Viability of Spermatozoa in Goat's Liquid Semen after Adding Sweet Orange Essential Oil to The Andromed Extender
Aims: To find out the percentage of live spermatozoa after diluting the goat's liquid semen using an andromed extender plus sweet orange essential oil.
Study Design: Randomized Block Design.
Place and Duration of Study: Sample: Galang, Deli Serdang Regency, Indonesia, between December 2022 and January 2023.
Methodology: The research procedure starts with the preparation of semen extender, collection of fresh semen, dilution of semen and equilibration. This research obtained conducted using a Randomized Block Design consisting of 5 treatment levels and five replications. Semen storage using 3 Bucks, which has done for three days. As a treatment is the addition of sweet orange essential oil as much as (P0) 0%, (P1) 0.25%, (P2) 0.5%, (P3) 0.75% and (P4) 1% on the andromed extender. The observed variable was percentage viability spermatozoa evaluated before equilibration and after equilibration.
Results: The results showed that the addition of sweet orange essential oil had a not significant effect (P <0.01) to viability of spermatozoa. The results of adding sweet orange essential oil to the extender (after equilibration) were 80% (P0), 80% (P1), 80% (P2), 80% (P3) and 81% (P4).
Conclusion: Adding sweet orange essential oil to andromed had no effect on the viability of goat spermatozoa in liquid semen
Service per Conception on Sheep in Langkat District
Aims: To find out the Service per Conception of sheep in the Artificial Insemination program in Langkat Regency.
Study Design: Descriptive analysis.
Place and Duration of Study: Langkat Regency, Indonesia. between July 2022 and October 2022.
Methodology: Artificially inseminated sheep are 50 lambs using frozen semen. Data were obtained through interviews using questionnaires with sheep farmers. Data were analyzed descriptively.
Results: The results showed that the average Service per Conception observation value for sheep in Langkat Regency was 1.30 ± 0.20.
Conclusion: Service per Conception of sheep in Langkat Regency is still normal. But the management of maintenance and handling of Artificial Insemination needs to be improved
Adoption of Quality Protein Maize Technology in Hai and Babati Districts, Tanzania
Technology adoption is a crucial driver of economic growth. The paper assesses the acceptance of quality protein maize (QPM) among farmers in the Hai and Babati districts Tanzania. The study used a random sample of 120 smallholder maize farmers in four villages to collect information regarding the adoption of QPM in the study area. The study employed descriptive statistics to analyse the data collected. The results show that only 25% of the sampled farmers have adopted and are still using the technology. This outcome has a low adoption rate. The study recommends that the government ensure farmers use their inputs and outputs efficiently to achieve QPM. In addition, the government should promote and support QPM's promotion and dissemination activities in the country. Moreover, seed agents should ensure a sustainable supply and timely availability of seeds to farmers
Tandem Effect of Bio-Fortification on Dry Matter Content and Gari Yield of Some Yellow Root Cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) Varieties
Bio-fortification of cassava increased its total carotenoid content (TCC) but may have boomerang effect on key quality traits of cassava like dry matter content (DMC). Meanwhile, DMC of cassava reflects its true biological and product yield. Therefore, this study was conducted to determine the relationship between TCC of some novel yellow root cassava varieties (YRCVs) and each of DMC and gari yield. Three bio-fortified YRCVs (IBA070593, IBA070539 and IBA011368) and a white root variety (TMSI30572) as check were harvested 12 months after planting. The TCC (µg/g) and DMC (%) of the fresh storage roots were determined following standard procedures. Subsequently, the fresh storage roots were processed into gari and gari yield (t/ha) was estimated. Data collected were subjected to descriptive statistics, analysis of variance at 5% level of probability and correlation analysis. The check variety lacked TCC but had significantly higher DMC (34.34%) and gari yield (3.40 t/ha) than other varieties except variety IBA070593 for DMC (33.95%). Total carotenoid content of the bio-fortified cassava varieties ranged between 7.81 µg/g (IBA011368) and 10.23 µg/g (IBA070593). Among the YRCVs, IBA070593 consistently had the highest DMC (33.95%) and gari yield (3.2 t/ha) while IBA070539 had least values of 24.63% and 2.2 t/ha, respectively. The TCC of the fresh storage roots correlated negatively with DMC (-0.22) and gari yield (-0.22). Notably, IBA070593 had a good combination of high TCC, DMC and gari yield, hence, it can deliver high gari yield and TCC to processors and consumers, respectively. Propagation of variety IBA070593 is therefore encouraged because it can offer the triple benefits of food, nutritional and financial security
Climate Change Adaptation Strategies for Agro-pastoralists in Tanzania
