Effectiveness of Natural Preservative Ingredients Garlic Extract (Allium sativum) on the Shelf Life of Fresh Vannamei Shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei)
This research aims to determine the best concentration of garlic extract that can be used so that the shelf life of vannamei shrimp can last longer. This research was conducted in May - August 2022 at the Fisheries Product Processing Laboratory, Padjadjaran University. This research used an experimental method with 4 tratments concentration of garlic: 0%, 5%, 10% dan 15%. The parameters observed in this research included the phytochemical test of garlic extract, the Total Plate Count (TPC) test, the scoring test and the degree of acidity (pH) test. Statistical of the data obtained from the results of the phytochemical test, Total Plate Count (TPC) and degree of acidity (pH) were analyzed descriptively comparatively while the scoring test was analyzed non-parametrically using Friedman\u27s two-way analysis of variance with the Chi-square test. The results showed that the use of garlic extract with a concentration of 10% on vannamei shrimp during cold storage (0 - 4oC) had the longest shelf life of up to 5 days with a total bacterial count of around 4.9 x 105 CFU/g, a pH value of 7 with the appearance starts to change color, the smell is neutral but starts to smell a little ammonia and the texture is less elastic but still compact and solid
Survey on the Effects of Internet Technology in the Marketing Development of Betta Fish (Betta splendens Regan 1910) in the Muara Fish Market, Bandung City
This fisheries sector can be used as a mainstay in overcoming the existing economic crisis. Aquaculture is part of fisheries and has quite potential in Bandung, especially ornamental fish cultivation. Ornamental fish in Indonesia has different types and commodities and also has high economic value in the fisheries sector. This is due to the increase in ornamental fish enthusiasts, both domestic and foreign has increased a bit, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Ornamental fish commodities from Indonesia have been able to compete to enter various existing markets. One of the ornamental fish favored by the public is the ornamental betta fish (Betta splendens). However, many traders are still confused about how to market their ornamental betta fish products, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. The use of social media can be used as a marketing communication tool so that consumer awareness of ornamental fish can increase in both improving product image and ending in increasing of sales in ornamental fish
Caudal Skeleton Variations in Alburnoides Fish Species from Iranian Water Basins
The species in the genus Alburnoides is distinguished based on having a combination of some morphological characteristics and different fin ray counts. Most descriptions are based on morphological characteristics and molecular approaches. The species are widely distributed in the Iranian basins. Since osteological structures of fishes provide major biological and ecological information, studying these structures is valuable. The present study was conducted to provide a caudal skeleton variations in Alburnoides fish species from Iran for the first time. For this purpose, three specimens of Alburnoides species were collected from different basins using the gill net (1mm) and electrofishing device and fixed in 10% buffered formalin. Then, the specimens were cleared and stained with alcian blue and alizarin red for osteological examination. Based on the results, several differences were observed among the species. The caudal shape comparison of Alburnoides species from the Inland water of Iran revealed some differences among them including the shape of the epural and rudimentary neural arch. However, ten species of Alburnoides, from Iran were not distinguishable based on these osteological characteristics
Effects of Replacing Soybean Meal with Fermented Bambara Groundnut Meal (Vigna subterranea) Meal in the Diet of Clarias gariepinus Fingerlings
Background: Efforts to reduce fish feed cost have been geared towards fishmeal replacement with cheap ingredients. However, the price of soybean which is a supplementary protein source in fish diet is also soaring due to impact of covid-19 pandemic couple with competition by man and livestock; this therefore calls for a search for its alternatives. Bambara groundnut (BG), although highly nutritious and climate resistant crop, is described as a neglected and under-utilized crop in most countries of Africa.
Aims: To ascertain the effect of replacing soybean meal with Fermented Bambara Groundnut Meal (FBGM) on the growth performance and feed utilization of C. gariepinus.
Study Design: Completely Randomized Design (CRD) was used with five treatments and three replicates. Diet FBGM00 with no FBGM was used as control. Various replacement levels were designation as FBGM25, FBGM50, FBGM75 and FBMG100 for 25, 50, 75 and 100% respectively.
Place and Duration of Study: Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Management, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike; Central Labouratory, University of Uyo, Nigeria, between May 2021 and August 2021.
Methodology: We fermented Vigna subterranea for 72 hours, air-dried, weighed and oven dried at 60˚C for 24 hours, followed by cooling. Dried flour of FBGM and other ingredients were analyzed for proximate composition used in the formulation of experimental diets. These were milled at 2 mm pellets, sundried and stored at 10 per cent moisture content, in black polythene bags. Diets were fed to one hundred and fifty (150) fingerlings of catfish (C. gariepinus) with mean weight 50±2.35 for 84 days. Growth performance, feed utilization and survival rate parameters were calculated and statistically compared.
