    Socio-economic Conditions of Dry Fishers and Wholesalers: A Case Study of the Coastal Dry Fishing Communities of Bangladesh

    The coastal areas of Bangladesh, particularly the southeast region, is notorious for producing a majority of dried fish products in the country by recruiting numerous dry fishers and wholesalers (locally called Mohajon). This study examines the socio-economic condition and livelihood status of small scale dry fish producing communities in Nazirartek, a renowned fish drying village situated in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh. It was perceived that the dry fishers lived in a very underdeveloped state with low income and literacy rates, poor living standards and malnourished condition, whereas the livelihood of wholesalers was comparatively better. The inadequate compensation during rainy seasons was another reason for the unimproved livelihood of the fishers. Because of this, they had to take up substitute agricultural or other occupations during the off-seasons of fish drying activities. Majority (60%) of the wholesalers had attended secondary school, considering 56.66% fishers went up to primary school with no further secondary school education. Furthermore, over 50% fishers had an annual income of 81,000 to 100,000 BDT while 70% wholesalers earned above 100,000 BDT year-1. Primarily, the major constraints encountered by the communities are vulnerability to extreme weather, reliance on loans due to low wages, inadequate off-season income opportunities, lack of good treatment facilities, no prior training and scarcity of technological facilities. With appropriate management strategies, comprehensive marketing systems, national co-operation and employment opportunities, the dry fishing industries of Bangladesh can be developed to its’ full potential

    The Effect of Substitute Feed of Fish Meal and Meat Bone Meal (MBM) on Growth Performance and Survival Rate of Juvenile Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus)

    The research aims to create a feed formulation based on the use of meat bone meal (MBM) to improve the production performance of juvenile tilapia. The experiment method used was an experimental method using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD), consisting of 5 treatments and 3 replications: treatment A (control/commercial feed), B (fish meal 75%:25% MBM), C (fish meal 50%:50% MBM), D (fish meal 25%:75% MBM), and E (fish meal 0% 100% MBM). The juvenile tilapia used were 5-8 cm in length and weighed 5,85 ± 0,029 g. The results showed  that the effects of substitution of fish meal and MBM for each treatment were significantly different (P<0,05) on the parameters of the production performance of juvenile tilapia. Treatment D gave  the best result on production performance, namely SGR (1,45 ± 0,139%g/day) and SR (97 ± 0,82%)

    Assessment of Sexual Maturity and Spawning Biology of Channa punctata (Bloch, 1793): Conservation and Reproduction

    The study was conducted in the freshwater station of the Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute in Mymensingh between September 2021 and August 2022. Finding the sex ratio, sexual maturity, LWR, reproductive biology, fecundity, and histological examination of gonads of C. punctata were the main objectives of the present study. The correlation between length and weight was determined by analyzing the power function. Both sexes showed positive allometric growth and the correlation between length and weight was TW= 0.011TL3.09 for males and TW= 0.009TL3.11 for females. The mean condition factor for males was 1.09 (0.89 to 1.24), whereas the mean condition factor for females was 1.12 (0.95 to 1.25). In both cases, the condition factor was more than 1, indicating that the physical condition of both sexes was excellent. Among the 329 samples, 142 (43.16%) were male and 187 (56.84%) were female (male: female = 1: 1.32). The chi-square test showed a significant departure from the 1:1 ratio between the number of males and females within the sample months (df = 1, χ2= 0.01, p=0.05). When they reached first sexual maturity (L50), both sexes were of similar size, as evidenced by their lengths of 14.95 cm. The peak spawning season for both sexes was observed in June and July; however spawning season lasted from April to July.  According to the study results, July was recorded the highest absolute fecundity (23609), while December recorded the lowest (1998)

    Chemically Treated Chicken Feather Meal for Fish Feed

    The increasing demand and consumption of chicken meat from year to year makes the waste produced also increase, especially chicken feathers. One of the physical waste utilization of chicken feathers is handicrafts that use chicken feathers such as dream catchers. The utilization of chicken feather waste as a feed ingredient is still relatively rare because chicken feathers have crude protein which includes structural protein called keratin. Therefore, it is necessary to process it first so that the keratin in the chicken feather can be degraded properly. The purpose of this review is to provide an overview of the chemical processing of chicken feathers and its application as one of the raw materials that make up fish feed. Based on the results of the review of published articles, chicken feathers contain protein and amino acids that are quite good as fish feed. Chemical processing of chicken feathers is considered more effective and economical because it does not damage the protein in chicken feathers and produces more natural chicken feather flour and can reduce damaged amino acids. The quality of chicken feathers is influenced by chemicals, concentration and length of processing time. Various fish species such as tilapia, catfish and catfish show good growth and survival when fed feed containing chicken feather meal. In other words, chicken feather meal has the potential to be used as an alternative raw material in making fish feed

