    Numerical Simulations and Fish Diversity in Relation to Physico-chemical Parameters of Four Aquatic Stations in Badagry Division, Lagos, Nigeria

    Aim: This study investigated common fish assemblages in four aquatic stations (Gbaji, Topo, Agboju and Ajegunle) in relation to physico-chemical parameters of its water and as well simulates numerical values of the physico-chemical parameters for year 2024. Methodology: Data were collected and computed using standard methods and algorithm machine learning model respectively. Statistical tools employed include ANOVA and Pearson correlation (r) test. All the parameters (except turbidity, chemical oxygen demand and biochemical oxygen demand) were within standard permissible limits. Results: The results of Pearson’s correlation analysis showed that increase in amount of fish species in the sampling stations was significantly and strongly linked to the decrease in value of biochemical oxygen demand (r = −0.571, P=.05), total dissolved solids (r= −0.696, P=.05) and conductivity (r=−0.882, P<0.01) while increase in number of fish species was significantly and strongly linked to the increase in value of dissolved oxygen(r= 0.991, P=.05).  However, salinity (r= 0.387), sulphate (r = 0.212) and turbidity (r= 0.282) had weak positive relationship with the number of fish species. The prediction by the machine learning algorithm modeling system revealed that at Agboju, total hardness would exceed permissible limit in February and September, carbondioxide (C02) in February, May and June, 2024.On the other hand, level of C02 at Ajegunle would exceed permissible limit in January, May, August and September, and total hardness in November, 2024. For both Agboju and Ajegunle, turbidity and chemical oxygen demand level would exceed limits throughout the months in year 2024. Conclusion: Hence, effects of higher parameters could results in declination of distribution of demersal fish species which often shuttle between the water bottom and surface

    Food and Feeding Habits of Schilbe mystus from the Lower River Benue at Makurdi

    A study on food and feeding habit of Schilbe mystus in the Lower River Benue at Makurdi, was carried out. Two hundred (200) fish samples were examined for stomach content. The body weight (WT), Total Length (TL) and Standard Length (SL) of each specimen was measured to the nearest gram and centimeters using a weighing balance and tape/ meter rule on a dissection board. The length weight relationship was determined by plotting a graph of Length-Weight. The gut for each fish specimen was cut open using a pair of scissors and scrapped onto a grease-free glass slide and examined for stomach contents and viewed microscopically. Result revealed the following food items; insects (64.42%), fish (20.2%), crustaceans (10.6%), detritus (15.4%) and unidentified materials (50.1%). Insects recorded the highest percentage in the stomach both on frequency of occurrence and gastro-somatic index methods while crustacean recorded the least percentage in both frequency of occurrence and gastro-somatic index. Smaller fish within the length range of 10.1-15.0 cm weighing between 0.1- 50 g were more of empty stomach (65.0% and 67.2%) than those with food (35.0% and 32.8%). Fish within the length range of 25.1- 30.0cm and 35.1- 40.0cm weighing 100.1- 200.0g and 200.1- 350.0g were found to contain stomach with full diet components, particularly insects, fish and crustaceans. Length weight relationship (LWR) and Length- length relationship (LLR) indicated that values of correlation coefficient (r2) are highly correlated, r2 > 0.7 and r2 > 0.8 at p < 0.05. Therefore, Schilbe mystus tropical features in the lower River Benue showed that it is a carnivorous and the pray type is influenced by their availability. This study provides data for the better understanding of the biology and ecology of Schilbe mystus in the Benue River which will also contribute to the development of aquaculture industry

    Attachment Phenomenon of Thick-shelled Squid Eggs on Selected Substrates: A Case in Barru Regency of South Sulawesi, Indonesia

    Squids, when spawning, attach their eggs to the preferred substrate to develop well in the selected conditions. Experimental fishing research was conducted by direct observation of squid activities in the spawning area where squid eggs were attached to different substrates. The adult squid would first conduct an inspection and then attach their eggs to the selected substrate. The results showed that squid egg attachment time was conducted in the morning from 06.00 AM to 07.00 AM for 15 minutes at a duration of about 10-30 seconds. The number of egg capsules found in squid houses and various substrates in nature was 1,698 and 1,568 egg capsules. Squid eggs were found at a depth of 1-7 meters, with the most at a depth of 3 meters with 2,718 egg capsules

