Profit and Feasibility Analysis of Tilapia Cultivation Business in Floating Net Cages, Barito Kuala Regency
Cultivators also have problems, namely reduced profits each time they harvest compared to previous years. The aim of the study was to analyze the benefits and feasibility of cultivating tilapia in floating net cages in Barito Kuala Regency, South Kalimantan. This research was conducted in Marabahan District, City of Barito Kuala Regency, cultivating fish in floating net cages. The study used 2 respondents who were given floating net cage loan assistance from the government, but 1 respondent for feed and seeds came from their own funds. Tilapia aquaculture in floating net cages is said to be profitable if the revenue value is greater than the total expenditure. To analyze the feasibility of investing in floating net tilapia aquaculture in Barito Kuala district, calculations on investment criteria are used which include Net Present Value (NPV), Net Benefit Ratio (NBCR), and Internal Rate of Return (IRR). The results of the analysis of the calculation of profit (π) for tilapia cage business can be stated that the tilapia cage business of the two managers each generates profits in 3 (three) study periods, marked by the criteria TR > TC where the total business revenue is greater than the total costs incurred. issued for production. The results of the financial feasibility analysis of tilapia cage business from 2 (two) managers stated that they had met the business feasibility criteria in 3 (three) study periods. Growth Performance and Muscle Composition of Carps (Labeo rohita, Catla catla, Cirrhinus cirrhosus and Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) at Different Protein Diets under Polyculture Farming
This study investigated the effects of three supplemental diets varying in protein percentage (T1- 28%, T2- 30%, and T3- 32%) on the fillet composition of Rohu (Labeo rohita), Catla (Catla catla), Mrigal (Cirrhinus cirrhosus), and Silver Carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) reared in ponds with supplemental diets. The control treatment with no supplemental feeding was also included to conduct the experiment. Fish from control ponds had substantially lower mean muscle protein concentrations than fish from ponds that received supplemental feeding, with 28% and 30% protein diets producing the most muscle protein. Compared to other treatments, fish fed a diet containing 32% protein had significantly (p<0.05) higher muscle lipid concentrations (2.22%). The muscle carbohydrates were greater in fish from ponds fed 28% protein diets. The Rohu (L. rohita) had the highest percent of muscle protein among the three sampled fish species, while Silver carp (H. molitrix) had the lowest, with all other species having intermediate values. The Mrigal (C. cirrhosus) and Silver Carp (H. molitrix) had the highest carbohydrate in their muscles, while Rohu (L. rohita) had the least carbohydrate content. During polyculture of cyprinids in ponds, the supplemental feeding of diets with protein ranging from 28 to 30% protein can be recommended as an optimal protein diet to attain the higher growth performance of carps avoiding the wastage of feed at the farmer’s level in semi-intensive polyculture farming
In-vitro Antibacterial Potentials of Essential oil from Citrus limon against Selected Pathogenic Bacteria Isolated from Cultured Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus)
Essential oils (EOs) from medicinal plants like lemon (Citrus limon) are considered promising to replace synthetic antibiotics in aquaculture production due to their ability to improve fish health. The aim of the research was to investigate the in vitro antibacterial potentials of varying levels of lemon EO against Streptococcus agalactiae, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Aeromonas hydrophila isolated from Nile Tilapia. This research was conducted at the Microbiology unit., Kenyan Marine and Fisheries Research Institute, Mombasa, Kenya and Environmental Microbiology and Biotechnology Laboratory, Department of Microbiology, University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Nigeria in December 2021. Extraction of EO from lemon peel was performed using steam hydro distillation. The quantitative and qualitative profiling of extracted oil was performed using Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry. The antibacterial potential of lemon EO was tested against some pathogens using the agar well diffusion method while the Minimum Inhibitory Concentrations (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) were determined by the broth dilution method. The most abundant chemical was D-Limonene (37.56%), 3-Carene (15.88%) and Terpinen-4-ol (93.4%). The lemon EO at 100% and 50% concentration respectively showed the highest antibacterial activity against S. agalactiae (26.00mm and 28.33mm) and E. coli (33.00mm and 30.00 mm); while the least activity was observed against A. hydrophila (8.33mm and 6.67 mm) at P = .05. The MIC and MBC values revealed that 50% lemon EO inhibited bacterial growth for S. agalactiae whereas it was greater than 50% for S. aureus, E. coli and A. hydrophila. Lemon EO has potential antibacterial properties against tested pathogens that affect cultured fish and could be considered a good candidate for further research to develop new antibacterial drugs in aquaculture
Analysis of Community Participation Level in Aquaculture in Situraja District, Sumedang Regency
