    Identification of Agromorphological Determinants Favoring the Propagation of Bacterial Disease in Agroforestry Farms of Cashew Trees in Côte d'Ivoire

    In Côte d'Ivoire, cashew cultivation faces several health obstacles. Among these problems, bacteriosis causes extensive damage to twigs, leaves and fruits, lowers the quality of crops and causes yield losses. The spread of this disease would be under the determination of the morphological characters of the cashew tree. The objective of this study is to search for agro-morphological determinants that influence the spread of bacteriosis in agroforestry systems in Côte d'Ivoire. To achieve this objective, 30 cashew trees spread across 26 agroforestry cashew orchards in the Korhogo, Sinématiali and Boundiali departments were chosen and geolocated. The study factor is the clone, consisting of 30 cashew genotypes, with 13 modalities. The collected data was subjected to descriptive analysis, correlation test, ACP and ascending hierarchical classification (CAH). The results obtained showed that the size and leaf areas and size of cashew trees are determinants that promote the spread of bacteriosis in these 30 cashew genotypes. Following this result, the ascending hierarchical classification (CAH) made it possible to screen the genotypes into three groups. These results should contribute to the agroecological management of bacteriosis, to enhance and intensify agroforestry cropping systems in Côte d'Ivoire

    Recent Trend of Precipitation and Crop Planning in Rajshahi Region of Bangladesh

    The study was carried out for investigation and analysis of long-term (45 years) monthly rainfall data of Rajshahi from 1975 to 2019 for better selection of crops and agricultural technology in this region of Bangladesh. The rainfall trend was determined using parametric and non-parametric method. Probability analysis of rainfall was performed for estimation of dry, wet, and average year rainfall. The results revealed negative trend of yearly rainfall, but it is statistically insignificant. By non-parametric method, ‘no trend’ was observed for yearly rainfall. Increasing trend of monthly rainfall during March and May and decreasing trend in other months were observed. The rainfall deficit period continued from November to March, and in some instant up to April (rainfall<PET).Total deficit for dry, wet, and average year were found as 488.2 mm, 405.7mm and 426.1mm respectively. By adopting low water-demanding cropping patterns during the deficit period, the withdrawal of groundwater can be minimized

    Productivity of Two Rice Varieties Using Ratoon System Through N Fertilizing Treatments at Two Flooding Types on Tidal Lowland Area

    Aims: This research objective was to determine productivity of two rice varieties using ratoon system through regulation of N fertilizer application at two flooding types in tidal lowland area.  Place and Duration of Study: The study was conducted from February to July 2020 at two locations in tidal lowland area, i.e. B-type flooding located at -203859, 132S 10404428,449E and C-type flooding located at -203858,81S 10404426,745E in Mura Sugih Village, Tanjung Lago Subdistrict, Banyuasin District, South Sumatra, Indonesia. Study Design: The experimental design used in this study was Factorial Randomized Block Design with two treatments factors and four replications.  The variety treatments (V) were consisted of V1: Inpari 30 and V2: Hipa 5 Ceva. N fertilizer application treatments (A) were consisted of A1: N fertilizing: 1/3 dose at planting period + 1/3 dose at 42 dap + 1/3 dose at 1 day after harvest (dah) of main crop; A2: N fertilizing: 1/3 dose at planting period + 1/3 dose at 42 dap + 1/6 dose at 1 dah of main crop + 1/6 dose at 21 dah of main crop. Result: The results showed that N fertilizer application regulation can increase productivity of two rice varieties using ratoon system at two flooding types land in tidal lowland area. Productivity of rice hybrid (Hipa 5 ceva) tend to be higher than that of rice inbred  (Inpari 30) using ratoon system at two flooding types land in tidal lowland area. Productivity of two rice varieties using ratoon system tend to be higher at B-flooding type land than that of C- flooding type land

    We aim to review Protaetia brevitarsis surensis (PBS) with a specific focus on its historical uses and characteristics, making it one of the most viable food sources or medicinal materials. Ordinary PBS and food insects are characterized by low-emission, especially greenhouse gas, insect farming technologies in Republic of Korea. In addition, PBS is considered essentially acceptable for alternative insect food for human and effective environmental conservation in the near future. Generally, PBS larvae have long been studied the most widely as edible and medicinal insects in Korea compared to the other countries. Almost one thousands farmers are breeding the PBS and the productivity range are very variable from 0.3 to 5.0 tons/person·per year

