The Use of Bread Yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) in Increasing Growth, Disease Resistance, and as Immunostimulating for Various Kinds of Fish: A Review
Apart from providing benefits to bread, Saccharomyces cerevisiae can provide benefits to fish by providing it as a probiotic, and immunostimulant can be used as a feed substitute. Saccharomyces cerevisiae can provide benefits to increase growth and disease resistance in cultivated fish, both consumption fish and ornamental fish. Therefore, this journal review will look at which treatments are suitable for utilizing baker\u27s yeast which will later be given to fish. The materials used to review this journal are related reference sources. The method used in this journal review is a systematic, explicit and reproducible method for evaluating and identifying the results of a study that has been produced by previous researchers and then draws a conclusion from the best treatment. From the review results, the best dosage is to use 5 g/kg of baker\u27s yeast
Bioaccumulation Potential of Seagrass (Halophila sp.) for Mercury in the Selected Coastal Areas in Malita, Davao Occidental
This research aims to determine the potential of seagrass Halophila sp. in absorbing mercury in the selected coastal barangays in Malita, Davao Occidental. The study employs a quantitative type of research where strategies focus on quantifying the collection and analysis of data. The study was conducted from October 2020 to December 2021 in the three selected coastal Barangays in Malita, Davao Occidental namely Brgy.Culaman, Brgy. New Argao and Brgy. Tingolo. Transect line quadrat method was used to determine the percent cover and shoot density of seagrass. Using this method, the point of seagrass occurrence up to the outer limit where seagrasses disappears was determined. There were three (3) stations and three (3) transect lines were laid for each station with an interval of 50m. Five (5) quadrats were also laid in the seagrasses along the 50 meter transect line positioned perpendicular to the shoreline. The seagrasses were collected in each quadrat and the samples were transported to Davao Analytical Laboratories, Inc. for mercury analysis. The highest mean percent cover (10.27%), shoot density (128.91 shoots/m2) and Hg accumulation (572.9ppb) was recorded in Brgy. Tingolo, Malita, Davao Occidental while the lowest result was obtained by Brgy. Culaman, Malita, Davao Occidental. Halophila sp. has the capability to accumulate mercury content and exceeds the standard level of 20 ppb. There were no significant differences in the percent cover and Hg accumulation of seagrass Halophila sp. while significant difference is observed in the shoot density. Tissue Specific Antioxidant Response of Cirrhinus mrigala (Hamilton, 1822) Exposed to Lead Chloride
In the present study, the effect of Lead chloride (PbCl2) on the peroxidase and catalase activity in the tissues (liver, kidney, gills and muscles) of Cirrhinus mrigala was studied. Cirrhinus mrigala were observed at sub-lethal concentrations viz. 1/3rd LC50 and 1/7th LC50 for 28 days. After chronic exposure fishes were dissected and sampling weekly. The activity of peroxidase enzyme was increased significantly (p<0.01) in experimental fish’s organs as compared to control group. Through metal stressed maximum peroxidase activity was found as 0.997±0.011 UmL-1, 0.676±0.016 UmL-1, 0.489±0.005 UmL-1 and 0.339±0.006 UmL-1 in liver, kidney, gills and muscles of fishes exposed to 1/3rd LC50 respectively. The catalase enzyme activity was decreased significantly in experimental fish organs as compared to control group. Minimum catalase enzyme activity was measured as 592.55±3.76 UmL-1, 577.32±8.64 UmL-1, 547.10±12.65 UmL-1 and 488.21± 28.57 UmL-1in the metal stressed liver, gills, kidney and muscles respectively, in fishes exposed to 1/3rd LC50. Abundance, Species Diversity, and Conservation Status of Reef Fishes in Dumanquillas Bay, Zamboanga, Philippines
