Salinity Tolerance of Dormitator lebretonis (Pisces: Eleotridae: Steindachner, 1870) Reared in Water Tanks: Implications for Coastal Wetlands and Swamp Valorizations
Dormitator lebretonis (Eleotridae: Steindachner, 1870) is a fish species that inhabits West African coastal environments from Senegal to Angola where this squeaker appears to be an important component of the artisanal fisheries. In particular, this eleotrid is widespread in Benin coastal waters including wetlands, and is intensively exploited for food. The current rearing experiment aimed to determine the salinity levels that favor the survival and growth factors of this squeaker. Six (6) treatments corresponding to six (6) salinity levels (0‰, 5‰, 10‰, 15‰, 20‰, 25‰) and three replicates with 15 individuals of D. lebretonis per replicate were considered for the experiment. Appropriate salinity levels were obtained from a mixture of sea water and fresh water. Overall, within each six (6) treatments, physicochemical features showed insignificant (P>0.05) variations. Regardless of rearing water salinity (0‰ - 25‰), D. lebretonis displayed high survivals ranging between 86.66% (salinity: 0‰) and 100% (salinity: 5‰ - 20‰). Percent weight gained (PWG: 7.94±0.01% - 14.39±0.02%) were moderate and significantly (P<0.05) varied with treatments. Also, significant (P<0.05) variations in the condition factors (K) were recorded, with means ranging between 1.68±0.04 and 1.92±0.01. Nevertheless, specific growth rates (SGR) did not show any significant (F5,18=0.328; P=0.890) variations across treatments. These findings could serve as reference data for an extensive aquacultural valorization of D. lebretonis in numerous Benin coastal wetlands and swamps
The Strategy of Phytoplankton Administration in Larval Rearing to Improve the Survival Rate of White Shrimp (Penaeus vannamei) Larvae of F1 and Free-Pathogen
Aims: The white shrimp (Penaeus vannamei) larvae F1 is the dream of shrimp cultivators to be cultivated in ponds. This is because F1 larvae have fast growth, especially if the larvae have disease-free certification (specific pathogen-free, SPF). The purpose of this scientific paper is to evaluate strategies for feeding phytoplankton in larval rearing to increase the survival rate of shrimp larvae F1 of white shrimp.
Place and Duration of Study: This research activity was carried out from November to December 2021 at the Shrimp Hatchery Laboratory, Department of Aquaculture Technology, Pankep State Polytechnic Agriculture.
Methodology: The nauplii were obtained from the shrimp hatchery industry and then stocked in 2 units of tanks measuring 4m x 4m x 1.5m. Before stocking, the larvae were acclimatized to temperature (28°C) and salinity (30 ppt). The larvae were fed live feed (Skeletonema costatum) from the stage of Nauplii-6 to Mysis-2. In addition, the larvae were also fed artificial feeds and Artemia nauplii. Observation of larval development was carried out at each stage using a microscope (40x), and observations of the population number of each stage were carried out volumetrically. Parasite analysis of each stage was conducted in the Makassar Fish Quarantine.
Results: The results showed that during the stage shift from Nauplius-6 to Zoea-1, the larvae succeeded in passing the zoea syndrome (empty intestine). The population decline was only reduced by 2% (from 1,200,000 individuals decreased to 1,175,600 individuals). The final population (PL10) was 1,084,000 (SR 90%). The parasite analyses results showed that the larvae were free from any disease. Administration of phytoplankton (S. costatum ) at the early stage (Nauplius-6) at a dose of 60 x 106 cells/ml has succeeded in reducing the mortality rate (2%) in the critical stage (zoea syndrome) of F1 white shrimp larvae
Assesing the Community Structure of Macrozoobenthos in Cibeureum Lake, Tasikmalaya, West Java, Indonesia
The purpose of this research is to determine the water quality of Cibeureum Lake, Tasikmalaya City by analyzing the macrozoobenthos community structure. The study was conducted from September to November 2021 using a survey method with purposive sampling. Descriptive analysis was employed to analyze the observation data. The studi revealed the presence three classes and eight species, the species being Filopaludina javanaica, Pila ampullacea, Pomacea canaliculata, Melanoides turbeculata, Lymnaea rubiginosa, Indoplanorbis exustus, Chironomus sp., and Tubifex tubifex, with 3 species with the most composition being Pomacea canaliculata (28% ), Filopaludina javanaica (25%), and Melanoides turbeculata (13%).The results demonstrated that the water quality in Cieureum Lake, as determined by macrozoobenthos bioindicator, fell into the moderately polluted category. This is diversity indicated values ranged from 1.3 to 1.8, classifying the macrozoobenthos community as moderately diverse. The uniformity index value ranged from 0.57 to 0.66, indicating an unstable population conditions, suggesting moderate uniformity of macrozoobenthos in the lake. According to FBI (Functional Biological Index) score, Cibeureum Lake exhibit a range of water quality criteria from very good to fair. Station 2 and station 4 obtained excellent waters quality rating with an FBI rating 3.97 and 4.16 respectively. Station 1 obtained a good water quality rating with an FBI score 4.72, while station 3 received a sufficient water quality rating with an FBI rating 5.50. Consequently, from the results of this study the pollution status of Cibeureum Lake was ranged from slightly polluted to quite polluted
Selection of Proteolytic Bacteria from the Digestive Tract of Vanname Shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei)
