Performance of ginger and turmeric genotypes in Raigarh District of Chhattisgarh
Eleven turmeric and six ginger genotypes were evaluated at Regional Agricultural Research Station, Boirdadar, Raigarh, Chhattisgarh. All the entries were found better than the local genotypes used as checks. Varada gave the highest rhizome yield (175.3 q ha-1) followed by V3S1 8 (174.0 q ha-1) in ginger and turmeric PTS-43 gave the maximum fresh rhizome yield (255.9 q ha-1) which was closely followed by JTS-2 (251.2 q ha-1), Acc. 360 (246.9 q ha-1), Raj Sonia (234.9 q ha-1) and JTS-1 (231.6 q ha-1). These genotypes can be popularized for cultivation in Raigarh District of Chhattisgarh for increasing the production of ginger and turmeric.
 
Varietal evaluation of black pepper (Piper nigrum L.) for yield, quality and anthracnose disease resistance in Idukki District, Kerala
Fourteen accessions of black pepper were evaluated at the Cardamom Research Station, Pampadumpara for yield, quality and disease resistance. Out of the fourteen cultivars, CuI. 239 (Panniyur-5) recorded the highest wet (906.5 g) and dry (310.1 g) yield of berries per plant. The maximum volatile oil (5.06%) and oleoresin (9.4%) contents in dry berries were observed in CuI. 5128 and Panniyur-1, respectively. A positive correlation existed between the number of spikes and berries per plant and yield. However, yield and quality characters are negatively correlated, though not significant. The results showed that Panniyur-5 is the most suitable black pepper variety for high range conditions of Idukki District.
 
Effect of bio-fertilizers on growth and yield of chilli (Capsicum annuum L.) cv Byadagi Dabba at different levels of nitrogen and phosphorus
Investigations were carried out to study the effect of nitrogenous and phophatic bio-fertilizers along with different levels of nitrogen and phosphorus on growth and yield of chillies (Capsicum annuum) cv Byadagi Dabba. The maximum plant height, leaf area per plant and dry matter production per plant were in the treatment supplied with 75% N, P plus 100% K in addition to the inoculation of Azotobacter, Azospirillum, phosphate solubilizing bacteria (PSB) and vesicular arbuscular mycorrhiza (VAM). The plants inoculated with Azotobacter, Azospirillum, PSB and VAM along with 75% N, P plus 100% Kproduced more number of fruits per plant and higher yield of dry chillies. Application of bio-fertilizers along with reduced level of chemical fetilizers has beneficial effect compared to application of chemical fertilizers or bio-fertilizers alone.
 
Studies on the essential oils of Curcuma haritha Mangaly & Sabu and C. raktakanta Mangaly & Sabu
The essential oils obtained by hydrodistillation from the fresh rhizomes of two endemic species of Curcuma viz. C. haritha and C. raktakanta were studied by GLC analysis. Eleven components were identified from C. haritha of which camphor (21.24%) was the major component and ten components were identified from C. raktakanta of which ethyl p-methoxycinnamate (16.57%) was the major component. a-pinene, b-pinene, camphor, terpinyl acetate, turmerone and ethyl p-methoxycinnamate were common to both species
Evaluation of high yielding accessions of small cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum Maton) for suitability in the high ranges of Idukki District
Ten high yielding small cardamom accessions were collected from RRS, Mudigere; ICRI, Saklespur and CRS, Pampadumpara and evaluated for their suitability in Idukki District, Kerala. M-1 and PV -1 were found to be high yielding varieties since both of them recorded the highest yield consistently for four consecutive years. M-l was relatively tolerant to thrips infestation. The biometrical traits such as plant height, tiller number, panicle number, panicle length and seed number showed high positive correlation with yield. These characters are likely to be the ideal selection criteria in small cardamom.
 
Inheritance of determinate growth habit in fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum L.)
Inheritance of determinate growth habit in fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum L.) was examined in six generations of the reciprocal crosses of HM 350 with NLM and HM 65. All the F1 plants had indeterminate growth habit in both the crosses. In F2, segregation was observed in 3 : 1 ratio for indeterminate and detenninate plant types revealing that determinate habit was under the control of a single recessive gene. The results were further confirmed by observing 1 : 1 ratio in back crosses involving HM 350 as one of the parents.
 
Growth and yield of native germplasm of large cardamom in the wild habitat of Arunachal Pradesh
Surveys were made during 1998 and 1999 to identify and evaluate in situ the germplasm of large cardamom available in natural forests of Arunachal Pradesh. It was observed that eight distinct types of large cardamom were present in this state, which differ significantly in their morphological characteristics. Boklok, a high altitude accession, had the highest plant height, number of tillers and panicles, maximum yield and dry weight of fruits. However, fruits panic1e-t was found· to be highest in Bebo light red. Jaker green has larger capsules with highest fresh weight of fruits, while Belak had the highest number of seeds fruirl. The germplasm collected provides good scope for the crop improvement through breeding.
 
Review of research on kokum, camboge and related species
Garcinia species are distributed throughout the tropics and have tremendous potential, both as spices and medicinal plants. Though there are more than 200 species in the genus, only 20 are found in India. The two species namely Garcinia gummi-gutta (L) Rob. (camboge) and G. indica Choisy (kokum) are widely distributed in the Western Ghats and are very popular in Sooth Indian cuisine. Recently excited the scientific world for processing properties that regulate obesity. Though commercially important, these species remained neglected and not much attention was given for their research and development. In this review, an attempt has been made to collect and compile the available information so that areas of interest could easilly be identified for further investigation and research.
 
Influence of shade regimes on the physiological parameters of ginger
A study was carried out at College of Agriculture, Vellayani to determine the relation of various physiological parameters on the yield of ginger under different shade levels. The experimental design was a completely randomized design with five treatments (0, 20, 40, 60 and 80 per cent shade levels) and four replications. Higher dry matter production (DMP), leaf area index (LAI), net assimilation rate (NAR) and crop growth rate (CGR) were observed in low shade level (20 per cent). The higher yield at this shade level may be due to the higher values of these physiological parameters. The results suggest a positive response of shade on the physiological parameters and yield of ginger, provided the intensity of shade is low. Regression equation fitted showed the influence of shade on DMP, NAR, CGR and yield, while no significant relation was observed with regard to LAI.
 
Fermented beverages from spices-a new nutraceutical drink
An investigation was carried out to develop herbal and spice beverages. Spices viz. black pepper, fennel, dill., coriander and cumin were used. The possibility of making spice wines more appropriately called as "Elixirs" was examined. The nutritive value in terms of chemical components and mineral composition and keeping quality of the product under ambient temperature were worked out. The cost economics was also calculated.
