A Mini-Review: The Role of Chitosan in Aquaculture Fish Health Management
Sustainable fish farming activities are a hope for all cultivators. Suitable and stable environmental conditions are important factors for the sustainability of fish to grow, reproduce, avoid stress and disease. Providing a balanced diet is one of the environmental conditions that must be considered. Diets equipped with additives have been in great demand by researchers in the field of aquaculture, one of which is chitosan. Chitosan (β-(1-4)-N-acetyl-D-glucosamine) is a natural polymer derived from the exoskeleton of insects, crustaceans, and fungal cell walls, through the process of deacetylation of chitin base. The biological properties of chitosan include immunostimulant, antibacterial, wound healing, analgesic, anti-oxidant, anti-tumor and intestinal microbial control. In addition, chitosan is also a safe additive. Based on some of the biological properties of chitosan, it is possible to apply it in cultivation. Therefore, it is of great interest to researchers in the field of aquaculture. The purpose of this article is to inform the effect of chitosan on fish which includes antibacterial activity against several types of bacteria that attack fish, immunostimulant activity and growth in fish. Based on the results of research and tests from several researchers described above, chitosan has the potential to be used in the management of fish health, because it has antibacterial, immunostimulating effects, is safe to use for sustainable aquaculture because it does not have toxic effects and has a positive impact on the growth of various fish species, and can eliminate heavy metals in the fish body. Chitosan can be given through feed or injection. Chitosan can be applied effectively for the management of fish health, if the concentration used is appropriate, adjusted for the type of fish and the type of disease
Stock Expectations and Virtual Population Analysis of Three Mullets Species in the Shatt Al-Arab River, Iraq
The research was conducted as many as 456 individuals of Planiliza abu, 500 individuals of P. klunzengeri and 600 individuals of P. subviridis. The purpose of this study was to analyze the frequency of fish lengths to determine stock expectations and analyze species population estimates using the VPA (Virtual Population Analysis) Method in the Shatt Al-Arab River from November 2015 to October 2016 using the FiSAT II program. The results showed that the growth patterns of the three species were negative allometric. The values of L∞ for the three species were 21.2, 27.0 and 29.3 cm, respectively. The rates of total mortality (Z), fishing (F), natural (M) and exploitation (E) for P. abu were 2.69, 1.09, 1.60 and 0.59, P. klunzengeri 2.49, 1.08, 1.41 and 0.57 and P. subviridis 1.51, 0.84, 0.68 and 0.45, respectively. The present exploitation rates (E) for all species are lower than the biological target reference points expressing a case of under-exploitation of the species. VPA showed that the maximum fishing mortality for the three species occurred in the mid-lengths, with maximum values at the length of 15 cm for P. abu and 17 cm for P. klunzengeri and P. subviridis. The mullets species catches have not met the criteria for good management (Lc50< Lm50), indicating that the fish may be vulnerable to capture before they mature. Accordingly, the present study proposes that the officials in fishery management can get more by yields through increasing the fishing activities on these species but must be matching the mesh sizes with the fishing recommendation to assure resource availability and sustainability
EPA, DHA, ADG and FCR in Biofloc Catfish for Improving the Quality of the Nutrient with Fish Oil Administration
This research aims to determine the right dose of fish oil so that it has a good effect on the growth of catfish (Clarias sp.) biofloc as seen from the content of Omega-3 (EPA and DHA), daily average weight gain (ADG) and ratio ratio. feed (FCR). The research was carried out in September and October 2021 at the Ciparanje Green House, Padjadjaran University. The method used is an experimental method using a completely randomized design (CRD) consisting of four treatments with four replications with different levels of fish oil administration, namely 0% (A) as control, 2% (B), 4% (C), and 6%. (D). The fish used is Clarias sp. Fish cultivation from cultivators in Cileunyi village as many as 240 fish weighing 20.04 grams and an average length of 14 cm were randomly placed into 16 fiber tanks based on treatment, while each tank was filled with 15 fish. The size of the fiber tub used was 68 x 68 x 68 cm3 as a cultivation container. The feed given is commercial pellets with the trademark Hi-Provite 781. Fish oil used is fish oil. Parameters observed included omega-3 content, ADG, FCR, and water quality. The results showed that the optimum application of fish oil in increasing the value of EPA content was 36 mg/100g and DHA was 148.5 mg/100 g, the highest ADG value was 0.45%, and the best FCR value was 1.2 and water quality. which is still within the recommended limits in aquaculture using biofloc, provides evidence that the application of fish oil in biofloc aquaculture can improve the nutritional quality of catfish
Increasing Growth Performance and Omega-3 of Pangasius Catfish with Fish Oil Administration
This research aims to examine the effect of adding fish oil on the growth performance and content of Omega-3 fatty acids in Pangasius catfish (Pangasius sp). The research carried out in October and November 2021 at the Faculty of Fisheries, Padjadjaran University. Pangasius catfish with an average weight of 12.41 gram were reared in a fiber tank with stocked with 15 giving a stocking density of 10 fish-1 m2. The fish were reared for 28 days. This study used a completely randomized design with five treatments with fish oil supplemented to the feed at 0%, 3%, 4%, 5%, and 6% with each treatment consisting of three replications. The fish were fed twice a day at 08:00 am and 16:00 pm West Indonesian time, at a feeding level of 3% of the fish biomass per day. The feed used was pellet for catfish from Hi Provite PF 781 brand. Parameter tested included SGR, feed efficiency, omega-3 content and water quality. The result showed optimum application of fish oil increasing growth performance, the highest SGR was 2.07% day-1, the best efficiency feed 85.85%, EPA content was 30.7 mg-1 100 gram and DHA was 10.6 mg-1 100 gram
Comparative Analysis of Some Trace Metals in Municipal and Spring Water from Makerere University and Selected Springs in Bunga, Uganda
Aims: Access to clean and safe water is a challenge globally. This study assessed the levels of three trace metals (iron, copper and chromium) and chlorine in water samples from municipal water supply points in Makerere University and springs from Bunga, Uganda.
