    Using of Somatic Embryogenesis for Improving Bolting-resistant New Local Cultivars of Heirloom Carrot Cultivars (Daucus carota) Under Egyptian Conditions

    Foreign carrot varieties with desirable morphological traits for the local and global markets must bloom in low temperatures for a long period of time in Egypt, but these climatic conditions are not available for flowering and seed production for these varieties, so it is common to import carrot seeds from abroad. On the other hand, Local cultivars bloom earlier when planted later than the advised date. Due to the heat, it cannot be grown throughout the summer. Pushing the somatic cells to divide and create a new polarity is necessary for the induction of tissues in the lab and the creation of somatic embryos. It was shown that several auxins play a crucial role in the development of these embryos, particularly 2, 4-D (2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid). This experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of five procedures in a tissue culture laboratory using two concentrations of 2, 4-D at a concentration of 2.5 and 5 mg/l for indirect somatic embryos induction from sexual embryos produced from culturing carrot  (Daucus carota) seeds of Carrot cv. Kuroda (an heirloom variety). The results confirmed by scanning electron microscopy showed that it is crucial to compare the various processes used to create somatic Embryogenesis to assess their effectiveness. The four stages of somatic embryos, globular, heart, torpedo, and cotyledon form, were observed on the formed callus. The highest amounts of callus fresh weight, the number of globular-shaped stage embryos, the number of heart-shaped stage embryos, the number of torpedo-shaped stage embryos, the number of cotyledon-shaped stage embryos, and the number of seedlings had been recorded in the media supplemented with 2, 4-D at a concentration of 5 mg. This study was able to produce somatic embryos of the foreign carrot cv. Kuroda, Plants obtained from somatic embryos are included in selection programs to produce varieties resistant to early flowering under Egyptian conditions. These results constitute a step in the way in the field of improving bolting-resistant new local cultivars of heirloom carrot cultivars (Daucus  carota) under Egyptian conditions. &nbsp

    Growth Performance and Survival of Malabar Spinach (Basella alba) Applied with Different Volume of Seawater

    Aims: The study focused on growth performance and survival of Malabar Spinach (Basella alba) applied with different volume of seawater, in Brgy. Bolila, Malita, Davao Occidental. Study Design: A experimental research design was employed in the study to determine indicators that were formulated to know the survival, number leaves and growth performance of the Malabar Spinach (Basella alba). Completely randomized design technique was employed for data gathering. (ANOVA) for analyzing. Mean, percentage and average frequency used in analyzing the findings of the data. Place and Duration of Study: The study was conducted between April 14, 2021 and May 31, 2021. Methodology: The experiment was arranged completely randomized design with three replicates for each treatment. There was one plant in each pot and five treatments in each replicate. CRD (Complete Random Design) with (5) treatments and replicates of three (3). The treatment was the following: Treatment 1 – tap water, Treatment 2 – 5ml seawater, Treatment 3 – 10ml seawater and 10ml tap water, Treatment 4 – 15ml seawater and 15 tap water, Treatment 5 – 20 ml seawater and 20 ml tap water. Results: Overall growth performance of Malabar Spinach showed that treatment 5 gained the highest value of mean, with 150 pots in terms of final increment on the Growth (height). In terms of number of leaves on the Growth of Malabar Spinach vegetable, treatment 5 obtained the highest value of mean in replicate 3, and treatment 1 which exhibited lowest value of mean. In terms of Survival Rate of Malabar Spinach (Basella alba), treatment 5 obtained the highest value of mean in sampling period with the corresponding final growth of effect with different ratio treatment of sea H2O samples and common water samples. Based on the results on the effect of seawater on the survival rate of Malabar Spinach, the result showed that treatments obtained the highest value of mean in terms of growth. In terms of number of leaves, Treatment 1 (tap water) obtained the highest value of mean. In terms of Survival, Treatment 1 obtained the highest value of mean Conclusion: The result showed that treatments obtained the highest value of mean in terms of growth. In terms of number of leaves, Treatment 1 (tap water) obtained the highest value of mean. In terms of Survival, Treatment 1 obtained the highest value of mean. Based on the statistical One Way ANOVA, the results revealed that there is a statistically significant difference of growth performance of Malabar Spinach from the six treatments. The result showed that treatment 5 was the highest value of mean from the sampling period given. The results also revealed that there is no significant difference on the number of leaves, length and survival of Malabar Spinach vegetable as applied with different volume of seawater in six sampling of the study