Zamboanga is one of the significant fishing grounds in the Mindanao Region, but little is known about the conservation status of reef fishes, particularly in Dumanquillas Bay, Zamboanga. Thus, this study assessed the abundance, species diversity, and conservation status of reef fishes in the bay. The assessment was conducted within eight sampling stations from May 6 to May 16, 2014. Reef fishes were censused using a line-intercept method. Fourteen thousand fifty individuals and 140 fish species belonging to 30 families were recorded―dominated by the family Pomacentridae. The number of fish individuals was significantly more abundant in Triton Island Station than in other sampling stations, while Muyong Island has the most diverse reef fishes. Almost all species are classified as the least concern category, except for Plectropomus areolatus of Cabog Island, which is under the vulnerable (VU) category. The number of less-valued species was higher than the commercially high-valued species. Therefore, it may indicate the overharvest of the latter group of species. This comprehensive study on reef fishes in Dumangquillas Bay may serve as a reference for fisheries resource management planning or for drafting fisheries policies in the bay
Effeciency of Procedural Use of Hormonal Agent in Propagation of Clarias gariepinus
Administration procedures of some hormones including single, double and multiple induction protocols were investigated to determine the implications of different induction process in propagation of Clarias gariepinus. The hormones studied were ovulin, Carp pituitary extract (CPE) and gonopore. A total of 36 Clarias gariepinus of the same age comprising 27 females and 9 males were used for the study. Eggs produced among treatments were fertilized with pooled sperm from a total of 3 males per hormonal treatment. Propagation was assessed by fecundity, fertilization, hatchability and larval survival. Highest egg production was recorded at double inductions with ovulin and CPE while highest egg production was observed in single induction with gonopore. There was significant disparity (P<0.05) in fertilization and hatchability percentages. Best fertilization and hatching rate was recorded with ovulin at single induction (80.2%) and ovulin at multiple inductions (81.9%) respectively. There was significant difference (P<0.05) in number of larvae realized among the treatments. Highest larval survival was recorded with gonopore at single induction (68.1%). Findings from the study showed that hormone type and mode of administration are important in propagation of C. gariepinus. The study recommended double inductions in usage of Ovulin and CPE and single induction with gonopore. Adopting best procedural technology in usage of specific hormone is necessary for mass production of Clarias gariepinus seeds
Analysis of the Decision-making Process for Purchasing of Ornamental Fish at the Bogor Ornamental Fish Marketing Depot
Ornamental fish as a commodity of high economic value and has its own charm, makes consumers have a variety of goals and needs in purchasing ornamental fish. This study aims to analyze consumer characteristics and describe the consumer decision-making process at the Bogor Ornamental Fish Marketing Depot. The method used is survey method and sampling technique using accidental sampling. The source of data using primary and secondary data with 75 respondents. The research result showed that characteristics of the respondents who visited the most were male, age ranged from 20-25 years, undergraduate education level, type of work as a private employee, and income level of Rp 1,000,000. The results of the analysis of the purchasing decision process show that most of the consumers\u27 motivation in buying ornamental fish as decoration, the respondent\u27s information search comes from friends and the surrounding environment. Evaluation of alternative respondents chose the reason for buying ornamental fish because the price of ornamental fish was affordable. Purchase decisions are made unplanned, while the frequency of visits by respondents is usually uncertain and the time of visit is at the end of the month. Post-purchase behavior, respondents feel that the Bogor Ornamental Fish Marketing Depot is a clean and comfortable place, respondents are also satisfied with buying ornamental fish
Fish Consumption Behavior during COVID-19 Pandemic in Bekasi City (Case Study in Pondok Ungu Permai)
The spread of the Coronavirus outbreak has in changes in people’s consumption patterns, including the consumption of fish products. The purpose of this study was to analyze changes in fish consumption behavior, whats factors changes preference in fish consumption during the COVID-19 pandemic, and to analyze the understanding of the benefits of fish from consumers in the Pondok Ungu Permai. The method used is a case study with qualitative, quantitative, and descriptive data analysis. The sampling technique used and simple random sampling method with 82 respondents. The result showed changes in factors during the COVID-19 pandemic are the system and places of purchase, the frequency of fish consumption, the amount of consumption of fish products consumed, and the price of fish. Based on binary logistic regression analysis, before and after the COVID-19 pandemic, the Wald test showed that occupation had an influence on preferences between fresh fish and processed fish
