    Enhancement of Color Brightness on Clown Fish (Amphiprion percula) With Addition of Tomato Powder Extract

    The prospect of clown fish cultivation business is still being expanded to make profitable business activities and increasingly attract ornamental fish lovers. However, it is difficult to get clown fish with a good level of color brightness. So it can reduce the level of sales production. This study aims to determine the effect of the addition of tomato powder to increase the brightness of the color clown fish at the Ambon Marine Aquaculture Fisheries Center. The research was conducted from March to June 2020 at the Ambon Marine Aquaculture Fisheries Center. This study used a Completely Randomized Design (RAL) with 4 treatments and 3 replications. The treatment is to mix tomato powder in the feed with a concentration of 0 mg/gr (Treatment A), concentration 20 mg/gr (Treatment B), concentration 40 mg/gr (Treatment C), and concentration 60 mg/gr (Treatment D). The fish used is a clown fish with a size of 1 cm with a spread of 4 fish with a circulatory maintenance system. The observed parameters include the brightness of the clown fish color, which is measured using the color grab camera app, the growth of which is the average length and weight of average seeds measured using a ruler with a precision rate of 1 cm and a digital scale with a precision rate of 0.01gr and survival rate. The results showed that feeding with the addition of powdered tomato did not give a significant effect to increase the brightness of the color of the clown fish. However, it affects the growth (length and weight) and survival rate of clownfish seeds

    Response of Juvenile Clarias gariepinus to Varying Dietary Levels of Ionotropic Gelated Chitosan Nanoparticles Synthesized from Wasted Crab Shells

    Background: Crab shells lie wasted globally after the extraction of the edible soft tissues. Chitosan nanoparticles (CNPs) derived from these shells have the potentials to revolutionized aquaculture. Aims: Evaluated the effects of CNPs on water quality parameters, growth performance, feed utilization and survival rate of African catfish (Clarias gariepinus). Study Design:  The experimental diets were incorporated with chitosan nanoparticles at the rate of 0, 2.5 5.0 and 7.5 g kg-1 representing Treatments CNP00, CNP2.5, CNP5.0 and CNP7.5 respectively and replicated thrice. Place and Duration of Study: Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Environmental Management, University of Uyo, Uyo – Nigeria from August to November 2021. Methodology: We synthesized CNPs by ionic gelation method. Dried flour of FM, SBM, Wheat bran and yellow maize meal were analyzed for proximate composition used in the formulation of experimental diets. These were milled at 2 mm pellets, CNPs were dissolved in 0.3 liters of water and sprayed on the pellets. These were stored at 10% moisture content, in black polythene bags. Diets were fed to two hundred and sixteen fingerlings of African catfish (C. gariepinus) with mean body weight 23.86±3.11. Growth performance, feed utilization and survival rate parameters were calculated and statistically compared. Results: Ammonia was significantly (p<0.05) low in CNP7.5. The highest daily weight gain (6.98±0.81 g) was recorded in CNP7.5 while the lowest (1.02±0.01 g) was recorded in the control (CNP00). SGR, DWG, FCR, PER followed the same pattern. However, there was no difference in percentage survival rate. Conclusion: Chitosan nanoparticles supplemented at the rate of 7.5 g k-1 diet can give a better water quality, growth performance and feed utilization of C. gariepinus juvenile. Incorporation of CNPs in diet of C. gariepinus at a concentration of 7.5 g kg-1 is recommended for more profitable and sustainable culture of this fish species

    Recent Trends on Tilapia Cultivation and Its Major Socioeconomic Impact among Some Developing Nations: A Review

    Tilapia cultivation has been found to be an effective tool for many developing countries for socio-economic development by addressing some important issues like food-security and employment generation. Adoption of tilapia cultivation has increased over the decades because of easy management practice and versatile farming technologies have been observed worldwide. Tilapia gain popularity because of their excellent breeding capabilities, flesh quality, high growth rate, disease resistance and survival capabilities under different farming systems and environmental conditions. Such features boosting up rapid growth of tilapia producing industries in an impactful way, by involving poor and non-poor farming communities in some of the developing countries of Asian, African and South American continents. However, some problems still exists with cultivation of different tilapia varieties; such as the inadequate availability of quality fry, deterioration in seed quality, limited technical knowledge among farming communities and poor marketing strategies especially in some of these developing countries depriving its commercial success to some extent. This review describes a present scenario regarding potentialities and difficulties of commercial adaptation of Tilapia cultivation under socio-economically constrained conditions.&nbsp

