Predisposing Factors that Promote Prevalence of Heavy Metals Assimilation and Bioaccumulation in Aquatic Medium and amongst Fishes
The degree of heavy metals assimilation and bioaccumulation in fish tissues (muscles, gills, liver, and kidneys), amongst scale-less fishes- Chrysichthys macrotis, Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus, Clarias gariepinus and Heterobranchus longifilis, -scaly fishes- Cynoglossus senegalensis, Oreochromis aureus, O. niloticus, Lutjanus fulgens, Pomadasys rogeri, and Tilapia galilea, water columns and sediments, were investigated. Heavy metals assimilation and bioaccumulation varied among organisms with or without scales, tissue types, and fish location (water column & sediments) and pollution level. Fishes with scales had lower concentrations of heavy metals than scale- less fishes. The scalier the fish, the lower the metal assimilation and bioaccumulation. As expected, trace metals were generally lower in muscles than liver, and kidney. Liver had highest followed by kidney, gills and then muscles. Fish trophic level (water column or sediments) and water pollution levels affected heavy metal concentrations. Concentrations were always more in sediments than water column or tissues. The more polluted the water, the more the assimilation and accumulation of trace metals
Behavioural and Haematological Alterations in the African Catfish (Clarias gariepinus) Exposed to Varying Concentrations of Glyphosate
Extensive use of herbicides poses a serious threat to aquatic life due to runoff from treated fields. A static bioassay method was used to evaluate the toxicity of acute exposure to glyphosate on Clarias gariepinus behaviour and haematological parameters. Glyphosate was tested at varying concentrations (0.72, 1.44, 2.16, and 2.88 mg/l (control), 0.72, 1.44, 2.16, and 2.88 mg/l) for 96 hours in the laboratory. Significant (P < .05) dose-dependent behavioural and morphological changes of respiratory disturbance, erratic swimming, loss of equilibrium, mucous secretion, and mortality were recorded in the surviving fish. Erythrocyte (RBC), haemoglobin (Hb), packed cell volume (PCV) and leukocyte (WBC) values decreased significantly (P < .05) in treated fish as compared with controls. Mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular haemoglobin (MCH), and mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration (MCHC) were not significantly different (P >.05) between the treated and control fish. Insignificant dose-dependent changes in the counts of neutrophils, monocytes, basophils, and eosinophils were also induced by glyphosate. The variations seen in this study demonstrated that glyphosate had a detrimental effect on the health of the fish. Educating farmers on recommended modes for the administration of glyphosate-herbicides on farmlands should be implemented and enhanced
Growth Performance and Survival of Climbing Perch (Anabas testudineus Bloch) Raised in Conventional and Bioflocs System
The aim of this research is to analyze the performance of growth and survival of climbing perch (Anabas testudineus Bloch) which was raised in bioflocs and conventional systems. It investigated the difference in the initial size of the fry stocked with climbing perch has effect. The experimental design used in this study was a Factorial Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with 2 factors and 3 replications: Factor A: climbing perch aquaculture Systems; A1: climbing perch in conventional system of; A2: the climbing perch in bioflocs system; Factor B: Initial Size of fry Stocking; B1: fry size 3 ± 0.5cm; B2: fry size 5 ± 0.5cm and B3: fry size 7 ± 0.5cm. The research was conducted for 90 days with daily growth parameters (SGR), weight and length growth, survival rate, food conversion, flocsvolume density (FVD), and main water quality parameters (water temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen and dissolved ammonia).The results showed that the bioflocs system was able to increase the average growth in the range of 12-67% with an average of 29.73% when compared to conventional systems. The highest value for the daily growth rate or Specific Growth Rate (%/day) was for fry with a size of 7 cm in the bioflocs system (8,419%). The fry size of 3 ± 0.5cm in the bioflocs system had the highest difference in standard length (4.33 cm) while the highest average length during maintenance was the seed size of 7 ± 0.5 cm in the bioflocs system. The survival results of climbing perch fish during the study were based on the highest score on the seed size of 3 ± 0.5cm in the bioflocs system. The survival range of the bioflocs system is 94.89 - 99.67% and that of the conventional system is 82.00 - 94.26%. Thus the bioflocs system is able to increase survival in the range of 5-14% when compared to conventional systems. The bioflocs system is able to provide better feed efficiency than conventional systems in the range of 34-39%. The average value of floc volume density (FVD) in the bioflocs system is in the range of 5.35 – 8.16 ml/L, which is still ideal but can still be improved. Water temperature during the study period, air and water temperatures ranged from 28.54 to 28.71 (ºC), the degree of acidity in all treatments was in the range 6.34 – 7.27, dissolved oxygen levels were in the range 5.77 – 6.90 mg /L) while the average measurement results for ammonia levels (mg/L) were in the range of 0.49 – 0.57 mg/L. The temperature ranges in the studies on conventional and bioflocs systems are within the acceptable range for fish farming Water temperature during the study period, air and water temperatures ranged from 28.54 to 28.71 (ºC), the degree of acidity in all treatments was in the range 6.34 – 7.27, dissolved oxygen levels were in the range 5.77 – 6.90 mg /L) while the average measurement results for ammonia levels (mg/L) were in the range of 0.49 – 0.57 mg/L
