on haematological parameters and histopathology of the gills, skin and liver of Clarias gariepinus juveniles of mean weight (38.26±1.20g) and length (17.50±1.55cm). The fish were exposed to 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50% of the 96hrsLC50 value of 107mg/l estimated from the 96 hours acute toxicity test. Blood samples were collected into heparinized tubes for the analyses of some haematological parameters, while the gills, skin and liver were also removed for histological examinations following standard procedures. The result revealed a significant reduction (P < 0.05) in the values of red blood cells (RBCs), haemoglobin (Hgb), packed cell volume (PCV) and erythrocytes indices from the control. The white blood cells (WBCs) and platelets (Plt) were however increasing significantly (P < 0.05) from those of the control as the test concentrations increased. The histology of the gills revealed some alterations such as epithelial proliferation, vacuolation of the mucus, hyperplasia of epithelial tissue of the gill filament, lifting and necrosis of the secondary lamellae. The exposed skin showed mucous cell proliferation, erosion of the epithelial lining, hypertrophy, necrosis of epithelial cells and widening of the epidermal and dermal layers. The liver exhibited cellular proliferation, sinusoid enlargement, congestion of the central vein, paranchymatous degeneration, vacuolar degeneration, pyknotic nucleic degeneration, legions and necrosis with severity as concentration of paraquat increases. The gills and skin were observed to be the most affected tissues in this study. The study also revealed that paraquat was toxic to C. gariepinus and causes some haematological and histopathological alterations in the fish blood and tissues at concentrations higher than 30mg/l. Therefore, the use of paraquat by farmers should be regulated particularly in area close to the aquatic environment