    Effects of Extreme Flooding on Output of Selected Crops in Anambra State, Nigeria from 1990 to 2019

    The study has analyzed effects of extreme flooding on output of selected root and tuber crops in Anambra State, Nigeria for the period of 1990-2019using secondary data collected on cassava, yam and sweet potato output from the agricultural production survey of Anambra State Agricultural Development Programme and annual averages of rainfall from the Nigeria Meteorological Agency inAwka station. Data collected were analysed by using multivariate simple linear regression and trend analysisin linear trend analysis and line graph. Results respectively showed an increasing trend in output of cassava, yam and sweet potato within the researched period with a depression in output of cassava and yam in 2014 and 2015. The regression results showed that coefficients of determination (R2) values of yam output were (0.620), cassava output (0.560) and sweet potato (0.580), which implied that 63%, 56% and 58% changed in output of roots and tuber crops accounted for rainfall within the research period. Specifically, rainfall (0.002) was positively related to yam output at (p<0.05). This implied excessive amount of rainfall resulting flooding, which influenced the output of production of yam. Rainfall (-0.015) and (-0.003) were negatively related to output of cassava and sweet potato at 5% probability level, which indicated extreme rainfall translating into flooding, which adversely affected the output of cassava and sweet potato in this area. The result of the tested hypothesis showed that extreme flooding had significant negative effects on output of roots and tuber crops in the researched area. Based on results, it was concluded that extreme flooding deleteriously affected output of root and tuber crops in Anambra state, Nigeria. Therefore, farmers were advised to change their crop production technologies including time of planting to suit changes in rainfall pattern in order to avert their adverse effects

    Preliminary Study of Consumer Preference in Decision Making Processed Fish Products in Bekasi (Case Study of Bandar Djakarta Restaurant, Bekasi)

    Consumer preference is a consumer attitude towards a product choice. The needs and desires of consumers are very varied and can change because of the factors that influence consumers in choosing products. This study aims to analyze consumer preferences and what attributes are considered by consumers in making decisions to choose processed fish products. This research was conducted at Bandar Djakarta Restaurant, Summarecon, Bekasi City in February - March 2021. Primary data collection techniques used accidental sampling of 30 respondents, while secondary data was obtained from Bandar Djakarta Bekasi, FPIK Unpad Library and Unpad Public Library. The analytical tool used to determine consumer preferences is the measurement of attitudes using the Likert scale and the attribute analysis tool that is considered in product selection, namely the Chi Square analysis. Based on the results of the analysis of the level of consumer preference at the Bandar Djakarta Restaurant, it shows that the most preferred processed product is shrimp. The attributes that are considered in purchasing processed shrimp products are consecutively good taste, low price, and easy to find, high nutrition and family preference at the same level

    A Survey of Tomato Farmers and their Knowledge on Fruit Borers (Helicoverpa Armigera Mill) in Kumawu of Sekyere Kumawu and Agogo of Asante Akim North Districts in Ghana

    Tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) is a popular and important crop as it is consumed worldwide. It serves as a source of nutrients such as vitamins A and C. In Ghana, tomato production contributes to agricultural GDP, employment creation and foreign exchange earnings. However, tomato production is faced with challenges that hamper productivity. This has been attributed mainly to attacks by pests such as fruit borers. Therefore, this study was conducted to ascertain the characteristics of tomato farmers in Sekyere Kumawu and Asante Akim North districts in Ghana and their knowledge on fruit borers. Structured questionnaires were administered to gather data from sixty respondents who were sampled through a multistage sampling technique. Results from the survey showed male dominance in commercial tomato production in both districts with an average age of 43 years, which falls within the active working age group. Majority of the farmers indicated that they were into tomato production for commercial purposes, and practice sole cropping. More than 60% of the farmers revealed the fruit borer as a major pest causing yield losses of about 27% on average on their farms. Moreover, it was found that majority of the respondents control the fruit borer with synthetic chemicals

    Exploration of Cocoa Pod Pest and Damage Level in Lima Puluh Kota Regency, West Sumatera, Indonesia

