    Genotype x environment interactions and stability analysis in elite lines of garlic (Allium safivum L.)

    Thirty five elite lines and three released varieties of garlic (Allium sativum) were evaluated for their stability, with respect to yield and its contributing traits, for three years at Rajgurunagar (Maharashtra) during rabi season. Analysis of variance for stability of different characters indicated that mean differences for varieties and environments (years) were significant for all the characters except for number of leaves, indicating that the performance with respect to number of leaves in different years was not stable. Genotype 50 gave stable performance for higher plant height, clove weight, total yield and marketable yield, while genotypes 74 and 163 gave better yield under adverse situations. Genotype 117 had stability for dwarf plant height, less number of leaves and more equatorial diameter. Genotype 58 had stability in desired direction for less number of leaves and lesser neck thickness. Genotype 52 showed stability for higher plant height, greater neck thickness and average number of cloves with less number of leaves. Variety G-41 was stable for marketable yield only. In genotypes 52, 58, 117, 163,200, 229 and variety G-41, the yield was more in favourable environmental conditions. &nbsp

    A field experiment was conducted at Mattuvarayapuram (Coimbatore District, Tamil Nadu) to evaluate the effect of lignite humic acid (HA) on growth and yield of turmeric (Curcuma longa) in an alfisol. The study revealed that application of 100% NPK 050:60:108 kg ha") with HA applied to soil 10 kg ha')'" foliar spray (HA 0.1%) + rhizome dipping (HA 0.1%) significantly enhanced the growth and yield attributes, fresh and cured rhizome yield of turmeric. &nbsp

    Integrated management of root-knot nematode Meloidogyne javanica (Treub) Chitwood in fennel (Foeniculum vulgare Mill.)

    Evaluation of organic cakes and nematicides for the management of root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne javanica) on fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) at Kapadvanj (Gujarat) indicated that all the treatments including organic amendments and nematicide either alone or in combination significantly reduced root-knot disease and increased the grain yield over control. Maximum grain yield (2762 kg ha-1) was obtained with the treatment neem cake 1000 kg ha-1 + phorate 1 kg ha-1, which was on par with Neemguard 20 kg ha-1 + phorate 1 kg ha-1 (2566 kg ha-1). Minimum root-knot index (1.64) was recorded in the combined treatment of neem cake 1000 kg ha-1 + phorate 1 kg ha-1, which was on par with castor cake 1000 kg ha-1 + phorate 1 kg ha-1. Maximum net returns (Rs. 22,775 ha-1) was obtained in the treatment neem cake 1000 kg ha-1 + phorate 1 kg ha-1. &nbsp

    The variability and association of genetic parameters of nine genotypes of lemongrass (Cymbopogon flexuosus) was studied at Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh). The genetic differences were highly significant for oil, citral, geraniol and geranyl acetate contents and herb and oil yield. High heritability estimates in broad sense were observed for all the characters. High heritability with low genetic advance recorded for oil and geranyl acetate contents indicated that these characters are under non-additive gene action. Oil yield was positively and significantly associated with herb yield and oil content. Maximum direct effect of herb yield on oil content and oil yield was also observed. &nbsp

    Combining ability in fennel (Foeniculum vulgare Mill.) for yield and quality

    Twelve genetically diverse varieties of fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) were evaluated at Jobner (Rajasthan) following diallel mating design for determining their utility as parents in the development of hybrids and/or high yielding composites. The analysis of variance indicated that varieties and heterosis were significant for most of the characters studied, indicating complex type of inheritance involving additive, dominance and epistatic components. The heterosis sum of squares accounted for more than 75% of the entries sum of squares. Partitioning of overall heterosis variation indicated that contribution of specific heterosis was the highest (>50%) among the three components. Estimates of genetic constants indicated that varietal heterosis effects were significa nt for all the tra its except days to 50% flowering and test weight, while specific heterosis effects were significant for most of the characters. The cross RF-101 x JF-25 showed the highest positive specific heterosis effect for seed yield plant·, along with high specific heterosis effects for umbels and biological yield plan 1''. These two parents represented a good choice to initiate inter-population improvement. &nbsp

    Investigations on intercropping of leguminous vegetables in a pruned field of jasmine (Jasminum sambac) carried out in a farmer's field at Keezakundalapadi (Cuddalore District, Tamil Nadu), indicated that intercropping pruned jasmine with double rows of vegetable cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) fetched the highest equivalent yield of jasmine (5,393 kg ha-I), land equivalent ratio (1.99), net returns (Rs. 1,44,113 ha-I) and benefit-cost ratio (3:1). &nbsp

    Effect of nitrogen and phosphorus on seed yield and uptake of nutrients in musk mallow (Abelmoschus moschatus Medic.)

    A field experiment conducted at Akola (Maharashtra) to study the effect of nitrogen and phosphorus on seed yield and uptake of nutrients in musk mallow (Abelmoschus moschatus) indicated that application of 75 kg N ha-1 and 50 kg P2O5 ha-1 recorded significantly higher seed yield and nutrient (NPK) uptake. The maximum uptake of nitrogen was registered at 135 days after sowing and phosphorus and potassium uptake at 180 days after sowing. &nbsp

    Sex change in Piper thomsoni Hook . (Piperaceae)

    Piper thomsoni, a dioecious Piper species endemic to north eastern India, was coll ected from Totopara forests (New Jalpaiguri District, West Bengal), multiplied and maintained at the Germplasm Conservatory, Experimental Farm, Indian Institute of Spices Research, Peruvannamuzhi (Kerala). The male plants conserved under partial shade exhibited sex change and a few berries developed on the spike. This appears to be the first report of sex change in the genus Piper. &nbsp

    Stability analysis for seed yield and its component characters in fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum L.)

    Fourteen genotypes of fenugreek (Trigollella foenum-graecum) were grown at Sriniketan (West Bengal) in four different environments during winter season for three consecutive years. Genotype x environment (G x E) interaction was studied for seed yield and its component characters namely, pods plant-', seeds pod" and test weight. G x E interactions were highly significant for all the characters. Both linear and non-linear components of G x E interactions were highly significant, non-linear component being predominant for seeds pod" and seed yield plant·" while linear component was predominant for test weight. However, both linear and non-linear components were equally important for pods plant-'. The genotypes UM-129, UM-301 and UM-302 were stable. &nbsp