Covid-19 Impacts on the Fish Production and Distribution Status at the Nusantara Fishery Port, West Java, Indonesia
This study aims to analyze the impact of Covid-19 on the operational conditions of production and distribution at the Palabuhanratu Nusantara Fisheries Port (NFP) before and after the Covid-19 pandemic. Data was collected from May 2021 to July 2022 through interviewing 7 port officers and 25 fishermen based on certain criteria and direct observations in the field. The results shows that the amount of fish production and fish catch per fishing gear decreased significantly in the peak of the pandemic. During the peak of the pandemic (2020), fish catch per fishing gear decreased from gillnet, tuna Long line, toddler fishing, tramel net, hand fishing and purse sein. The distribution of fresh fish at the peak of the pandemic has increased, while the distribution of pindang fish and salted fish has decreased. This happens because fish production at the peak of the pandemic (2020) has decreased, therefore fish in ports do not experience over stock so for Pindang and salted fish is reduced. The highest income for payang and fishing rods was Rp. 650,000 before the pandemic and after the pandemic: the lowest income was Rp. 350,000 for net fishermen. Based on the results of interviews, most fishermen stated that the average household expenditure before and after the pandemic did not change much
Characterization and Isolation of Bacteria from Adult African Catfish (Clarias gariepinus) in Selected Fish Farms of Rivers State, Nigeria
This research examined the bacterial loads in the intestine, skin and gills of cultured Clarias gariepinus in some selected private farms at Eleme, Emohua, Ikwerre, Obio/Akpor and Port Harcourt Local Government Areas of Rivers State, Nigeria. Determination of bacterial loads species characterization in fish parts was done using standard microbiological procedures. Results of the assay showed high bacterial count in the gill, gut and skin of fish from the different locations, especially at Emuoha Local Government Area. The total heterotrophic bacteria counts of fish: gills ranged between 1.7X108 and 3.1 X 107; gut ranged between 1.4 X 107 and 7.2 X 106 and skin ranged between 1.5 X 106 and 6.8 X 106 in all the stations under consideration (Eleme, Emohua, Ikwerre, Obio/Akpor and Port Harcourt city Local Government Areas of Rivers State, Nigeria.). Composition of Flavour Non Volatile Compound Steamed Snakehead Fish (Channa striata)
This research aims to identify the composition of non-volatile flavor compounds contained in steamed snakehead fish (Channa striata). This research was conducted at the Fishery Product Processing Laboratory, Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, Padjadjaran University, Jatinangor; Integrated Laboratory of IPB. The study was conducted experimentally by treating samples of fresh snakehead fish and steamed snakehead fish (at a temperature of 100oC for ± 30 minutes). A simple product description test was carried out on samples which included appearance, meat, aroma, texture, and taste. Identification of non-volatile flavor compounds using High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). The results showed that the product description test of steamed snakehead fish has an external appearance that is almost the same as fresh snakehead fish, the skin peels easily and the eyes of the fish are cooked. The texture of the meat is easy to tear. The distinctive aroma of a specific type of snakehead fish. Steamed snakehead fish has a distinctive taste mixed with the sensation of mud. The non-volatile flavor compounds identified as many as 15 amino acid compounds in the steamed snakehead fish sample. The two umami amino acids are 3,40% glutamic acid and 2,23% aspartic acid. The four sweet amino acids are alanine 1,28%, threonine 1,00%, glycine 0,94% and serine 0,84%. Nine bitter amino acids are lysine 2,12%, leucine 1,76%, arginine 1,37%, valine 1,08%, isoleucine 1,08%, phenylalanine 0,95%, tyrosine 0,76%, methionine 0,66% and histidine 0,55%