    Climate Control and Irrigation Automation Systems in Turkish Greenhouses: A Comparative Study

    Today's modern greenhouse agriculture draws attention with its intensive plant production capacity and industrially advanced structure in which soilless agriculture technology is used. Computer, microprocessor-controlled information processing and automation systems are needed for the effective management and operation of greenhouses. In order to meet the demands according to the plant species planned to be produced in soilless modern greenhouses; Equipment such as signal-sensing, heating, ventilation, shading, irrigation, fertilization, fogging-cooling, carbon dioxide fertilization and greenhouse general climate control system are needed. According to the needs of the plant, sub-equipment (suitable for obtaining the correct climate conditions desired in the greenhouse) such as roof windows, heating, irrigation, cooling, shading, fan ventilation should work according to the signals coming from the sensors. In this study, the data of 4 different commercial automation systems (namely Priva, Hortimax, Hoogendoorn and Karaca) in 5 greenhouse enterprises in different parts of Turkey were examined and screenshots were obtained. The data obtained were compared with each other and evaluated in terms of ease of use, performance, measured elements, capacity etc.  This research will provide added value to the greenhouse economy of countries in the next stages of undercover agriculture, as it will serve to understand greenhouse automation and subsequently to develop new systems. It will also be helpful to the greenhouse investors to make the right choice while choosing a greenhouse automation system

    Assessment of the Effect of Garcinia kola (Clusiaceae) on the Carbon Sequestration Capacity and Productivity of Cocoa (Theobroma cacao L) in Cocoa-Based Agroforestry Systems

    Aims: Ivorian cocoa production reaching 2 million ton annually at the expense of the forest reserve, and an annual deforestation rate around 2.78%. The integration of agroforestry into cocoa plantations appears to be a suitable approach to combating deforestation of the remaining forest reserves and restoring the degraded cocoa landscape. The choice of species is the key to the success of this program. Our objective was to evaluate the interaction between Garcinia kola and cocoa in traditional agroforestry systems. Study Design: Around each Garcinia Kola tree identified in the orchard, two curves lines with radii of 10 and 20 m respectively were delimited in order to assess the interaction of Garcinia Kola on the cocoa tree according to their proximity to Garcinia Kola. Place and Duration of Study: The study was conducted at Gueyo and Buyo in cocoa-based agroforestry systems in western Côte d'Ivoire.  from June 2020 to November 2021. Methodology: The influence of Garcinia Kola on cocoa trees was assessed by measuring the biomass and carbon sequestration rate of Garcinia kola and cocoa trees. The productivity of cocoa trees and Garcinia kola was also determined. Results: Our results showed that Garcinia kola trees have an influence on the density and yield of cocoa trees. Cocoa trees close to Garcinia Kola trees within a 10 m radius showed low density and low pod production compared to those within a 20 m radius. Meanwhile, cocoa biomass and carbon sequestration levels were higher in the 10 m radius than the 20 m radius. This study has shown that associated cocoa and Garcinia kola stands make different contributions depending on their proximity. Conclusion: This complementarity in terms of carbon sequestration capacity and productivity between Garcinia Kola and cocoa is an asset that can be exploited for Cocoa agroforestry system to improve the sustainable production system and restore the cocoa landscape

    Assessing Agricultural Practices and Plant Protection Methods in Rupnagar District, Punjab, India

