Natural Spawning Technique of Koi Fish (Cyprinus carpio) in the Ciparanje Inland Fisheries Area, Sumedang, Indonesia
The Ciparanje inland aquaculture area has emerged as a hub for breeding ornamental fish, with koi fish being a prominent species. The increasing demand for koi fish has led to a surge in koi aquaculture businesses. What sets koi fish apart from some other fish species is their ability to breed throughout the year, unaffected by specific seasons. However, in their natural habitat, koi fish typically spawn at the onset of the rainy season, triggered by the enticing aroma of the soil. The growth of koi fish is influenced by various factors, including fish species, genetic characteristics, feeding efficiency, disease resistance, and environmental conditions such as water and feed quality, as well as stocking density. To ensure the production of top-quality koi fish fry, it is crucial to employ the appropriate spawning techniques. In this study, a participative approach was employed to investigate and report on the natural spawning procedures of koi fish in the Ciparanje inland aquaculture area, managed by Padjadjaran University. The natural spawning method implemented in this area encompasses several crucial processes, including the preparation of spawning ponds, selection of breeding stock, egg hatching, and larvae rearing. A total of 90,175 eggs were collected from the examined koi broodstock during the spawning activities, and an impressive 80% of these eggs successfully hatched. The calculated Hatching Rate (HR) reached 96.5%, indicating a high level of achievement in the hatching of koi fish larvae
Gonad Maturity and Fecundity of Indian Mackerel (Rastellinger kanagurta) in North Gorontalo Waters, Indonesia
Indian mackerel (Rastellinger kanagurta) is one of the fish that can be caught by fishermen in North Gorontalo waters. Excessive fishing without regard to the condition of the fish will cause a decrease in the quality and quantity of fish resources. Estimation of size at first maturity is one way to determine population development in water. This study aims to determine the relationship between the level of gonad maturity and the fecundity of Indian mackerel in North Gorontalo waters. This research was conducted in October-December 2021 at the Kwandang Archipelago Fishing Port. The level of maturity of the gonads was observed morphologically and the determination of fecundity was observed using volumetric and gravimetric methods. The maturity level of Indian Mackerel fish in North Gorontalo waters is dominated at level 1. The highest fecundity is 14,800 eggs and the lowest is 5,000 eggs. The relationship between the level of gonad maturity and fecundity is directly proportional, if the gonadal maturity value is high, the fecundity value will also be higher. The spawning season for Indian mackerel in North Gorontalo waters does not take place in October-December, this is characterized by low fecundity. Based on the gonadal maturity values every month, the peak spawning of Indian mackerel (Rastellinger kanagurta) allegedly occurred shortly after the highest GSI values

Aluminium foil is a thin material made of aluminum metal used for packaging. Aluminium foil has good properties for packaging food products, including hermetic, flexible, opaque, impervious to moisture and water, non-flammable, and does not absorb other materials or substances. Widely, aluminium foil is used as a coating, especially for packaging food which must be protected from gas, moisture, odors, and light so that it can better maintain the durability of the packaged product. Fishery products need to be packaged to extend shelf life and maintain product quality. Several studies have shown that the use of aluminium foil packaging can extend the shelf life compared to other packaging
Overview of Lemna sp. in Aquaculture: Flavonoids for Boosting the Immune System in Fish
This study aims to provide information that the content of flavonoids in Lemna sp. can be an effort to control disease in fish. The research method used is a quantitative descriptive method. The conclusion of the research is to show the ability of Lemna sp. can be used in the prevention of disease in fish. Lemna sp. has immune-modulatory properties, namely the ability to increase phagocytosis so that it can increase the body\u27s immunity in fish. Flavonoid content in Lemna sp. has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimutagenic, and anticarcinogenic properties coupled with their capacity to modulate cellular enzyme function. Flavonoids also have the potential to stimulate the immune system
The Social Characteristics of Fisherman Communities in Cangkol Village, Cirebon, Indonesia
