    Growth analysis of fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum L.) under various levels of farmyard manure and phosphorus

    Field investigations were carried out during winter (rabi) season of 1996-97 and 1997-98 to study the effect of different levels of farmyard manure and phosphorus on growth of two fenugreek genotypes in sandy loam soils. The results indicated that genotype NLM was significantly superior to HM-65 in terms of plant height, LAI, LAD CGR and dry matter accumulation at all stages of crop growth, except at 30 DAS. These growth parameters in the genotype NLM resulted in higher seed yield. Plant height, LAI, LAD, CGR and dry matter accumulation were significantly higher with increase of FYM upto 15 t ha-1 at all stages of crop growth, except at 30 DAS. Seed yield was also enhanced significantly with the FYM up to 15 t ha-1. Increasing levels of phosphorus upto 40 kg ha-1 significantly increased the growth parameters and yield of fenugreek. &nbsp

    An induced detenninate mutant in fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum L.)

    A determinate mutant was isolated from a population of 400 plants of fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum L.) in the M2 generation raised from 200 seeds of Rmt 1 (indeterminate variety) treated with ethyl methane sulphonate (EMS) 0.10% for 4 h. Random samples from all M2 populations (except the mutant) were advanced to M3 generation. The appearance of one determinate type in a sample of 798 plants indicated that the trait is monogenic. This mutant was grown along with Rmt 1 and UM 305 (spontaneous mutant for similar growth habit). There were significant differences among genotypes for plant height, number of pods per plant, seed yield per plant and aphid infestation. The study indicated that the performance of the mutant could be brought on par with the checks following selection for desired economic traits. &nbsp

    Effect of chemical treatment on germination of nutmeg (Myristica fragrans Routt.) seeds

    Studies were undertaken to evaluate the influence of pre-sowing treatment of nutmeg (Myristica fragrans) seeds with various chemicals on the viability of seeds and seedling vigour. Among the various chemicals evaluated, gibberellic acid (100 ppm) was most effective and resulted in significantly higher germination (85%) and vigour index value (3945). &nbsp

    Piper hapnium is considered to be an endangered species of Piper. Occurrence of this species is reported mainly from the low-lying hills of Western Ghats. Though, scientists of Indian Institute of Spices Research conducted extensive surveys for collection of Piper species from the Western Ghats, P. hapnium (female plants) could be collected only once from the low land hills of Courtallum, Tamil Nadu. Earlier surveys conducted in the Silent Valley forests of Western Ghats (Ravindran et al. 1990) revealed the non-occurrence of P. hapnium in this area, though this sanctuary is identified as one of the rich centers for Piper diversity. &nbsp

    Studies were conducted to assess the performance of eight varieties of large cardamom at mid altitudes (660 meters MSL) in Arunachal Pradesh.     Effect of major nutrients on yield of ginger (Zingiber officinale Rose.) intercropped in coconut garden

    The effect of different levels of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium on the yield of ginger (Zingiber officinale Rosc.) grown as an intercrop in a coconut garden was studied in a field experiment conducted at Coconut Research Station, Balaramapuram, Thiruvanathapuram, Kerala. Significant increases in leaf production, leaf area index and dry matter production, crop growth rate and uptake of nutrients were resulted from higher dose of fertilizers. Fertilizer recommendation for ginger grown under open condition (N:P:K @.75:50:50 kg ha-1) is insufficient for ginger intercropped in coconut gardens. A higher fertilizer dose of N:P:K @ 150:100:100 kg ha-1 is necessary for increasing the yield of ginger grown as an intercrop in coconut garden. &nbsp

    Effect of mulching on yield of ginger (Zingiber officinale Rosc.)

    Field experiments were conducted at Barapani, Meghalaya to evaluate the response of ginger to the application of locally available organic mulches. Five treatments namely, paddy straw mulch, Schima wallichii dry leaf mulch, Eupatorium odoratum green stem and leaf mulch, Pinus kesia dry leaf mulch and unmulched control were compared in the present study. Use of organic mulches enhanced the sprouting, reduced the dry matter accumulation by weeds and improved the growth and yield of ginger significantly. Paddy straw and Schima leaves were superior as these mulches increased the yield by 43.6% and 39.7% over control, respectively. &nbsp

    Salinity tolerance of cumin (Cuminum cyminum L.) genotypes during germination

    A laboratory experiment was conducted to identify cumin (Cuminum cyminum L.) genotypes tolerant to salt at germination stage. Four salinity levels having electrical conductivity of 2.61 (control), 5.17 (low), S.10 (medium) and 12.15 (high) dSm-1 were tested. There is an increase in the suppression of seed germination with increase in salinity in all the genotypes tested. The genotype UC-20S showed maximum salt tolerance, followed by UC-209 and UC-2IS. &nbsp

    Optimum dose of nitrogen and potassium for ginger in Wynad, Kerala

    Study on nutrient requirement of ginger in Wynad, Kerala showed the positive effect of higher, doses of Nand K on the yield. Among the 16 levels of Nand K, 3 combinations viz., 150 kg N, 50 kg K; 150 kg N, 100 kg K and 75 kg N, 150 kg K ha-1 were found to be significantly superior with respect to yield. Among the vegetative characters, plant height was found to be significantly influenced by nitrogen. The optimum dose of Nand K derived from the quadratic equation was 144 kg and 109 kg ha-1 respectively. &nbsp