    Aims: The study aimed to explore the cocoa pod pests and the damage level of pests in Lima Puluh Kota regency, Indonesia. Study Design: Purposive random sampling. Place and Duration of Study: The research was conducted in cocoa field in Lima Puluh Kota Regency, West Sumatera, Indonesia from January to June 2021. Methodology: Purposive random sampling was used in the research. Three districts that have cocoa fields were chosen as location of the study. One sub district of each district was chosen and two cocoa fields of each sub district were chosen as sampling. The criteria of field sampling were 1) the field area was 0.5 hectare, 2) the plants age ±4 years and the plants were productive. Results: The result showed that cocoa pod borer (Conopomorpha cramerella) and pod sucking bug (PSB) (Helopeltis spp.) were the cocoa pod pest insects in Lima Puluh Kota regency. The percentage of attacked plants by CPB and PSB in Lima Puluh Kota were 21.18% and 56.28% respectively. Attacked pods by CPB and PSB were 10.82% and 79.45%. For attack intensity of CPB and PSB, there were 8.52% and 41.09% respectively. Conclusion: According to result obtained, the attack intensity of CPB and PSB in Lima Puluh Kota were Slight and Moderate respectively

    Assessment of Silicon and Nitrogen Fertilization on Plant and Soil Nutrition and Rice Yield Grown in Typic Ustifluvent Soil

    Aim: Assess the effect of silicon and nitrogen application on chemical nutrition of plant and soil grown in Typic Ustifluvent soil Study design: Factorial RBD Place and duration of study: Field experiments was conducted in farmers holding in Kuttalam Block, Mayiladuthurai district. The experiment was conducted for two seasons Methodology: Field experiments was conducted in farmers holding during kuruvai and samba seasons to. The treatments consists of silicon levels viz., 0, 50,100 and 150 kg ha-1 and nitrogen levels viz., 0, 50,100, 150 kg ha-1. using rice as test crop var. ADT43 and CR1009.The grain and straw yield was recorded at harvest. The grain and straw samples were analyzed for nutrient contents and corresponding uptake was calculated. The soil samples were analyzed for nutrient status at different physiological stages. Results: The result revealed that graded doses of nitrogen and silicon applied alone or in combination caused significant improvement in rice yield over control. The rice yield reached its pinnacle (5600, 6786 kg ha-1) and straw yield (6811, 8031 kg ha-1) was noticed with 150 kg N ha-1 + 150 kg Si ha-1. However it was comparable with 150 kg N ha-1 + 100 kg Si ha-1 and 100 kg N ha-1 + 150 kg Si ha-1. The uptake increased with nitrogen and silicon levels. The highest nutrient uptake was recorded with 150 kg N ha-1 + 150 kg Si ha-1. It was comparable with 150 kg N ha-1 + 100 kg Si ha-1. Available nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and silicon increased with N and Si levels. The highest available N, P, K and Si was maximum when nitrogen and silicon was applied at 150 kg ha-1. Conclusion:  Conjoint application of 150 kg N ha-1 and 150 kg Si ha-1 recommended to realize maximum yield of rice grown in soil low nitrogen and silico

    Farmers’ Perspective on Insect Pests that Affect Vegetables in Protected Structures with Emphasis to Tuta absoluta (Meyrick) in Lesotho

    Protected farming is one of the innovations used by farmers to control pests and climatic conditions and therefore improve yield of vegetables. However, these structures also provide an ideal environment for biotic factors such as insect pests and diseases. In this study, a survey of 60 farmers was conducted to determine the types of vegetables cultivated under protected structures, insect pests and management practices employed by farmers using structured questionnaires. Data was analysed through descriptive statistics using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). The results showed that most farmers grew tomato, cabbage, swiss chard, rape and peppers. Farmers considered insect pests as the major constraint to vegetable production. The most important insect pests found infesting farmers’ vegetables were aphids (Aphis gossypii), tomato leafminer (Tuta absoluta), bagrada bug (Bagrada hilaris) and cutworm (Agrotis ipsilon). To manage these pests, farmers relied heavily on chemical pesticides which are dangerous to them and to the environment. It is therefore important to develop an integrated pest management plan that farmers can use to reduce use of pesticides