The social mapping is intended to map social characteristics, as well as to analyze the driving and inhibiting factors of the fishing community in Cangkol Village, using a survey method with a questionnaire and analyzed descriptively. The research was conducted in April–June 2023. The fishing community of Kampung Cangkol is a community with the majority of middle-aged individuals graduating from elementary school, Muslim, with Cirebonese ethnicity who still preserve local traditions and wisdom. Fishermen\u27s wives have a double role as being in charge of domestic affairs and helping fishermen earn a living. There is a patron-client relationship between fishermen and middlemen as the main access to capital in the fishing business. The upper layer in the fishing community of Cangkol Village is community leaders, the middle layer is skipper fishermen, and the lower layer is the Ship\u27s Crew (ABK). The fishing community in Cangkol Village are fishermen with a traditional fishing unit. The driving factors in the fishing effort of the Cangkol Village fishing community are the preservation of cultural manifestations in the community, the fishermen\u27s wives\u27 dual roles, kinship, and social organizations. The inhibiting factors in the fishing business are weather, age structure, level of education, the existence of middlemen, and the use of technology that is still traditional
Growth, Survival and Cost-benefit Analyses of Nutrient Rich Small Indigenous Species in Carp Polyculture System under Barind Area in Rajshahi District of Bangladesh
This study was conducted in Tanore upazila (sub district) of Rajshahi district, Bangladesh for a period of six months from July 2019 to December 2019. Investigation was carried into the economics of polyculture of Indian major carps with small indigenous fish species (SIS) Shing (H. fossilis), Magur (C. batrachus), and Pabda (O. pabda). The species composition was carps with shing (T1), carps with Magur (T2), carps with Pabda (T3) and only carps (T4). The economic feasibility of four different combinations was analyzed on the basis of the expenditure incurred and total return from sale price of fish in the local market. The net benefits per hectare from 6 months culture period for T1, T2, T3 and T4 were Bangladesh currency (Taka) as BDT. 635730.42, 805548.25, 580948.95 and 291489.07, respectively which largely reflected the gross fish production levels of 7680.42 ± 6.68, 8324.94 ± 16.64, 7581.13 ± 24.94 and 6344.55 ± 10.30 kg ha-1. However, carp polyculture with Magur (T2) provided highest benefit (BDT. 805548.25 ha-1), followed by carps-shing polyculture (BDT. 635730.42/ha-1), carps-Pabda polyculture (BDT. 580948.95 ha-1) and only carps (BDT. 291489.07 ha-1). BCR (Benefit Cost Ratio) was obtained highest in Carp-Magur polyculture, followed by carp-shing and carp-Pabda polyculture systems. So, Carp-Magur polyculture may be better as it has ensured better production of protein enriched SIS Magur and also economic point of view and this system is encouraging for rural people because they would get Magur regularly for consumption and carps as a cash crop
Effect of Giving Purple Sweet Potato (Ipomea batatas L.) Extract in Feed to Increase the Color and Growth of Koi Fish (Cyprinus carpio)
Purple sweet potato has the potential as a feed mixture ingredient to improve the color of ornamental fish, but it is not known how much the dose of purple sweet potato test extract in feed can increase the color of koi fish. Therefore, a study was carried out with the aim of knowing the effect of giving purple sweet potato extract in feed on color quality, total carotenoids, growth and survival of koi fish. This study used a completely randomized design consisting of five treatments and three replications, with the treatment of purple sweet potato extract in the feed. Giving purple sweet potato extract in commercial feed consisting of P0 (control) = without giving purple sweet potato extract, P1 = purple sweet potato extract 100 ml kg-1, P2 = purple sweet potato extract 150 ml kg-1, P3 = sweet potato extract purple 200 ml kg-1, and P4 = purple sweet potato extract 250 ml kg-1. The parameters measured in this study were color quality, growth and survival. The results showed that the feeding of purple sweet potato extract had a significant (p<.05) effect on the parameters of color quality, growth and survival, and not significant (p>.05) on the total carotenoids of koi fish. Thus, to improve the quality of color, growth and survival of koi fish, it is better to use feed with purple sweet potato extract of 250 mg kg-1 of feed
Heavy Metal Assessment in Water, Sediment and Biota from Ennore Creek and Vellar Estuary, Southeast India