Results: Physico-chemical parameters fluctuated slightly but were within the optimum range. The highest daily weight gain (85.29±14.46 g) was recorded in FBGM75 while the lowest (68.29±8.49 and 69.86±8.73 g) were recorded in the control diet (FBGM00) and FBGM25 respectively. The specific growth rate, daily weight gain, feed conversion ratio, protein efficiency ratio and percentage survival rate also followed the same pattern. However, no significant differences (P>.05) were detected in all these parameters.
Conclusion: Fermented Bambara Groundnut Meal can totally replace soybean meal in the diet of C. gariepinus, without adversely affecting growth performance, feed utilization and survival rate. However, the optimum replacement level lies in FBGN75. More researches are needed on the adults or grow out stages to unveil its effects on the grow out stage and brooder and different processing methods employed and compared to the best processing method that will be mild enough to increase the nutrient content while removing the phytochemicals
Water Quality of a Tectonic Lake: Hazar Lake
In this study, water quality parameters of Hazar Lake have been investigated and evaluated according to water quality regulations. Some water quality parameters, such as dissolved oxygen, water temperature pH, electrical conductivity salinity, transparency, (Sechii disc depth), Chlorophyll a, total alkalinity, BOD, chloride, calcium, magnesium, total phosphorus, sulfate, ammonium nitrogen, nitrite nitrogene, nitrate nitrogene, total nitrogen were examined between September 2019-August 2020. The results were evaluated according to the quality criteria of the In-Continental Water Resources Classes of The Water Pollution and Control Regulation. According to the regulation, the water quality of Hazar Lake is classified as the 1st class in terms of dissolved oxygen, water temperature, ammonium nitrogen, total phosphorus, nitrate-nitrogen, nitrate nitrogen, biological oxygen demand; as the 3rd class in terms of chloride ion; as 4th class in terms of pH. The average chlorophyll a value of 1.09 µg/L in Lake Hazar indicates that the lake shows oligotrophic lake category feature. Secchi disc depth was 3.8 m), which shows that Hazar Lake is at the oligotrophic level in terms of light transmittance. It is noticed that for total phosphorus less than 10 µg/L, the lake is oligotrophic, for 10-20 µg/L is called mesotrophic, and for more than 20 µg/L is so-called eutrophic. This value was measured 0.02 µg/L in the lake; therefore, it can be concluded that the lake is oligotrophic. In addition, the change in alkalinity values of the lake between 402-450 mg CaCO3/L indicates that the lake has very hard water characteristics. Precautions should be taken to protect ecological balances and prevent water pollution in Hazar Lake
Shelf Life of Combination Nori Sargassum sp. and Eucheuma spinosum with Alumunium Foil Packaging Based on the Accelerated Shelf Life Test Method
The purpose of this research was to determine the shelf life of Combination Nori Sargassum sp. and Eucheuma spinosum with the Accelerated Shelf Life Test (ASLT) method Arrhenius Model using Alumunium Foil packaging. This research was conducted at the Laboratory of Fisheries Product Processing, Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, Padjadjaran University from October to November 2020. Sargassum sp. is a genus of brown algae (Phaeophyta) used as in the food industry and non-food industry. Sargassum sp. cannot form nori sushi sheets because it lack carageenan. Eucheuma spinosum is a genus of red algae (Rhodophyta) used to complement the lack of carageenan in Sargassum sp. Alumunium foil is a metalized plastic package composed of hermetic, flexible and opaque metal that has high protection againts light, water vapor and gas. The determination of the shelf life of the ASLT method is carried out using parameters of environmental conditions that can accelerate the product quality degradation by storing the product at high risk temperature. The observation used in determining the shelf life of Combination Nori Sargassum sp. and Eucheuma spinosum is a sensory test and water content test with 35 days in the storage at a temperature of 25oC and 35oC. The calculation results of the Arrhenius model used texture parameter as critical parameters that had the lowest Activation energy (Ea) in determining the shelf life of combination nori which packaged with alumunium foil. The results showed the value of texture parameters based on the order 0 reaction with the Arrhenius plot Ln K = -2.8019, 1/T = 97.596 and Ea = 193.92. The shelf life of combination nori Sargassum sp. and Eucheuma spinosum that stored at room temperature (25oC) was around 137 days
Efficacy of Terminalia catappa Leaf as an Alternative to Synthetic Antibiotics in the Diet of Oreochromis niloticus Challenged with Salmonella typhi
Terminalia catappa leaf meal was incorporated into 30% crude protein basal diets of Oreochromis niloticus at different inclusion levels of 0 (control), 25, 50, 75 and 100% to supplement yellow maize and diets were designated as TCD1, TCD2, TCD3, TCD4 and TCD5 respectively. Fish (10.38 ± 0.35) g were fed at 4% body weight for 70 days and later immersed in water with 2 ml / l of pathogenic strain of Salmonella typhi for 10 days. At the expiration of the feeding trials, growth performance indices of O. niloticus were significantly different (P< 0.05), with fish fed T. catappa having higher weight gain, specific growth rate and better feed conversion ratio. Crude protein of whole fish body was higher in fish fed T. catappa leaf supplemented diets. Challenge test with pathogenic strain of S. typhi, indicated that survival of O. niloticus can be improved by 50% when T. catappa is incorporated into fish diets. Therefore, incorporating T. catappa into the diets of O. niloticus between 25 – 100% from this study is sufficient to boost growth and improve survival against S. typhi. 