The feed consumed by shrimp is not all digestible but some are excreted in the form of waste in the form of feces and other metabolic waste such as urine and ammonia. The amount of feed released into feces depends on the suitability of feed components with enzymatic capabilities in the shrimp digestive tract or digestibility. One of the efforts to maintain aquaculture water quality is by using probiotics that can be mixed with feed and applied directly to aquaculture medium. The study aimed to obtain proteolytic and probiotic candidate bacteria from the digestive tract of vanname shrimp. Bacterial screening was carried out by isolating bacteria from the digestive tract of shrimp obtained from pond farmers in the Suppa area of Pinrang Regency. The results of the isolation of probiotic candidate bacteria from the digestive tract of shrimp obtained a total of 20 isolates of proteolytic candidates for further selection, then five isolates with different morphological characteristics were selected. The five isolates were then tested for proteolytic activity. The results showed the greatest proteolytic activity was observed in the UM5 isolate with an activity value of 17 mm; followed by the UM1 isolate at 10 mm; UM2 at 9 mm, UM4 at 7 mm; and UM3 at 5 mm. Then tested for resistance to acidic and alkaline conditions (pH 2.5) and (pH 7.5), bacterial attachment test, and antagonistic test against Vibrio harveyi bacteria. The five isolates can survive in acidic conditions (pH 2.5 and alkaline (pH 7.5)) for eight hours. Antagonistic tests showed that the five selected isolates (UM1, UM2, UM3, UM4, and UM5) can inhibit the growth of Vibrio harveyi bacteria by forming an inhibition zone around the isolate. The highest inhibition zone was found in the UM5 isolate at 19 mm, followed by the UM2 isolate at 16 mm, UM4 at 15.5 mm, and UM3 at 15 mm. While the smallest antagonistic was obtained in isolate UM1 at 12 mm. The bacterial population in the swab shows the ability to colonize or attach a bacterium so the greater the number of bacteria in the swab, the better the bacteria are in sticking. The largest bacterial population was found in isolate UM5 which amounted to 2.53 x 107 Cfu/ml. isolate UM 4 amounted to 7.27 x 106 cfu/ml. Furthermore, UM3 amounted to 6.78 x 106 Cfu/ml. Then UM 2 amounted to 3.32 x 106 cfu/ml. the smallest population was shown by isolate UM1, which amounted to 4.5 x 105 cfu.ml
Social Mapping of Fish Farming Communities in Cikancung Village, Cikancung District, Bandung Regency
This study aims to compile a social mapping of fish farming communities and social factors that influence fishery development in cikancung village, cikancung district, bandung regency. This research method is a survey method. This research was carried out from july 2023 – august 2023 in cikancung village. The data required is qualitative data, namely primary data and secondary data. Primary data was obtained through interviews and questionnaires with fish farmers in cikancung village, while secondary data was obtained through documents from the cikancung village government and the food and fisheries security service, bandung regency, west java. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling. The data analysis method in this research is qualitative descriptive analysis. The results showed that the social conditions of the cultivators were in the productive age with a secondary education level. Livelihoods as fish cultivators are sidelines. Most of the fish farming business is carried out by men, while women play a role in domestic activities. The social stratification of the cultivating community is at the lower strata, namely as ordinary people. Social factors that hinder cultivators in developing their business are uneven levels of education, lack of counseling, and cultivation as a side livelihood. A SWOT Analysis of Aquaculture for Sustainable Management in Coastal Waters of Ba Ria – Vung Tau Province, Vietnam
Aquaculture stands as a vital marine economic sector in Vietnam\u27s coastal provinces, with specific significance in Ba Ria - Vung Tau. The steady growth of this sector plays a pivotal role in local socio-economic development. However, this growth has led to legitimate concerns about environmental sustainability and socio-economic progress. Building on the findings from sociological surveys conducted through questionnaires and comprehensive interviews in 2022, this article has applied the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats (SWOT) analysis method to pinpoint the existing issues that need attention in the aquaculture sector. Moreover, this study proposes strategies and guidelines for aquaculture development in a manner that ensures responsible environmental management while balancing economic growth with societal well-being. The aquaculture industry in Ba Ria-Vung Tau is presented with numerous growth opportunities, driven by the rising consumer demand for seafood consumption, ongoing technological advancements, and the pursuit of sustainable development goals. Yet, it has to navigate challenges such as resource scarcity, market competition, regulatory constraints, and the perpetual threats of climate change and disease. The industry\u27s advancement is contingent on the collaboration of stakeholders to leverage strengths, address weaknesses, seize opportunities, and confront threats, all while minimizing adverse impacts on nature, ecosystems, and socio-economic aspects. To secure long-term sustainability, the industry must embrace prudent management practices, foster innovation, encourage collaboration, and proactively tackle these challenges. This work underscores the multifaceted nature of sustainable aquaculture and underscores the indispensable role of informed, forward-thinking management in ensuring its enduring viability
Changes in Fish Flakes Prepared from Pangas (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus) Mince during Storage
Aims: This study was conducted to prepare fish flakes using Pangas (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus) mince with wheat flour and other ingredients and to determine the sensory and physicochemical changes of fish flakes during storage.
