Physico-chemical Parameters and Heavy Metals Distribution in Selected Shell Fishes along the Opuro-Ama Creek in Rivers State of Nigeria
The study was conducted to determine the heavy metals concentration in selected shell fishes (U. tangeri, C. amnicola, T. fuscatus, P. monodon), sediment and water. The samples were collected from a fishing port along the Opuro-ama Creek in Rivers State of Nigeria. analysis for Manganese (Mn), Iron (Fe), Cobalt (Co) and Zinc (Zn) were done using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer. The order of metal accumulation in these shellfishes, sediment and water were; C. amnicola (Fe > Zn > Cu > Co > Mn); U. tangeri (Fe > Zn > Cu > Co > Mn); T. fuscatus (Fe > Cu > Zn > Co > Mn); P. monodon (Fe > Co > Zn > Cu = Mn); Sediment (Fe > Zn > Co > Cu > Mn); Water (Fe > Cu > Mn > Co = Zn). There was statistical difference (p<0.05) in metals concentration in the soft tissues in all the shellfish. From the results, the concentration of the metals in the tissues of all the shell fishes, the interstitial water and the sediment sampled from the creek were within the permissible limit recommended by the Department of Petroleum Resources (DRP), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and World Health Organization (WHO) except for Fe which was above the recommended limit. The physicochemical parameters of the interstitial water such as pH, Temperature, Conductivity, Total Dissolved Solids (TSS) Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD), Dissolved Oxygen (DO), and Salinity were within the acceptable levels in the guidelines for drinking]. Although Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) and the Total Suspended Solids (TSS) were slightly higher than the recommended limit of these metals by Department of Petroleum Resources (DRP). This indicates that if theses metals are not checked, they may increase the potential for bioaccumulation in the shellfishes and the creek as well. Therefore, there is need for regular monitoring of this creek to avoid future deterioration
Potential Use of Butterfly Pea (Clitoria ternatea) as Fish Feed Ingredient: A Minireview
This article aims examines the effect of giving Butterfly Pea (Clitora ternatea) in feed on the growth of various types of fish and the nutritional content of Butterfly Pea. The method used in this literature study is to review several research articles on the use of Butterfly Pea on fish growth, and the nutritional content of various parts of the Butterfly Pea plant. The collected review data is then compiled into a manuscript. Various parts of the Butterfly Pea plant such as leaves, flowers, and seeds contain protein, lipids, fiber, and carbohydrates. The largest protein content is found in seeds, reaching 40.59%. The application of leaf meal, flower meal, and seed meal to tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), African catfish (Clarias Gariepinus), Swordtail Fish Head (Xiphophorus helleri) was not significantly different from control and did not have a negative effect on growth. In conclusion, leaf flour, seed flour, and Butterfly Pea flour can be used as alternative protein source feed ingredients
The Contribution of Aquaculture Sector in Regional Development of West Bandung District, West Java Province
The aquaculture sector is included in the economic sector that has a role in local economic development. However, it has received less attention from the government and the business world. This study aims to analyze the base and non-base sectors of aquaculture, the contribution of the aquaculture sector and the market power of aquaculture commodities in the development of the West Bandung District area. The methods used in this study were qualitative and quantitative by using purposive sampling method. The data was used as secondary data cross-section and time-series 2018-2020. While the primary data with a total of 31 respondents for the head of the field of aquaculture and cultivators in West Bandung District using interview and questionnaire techniques. The analysis used is Location Quotient, Dynamic Location Quotient, Shift Share, Trade Area Capture and Pull Factor. The results of the analysis of Location Quotient value is 1.81 and Dynamic Location Quotient value is 1.01. This means that the aquaculture sector in West Bandung District is included in the base sector and will remain the base sector in the future. The Shift Share analysis shows that the contribution of the fisheries sector to GRDP has changed; in 2018-2019, it was 511.34, and in 2019-2020 it was -832.24 which resulted in a decrease in production. The results of the analysis of Trade Area Capture and Pull Factor show an average TAC value of 80.717,041> 49.312,14, which means they can capture trade opportunities from other regions. The average PF value is 1.64, which means that aquaculture products produced by West Bandung District can attract customers from the other areas. The development of the West Bandung District area can be optimized by setting the aquaculture sector as a regional development priority that can provide protein food, jobs and foreign exchange
The Impact of Addition of Soybean Oil to Increase the Growth, EPA and HSI in Biofloc Catfish