    Tree Species Diversity in a Semi-Conserved Beach Forest in Southern Philippines

    Beach forest is a unique type of ecosystem, a mixed group of littoral creepers, shrubs, and trees above the high tide level. In Sarangani Province, beach forest is not well studied even though it experienced various environmental threats due to the increase of coastal development and tourism. This study aimed to determine the composition and diversity of beach forest species in Barangay Kling, Kiamba, Sarangani Province and relate it to the whole coastal area of the municipality by producing a profile. Specifically, the study sought to determine the species composition of beach forest in the sampling areas; assess the beach forest diversity of at least three sampling areas in Barangay Kling. Using transect-quadrat method, species were identified through identification guides. Data analysis includes relative density, relative frequency, relative dominance, species diversity index and species importance value. Results of the assessment of species composition and community structure showed that a total of 39 beach forest species distributed among 23 families are present on the site, and another ten (10) species were observed outside of the transects. Milletia pinnata has the highest importance value with a rating of 79.04, followed by Terminalia catappa (65.54) and Barringtonia asiatica (44.04). The results show that the area has a huge potential for development into a beach forest park considering the diversity and maturity of the stand. In addition, management, protection, and rehabilitation of beach forest are also highly recommended to maximize their potential as climate change mitigators and their role in coastal protection

    Insight into the Utilization of the Blue Sources of Funds in Fisheries Investment as a Key Sector in Blue Economy in Zanzibar

    The study examined the insight into utilization of the blue sources of funds for fishery investment in Zanzibar. The study intended to help the blue economy plans in showing the importance of financing fishing sector in order to empower those who are engaged. Using questionnaire and interview collected the primary data. The study applied both (quantitative and qualitative) analyses. Quantitative method was in the form of descriptive statistics using frequency distribution while the qualitative method was in the form of content analysis. The findings of the study showed that funds were utilized in purchasing boats, equipment’s and machines. The results showed that self-finance and retained earnings were used mostly to purchase machines. However government grants were used to purchase boats while loans were used to purchase equipment’s. This implies that most of the fisher folks are very poor to finance themselves to purchase boats explaining why they use government grants to purchase boats. Therefore, the owners of the boats and fisher folks should ensure the effective utilization of funds obtained from different sources for fisheries activities in order to generate higher return on fisheries investments

    Mangrove-epiphytic Plants in Selected Mangrove Rehabilitation Areas of Davao Occidental, The Philippines

    The study was conducted in the mangrove rehabilitation sites of Malita, Davao Occidental, Philippines particularly Sitio Agdao of Brgy. Tubalan, Sitio Baybay of Brgy. Buhangin and Sitio Lahusan of Brgy. Fishing Village from October to December 2020. Preliminary stations were established: Station 1 in Sitio Agdao, Station 2 in Sitio Baybay and the Station 3 in Sitio Lahusan. These sites are considered to be a slightly undisturbed mangrove forest dominated by species of mangrove trees. The free exploration method was carried out first before the conduct of the study. Samples consisted of host plants and their associates (epiphytes) are collected for proper identification. Three study areas were assessed by the number of individual species to calculate their relative abundance and density. A total of 7 species identified individually among of the three-study areas. The study also shows that species of mangrove epiphytes in the study area composed of 3 to 5 species per station and exhibit 1 to 3 identified species per plot and individual species per station revealed that Davalia denticulata and Aglaomorpha quercifold were the most common species of mangrove epiphytic plants in almost all three study areas. However, Lahusan sampling station occurred numerous quantities of Mangrove epiphytic plants species among 3 identified study areas including Imprerata cycindrica that cannot be found in Agdao and Baybay Stations. Statistically, no significant difference was observed among study areas

    Status of Capture Fisheries and Socio-Economic Analysis in Jatigede Reservoir, Sumedang Regency

    The Jatigede Reservoir is the second largest reservoir in West Java after the Jatiluhur reservoir, which is located in Sumedang Regency, West Java. The purpose of the study was to analyze the socio-economic conditions and the value of the benefits of capture fisheries in Jatigede Reservoir, Sumedang Regency. This research was conducted by used data collection method (observation, questioner, literature study) and method of data analysis (feasibility business analysis). The data used are primary and secondary data. Primary data with judgment sampling 25 respondents. The results of the are income analysis (Total Revenue/TR), Break Even Point (BEP) analysis, Benefit Cost Ratio (BCR), and Payback Period. The results of the analysis of the feasibility of catching fish using several fishing tools are the Gill Net Profit Value Rp.72,150,000, Throwing Net (kecrik) Rp.343,450,000 and Bagan Rp.26,750,000. Break Event Point (BEP) production Gill net 2,573 kg, Throw net (kecrik) 1,816 kg, Bagan 1,290 kg in 1 year and Break Event Point (BEP) price for Gill net Rp. 5,437/kg, Throw Net (kecrik) Rp.6.810/kg and Bagan Rp.6.450/kg in 1 year. Benefit Cost Ratio (BCR) Gill net 2.75, Throw Net (kecrik) 2.20 and Bagan 2.32, Payback Period (PP) Gill net for 7 months, Throw net (kecrik) for 5 months, while Bagan for 4 months. This fishing activity has a positive value, meaning that the fishing effort in Jatigede Reservoir uses Gillnet, Throwing Net, Bagan and this is profitable and feasible to carry out