Place and Duration of Study: Fish Processing and quality control laboratory of the department of Fisheries Technology, Faculty of Fisheries, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. Study duration was from June 2021-July 2022.
Methodology: Initially, fish flakes were prepared using 30%, 40% and 50% fish mince with other ingredients. Among the samples, fish flakes containing 50% fish mince (S3N) gained the highest score in the conducted panel test. During the storage of 9 months at room temperature (28° to 32°C) in polythene zipper packets, different properties of S3N was analyzed at 15- and 30-days of intervals.
Results: The changes in proximate composition of the sample during storage indicated that only minor alterations occurred in fish flakes. During this study period no remarkable changes observed in the color, flavor, texture of fish flakes. Mold growth on fish flakes samples was not found.
Conclusion: The findings of this study can be concluded as, popular snack item like fish flakes can be prepared using pangas fish mince by incorporating with other ingredients which can be stored at room temperature (28° to 32°C) in polythene zipper packets for 270 days without any major changes in compositional and consumption quality
Distribution of Blue Swim Crab (Portunus pelagicus) Catching Areas Using Foldable Traps in the Coastal Waters of Barru Regency, Indonesia
The utilization of blue swim crab resources poses a significant challenge that requires appropriate solutions, thus necessitating effective resource management. Uncontrolled fishing conditions can lead to economic overfishing if proper management is not implemented. Moreover, fishermen compete to increase their fishing efforts, leading to the need for capturing in more distant areas. Therefore, rehabilitation and management actions need to be promptly executed. This study aims to analyze blue swim crab catching areas based on distance from the coast, crab weight, carapace width, size of adult crabs, and the size of crabs eligible for capture in the coastal waters of Barru Regency. The research was conducted over 8 months, from May to December 2022, in the blue swim crab fishing grounds in the waters of Barru Regency, South Sulawesi Province. Data Was collected through a combination of survey and observation methods. The collected data were descriptively analyzed SPSS and Microsoft Excel programs. The results indicate that: (1) Constituted 51.8% of the captured individuals, and females constituted the remaining 48.2%; (2) The average weight and carapace width of these crabs fluctuated based on the distance and depth of the fishing areas; (3) A higher number of adult-sized crabs were caught in the crab catching areas at a distance of 3-5 nautical miles from the coast; (4) The percentage of adult crabs was larger compared to crabs eligible for capture, indicating symptoms of overfishing; (5) All the individuals were of mature size. Specifically, 88.9% for male crabs and 94.3% for female crabs. The criteria used to determine eligibility for capture were carapace width above 11 cm
Study on the Stability of Probiotic (Spirulina fusiformis) Incorporated Fish Diets
Aquaculture is one of the fastest-growing food production sectors in the world. The use of probiotics might be a good option to reduce the risk of disease and enhance fish productivity. Probiotics thus are opening a new era in the health management strategy for aquatic species including finfish and shellfish. Probiotics are beneficial microorganisms that help in maintaining the well-being of the host animal. The development of non-antibiotic and environment-friendly probiotic feeds is one of the key factors for health management in aquaculture. The benefits of probiotic supplements include improved feed value, enzymatic contribution to digestion, and inhibition of pathogenic microorganisms. Feed stability is of paramount importance in the manufacture of aquaculture diets. The water stability of the feed pellet depends on the individual ingredients that bind together. Hence the study was designed to investigate the stability of probiotic feeds in water. Probiotic Spirulina added feed samples were soaked in a glass beaker containing water and allowed to remain for time intervals ranging from 10 to 60 minutes to study the stability of feed. The results showed that the control feed pellet (40.00 + 1.00) was the least stable among the types of experimental feed (SF2 and SF3) in 60 minutes of immersion. The increased level of stability (71.66 %) was recorded in (2 & 3% inclusion) feed type
Evaluation of Proximate Composition and Seasonal Variations of the Muscle Tissue of Mouth-Brooding Tilapia Oreochromis mossambica from Meghadrigedda Reservoir, Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, India
This study aimed to investigate the proximate composition and seasonal variations in the muscle of mouth-brooding tilapia O. mossambica from Meghadrigedda reservoir, Visakhapatnam. The bio-chemical analysis such as total protein, total fat, total carbohydrates, ash and moisture content in the muscle of fish was taken for seasonal variations in relation to reproductive characters during 2021-22.The total protein percent of the fish O. mossambica ranged from 24.5 to 36.8 in females and males was 24.5 and 37.5. The total fat percentage ranged from 5.4 to 8.6 in females and males was 6.4 to 8.7. Total Carbohydrates percentage was 4.1to 5.5 in females and males was4.8 and 5.9. Moisture percentage was 80.2 to 84.5 in females and males was 75.5 to 85.5. Ash percentage was 4.1 to 4.9 in females and males was 4.1 to 4.8. The results of the present clearly indicate that there was differences in the proximate composition of the male and female species