    Composition of Flavour Non Volatile Compound Steamed Gourami (Osphronemus gouramy)

    This research aims to identify the composition of non-volatile flavor compounds contained in the steamed gourami (Osphronemus gouramy). The research was carried out experimentally with the treatment of steamed gourami samples (at 100℃ for ± 30 minutes). This research was conducted at the Fisheries Product Processing Laboratory, Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, Padjadjaran University, Jatinangor; IPB Integrated Laboratory. A simple product description test was carried out on samples which included the appearance of the meat, aroma, texture, and taste. Identification of non-volatile flavor compounds using tools High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). The results showed that steamed gourami has 15 identified non-volatile flavor compounds of 15 amino acid compounds. Two umami-flavored amino acids are 4.09% glutamic acid and 2.67% aspartic acid. The four sweet tasting amino acids are 1.53% alanine, 1.19% threonine, 1.13% glycine and 1.01% serine. The nine bitter amino acids are lysine 2.54%, leucine 2.11%, arginine 1.64%, valine 1.30%, isoleucine 1.29%, phenylalanine 1.14%, tyrosine 0.91%, methionine 0, 79% and histidine 0.66%. Steamed gourami has an intact appearance and is pale white in color. The aroma of steamed gourami is fresh and tasty according to the specific gourami. The texture of the meat is dense, soft and very compact. The taste of steamed gourami is savory according to the specific type

    The Effectiveness of the Red Water System (RWS) Technique in African Catfish Culture (Clarias gariepinus): A review

    This article aims to analyzed the effectiveness of the Red Water System Technique on the survival and growth of cultivated catfish from the conclusions of several previous researchers. The method used in this literature study is to review several research articles on the success of catfish farming using the red water system technique. We collected and identified 50 academic articles, trusted databases, proceedings, books, dissertations, government regulations, and other international journals that were potentially relevant to the specified keywords. Upon review, the relevant literature was aggregated to 32. The collected review data is then compiled into a manuscript. The result is that probiotics in the red water system technique can maintain water quality according to quality standards by utilizing nutrient levels in waters as a food source for bacteria L.casei and catfish have high growth rates due to the addition of probiotics to the waters, which makes them resistant to disease. In conclusion, the Red Water System technique has improved growth performance, survival rate, digestibility, immunity, and disease resistance in African catfish compared to African catfish culture using conventional methods which can benefit the farmers

    Until now, the nutritional needs of larvae have only been partially identified and much is still unknown. The nutritional needs of climbing perch larvae after the yolk has been absorbed requires a comprehensive study. The research took place at the Wet Laboratory, Faculty of Agriculture, Achmad Yani University.The objective of this research was to study about climbing perch (Anabas testudineus Bloch) larvae viability on removal of exogenous food by distribution of dissolved organic matter from fermentation of chicken waste. Completely randomized design with 4 treatments and 6 replicates was used in this research. Application dissolved organic matter was 250 mL/aquaria (A), 500 mL/aquaria (B), 750 mL/aquaria (C), and without dissolved organic matter (D). The data is analyzed using analysis of variance (Anova), and Duncan\u27s Multiple Range Test (DMRT).  Larvae survival rate for all treatments was very low. Each reached 0% in days 9 and 10 for treatment A and B. For treatment C and D in day 8. Anova result indicated that dissolved organic matter had significant effect (P<0.05) to absolute growth of larvae. DMRT test showed that each treatment had significant difference, except treatment C to D had no difference. The best growth for this research was treatment B

    Carrageenan in Seaweed (Eucheuma sp.) and Use of Carrageenan in Fishery Food Products: A Review

    Carrageenan is a hydrocolloid compound found in red seaweed (Rodhophyta). Carrageenan-producing sources are Eucheuma cottonii seaweed with kappa carrageenan type and Eucheuma spinoum with iota carrageenan type. Kappa carrageenan is widely used in food products because its availability is very abundant in nature compared to iota and lambda carrageenan types. The boiling method with an alkaline solution is a method that is often used in extracting carrageenan. Carrageenan has properties as a stabilizer, thickener, gelling agent, and emulsifier.     Selective Gap Analysis of the Escape Hatch in the Umbrella Trap with Six Doors for the Blue Swimming Crab (Portunus pelagicus)