    Effect of Use of Different Light Spectrum on Growth Performance and Color Brightness Level of Tiger Barb (Puntius tetrazona)

    This study aims to evaluate the effect of light spectrum on growth performance and brightness level of tiger barb (Puntius tetrazona). The research was conducted in January – March 2022 at the Laboratory of Aquatic Animal Physiology, Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, Padjadjaran University. This study used an experimental method of Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with five treatments and three replications. The treatment consisted of five treatments, namely control (without LED lights), white LED lights (B), red (C), green (D) and blue (E) lights with 12 hours of irradiation. The treatment was given for 60 days. Parameters observed included growth in length and absolute weight, color brightness level, survival rate and water quality (temperature, pH and DO). The results of the study for 60 days of maintenance showed that the best growth parameter was the red LED light treatment with an absolute length growth of 0.57 cm and an absolute weight growth of 0.49 g. The best color quality parameter for tiger barb (Puntius tetrazona) was obtained in the red LED light treatment with an increase in the color score in the Toca color finder (TCF) reaching 1.7 on the body; 2,3 on the pectoral fins; and 2.4 on the tail. The water quality parameter values are in normal conditions (temperature ranges from 27.3-27.9 ◦C; DO ranges from 4.2-5 mg/l; and pH ranges from 6.97-7.65;) so that it is good for the survival rate of tiger barb, namely 100%

    The Effect of Heating Duration on the Preference Level of Pindang Presto Indian Mackerel

    Indian Mackerel is one of the potential small pelagic fish and has a dense meat quality so that it can be made as a pindang product. Presto roasting is one of the processing performances resulting from the modification by applying high-temperature heating with a pressurized device whose process can reduce or eliminate fishy smell by maintaining the nutritional content and melting fish bones so that they can be consumed without causing pain, the length of the heating process can reduce quality disturbances. Organoleptic characteristics of the product affect consumer acceptance. This study aims to determine the effect of heating time on the nutritional content of pressure cookers and consumer power. This research was carried out from January 2022 to March 2022 and took place at the Laboratory of Fishery Products Processing, Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, Padjadjaran University, and the Laboratory of the Faculty of Food Technology, Pasundan University. The method used is a non-parametric statistical method that consists of 3 treatments, namely the experimental heating time of 60 minutes, 90 minutes, and 120 minutes with 20 panelists with an average of 20 years old. The tests consisted of Friedman\u27s test and Bayes\u27 test which were discussed descriptively and proximate and calcium tests were carried out for the best treatment. The results showed that the most preferred Indian Mackerel pindang presto was an overall aromatic, texture, and taste, with 120 minutes of heating time. Organoleptic characteristics of Indian Mackerel with a heating time of 120 minutes have an effect on the appearance of brown fish meat, the scent of fish is not fishy, ​​the texture of the meat becomes softer and the spines and bones of the fish become soft so it can be consumed, and the taste is more savory. The research has succeeded in getting the best heating time, which is 120 minutes, which is the most preferred treatment by the panelists

    The Water Hyacinth Reduces the Production Costs of Fish Feed during the Small-scale Tilapia Culture in Southern of Sinaloa, Mexico

    Tilapia culture is increasing such in Mexico as in other countries of world; however, one of main problem is the food cost; therefore, the aim this work was to use water hyacinth as a complement in tilapia feeding, and thus reduce production cost. Dried water hyacinth added with cane molasses, was fermented using Lactobacillus acidophilus. The fermented product was mixed with commercial feed and cornmeal, at 30-60-10 percent respectively. The mixture was extruded and dried to be used as tilapia feed. Tilapia juveniles were placed in plastic ponds; once tilapias reached 24-26 g, were divided in two groups; The experimental group was transferred to a 4,678-liter pond while the control group was distributed in three 100-liter ponds. The experimental group was fed with food prepared with water hyacinth, while control group with commercial food. To know the tilapias growth of each groups, the weight gain of both groups, was recorded every 2 weeks; also to check the water state, its physicochemical parameters were recorded. At end of 9 biweeklies, the experiment was stopped, and the tilapia growth of both groups compared, using a von Bertalanffy modified equation to calculate the growth, based on the weight increase. Results indicated that tilapia growth rate fed with water hyacinth-supplemented feed, was 7.5% higher than tilapia fed with commercial feed, at p=0.05. Another important point, is that feed cost prepared with water hyacinth was 30% lower than commercial food. This results demonstrate that tilapia farming to small and medium-scale, can be developed in southern Sinaloa, which will create jobs for inhabitants of small communities, strengthening the family economy and the social fabric