Study Design: This research employed a quantitative analytical method.
Place and Duration of Study: Samples were collected from five different sites of Makerere University halls and Bunga springs, Kampala. This study was undertaken between May 2021 and October 2021.
Methodology: Trace metal content and free chlorine of the water samples were determined and calibrated using multiparameter Palintest 7100 photometer.
Results: Analytical results indicated that the average iron, copper and chromium and chlorine content of the tap water samples from the municipal supply system were 0.0125 ± 0.00433 mg/L, 0.155 ± 0.0384 mg/L, 0.0325 ± 0.01479 mg/L and 3.045 ± 0.180623 mg/L, respectively. The corresponding mean values for water samples from Bunga springs were 0.0080 ± 0.0109 mg/L, 0.0124 ± 0.2019 mg/L, 0.056 ± 0.02073 mg/L and 0.00 ± 0.00 mg/L, respectively. These average values were within the maximum permissible limits of 0.3 mg/L, 0.5 mg/L and 0.05 mg/L for iron, copper and chromium in drinking water as recommended by the World Health Organization. However, springs A and B had chromium concentrations above the recommended value of 0.05 mg/L.
Conclusion: Trace metal and chlorine content of the sampled water were within compliance limits except for chromium which exceeded at springs A and B in Bunga, Kampala
Composition and Catch Rate of Purse Seine Fishery Unit at the Tegal Fish Landing, Central Java
Purse seine fishing gear is one of the fishing gear used by the fisherman at the Tegal Fish Landing to catch pelagic fish. This study aims to analyze the composition of purse seine catches and catch rates based on the number of catches and trips to sea, determine the selectivity of purse seine fishing gear base on the number and species. The research method used survey methods and data in quantitative analysis, the analysis of the composition of the catch is secondary to the volume of purse seine catches at Tegal Fish Landing throughout September to November 2019. The capture rate was calculated using secondary data on the number of trips and the total production of purse seine at the Tegal Fish Landing from 2014 to 2018. Selectivity of puse seine fishing gear using primary data includes the number and weight of catches, identification of fishing gear, work equpment, safety equipment, supplies, navigation tools, accident history. The dominant variety of catch species was small pelagic fish, namely Decapterus macrosoma, Sardinella lemuru, and Rastrelliger kanagurta. The largest percentage of catches in September was 52% Decapterus macrosoma, 13% Sardinella lemuru, and Rastrelliger kanagurta. The location of the fishing grounds is in the WPP area 712 and 713 the average CPUE purse seine per year at Tegal Fish Landing was 26.710 kg or 26,7 tons per trip for each vessel. This shows that purse seine capture productivity was still quite low when compared to the size of Gross Tonnage. Purse seine gear for five fishing vessels that landed at Tegal Fish Landing selectively. During the study the proportion of the amount and weight of the five vessels was more thant 60%
Application of Good Manufacturing Practices and Sanitation Standard Operating Procedures on Jambal Roti Salted Fish Processing at MSME Mamah Jambal Pangandaran
This research aims to evaluate the application of the GMP and SSOP systems and determine the quality of the jambal roti salted fish produced at Mamah Jambal MSMEs, Pangandaran. The research was conducted from September 2021 to January 2022 using the case study method. The research procedure included observation of processing stages, prerequisite program deviation analysis, and microbiological, chemical, and metal contamination testing. The data obtained was compared and analyzed descriptively, referring to Regulation of the Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries of the Republic of Indonesia No. 17 of 2019 and SNI 8376:2017. The analysis showed that there were 12 minor deviations, 9 major deviations, and 3 serious deviations in the process of processing jambal roti at Mamah Jambal. Based on the number of deviations applying GMP and SSOP, Mamah Jambal has a C predicate. Quality analysis of jambal roti showed that the samples met microbiological and metal contamination standards in SNI 8376:2017. The test did not find any content of Salmonella sp. and Escherichia coli in the sample. The metal contamination test results revealed the content of cadmium (Cd) to be approximately 0.0037 mg/kg, mercury (Hg) 0.2993 mg/kg, and absence of lead (Pb) content. Structure of the Fish Community in the Jatigede Reservoir Post Six Years of Flooding