    Aims: The purpose of this research is to analyze plant protection systems and agricultural practices in Punjab, India's Rupnagar District, in order to provide insights into nutrient management, seed rates, crop diversity, mechanization, and their implications. Conclusion: The study emphasizes the significance of improved mechanization, crop diversity, and sustainable farming techniques in Rupnagar, Punjab, to promote future agricultural development. Methodology: The study employed a mixed-methods approach, combining field surveys and structured interviews with 120 farmers across six villages in Rupnagar District, Punjab, India. Data on crop types, seed rates, machinery usage, and nutrient management were collected. Random sampling ensured representativeness, providing comprehensive insights into agricultural practices and challenges in the region. Place and Duration of Study: Villages of Rupnagar district, Punjab (Primary place) and Department of Agriculture sciences, Chandigarh university, Gharuan (Secondary place), between August 2023 and September 2023 Results: According to the data, the two main crops grown in the research areas were rice and wheat. Among the various degrees of mechanization observed, tractors were the most frequently visible piece of equipment. Seed rate management varied, and some farmers used more seed than was recommended. The data revealed a diversity of nutrient management approaches, as well as a proclivity for urea overuse. These findings offer insight on how complex the farming methods in the area are. Study Design: A mixed-methods methodology is used in the study design. It combines field surveys, interviews, and data analysis to extensively analyze agricultural practices in Rupnagar District, Punjab, India, including crop diversification, mechanization, and the use of plant protection strategies

    Influence of Chicken Manuer Compost on Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L.) Field Production in the South Cameroon Region

    The objective of the present field work in southern Cameroon was to test the effect of chicken dung compost on growth parameters and yield of cowpea. Two cowpea varieties (Lori and Komcalle) and four treatments (T= control; C= compost; CF= chemical fertilizer; CCF= mixture of compost and chemical fertilizer) were used in a completely randomized block design with three replications. Seed emergence rate, height, number of leaves, leaf area, crown diameter, number of nodules per plant and grain yield were evaluated. The results show that the Komcalle variety recorded an emergence rate of 94.85% and the Lori variety a washout rate of 91%. At 60 DAS, the chicken droppings compost shows the optimum values on height of (60.6±11.73 and 63.93±9.39 cm), number of nodules (73.63±1.60 and 72.7±1.62 nodules) and number of leaves (76.13±23and 60.41±18 leaves) for Lori and Komcalle variety respectively. The best seed yields were provided by chicken droppings compost (230±3.7 and 243±2 kg/ha) for Lori and Komcalle varieties respectively, compared to synthetic chemical fertilizer which recorded values of 217±4.7 and 214±2 kg/ha for Lori and Komcalle respectively. Based on the results, it appears that chicken dung compost is beneficial for cowpea cultivation due to improved growth and yield in the Southern Cameroon region

    Identification of Egyptian Mangrove Species Based on DNA Barcoding

    Aims: Mangroves are woody trees or shrubs that grow in the intertidal zone and are distributed along tropical and subtropical coasts. These plants are resilient to various environmental challenges; they are also one of the most efficient terrestrial and coastal ecosystem for carbon fixation and storage. In recent years, mangrove reforestation has attracted much attention as a strategy to reduce the effects of climate change. In Egypt, there are two types of mangroves, Rhizophora mucronata and Avicennia marina, between 30°N and 30°S of the equator. Mangrove management presents a difficult task, particularly when it comes to managing molecular mangroves for long-term sustainability. With the impact of human activity on mangrove ecosystems increasing each year, molecular research on mangrove correlates remains to be conducted. For this reason, using DNA barcoding technology to quickly identify species, mangrove ecosystems may be protected. Methodology: In this work, the two Egyptian mangrove species were assessed through morphological, cytological, and molecular approaches. Two universal DNA barcodes, rbcL and ITS, were examined to identify their efficacy for Egyptian mangrove species identification and phylogenetic reconstruction. Results: According to pairwise alignments, the rbcL region had the highest level of variability (73.2%), whereas the ITS region was the least variable (11.96%). The selected Egyptian mangrove species can potentially be distinguished by barcoding loci rbcL and ITS due to the existence of distinctive variable sites

    Improvement of Productivity and Quality of Nepalese Tomato Genotypes Using Black Polyethylene Film as Mulching Material

