Screening mint (Mentha spp.) accessions against root-knot nematode infection
Different mint (Mentha spp.) accessions were screened in vitro against root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne incognita). Root-knot infection was high in Siwalik and Himalaya and two M. arvensis cultivars, whereas moderate reaction was found in M. arvensis cultivars like SS-11, SS-27, Gomti, Kosi, M. cardiaca, and MAH-1. The lowest root-knot infection level was found on SS-4, SS-5, Kalka and 55-20. Moderate to high degree of resistance was recorded in SS-1-4, SS-2-7, SS-15, SS-26, M. piperita cv. Kukrail, M. spicata cv. Neera, M. spicata cv. Arka, M. sitrata cv. Kiran, M. gracilis and M. viridis.
 
Effect of chemical treatment on germination of nutmeg (Myristica fragrans Routt.) seeds
Studies were undertaken to evaluate the influence of pre-sowing treatment of nutmeg (Myristica fragrans) seeds with various chemicals on the viability of seeds and seedling vigour. Among the various chemicals evaluated, gibberellic acid (100 ppm) was most effective and resulted in significantly higher germination (85%) and vigour index value (3945).
 
Effect of row spacing and nitrogen fertilization on growth, yield and composition of bulb in garlic (Allium sativum L.) cultivars
The field experiment to study the effect of row spacing and nitrogen fertilization on growth, yield and composition of bulb in garlic cultivars was conducted during rabi in 1998-99 and 1999-2000. All growth parameters, yield attributing traits, bulb yield and contents of the bulb increased significantly with the increasing level of nitrogen application and row spacing and these were maximum with nitrogen application of 200 kg ha-1 and a row spacing of 15 cm. However, the T.S.S. was higher in closer row spacing (10 cm). The cultivar, Jajavar local was significantly superior over the other two cultivars in all these characters. The interaction studies showed that the treatment combination of N. S2 V2, (Nitrogen @ 200 kg ha-1, row spacing of 15 cm and cultivar Jajavar local) gave higher bulb yield (128 q ha-1) with maximum net returns (Rs 77,236 ha-1) and a B : C ratio (3.06:1).
 
Quality of chilli (Capsicum annuum L.) variety Co-3 as influenced by levels and sources of phosphorus and levels of nitrogen
Nitrogen and phosphorus application increased the ascorbic acid content and capsaicin content in green, ripe and dry chilli. Sources of phosphorus did not have any significant effect on the ascorbic acid content. The maximum ascorbic acid content was recorded in green fruit which decreased gradually with maturity of fruit, recording the lowest value in dry pod, while capsaicin content was lowest in green fruit and maximum in dry pod.
 
Transfer of clustered and upright fruit characters into two popular chilli cultivars of Tamil Nadu
Transfer of two agronomically desirable characters from CA-33 and CA-219 to two popular chilli cultivars, G-4 and CO-2, was attempted. The F, hybrids and their segregating population, F2, BC, and BC2 were raised to determine the gene action in respect of the fruit orientation and clustered fruit character. The results revealed that genes responsible for the clustered fruit character are monogenic while, the upright fruit character is digenic, controlled by two genes with dominant and recessive epistasis.
 
Empirical model for turmeric (Curcuma domestica Val.) yield prediction
The mean weather variables namely maximum (TMAX) and minimum (TMIN) temperature, maximum (RHMAX) and minimum (RHMIN) relative humidity, rainfall (RAINF), rainy days (RAIND), evaporation (EVPN), wind speed at 8 feet height (WINDS), sunshine hours per day (SUNSH) and total solar radiation (RADN) of different months of turmeric crop season for twenty years (1979-80 to 1998-99) were correlated with yield (dry) in Coimbatore District, Tamil Nadu. Out of the ten variables studied, three variables (TMAX, RHMAX and RADN) did not show significant relationship with yield while the remaining seven variables had significant correlation with yield. These significant variables were further subjected to stepwise regression analysis and those variables, which could be related to yield variability reasonably (EVPN, RHMIN, RAINF, TMIN) were used in the final regression model. This model was used to estimate turmeric yield in Coimbatore District and it was found that the estimated and observed yields did not differ. This model (Y= -11675.5119 - 591.0617 EVPN 3 + 810.3569 TMIN, + 12.1481 RAINF2 + 91.7499 RHMIN,) can be used to predict the yield of turmeric and total production in Coimbatore District, Tamil Nadu, India.
 
Salinity tolerance of cumin (Cuminum cyminum L.) genotypes during germination
A laboratory experiment was conducted to identify cumin (Cuminum cyminum L.) genotypes tolerant to salt at germination stage. Four salinity levels having electrical conductivity of 2.61 (control), 5.17 (low), S.10 (medium) and 12.15 (high) dSm-1 were tested. There is an increase in the suppression of seed germination with increase in salinity in all the genotypes tested. The genotype UC-20S showed maximum salt tolerance, followed by UC-209 and UC-2IS.
 
Response of Coleus aromaticus to Glomus fasciculatum and other beneficial soil microflora
Stem cuttings of Coleus aromaticus were treated with vesicular arbuscular mycorrhiza (Glomus fasciculatum) and beneficial microorganisms viz., Bacillus coagulans, Pseudomonas fluorescens, Azotobacter chroococcum and Trichoderma harzianum either singly or in combination of organisms. The number of leaves and branches; total biomass, nitrogen and phosphorus contents were higher in plants treated with G. fasciculatum alone. Synergistic effect was noticed especially in plants treated with G. fasciculatum + P. fluorescens. Mycorrhizal colonization in roots was also maximum when V AM was applied alone.
 
Evaluation of ajowan (Trachyspermum ammi L.) introductions for growth, yield and quality
Five ajowan (Trachyspermum ammi L.) introductions (RA-6, HAJ-S-I, RA-2, RA-7 and RA-4) and a local cultivar were evaluated for their growth, yield and quality under alluvial zone of West Bengal (India). Among the introductions, RA-2 exhibited superiority over other introductions in respect of morphological characters such as plant height, number of primary branches per plant and number of leaves per plant and seed yield. The essential oil content was significantly higher in local cultivar (4.53%), while essential oil yield per hectare was significantly higher in RA-7 (14.50 kg) which was on par with RA-4 (14.13 kg).
 
Studies on stomatal frequency and its relationship with leaf biomass and rhizome yield of turmeric (Curcuma longa L.) genotypes
Stomatal frequencies of twelve turmeric (Curcuma longa L.) genotypes were recorded from different locations of both surfaces of the fourth, sixth and eighth nodal leaves. Turmeric leaves were amphistomatous having lower stomatal frequency in the upper surface (426.6 - 1773.7 sq. cm-1) and higher in the lower surface (7131.5 - 12,270.9 sq. cm-1) of the leaves. With a few exceptions, stomatal frequency of the leaves of the genotypes tested increased from fourth to eighth nodal position. The stomatal frequency of the genotypes either at the same location within leaf, at different locations within leaf or both leaf surfaces taken together did not vary significantly. The genotype TCP-9 had the highest stomatal frequency. However, stomatal frequency increased from base towards tip on both surfaces of the leaf, irrespective of the position of the leaf in all the genotypes. The stomatal frequency appeared significant and more positively correlated with rhizome yield than leaf dry weight in genotypes resistant to leaf blotch disease while in susceptible types it exhibited significant and negative correlation with leaf dry weight and rhizome yield.
