    Effect of NPK fertilizers on growth, oil yield and quality of French basil (Ocimum basilicum L.)

    A field trial was conducted at Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh), to study the effect of different levels of NPK on growth, oil yield and quality of methyl chavicol rich cultivar of French basil (Ocimum basilicum). Five levels of N, P,05 and K,O namely, control (no fertilizer), 37.5, 20.0 and 20.0 kg ha-1, 56.25, 30.00 and 30.00 kg ha-1, 75.0, 40.0 and 40.0 kg ha-1 and 93.5, 50.0 and 50.0 kg ha-1 were evaluated. The results indicated that application of N, P,05 and K,O @ 75.0, 40.0 and 40.0 kg ha-1 increased plant height, fresh herbage, dry matter and oil yield significantly over control. The oil content in fresh herbage and its quality were not influenced by fertilizer application. &nbsp

    Comparison of full sib, half sib and S,progenies in fennel (Foeniculum vulgare Mill.)

    A field experiment was conducted at Jobner (Rajasthan), to compare different population improvement methods in a fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) population namely, UF-143. Estimates of genotypic coefficient of variation and phenotypic coefficient of variation were higher in full sib than S1 and half sib progenies for most of the traits. Heritability estimate was higher in full sib progenies for days to 50% flowering, seeds umbel-1 and test weight, while half sib showed maximum heritability for branches plan-1, umbels plan-1 and umbelletes umbel-1. S1 progenies recorded maximum heritability and genetic gain for seed yield plant-1. For most of the traits, full sib progenies recorded maximum genetic gain except plant height, umbellets umbel-1 and seed yield plant-1. &nbsp

    Yield stability in coriander (Coriandrum sativum L.)

    The yield stability of eight elite accessions of coriander (Coriandrum sativum) was estimated under Chattisgarh plains condition at Raigarh (Chattisgarh). The accession JCO-387 yielded the highest, exhibiting above average response but unstable reaction (high S'di) while UD-744, DH-246 and UD-743 were promising and suitable for favourable environment. &nbsp

    Response of ginger (Zingiber officinale) to methods of planting and levels of phosphorus in a rehabilitated forest developed on sodie land

    Experiments were conducted during 1999 and 2000 at Banthra Research Station of NBRI, Lucknow (UP) to standardize agro-techniques of ginger cultivation in forest gaps. The response of three lnethods of planting and three levels of phosphorus was studied, which revealed that the flat bed followed by earthing and application of P 205 50 kg ha-1 recorded the maximum growth and yield (7.88 t ha-1). These treatments also influenced the bio-chemical composition positively showing greatest values of crude protein (9%), crude fibre (5.15%) and volatile oil (1.45%). The study showed a modest potential of ginger cultivation in a semi-reclaimed sodic soils through afforestations. &nbsp

    Studies on variability in twenty genotypes of Coriandrum sativum L. indicated higher estimates of genotypic coefficient of variation, phenotypic coefficient of variation, heritability and genetic advance for seed yield, ulnbels plantl, seeds umbeI-l and plant height, suggesting probable role of additive gene effects on character expression. Superior genotypes for different, traits identified in the study could be exploited for inter varietal hybridization (reciprocal recurrent selection method) for evolving a high yielding variety with other desirable traits. &nbsp

    Stability analysis for seed yield, its contributing traits and oil content in coriander (Coriandrum sativum L.)

    Twenty genetically different genotypes of coriander were evaluated for their stability with respect to their seed yield, its contributing traits and oil content. Environments differed significantly as revealed by significant mean square due to environment (linear) for all the traits studied. The genotype x environment interactions was found significant for days to flowering, plant height, 1000 seed weight, harvest index and oil content. Whereas non-significant mean square genotype x environment interaction for remaining traits showed linear response of genotypes to varying environments. Both linear and non-linear interactions were significant for plant height, 1000 seed weight, harvest index and oil content, whereas for seed yield only linear component was significant. The genotypes with good yield potential, average plant height and medium maturity were G.Cori-1, RCr-20, UD-262, RCr-446, UD-744, CS-2, RCr-41 and' G.Cori-2 suited for favourable environment, while Patan mandi-1 and UD-447 with regression coefficient (bi) < 1.0 could be suitable for low yielding environment. &nbsp

    Studies on genetic variability and selection criteria in F3 generation of a cross fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum L.)

    Thirty F3 families of the cross UM - 305 x Um - 117 in fenugreek were evaluated for seed yield and other component characters. Substantial amount of genetic variability was observed at inter as well as intra-family levels for all the observed characters. Plant height and number of pods per plant, haing true positive association with seed yield per plant, were mainly under the control of additive gene action and thus, direct selection for these characters would be effective for the improvement of seed yield per plant. Genetic variability at the intra-family level could be exploited by further selection for plant height and number of pods per plant. Superior families with respect to high mean performance for seed yield and its components were also identified. these families will be useful in developing high yielding fenugreek genotypes. &nbsp

    Influence of shade regimes on yield and quality of ginger (Zingiber officinale Rosc.)

    The effect of different levels of shade on yield and quality of ginger (Zingiber officinale Rosc.) was studied during two seasons at Coconut Research Station, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala Agricultural University, Kerala. The shade levels 20 and 40 per cent were favourable for obtaining higher dry ginger yield. Volatile oil content showed an increasing trend with increasing levels of shade. Maximum NVEE was recorded in the plants grown under 20 and 40 per cent shade levels. Higher starch content was observed in plants grown under 20 per cent shade level. Crude fibre content gradually reduced as the intensity of shade increased. The results indicate the possibility of utilizing existing shaded situations in coconut gardens and under other perennial crops for the production of ginger. &nbsp

    Mass, full and half sib-selection for genetic improvement in fennel (Foeniculum vulgare Mill.)

    A study was conducted to estimate genetic variances and heritability for yield and yield attributes in fennel UF-143 population using North Carolina Design-I. The dominance component was high for days to 50% flowering, branches per plant, umbels per plant, seeds per umbel, seed yield, harvest index and test weight. Preponderance of additive gene action was observed for plant height, umbellets per umbel and biological yield. The heritability in narrow sense was high for biological yield. Among the various methods for which theoretical responses were calculated, mass selection appeared suitable for the improvement of biological yield, harvest index, test weight, seed yield, umbellets per umbet umbels per plant and branches per plant. &nbsp