This research aims to analyze the level of community participation in aquaculture in the Situraja District, Sumedang Regency. The method use in this study is a descriptive with a quantitative approach. The data for this study consists of two types: Primary data and secondary data. Primary data were obtained through written questions using a questionnaire distributed to 50 respondents. The research findings regarding the level of community participation in aquaculture in the Situraja District, Sumedang Regency, indicate an average community participation index of 0.55, which is still considered low. The community participation is at the Informing stage, where information is conveyed to the community. At this level, participation is considered Tokenism. In this stage, the community is merely included for formalities, allowing them to hear and have the right to voice their opinions, but they are not yet actively involved in decision-making
Utilization Chlorella sp. with the Addition of EM4 as a Phytoremediation Agent on Samples of Liquid Waste in the Cracker Industry, Indramayu Regency
Liquid waste from the cracker industry which is directly discharged into water bodies without prior treatment will cause water pollution which is characterized by a decrease in water quality. One alternative to reduce pollutant compounds biologically is to use the phytoremediation method. Phytoremediation is plant-mediated uptake of pollutants. This study aims to determine the best concentration of EM4 which is in symbiosis with Chlorella sp. in the process of reducing pollutant wastewater from the cracker industry. This study used a completely randomized design with five treatments and three replications. These treatments included PA (without adding EM4), PB (adding EM4 10 ml), PC (adding EM4 15 ml), PD (adding EM4 20 ml), PE (adding EM4 25 ml). The data obtained were analyzed statistically using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). If the calculated F is greater than the F table then proceed with the Duncan\u27s Multiple New Range Test (DNMRT) at the 5% level. The results showed that the addition of Chlorella sp. 800 ml (11,8 x 106 cells/ml) and the addition of 25 ml of EM4 is the best concentration in reducing the pollutant content of the cracker industrial wastewater. The PE treatment (EM4 25 ml) had a percentage decrease in the value of BOD5 83.82%, Ammonia of 99.91%, Phosphate of 95.78%, CO2 of 97.78%, and increased the density of Chlorella sp. to 52.08 x 106, DO from 1.7 mg/L to 5.9 mg/L, pH to 8.2, and temperature to 28.8°C. However, the BOD5 value is still very far above the quality standard so it does not meet the quality standard according to Government Regulation No. 22 of 2021 Class II and Class III concerning the implementation of environmental protection and management for fishing activities
Homoplastic Hypophysation of African Catfish (Clarias gariepinus, Burchell 1822) Using Catfish Pituitary Gland with Coconut Water as Extender Agent
This study aimed to evaluate the effects of coconut water as an extender agent on the reproductive variables of Clarias gariepinus. The study used 18 healthy broodstocks with body weight ranging from 300 g to 750 g. The four treatments used were: 100% diluted pituitary gland for T1, 75% coconut water and 25% diluted pituitary gland for T2, 50% coconut water and 50% diluted pituitary gland for T3, and 25% coconut water and 75% diluted pituitary gland for T4. T1 had the highest mean fecundity value with 33,366.67 eggs, followed by T3 with 33,416.67 eggs, while T2 had the lowest with 27,466.67 eggs. The GSI was highest in T1 at 12.96%, while T2 had the lowest at 10.69%. The fertilization rate was significantly different among treatments, with T1 having the highest rate of 95.94%, followed by T4 at 92.43%. T3 and 2 had rates of 88.26% and 87.14%, respectively. The hatchability rate was also significantly different among treatments, with T1 having the highest rate of 91.5%, followed by T4 at 84.1%. T3 had a hatchability rate of 76.2%, and T2 had the lowest hatchability rate of 73.1%. The water temperature was within the optimum range, but the pH fell short of the optimum range. Overall, the study suggests that using coconut water as an extender agent can improve fertilization and hatchability rates in C. gariepinus injected with pituitary gland extract
Relationship between the Productivity and Nutrient Profile of Bottom Soils of Selected Regular and Integrated Fish Ponds in Ibadan, Nigeria
Water quality management has been considered one of the most important aspects of pond aquaculture for many years, but less attention has been given to the management of pond bottom soil. The quality of pond bottom soils greatly impacts the productivity of ponds with respect to fish production. The objective of this study is to explain the nutrient profile of bottom soils of selected regular and integrated ponds in the Ibadan metropolis, Oyo State, Nigeria. Bottom soils and water samples of three regular and three integrated ponds in Ibadan metropolis, Nigeria were sampled. In each pond, soil samples were sampled from two different points at three depths each (inlet and outlet) of 0-10cm,10-20cm and 20-30cm. Soil samples were also analysed for; pH, organic carbon, organic matter, nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium. The productivity of the ponds was evaluated using the measured parameters in line with standard procedures. The data obtained were analyzed using descriptive statistics, one-way analysis of variance, correlation and