The impact of anthropogenic activities on the accumulation of heavy metals in water, sediment and fish of both Ennore creek and Vellar estuary were observed in this study. Water and sediment sample were collected from both sampling stations and fish was collected just from only Ennore creek. Sediment and fish samples were subjected to a total digestion technique (HNO3 – HCl – HF conc.) and analysed using a spectrophotometer. Four elements Cu, Cd, Zn and Pb (trace elements) were determined. Heavy metal concentration of Ennore creek was significantly higher than the concentration of samples from Vellar estuary. The order of metal levels in water sample from Ennore creek is Cu > Zn > Cd > Pb and the sequence order of Vellar estuary water sample is Zn > Pb > Cu > Cd. The concentration of heavy metals in the sediment samples of Ennore creek showed in the following sequential order: Zn > Cu > Pb > Cd and the sequence order of Vellar estuary: Zn > Cd > Cu > Pb. In the Ennore creek, the accumulation of Zn in the muscle tissue is observed in the order, O. mosambique (7.3mg/g), M. cephalus (7.13mg/g) and A. djedaba (6.76 mg/g). M. cephalus showed high levels of Cu (5.25 mg/g) followed by A. djedaba (4.63mg/g) and O. mosambique (4.24mg/g). Based on the overall average of heavy metals present in different organs of the fish samples, trend of metal accumulation in different organs are observed as follows: Cu: Muscle > liver > gills and Zn: Muscle > liver > gills
Application of Fragmented Extracellular Self-DNA (esDNA) Concept as an Alternative Prophylactic Approach against Vibrio parahaemolyticus and Vibrio harveyi Infection in Brine Shrimp Artemia
The purpose of this study was to investigate species specific inhibitory effects of esDNA isolated from two conspecific organisms: Vibrio parahaemolyticus (VP) and Vibrio harveyi (VH), and to assess the functional role of esDNA to enhance the survival rate of Artemia sp. In an in vitro study, nine doses of Extracellular self-DNA of Vibrio parahaemolyticus (esDNAVP) and Vibrio harveyi (esDNAVH) were used as the target for the challenge test with the conspecific bacteria. In an in vivo study, the protective effect of esDNA was then tested in nauplii of the brine shrimp Artemia at various priming times and concentrations of esDNA under gnotobiotic conditions prior to challenge with VP and VH at the concentration of 5 × 105 CFU mL-1. The results from in vitro study showed that the use of esDNAVP at levels of 24.02 and 48.05 ng µl-1 and esDNAVH at concentrations of 13.33 and 26.67 ng µl-1 were able to inhibit the growth of the conspecific species when added to the culture medium at the concentration level of 5 × 105 CFU mL-1. The results from in vivo study showed that the use of 24.02; 48.05 and 72.07 ng µl-1 of esDNAVP as well as the use of 13.33; 26.67 and 40.00 ng µl-1 of esDNAVH inhibited the growth of VP and VH and enhanced the survival rate of Artemia sp compared to the control treatment (P<0.05). Taken together, we confirmed that esDNA obtained from the extraction and random fragmentation from esDNAVP and esDNAVH, produces a species-specific inhibitory effect on the same species and can serve as a potential alternative strategy for disease control to deliver the functionality of esDNA to the fish and shrimp
Seasonal Variations in Surface Water Quality in River Njoro and Lake Nakuru, Kenya
Water pollution from rivers and lakes has resulted in serious environmental issues on a global scale. The public\u27s growing concern over the decline in river and lake water quality makes it more important than ever to assess the water quality of these bodies of water over a prolonged period of time. During the rainy and dry seasons of 2022, 120 water samples were collected from 5 monitoring stations located within River Njoro and Lake Nakuru. The samples underwent physicochemical analysis of selected water parameters, which included salinity, temperature, pH, turbidity, total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), electric conductivity (EC), and total dissolved solids (TDS). The results were compared using the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) of Kenya\u27s guidelines and the results showed that the water quality of the Njoro river and Lake Nakuru fluctuated with the seasons, particularly in the lower water column of river Njoro. The quality parameters had the following values; EC values range between 73.33 ± 0.55 μs/cm - 533.33 ± 0.64 - μs/cm, respectively for both seasons; Salinity values range from 0.085 ± 0.02 ppt - 2.59 ± 0.03 ppt; pH values were between 8.8 – 9.3; Temperature was 23.69 ± 0.07 °C – 14.22± 0.07°C; Turbidity varied significantly – 13.95 ± 0.27 NTU - 36.03 ± 0.35 NTU; TDS between 46.67 ± 0.11 ppm- 243.33 ± 0.04 ppm; TN ranges between 5.97 ± 3.24 mg/L - 8.57 ± 3.18 mg/L and TP 7.49 ± 1.7-9.41 ± 1.84 mg/L in the dry and rainy seasons, for River Njoro and Lake Nakuru respectively. This study showed that the degree to which human activity affects water quality varies with the season. Therefore, most of these factors should be considered while controlling rivers downstream in order to ensure the health of aquatic life, also it is essential to increase lake water quality monitoring and regulate human activity. Additionally, the results revealed that water pollution resulted primarily from domestic wastewater, agricultural runoff and industrial effluents