    An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of black plastic mulch on yield and other associated characters of promising tomato genotypes developed by the National Horticulture Research Centre, Nepal at the Directorate of Agricultural Research, Tarahara, Nepal, during the winter season of 2019. Nine tomato genotypes (HRDTOM 011, HRD 109, HRDTOM 035, HRDTOM 080, HRDTOM 079, HRDTOM 084, HRDTOM 085, HRDTOM 086, and Pusa Ruby as a check) were evaluated in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. Genotypes were transplanted 60 cm apart. Analysis of variance showed significant differences for marketable fruits and yield per plant, average fruit weight, total marketable and unmarketable fruit yield, and total fruit yield. Among the tested genotypes, HARDTOM 011 developed the highest (174) number of marketable fruits per plant with the lowest (12.92 g) individual average fruit weight. In contrast, HRDTOM 080 produced the lowest (36) number of marketable fruits per plant with the highest (49.70 g) individual fruit weight.  HRD 109 and Pusa Ruby provided the highest (69.74 t ha-1) and the lowest (38.51 t ha-1) marketable fruit yields, respectively. The highest total fruit yield was also obtained from the HRD 109. Similarly, HRDTOM 085 and HRDTOM 035 had the highest total soluble solids and fruit size, respectively. Firmness of the fruit and pH content did not differ among the genotypes. With the same genotypes and location (Tarahara), a 98% greater yield demonstrated that tomato production may be significantly boosted with the use of polyethylene film as a mulching medium in winter tomato production in Nepal

    Composition and Nutrition of Wild Bees in Solanum melongena L. Agroecosystems in Pune, Maharashtra, India

    Eggplant, (Solanum melongena L.), also called aubergine or Guinea squash, in the nightshade family (Solanaceae) is an economically important crop in India. We investigated the significance of Solanum melongena pollen in the diet of wild bees found in agroecosystems by examining pollen on the bees using a pollen load analysis and a nutritive analysis. We selected five agricultural sites that cultivate S. melongena near Pune, Maharashtra, India. At each site, over a two-year period, we sampled the wild bees that visited mature flowers. We sampled pollen from mature flowers and also from the bodies of the bee specimens. The pollen grains from the bees were observed under a light microscope and a scanning electron microscope. They were counted using a Neubauer chamber and the pollen probability index for each bee species was calculated. The nutritive value of S. melongena pollen was estimated by extracting and characterising their proteins using liquid chromatography mass-spectrometry. Protein peptides sequences were extracted from the NCBI protein database to examine their essential amino acids. We collected 324 bees representing 11 species in three families involved in S. melongena pollination. Apis florea and A. cerana were the most abundant bees that visited S. melongena flowers. Pollen load size is highly variable ranging between few thousand to 134146 pollen grains per bee. However, the pollen probability index indicated a high degree of specificity to S. melongena pollen. S. melongena has high pollen protein content and a total of 10 different proteins were identified that are important for plant cell activities as well as the nourishment of pollinators. Further proteomic characterization of the indicated that nearly half the essential amino acids played and nutrient role in the bees. This study highlights that nutrititive composition of S. melongena pollen and highlights its potential to play a significant role in wild bee diets

    Allelopathic Effects of Conyza canadensis Water Extract on Seed Germination and Seedling Growth

    In order to investigate the effects of allelo-pathic substances of Conyza canadensis on seed germination and seedlings, this study was designed to explore the allelopathic effects of Conyza canadensis water extract (CCE) on pakchoi, spinach and lettuce. Germination rates of three crops (pakcholi, spinach, and lettuce) during the seed germination, root length, seedling height, and fresh weight of two crops (pakcholi and lettuce) during  the seedling were measured under different concentrations of CCE treatment (20, 40, 60, 80, 100 g/L). The allelopathic effect index was also calculated. The results showed that CCE had a varying degree of inhibitory effect on the germination rate of the seeds of the three crops. Spinach and lettuce have significant allelopathic effects from C. canadensis. At higher concentration of CCE, the germination rate of spinach and lettuce significantly decreased (P<0.01). After germination, the root length, seedling height, and fresh weight of the crop were measured, and the allelopathic effects were also calculated. It was found that the CCE had a significant inhibitory effect on root length, but it showed a promoting effect on seedling height and fresh weight of pakchoi, and CCE had a "low promotion-high inhibition" effect on seedling height and fresh weight of lettuce