    Growth Performances of Clarias gariepinus Fry Fed Hermetia illucens Based Diet Supplemented with Synthetic Amino Acids (Methionine and Lysine)

    Objective: this study focused on the effect of a local feed supplement with synthetic amino acids (methionine and lysine) on the survival and growth of Clarias gariepinus fry in happas. Study Design: the study took place at the DJOKWE aquaculture farm located in the Cameroon Littoral Region, Moungo Department, Nkongsamba 1st District. Methodology: Six (06) local T0- diets without synthetic amino acid negative control, T0+ coppens imported feed positive control, T1 (L1.5/M1) containing 1.5% lysine and 1% methionine, T2 (L1, 5/M1.5) containing 1.5% lysine and 1.5% methionine, T3 (M1/L2) containing 1% methionine and 2% lysine, T4 (M1/L2.5) containing 1% methionine and 2.5% lysine were tested in triplicate on 540 fry of 10± 3.1g distributed in 18 happas of 0.5 m2. The fish were fed 3 times per day at a rate of 8% of the ichthyo biomass. Every 14 days, zootechnical parameters were evaluated. Results: depending on the level of supplementation, the survival rate was higher for the T0+ coppens treatment, 96.66%, and lower for T4 (M1/L2.5) supplemented with 1% methionine and 2.5% of lysine with 80%. The significantly highest average weight gain (p<0.05) was recorded with the T0+coppens treatment (89.67±1.52g) compared to the T1 (L1.5/M1) and low (66. 33 ±00g) compared to treatment T3 (M1/L2). The specific growth rate was higher (p˃0.05) or (2.83%±0.16g/d) with T2(L1.5/M1.5) and lower (0.78%±0 .02%g/d) for T0+ coppens. As for the condition factor K, it is significantly higher for the T0+coppens treatment (0.46%±0.030) and lower for the T4 treatment (0.29±0.023). Conclusion: the incorporation of 5% of black soldier fly larva into local feed supplemented with 1.5% lysine and 1% methionine makes it possible to improve the survival of Clarias gariepinus fry but also their growth as well as the production cost

    Estimation of Water Quality in the Major Nursery Grounds of Hilsa: Insights from Plankton and Nutrient Regimes

    The biological and physicochemical attributes of a river ecosystem usually reveal the status of the consequential species richness index of the biodiversity and subsistent aquatic life. Towards appraisal of water quality, physicochemical parameters (i.e., temperature, pH, DO, transparency alkalinity and hardness), water nutrients (nitrate, phosphate) and concentration of Chlorophyll a were determined. Samples were collected from six hilsa sanctuaries. The pH value was found slightly alkaline (7.6±0.6) and transparency was ranged (44.4±10.6 cm) followed by alkalinity (112.4 ±26.4 mg/L), hardness (304.5±69.5 mg/L), CO2 (10.3±1.2 mg/L), water temperature (25.6±0.8 ºC), nitrate (0.005±0.01 mg/L), phosphate (0.002±0.0004 mg/L) and DO (7.7±1.1 mg/L). Chlorophyll a was estimated (8.21 ± 2.3 µg/L), which represents the biomass of phytoplankton. The largest quantity of plankton (both in number and taxa) was found in the Meghna River basin as a natural food at station 1 (St-1) and Station 4 (St-4) compared to the other stations. Twelve groups (families) of phytoplankton comprising 26 genera and zooplankton having 14 genera were identified at all sampling stations. The density of plankton was found to be maximum (46×102 cells L-1) at Station 5 (St-5) and while minimum (24×102 cells L-1) at Station 6 (St-6) during the investigation. This evaluation of the physical, chemical, and biological profile of the environment in the country\u27s sanctuary zones provides obvious evidence that is crucial for understanding the Hilsa Fisheries Management Action Plan and for the sustainable management of Hilsa Fishery

    Characterization of the Iraqi Artisanal Marine Fisheries, Northwest of the Arabian Gulf

    The study described the characteristics of the Iraqi artisanal marine fisheries in the northwest Arabian Gulf between January 2020 and December 2021. The study aimed to update knowledge on the fish landings of the artisanal marine fisheries in the study area. A total of 19,877 t of fish were landed in 2020 and 13,784 t in 2021. A Student’s t-test showed a significant difference between the species’ landings over the two years. The main species exploited were mullets (10.5%), threadfin bream (10.4%) and spotted leatherskin (8.4%) in 2020, whereas threadfin bream (14.2%), mullets (9.6%) and tigertooth croaker (8.3%) were mainly landed in 2021. Unfortunately, the contribution of river shad catches has dropped to lower levels over recent years, comprising 3.6-5.8% of the total landings during 2020-2021. Shrimps contributed 15.6 and 16.1% of the total landings during 2020 and 2021, respectively, and mixed fish contributed 11.8 and 15.3%, respectively. The trends of the landings of the main fish groups increased substantially from 2011 to 2021. Unfortunately, the contribution of river shad (T. ilisha) catches has dropped to lower levels over recent years, in contrast with the contributions of other species. Therefore, the study recommends the following management measures for the river shad stock: to protect the brood stock during the breeding season no fishing should be allowed in the Shatt Al-Arab River during the main spawning migration from May to June and small T. ilisha (<23.0 cm) should not be caught