Propagation, Growth and Haematology of Fish Cultured in Water from a Natural Stream and Underground Tubewell Sources
Propagation, growth and haematology of Clarias gariepinus bred and reared in water from a natural stream at 5o28’N, 7o32’E (Nature stream) and two wells at 5.4810N, 7.5370E (well-1) and 5.4770N, 7.5390E (well-2) were studied. The study was carried out in search of suitable water within close proximity for fish propagation. Growth was evaluated once in two weeks. Haematological parameters of the fingerlings were examined at 70 day post hatch. There was significant difference (P<0.05) in egg fertilization, hatchability, larval survival, growth and blood parameters among the treatments. Fish exposed to water from the natural stream impacted best propagation indices including fastest growth and highest values of Packed Cell Volume (PCV) and Mean Corpuscular Haemoglobin Concentration (MCHC). Fish for well-1 and well-2 were not statistically different (P>0.05) in PCV and MCHC. Apart from these two parameters, values of all the other blood parameters including growth were significantly lower (P<0.05) in fish for well-2 than those for well-1. The disparities observed signifies differences in water quality which is indicative for the presence of contaminant not identified in this study. The report recommended inclusion of heavy metals and organic mineral analysis in future study to identify the cause of the observed alterations
Evaluation of Heavy Metals Concentration in Selected Seafood in Ogoni Land
Periwinkle, clam, mudskipper, shrimp and catfish are favoured seafood in Ogoni Land. The quantitative estimation of heavy metals in these favoured seafood from Kaa and Kono Rivers have not really been established. This study was undertaken to evaluate the concentration of chromium, iron, lead and cadmium in the aforementioned seafood. Fresh, clean samples of periwinkle, clam, mudskipper, shrimp and catfish were collected from fishermen at landing beaches of Kaa and Kono Rivers. These samples were transported to the chemistry laboratory of Kenule Beeson Saro-Wiwa Polytechnic where digestion was done. Quantitative estimation of heavy metals was done using atomic absorption spectrophotometer at corporate analytical service limited. Analysis showed that all heavy metals in periwinkle are greater than normal guidelines, with the exception of Fe from both rivers and Cr from Kaa. Cr is higher than the normal standards for clam in both rivers, but all others were lower. Except for Fe, all heavy metals in mudskipper exceed acceptable limits for both rivers. For shrimp, Cr and Pb levels are greater than recommended in both rivers, whereas Fe and Cd levels are lower. Cr was not detected in catfish, however Pb and Cd levels are greater than recommended for both rivers, whereas Fe levels are lower. According to a one-time evaluation, periwinkle, clam, mudskipper, shrimp and catfish from Kaa and Kono Rivers have heavy metal concentrations higher than recommended levels for safety. To minimize heavy metal bioaccumulation, these samples should not be consumed for long periods of time. Serial analysis over a long period of time should be carried out in order to provide a more definitive statement concerning the consumption of these seafood
Analysis of the Role of Fisheries Sector in Regional Development of Garut Regency of West Java
This study aims to analyze the contribution of the fisheries sector to the Gross Regional Domestic Product (GDP), to analyze the extent to which market demand is related to the fishery sector\u27s products, and to analyze the strength of the base and non-base sectors of the fisheries sector in the region. Development in Garut Regency. The method used in this study is a quantitative descriptive method using secondary time series data, which is then analyzed using descriptive statistics, and a qualitative method using primary data obtained through direct interviews with parties involved in the fisheries sector. This research consists of two types of data: primary and secondary data. The data were analyzed by Shift share analysis, location quotient (LQ) analysis, Localization index (LI) analysis, and specialization index (SI). Calculation of the economic growth rate in the region using LQ, LI, and SI (the LQ average is 1,91 (>1) which means that the Garut Regency fishery sector is an economic base sector that can meet the needs of fishery products in its area and has the potential to carry out export activities the LI average is 0,00 meaning that the fishery sector is dispersed in West Java Province and has not become the focus of excellence in Garut Regency. and the SI average is 0,00 indicates that the fisheries sector is essential but not specialized in the economic sector in Garut Regency. The result of the shift-share analysis suggests that the fisheries sector is a progressive sector but uncompetitive