regression analysis. The organic carbon of all the ponds indicated that they were all suitable for aquaculture production with average values ranging from 0.82% to 2.66%. Three of the ponds’ bottom soil were of mineral soils having medium organic carbon of mean values 1.81%, 1.73% and 2.66% for integrated pond 3, regular ponds 1 and 3 respectively while the three other ponds were of organic soils having high organic carbon concentration of mean values 1.06%,0.82% and 1.01% for integrated ponds 3and 2 and regular pond 2. The pond soils were all neutral except two of the regular ponds with average values ranging from 7.00 to 9.60. All the mean values of phosphorous in the soil indicated that the soils were of high productivity and highly suitable for aquaculture production. Mean soil phosphorous concentration values 0.33%, 0.30%, 0.26%, 0.27%, 0.28% and 0.34% of integrated ponds 1 to 3 and regular ponds 1-3 respectively showed that the ponds were highly suitable for fish culture with respect to ability to synthesize phytoplankton and zooplanktons. The organic carbon concentration and the phosphorous concentration of all the ponds showed high productivity. The pH and the nitrogen concentration of all the ponds showed high productivity. Generally, the evaluation of the ponds in line with the three standard procedures indicated that the integrated pond soils was more productive for fish culture than the regular pond soils
Assessment of Interstitial and Surface Water Quality of Ibaka Creek Rivers State, Nigeria: The Case of Artisanal Refinery Activities
The study examined how artisanal refinery activities affect interstitial and surface water quality along Ibaka Creek, Rivers State, Nigeria. A multi-meter was used to measure the temperature, pH, electrical conductivity (EC), salinity, and total dissolved solids. In addition to dissolved oxygen (DO), dissolved oxygen demand (BOD5) was measured with an Extech multimeter. All of the physicochemical parameters were within the limits of the acceptable limits (WHO, EPA, and SON). As a result, both surface and interstitial water in Ibaka Creeks showed variations in its EC, TDS, pH, temperature, salinity, BOD5, and DO values. However, surface water recorded higher EC (30.04±0.19 µS/m) and TDS (29.87±0.18 mg/L) values, while interstitial water showed a higher pH value of 7.25±0.07 and lower temperature values of 27.94±0.09°C. The surface water had a higher salinity (0.64±0.15 ppt), BOD5 of 3.36mg/L and a DO value of 4.61mg/L than interstitial water. BOD and pH values were not significantly different between surface water and interstitial water (p>0.05). There were the highest values recorded in November for surface and interstitial water, except for BOD5 values, which were highest in December. The lowest temperatures and pH were recorded in February, while the lowest levels of oxygen were recorded in April. The salinity and BOD5 levels were also lowest in March, while electrical conductivity and TDS levels were lowest in February. In March, salinity and BOD5 were the lowest, while electrical conductivity and TDS were the lowest. The seasonal variation and anthropogenic influences were attributed to fluctuations in parameters across the months. Evaluation of Moisture Content and Sensory Properties of Colored and Non-Colored Fish (Silver Carp, Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) Noodles during Storage
The study was done to evaluate moisture content and sensory properties of colored and non-colored noodles incorporated with different amount of fish (Silver carp, Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) mince during storage at room temperature (30-35○C) in two types of packaging conditions (sealed polyethylene packet and vacuum sealed packet). In addition, proximate composition, cooking time, and water absorption capacity were also investigated at initial stage. Boiled fish mince was incorporated with wheat flour and spices to prepare eight different samples namely CN (without fish mince, colorless), CC (without fish mince, colored), S1N (25% fish mince, colorless), S1C (25% fish mince, colored) S2N (30% fish mince, colorless), S2C (30% fish mince, colored) and S3N (35% fish mince, colorless) and S3C (35% fish mince, colored). No significant change in the moisture content of colored and non-colored fish noodles was found but moisture, protein, and fat content rose significantly with the increment of added amount of fish mince in the noodles. A significant decreasing trend was observed in the moisture content of the samples stored in sealed polyethylene packets during the 305 days of storage period whereas the moisture content of all the samples packed in vacuum sealed packets witnessed a non-significant change for the storage of 360 days. The color, flavor and texture of the products were acceptable up to 305 days in sealed polyethylene packets and 360 days in vacuum sealed packets. Food color had no remarkable effect on proximate composition, cooking time, water absorption capacity, and sensory characteristics of prepared noodles. Colorless noodles containing 35% fish mince was preferred by the panelists. So, both colored and non-colored fish noodles prepared with fish mince (up to 35%) can be stored at room temperature (30-35○C) in both sealed polyethylene packets and vacuum sealed packets for at least 10 months with acceptable moisture content and sensory properties. Vacuum sealed packaging provided the products with better protection against moisture loss throughout the storage period