Physical Characteristics of Biocomposite Edible Film Based on Starch and Nanochitosan with the Addition of Oil and Acids: A Review
Edible film is a type of edible packaging in the form of a thin layer to protect food products and can be decomposed naturally so that it can be an alternative to the use of plastic packaging. Edible film components consist of hydrocolloids (polysaccharides, proteins), lipid, or a combination of these materials with or without the addition of plasticizers. The physical characteristics of edible film that are commonly used are thickness, tensile strength, elongation, water vapor transmission rate, and solubility. Several studies have shown that the addition of fish oil as lipid to starch and nano-chitosan edible film can improve the physical characteristics of the film. The addition of a greater concentration of fish oil can increase the thickness value and decrease the water vapor transmission rate and water solubility of the edible film
Increasing the Nutritional Value of FISH Feed with the Addition of Eco Enzyme
Feed is one of the determinants of the success of cultivation activities. The nutritional and protein content of commercial feed has been determined, however, the protein content in the feed can still be increased. Eco enzyme is the result of fermentation from a mixture of sugar, organic fruit or vegetable residue, and water by utilizing probiotic activity which produces enzymes from organic waste. The purpose of this study was to analyze the increase in the nutritional value of fish feed with the addition of eco enzyme. Analysis of feed samples was carried out at the Laboratory of Nutrition and Animal Feed Science, Faculty of Agriculture, Lambung Mangkurat University, South Kalimantan. The treatment given was the addition of eco enzyme at different doses with the treatment of feed A (20 mL/kg feed), B feed (40 mL/kg feed), and C feed (60 mL/kg feed). The organic ingredients used to make Eco Enzyme are fruit peels sourced from mini markets and salad traders in the area around Banjarbaru City. The results of the chemical feed analysis test (proximate) which include: water content, ash content, protein content, fat content and fiber content. ased on the results of the analysis of feed samples with the addition of 60 mL/kg of feed eco enzyme, the value of the protein content can increase by 117.4% from 15% protein content to 32.71%. It contains a fat content value of 3.33% which is close to the SNI requirements for fish feed quality and reduces 69.6% of the fiber content of feed from 10% to 3.04%.%
Characteristics (Yield, Moisture Content, Water Absorption, Ph, and Organoleptic) of Catfishflour (Pangasius hypophthalmus)
Fish meal is a dry solid product, produced by removing most of the liquid and some or all of the fat contained in the body of the fish. This research aims to analyze the characteristics of catfish flour that is given preliminary treatment, namely steamed and boiled and control (without heating) before the drying process. This research is divided into 2 stages, namely phase I research on making fish meal from Patin Fish (Pangasius hypopthalmus) with 3 treatments, namely control, boiling, and steaming and phase II research, namely the test characteristics on catfish meal such as yield tests, organoleptic tests, absorption, water content, and pH.Based on the results of research on the characteristics of catfish flour obtained from the first treatment, control on fish meat before drying is as follows: flour yield 21.7 ± 0.54%; moisture content 5.9 %; absorbency 1.28 %; pH 5.93; and very pungent aromatic organoleptic character, coarse powder and brownish color. Thecharacteristics of catfish flour obtained from the second treatment, namely boiling on fish meat before drying, are as follows: flour yield 12.33%; moisture content 1.8%;absorbency 1.6%; pH5.8; and fish-scented organoleptic character in general, semi-fine, yellowish in color. Effectiveness of Light Using on the Number of Giant Lift Net Catches in Barru District, Indonesia
Aims: This study aims to determine the effectiveness of the use of light on the catches of the Giant lift net.
Place and Duration of Study: The research was conducted for six months, from March to August 2022. The research was carried out in the waters of Barru Regency, South Sulawesi Province.
Methodology: Data collection was carried out using survey and interview methods as well as literature studies. Field data collection is carried out by participating in direct operations with fishermen. Primary data includes catch (main catch), data on the duration of the stages of catching (setting time, towing time, and hauling time). The data collected from the interviews are the catch (species, kg/trip, tail/trip) and the trip period. Sampling of the catch is done by taking the fish caught by the Giant lift net per trip. Furthermore, data regarding the description of the Giant lift net was carried out by means of interviews, observations and direct measurements of fishing gear. Secondary data (desk study) will be obtained from an inventory of official publications and fisheries statistical data from the local government.