This study aimed to determine the level of increasing of omega-3 fatty acids EPA, Hepatosomatic Index (HSI), Specific Growth Rates (SGR), and Average Daily Growth (ADG) with the addition of soybean oil to feed as supplement. This research method uses a Complete Randomized Design (CRD) consisting of 4 treatments and 4 tests. The different concentration of soybean oil in the feed were considered as treatment, A (0%); B (2%); C (4%); and D (6%). The test fish used was catfish (Clarias sp) from Bandung Regency, West Java. Feed as much as 2.5% of the biomass weight is given 2 times a day, namely at 07 a.m and 16 p.m for 30 days in a biofloc tank. The conclusion of this study was that the addition of soybean oil showed the best result is in the addition of 4% soybean oil to the feed. The dose showed that the addition of soybean oil as much as 4% to the feed was able to have the best influence on the increase in Omega-3 eicosapentaenoic acid/EPA fatty acids by 25 mg/100g with the highest Hepatosomatic Index (HSI) value of 1.52 ± 0.11, the best Specific Growth rate (SGR) value of 1.1% and Average Daily Growth (ADG) value of 0.27%
Analysis of Sales Marketing Margins and Marketing Efficiency of Gillnet Fisherman in Nusantara Fishery Port Palabuhanratu, Sukabumi
The marketing process of gillnet fishing catch sales in Palabuhanratu is not balanced. Gillnet fishing catch sales are not through auction due to the small catch. So that fishermen have no other way than to sell the catch to middlemen because of the consequences of capital borrowing. This study aims to determine marketing activities and marketing margins, costs and profits fisherman gillnets at the Palabuhanratu Nusantara Fishing Port, Sukabumi. This research was conducted from February 2022 to June 2022. The method used is a descriptive method with a case study approach. The types of data used is primary data by using a questionnaire. The sampling technique used in this research is snowball sampling. A snowball sampling technique is a step in selecting sources at the time in the field or based on previous informants\u27 instructions so that researchers get complete and in-depth data. Based on the data analysis, The biggest cost are on channel II range from IDR 3.800- IDR 15.500 Followed by channel IV range from IDR 6.150- IDR 14.000 and the lowest is channel III range from IDR 3000- IDR 7.000. The higest profit is channel II range from IDR 8.200- IDR 17.970 and the lowest profit is channel III range from IDR 1.200- IDR 6.000. The marketing channel that has the smallest marketing margin and the largest share margin is channel type 3, with a margin value of between IDR. 10,000-IDR.5,000 with an average of IDR. 6,700,- and share margins ranging from 64.28% - 77.78% with an average of 71.6% followed by type 1 channels with marketing margins ranging from IDR.7,000-IDR.20,000 with an average of IDR.11,800, - and share margin ranging from 63.3% - 72% with an average of 67.28%.The results showed that there are 4 patterns of marketing channels, where the most efficient marketing channel is through channel type three followed by channel type one. However, it should be underlined that marketing efficiency is not only seen from marketing margins and share margins, although type 3 channel is the most efficient channel, but when viewed from the quality and freshness of fish, type 1 channel is better. To be able to increase the income of fishermen should process abundant fish products into frozen food so that it can be absorbed by the market. In addition, there is a need for government agencies that are able to fight for fishermen in obtaining capital and reactivating existing cooperatives
Fortification of Red Tilapia Bone Flour as a Source of Calcium on Doughnut Preference Level
This research aims to determine the percentage of addition of red tilapia bone flour as a source of calcium in the most preferred doughnut. The research was conducted on January until February 2022 at the Fishery Product Processing Laboratory, Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, Universitas Padjadjaran and the Test Services Laboratory, Faculty of Agricultural Industrial Technology, Universitas Padjadjaran. The research method used was experimental method, that made doughnuts with different levels of addition of red tilapia bone flour, which consists of 5 treatments (0%; 2.5%; 5%; 7.5%; and 10%) with 20 panelists semi-trained as a test to determine the preference level of the panelists to doughnuts. Observations were made on organoleptic tests and chemical tests. The most preferred fortification of red tilapia bone flour on doughnut was the 5% treatment with the value of the preference level on appearance, texture, and aroma being 7 (preferred) and taste was 9 (very preferred). The results of chemical test analysis on 5% treatment for moisture content is 18,91%, ash content is 2,97%, protein content is 6,29%, fat content is 27,95%, carbohydrate content is 43,88%, and calcium content is 0,1007% or 1006,60 mg/kg
Analysis of the Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on the Income of Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) Fishers in Darmaraja District, Sumedang Regency