Jatigede Reservoir began to be inundated in August 2015. The fish caught at the beginning of the 2017 inundation were 9 families consisting of 17 species in 2017. This research aims to determine the structure of the fish community living in the Jatigede Reservoir after six years of inundation. The research was carried out from November 2020 to April 2021 at the Jatigede Reservoir, using the survey method. Primary data which includes the relative abundance of fish, diversity index and fish uniformity. The fish sampling method used a purposive sampling method with 3 repetitions carried out at five stations representing the Jatigede Reservoir area. Data processing using Microsoft Excel to produce fish community structure in Jatigede Reservoir. The fish community structure in Jatigede Reservoir during the research consisted of 9 families, namely cyprinidae, cichlidae, eleotridae, bagridae, loricariidae, pangasiidae, zenarchopteridae, ambassidae and poeciliidae. At stations 2 and 3, it was categorized as stable with a moderate diversity index ranging from 1.08 to 1.73, moderate uniformity ranging from 0.56 to 0.83. At stations 1, 4 and 5 the fish community structure was categorized as unstable, with low diversity ranging from 0.57 to 0.97 and moderate uniformity ranging from 0.51 to 0.60
Suitability of Tourism Zone Based on Oceanographic Characteristics and Coastal Ecosystems in Sendang Biru Waters and Sempu Island, Malang Regency
Sendang Biru Tourism Beach and Sempu Island are tourism zones based on East Java Provincial Regulation No. 1 of 2018, which are part of the Sempu Strait, Malang Regency. Tourism activities depend on the quality of natural resources as the main tourism commodity. Activities that do not match or exceed the area\u27s carrying capacity will also pressure coastal and water resources. This study aimed to determine the suitability of oceanographic and ecosystem characters in tourism zones as parameters for suitability. This study collects secondary and primary data obtained in January 2021, and the method of analysis uses the overlapping technique of physical and biological parameters. The study results show that these waters have a sloping - steep topography with tidal types is mixed tide prevailing semidiurnal, and a current type with a slow - medium category and conditions of temperature, salinity, and pH are still suitable for aquatic ecosystem life. The tourism zone of Sendang Biru Beach and Sempu Island has an oceanographic character that supports coastal tourism activities and ecosystem life, and aquatic biota. However, the existing ecosystem conditions less support coastal tourism activities in these waters. Based on the analysis, it appears that some coastal areas are suitable and very suitable for coastal tourism activities, and the ecotourism concept is recommended for coastal tourism activities
Analysis of Consumer Preferences in Selecting Processed Fish Products (Case Study in Bendungan Hilir Market, Central Jakarta, Indonesia)
At the moment, there has been minimal research on consumer preferences for purchasing processed fish products, with this study aiming to discover how consumer behavior affects the purchasing decision towards processed fish products. The purpose of this study is to examine processed fish products that are popular among Jakarta Indonesia consumers, as well as the factors that influence their purchasing decisions at Bendungan Hilir Market in Central Jakarta. the study used the method of descriptive analysis by observing Packaging color, type of packaging, product color, taste, and price. Validity and reliability tests were performed on the questionnaire. The characteristics of respondents and consumer behavior were analyzed descriptively, while the preferences of processed fish products, such as fish balls, jambal salted fish, shredded fish, fish nuggets, fish cake, and attributes in processed fish products that consumers will consider when purchasing processed fish products, were analyzed using Chi-Square. According to the findings, the processed fish product that became the consumer\u27s favorite at the Bendungan Hilir Market was fish cake. Many of the factors that influenced the purchasing decision included the color of the white packaging, the color of the natural product, and the type of plastic packaging, but the most important factor in selecting products for fish balls, jambal salted fish, shredded fish, fish nuggets, and fish cake was the original taste. Fish balls and fish cake are priced between Rp. 15,000 and Rp. 20,000, while jambal salted fish, shredded fish, and fish nuggets are priced above Rp. 20,000