    Performance of Whiteleg Shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) with Additional of Dolomite to the Feed

    The objective of this study was to analyze the use dolomite in diet of whiteleg shrimp. It was conducted in June to August 2018 at the hatchery of Pangkep State Polytechnic of Agricultural. Experimental design used a completely randomized analysis with 4 treatments, A (control), B, C, and D with the additional of dolomite at dose 4, 8, and 12 mg/kg, respectively with 3 replications. Animal test were PL 25 from the shrimp hatchery in Barru District and acclimatized before stocking in aquarium (30l), with density of 20 ind., reared for 40 days, fed pellets (30% protein, 10% biomass, 5 times). The molting intensity (MI) determined by observing and counting the number of moulting every day. Observation of growth rate (GR) using a digital scale (0.0001 g) and survival rate (SR) by calculated the number of live shrimps at the end of the study. Water quality parameter included temperature, salinity, DO and pH. Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was performed to evaluate the effect of treatment on MI, GR, and SR and followed with the Least Significant Difference (LSD) Test.  ANOVA for MI, GR, and SR revealed that dosage have different significant (P<0.05) and LSD test showed that the dose was not optimal (only differentiated between those given dolomite). The highest of MI (avg. 18 inds.), GR (1.82% /day), and SR (78.33%) were obtained in C and the lowest one obtained in A.  Data of water quality obtained temperatures 29.87-31.03°C, salinity 25-30 ppt, DO 4.86-5.51 mg/l which were still in the proper range. The highest pH value was obtained in D was 7.22-7.75, while the lowest one obtained in A 6.95-7.16. The highest MI, GR, and SR were obtained in C, temperature, salinity, DO, and pH are still in the proper for the growth and survival of shrimps

    Growth and Health Status of Spiny Lobsters and Snubnose Pompano with Multilevel Floating Net Cage System

    The cultivation of multilevel floating net cages (MFNC) systems is believed to be able to increase production capacity without increasing the horizontal area of ​​the cultivation area. Research on the effect of using MFNC on the growth and health performance of Spiny lobsters and Snubnose pompano has never existed, so a study was conducted with the aim of comparing the growth and health performance of spiny lobsters and Snubnose pompano in floating net cage (FNC) and MFNC cultivation systems. The research method used was a field experiment with a comparative analysis of spiny lobsters and Snubnose pompano cultivation with different cultivation systems, namely the MFNC and FNC systems with 3 replications. The rearing lasted for 2 months and was fed trash fish as much as 5% of the biomass every day. Parameters of spiny lobsters and Snubnose pompano growth performance observed included weight growth, carapace length growth, total length growth, and specific growth rate. The health status of spiny lobsters observed quantitatively was the total hemocytes counts and hemolymph glucose levels, and Snubnose pompano by counting erythrocytes and blood leukocytes. The results showed that there was no difference in growth performance, survival and health status of spiny lobsters and Snubnose pompano reared using MFNC and FNC systems based on paired two sample for means, because p value > 0.05 for all growth parameters survival and health status. Thus, the use of a multilevel floating net cage system in lobster cultivation can increase FNC productivity and be efficient in optimal space utilization and does not affect water quality, especially the parameters of temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen and salinity. There were no significant differences in the growth performance, survival, and health status of lobsters and Snubnose pompano when reared using the MFNC and FNC cultivation systems

    Utilization of Fermented Coconut Epidermis Using Oncom Mushroom (Neurospora sitophila) on the Growth Performance of Red Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) Fingerlings

    This study aims to analyze the effect of feed based on coconut husk waste fermented Neurospora sitophila on the growth of red tilapia, and to determine the optimal dose of coconut husk waste. This research was carried out in May – June 2021, at the Aquaculture Laboratory Building IV, Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, Padjadjaran University Bandung, West Java45363 Indonesia. This study used a completely randomized design with four treatments and four replications. Treatment A (Control), Treatment B (feed containing 25% coconut husk filler), treatment C (feed containing 50% coconut husk filler), and treatment D (feed containing 75% coconut husk filler). Parameters observed were Specific Growth Rate, Feed Conversion Ratio, Survival Rate, Feed characteristics and water quality (Temperature, pH, DO, Ammonia). The results showed that treatment C(feed containing 50% of coconut husk filler) gave significantly different results in the parameters of SGR and FCR, but not significantly different in survival rates. Water quality parameter values ​​are in good condition for the growth and survival of red tilapia. The highest SGR value in treatment C was 1.26%. The lowest FCR value was in treatment C of 1.90. The most optimal dose of fermented coconut husk for the growth of red tilapia is treatment C