    The blue swimming crab fishermen in Teluk Makassar, Lantebung Village tend to exploit the blue swimming crab resources without considering Sustainable Fisheries and environmental sustainability by using non-environmentally friendly fishing gear. The innovation of constructing a trap with an escape hatch is expected to provide an opportunity for undersized blue swimming crabs (carapace width < 10 cm) to escape from the trap through the escape hatch. This research aims to determine the selectivity and effectiveness of using the escape hatch to allow blue swimming crabs to escape in the waters of Teluk Makassar, Lantebung Village. The research was conducted for two months, from November to December 2022. Blue swimming crab samples were collected from foldable traps and dragon traps used by the fishermen, and the crabs were collected while still alive. The experimental method was employed, with four treatments and 21 replications. Based on the estimation of the selection ogive and the selectivity ogive curve, it can be concluded that the selectivity of the 3.5x4 escape hatch is more effective in allowing blue swimming crabs with carapace width below 10 cm to escape compared to other escape hatch sizes, thus avoiding the capture of immature or maturing crabs with mature gonads

    Establishing a Dose-response Toxicity for Clarias gariepinus Fingerlings Exposed to Ethanolic Extract of Lantana camara

    The toxicity of lantana camara on the survival and histopathology of gills of Clarias gariepinus fish from Fisheries unit, Akwa Ibom State University Obio Akpa, farm was studied in two batches (A, and B) using the ethanolic extract (EE) of Lantana camara for 96 hours under laboratory conditions. Five concentrations ranging from 0, 2, 3, 4, and 5 mg/L were prepared from the (EE) of L. camara for the toxicity test. The experimental animals showed different percentage mortalities with toxicant concentrations. The 96 hours LC50 for C. gariepinus for both batches (A, and B) was given at 2.983 mg/l representing a log transformed concentration of 0.475 mg/l a point where 50 % of the test organisms would be killed at the end of the experiment. The different batches of C. gariepinus (P>0.05) had no significant difference in mortality indicating that the ethanolic extract had same toxic effects on the test organisms. Toxicant exposure induced behavioral changes such as abnormal and uncoordinated swimming movement, restlessness, respiratory difficulties and attempt at jumping out was observed during the study. The results of the present study suggest that the ethanolic extract of L. camara had severe impacts on the test organism resulting in mortality. The effects of the plant extract on the gills of C. gariepinus fingerlings had severe impacts on the test organisms. Samples were taken from each of the concentrations to examine the effects of the extract on the gills of C. gariepinus. There was no observable change in the gills of the test organism in the control group. In the 2 mg/l concentration, the gill showed diffused epithelial degeneration of the primary lamella., in the 3 mg/l and 4mg/l concentration it was observed that the gills showed complete diffused epithelial degeneration of the lamella. Although cartilaginous filament of the epithelium was preserved between the two adjacent filament in skeletal muscle. Finally, in the 5 mg/l concentration the gill section showed diffused epithelial degeneration of the primary lamella and few retained processes of the secondary lamella. From the findings, it is observed that extract obtained from L. camara is toxic to aquatic life. Therefore, effective management strategies should be put in place to ensure safety compliance

    Relationship between Feeding Regime and Fish Growth

    Feeding regime or feeding rate? is how much to feed the fish. From how much or portion used for fish feed can affect fish growth. Feeding regime is the determination of the amount of feed per day based on the feeding rate (FR). Feeding rate is the feed requirement per day based on fish biomass and weight. Aims: This research aims to find out how the relationship between feeding regime and fish growth and development. Study Design:  Journal review. Methodology: The research method used was descriptive analysis method or library research by collecting data from written sources, namely journals that are relevant to the topic of the writing being carried out. After the data was collected, the next was the data selection in accordance with the research objectives. The selected data was then processed systematically and structured while data analysis was carried out using a descriptive approach by presenting the data obtained in narrative form. Results: The result of this research indicated that fish growth and development are influenced by internal and external factors, one of which is the fish feeding regime. Conclusion: Feeding regime is an important factor in aquaculture. This feeding regime includes how to feed and the portion that will be given to the fish being cultured. Good feed contains sufficient nutrients as needed for fish growth. In addition to the feed factor, growth is also influenced by internal and external factors such as the type of fish, type of feed, environment and others. A good feeding regime or rate? must be adjusted to the nutritional needs of fish, each type of fish has different nutritional needs