Results: The effectiveness of using the number of lamps and the wattage of the lamps is directly proportional to the catch, the more and brighter the LED lights are used, the more catches will be. The most optimal watt size used in the operation of the Giant lift net is 300-400 watts. The color of the light that is good for using the Giant lift net operation is white
Compliance Analysis of Indonesian Field Standard Classification (KBLI 10293) in the Freezing Shrimp Industry in Banjarmasin City
The current compliance condition of the Fish Processing Unit in the City of Banjarmasin was reviewed for 3 shrimp freezing companies based on the Indonesian Business Field Standard Classification standard (KBLI 10293). The aim of the study was to analyze the compliance level of the frozen shrimp industry in Banjarmasin City, South Kalimantan compared with the Indonesian field standard classification (KBLI 10293). This research was conducted in three shrimp freezing industries in the City of Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan, namely: PT. Kalimantan Fisheries, PT. Wirontono Baru and PT. Yubel Utama Seafood Indonesia (YUSI). To answer the research objectives, the data analysis technique was used a percentage descriptive analysis whose assessment refers to the Marine Fisheries Government Number 6 of 2021, which is to systematically describe facts or characteristics of the field population specifically and factually from the data that has been collected. Descriptive analysis of percentages was carried out by measuring research variables using the Likert\u27s scale for measuring data in the form of social or individual characteristics when conducting questions and answers in the field presented in the form of a questionnaire. The compliance level of the frozen shrimp industry in Banjarmasin City, South Kalimantan based on the Likert\u27t scale criteria. Also, the total compliance level of the frozen shrimp industry in Banjarmasin City, South Kalimantan was very obedient (83-86%) based on the KBLI, 10293 Compliance assessment criteria
The Immunity Performance of Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) after the Exposure of Botanical Insecticide with Azadirachtin Active Ingredient
This study aims to determine the exposure effect of insecticide with the azadirachtin active ingredient on the immunity of nile tilapia. This research was conducted in March and August for the preliminary test and September-October 2022 for the main test at Ciparanje Inland Aquaculture Hatchery, Padjadjaran University. This study used the experimental method of Complete Randomized Design with five treatments and three repeats. The nile tilapia used is 6-7 cm. The treatment used is exposure to insecticide with different doses, namely A (0 ppm), B (26.25 ppm), C (52.5 ppm), D (78.75 ppm), E (105 ppm). Parameters observed included red blood cell count, white blood cell count, feed response, shock response, and macroscopic symptoms up to day 14. Red blood cell and white blood cell data were analyzed in a quantitative descriptive manner. Data on feed response, shock response, and macroscopic symptoms were carried out in a qualitative descriptive manner. Water quality data were analyzed in a quantitative descriptive manner. The results showed that exposure of insecticide with azadirachtin active ingredient interfered fish health by increasing white blood cell count, lowering red blood cell count, disrupting feed response and shock response. The higher the concentration of insecticide given, the more it affects the immunity of tilapia. Treatment without the addition of insecticides is the best treatment in this study
Survival, Growth, Meristic and Morphometric Characteristics of Hybrids Between Black and White Nile Tilapia Strains
Tilapia is a commodity that has high economic value. The demand for tilapia continues to increase from year to year. In order to improve the genetic quality of fish, a hybridization program is carried out so that they have advantages becomes superior and good, growth rate, disease resistance and bad environment, and food utilization efficiency compared to their parents. Therefore, this research was conducted at Wanayasa Marine Conservation Service Unit (SPKPD) with A. White Tilapia (♂) x Black Tilapia (♀), B. Black Tilapia (♂) x White Tilapia (♀), C. White Tilapia (♂) x White Tilapia (♀), D. Black Tilapia (♂) x Black Tilapia (♀).This research include the preparation of containers and mains test fish, spawning, fertilization, hatching, maintenance of larvae and fry up to 90 days of age. Then measure the parameters such as survival, growth, meristic and morphometric characteristics. The results of the study showed that the highest specific survival and growth were in treatment B of 92.67%; 19.68%. Morphometric characteristics obtained the highest results in the hybrid strain Black Tilapia (♂) x White Tilapia (♀) with a total length of 11.58 cm, head length of 3.21 cm, standard length of 9.32 cm and body height of 3.37 cm. While the highest meristic characteristics were obtained in Treatment B = D.XVI-XVII : 13-14 P. 12-13 V. I : 5 A. III : 9-11 C. II : 15-16 LL. 26-27. This marked with the formula D for dorsal, P for pectoral, V for ventral, A for anal, C for caudal, LL for lateral line. While the Roman numerals indicate the number of hard radii, the Arabic numerals denote the weak radii