This study aims to determine fishers’ income, and health application protocols among tilapia fishers (Oreochromis niloticus) in Jatigede Reservoir, specifically, in Darmaraja District, Sumedang Regency, during the COVID-19 pandemic. The purposive sampling technique was used, where data collection is done using a questionnaire technique. Primary data was obtained using a questionnaire to determine knowledge about the COVID-19 pandemic, and its health protocols. Secondary data were obtained from various sources such as literature, journals, theses, books, and the Sumedang District Fisheries Service. The amount of profit obtained from the revenue price minus production costs, which are divided into fixed costs (ship maintenance costs, machinery, and fishing gear depreciation), and variable costs (consumption costs and fuel costs). The results showed that the COVID-19 pandemic had an impact on fishers understanding and the application of health protocols. This resulted into decrease in the number of fishing trips and a decrease in fish prices affecting supply and demand instability leading to reduction of tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) fishers profits in Darmaraja District, Sumedang Regency
The Effect of Pineapple Extract (Ananas comosus L) on the Quality of Anchovy Fish Sauce
This research aims to determine the appropriate concentration of pineapple extract to produce anchovy fish sauce with quality that is by the Indonesian National Standard (SNI). The research was conducted from June to September 2021. This research used an experimental method with 4 additional treatments of pineapple extract concentrate, that is 0%, 10%, 15%, 20%. Each treatment used three replications. Observations were made by chemical tests for protein, fat, ash, water and pH levels. The results showed that each treatment had a significantly different effect on the levels of protein, fat, water, ash and the pH value of fish sauce. The treatment according to the Indonesian National Standard (SNI) was the addition of 10% pineapple extract with an average protein value of 15.88%
Fatty Acids Composition of Two Commonly Consumed Freshwater Fishes (Clarias gariepinus and Chrysichthyes nigrodigitatus) from the Cross River at Ahaha, Obubra, Nigeria
Fish oils are good sources of essential fatty acids beneficial to human health by helping the body in preventing diseases and enhancing proper growth and development. This study is aimed at investigating the quantitative and qualitative composition of fatty acids in two commonly consumed and most abundant freshwater fishes (Clarias gariepinus and Chrysichthyes nigrodigitatus) from the Cross River at Ahaha, Obubra. The oil was converted to fatty acids methyl esters (FAME) and the fatty acids evaluated by gas chromatography – mass spectrometry using retention time method. The fatty acids profiles include saturated fatty acids (SFAs), monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). The composition varied from 0.06 – 24.00% of SFAs, 0.23 – 21.40% of MUFAs and 0.23 – 12.22% of PUFAs in the both species. The major SFAs were palmitic (C16:0) and stearic (C18:0) acids while the most abundant MUFA was oleic (C18:1) acid. Dominant PUFAs in the both specie were linoleic (C18:2), eicosapentaenoic (EPA, C20:5) and docosahexaenoic (DHA, C22:6) acids. Quantitatively the composition of various fatty acids was in the order SFAs < MUFAs < PUFAs although not significantly different (p< 0.05) in the species. Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus had higher total fatty acids (TFA), PUFAs and omega –3 / omega –6 ratio than C. gariepinus with higher levels omega -6 fatty acids. The ratios of PUFA/SFA were higher in C. nigrodigitatus although both were greater than the minimum value (0.4) recommended by World Health Organization. The result indicates that the species had high quality essential fatty acids especially DHA and EPA although relatively higher in C. nigrodigitatus. Hence these species have the potentials to serve as the natural dietary supplement for all important omega -3 fatty acids
The Effect of Adding Catfish Bone Flour on the Preference Level of Catfish Meatballs
Catfish is a commodity in great demand by the Indonesian people because it is easy to process. The utilization of fish bone waste is not optimal because many people only use meat. Fish bones can be processed into flour as a food additive with high calcium. This research aims to determine the appropriate percentage of catfish bone flour added to catfish meatballs and its effects on the preference level among the panelists. This research was conducted at the Fishery Product Processing Laboratory, Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, Universitas Padjadjaran. This research used an experimental method with 5 treatments of adding catfish bone flour into catfish meatballs: 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20%. The assessment of the level of preference was carried out by 20 semi-trained panelists. This research observed the organoleptic attributes (appearance, aroma, taste, and texture) and physical characteristic (folding test). Statistical analysis of this research used non-parametric statistics such as Friedman test, followed by a multiple comparison test, and determined the best treatment using the Bayes method. The results of statistical analysis and Bayes showed that the addition of 10% catfish bone flour to catfish meatballs was the best treatment preferred by the panelists