Climate change is seriously impacting the well-being of rural agro-pastoralists whose main livelihoods depend on rainfed agriculture. This study examined the factors that influence farmers' decisions to climate change adaptation measures. The study sampled 411 agro-pastoralist farmers and used factor analysis to extract correlated and uncorrelated adjustment strategies. These strategies include; Crop diversification, livestock diversification, small scale irrigation, rain-water harvesting and off-farm activities were found to be the adaptation strategies extracted by factor analysis as dependent variables. Results obtained by the study show that the five coefficients of the variables identified were negative while three were positive, suggesting that the propensity (tendency) of adapting a practice is conditioned by whether or not a practice in the subset has been adapted. Moreover, it is clear that in central and northern zones of Tanzania, age and access to communication media are strongly determined the decisions to adaptation strategies to climate change among the agro-pastoralists. Therefore, the paper recommends for designing policies that reflect the differences in ecology among agro-pastoralists
Farmers’ Perceptions of Climate Change and Adaptation to Poverty Diseases along River Niger in Edo and Kogi States, Nigeria
Climate variability has the potential to worsen existing vulnerabilities such as Malaria, HIV/AIDS and Tuberculosis. This study examined the farmers’ perception of climate change and adaptation to poverty diseases along river Niger. Primary data were collected through questionnaires from 358 respondents in Edo and Kogi States, who were selected using multistage sampling techniques. Descriptive statistics and the threshold concept for discrete variables, were used as analytical tools. Results of the analyses revealed that the use of mosquito nets had the highest adaptation measure to poverty diseases, with a Likert scale mean score of 4.53, while land preparation pattern was the most used adaptive strategy to climate change. The study recommends that to reduce the effect of poverty disease, there is a need for policy makers to engage communities when making decisions relating to their health
Factors Influencing the Accessibility of Anchor Borrower's Programme Fund among Rice Farmers in Ebonyi State, Nigeria
The study examined the factors influencing the accessibility of the Anchor Borrowers Programme (ABP) Fund among Rice Farmers in Ebonyi State, Nigeria. Specifically, it describes the socio-economic characteristics of the respondents, assesses the operation of ABP, and identifies some constraints encountered by the rice farmers in accessing the ABP fund. Data collected were analysed using descriptive statistical tools such as frequency counts, percentages, mean and standard deviation. In contrast, binary logistic regression was used to determine the socio-economic factors influencing the accessibility of ABP funds among rice farmers. The findings revealed that the mean age of the rice farmers was 43.4 years with male rice farmers (58.3%) forming the majority. About 60 per cent were married, with a mean household size of approximately five persons. The majority (88.3%) had formal education, and the mean year of farm experience was 17.5 years. Some of the operations of the ABP are the supply of inputs like seedlings as submitted by 81.7 per cent of the respondents and credit source from ABP by all (100%). The majority (74.2%) sold their products personally. The result of the binary logistic regression model shows that sex, marital status, household size, years of formal education, farming experience membership of social organization and annual income had a positive and significant relationship with the accessibility of ABP funds. The primary constraints encountered by the rice farmers were poor access to credit, poor quality equipment, poor service and poor administration of the program. It was recommended that Government should provide incentive measures to the rice farmers that will reduce the effect of dwindling market prices of agricultural commodities, especially Rice
Isolation and Screening of Agriculturally Important Bacteria (PGPR) from Organic Sources of Nutrient (Panchgavya, Jeevamrit and Farm Yard Manure) for Future Use
Agriculture is an essential component to maintain the human health but due to sudden increase in population the demand has increased and to meet the requirement the use of chemical fertilizer has also increase. The continuous use of chemical fertilizer and pesticides degrade the quality and fertility of soil and also reduce the yield of various crops. The organic sources such as panchgavya, jeevamrit and Farm Yard Manure consists load of beneficial microorganisms that promote the plant growth, yield and promote natural resources. The present study was carried out by isolating the bacteria from organic sources (panchgavya, jeevamrit and FYM) because minute amount of bacterial culture is suffient to prepare large one according to need and can be stored for longer time as compare to organic input. The samples of panchgavya, jeevamrit and FYM were collected from different location of Himachal Pradesh. A total of 32 bacterial isolates from panchgavya, 43 from jeevamrit and 59 from FYM were isolated and screened for multiple plant growth promoting traits. Only 4 bacterial isolates from panchgavya, 2 from jeevamrit and 2 from FYM were preferred on the basis of maximum plant growth promoting traits like P-solubilization, Nitrogen fixer, Siderophore production, HCN production, IAA production and Antifungal activity. From the selected bacterial isolates 67.78% were P- solubilizers, 60.37% were Nitrogen fixer, 62.37% were Siderophore producer, 34.29% HCN producer, 45.88% IAA producer and 78.22% show antagonism against Pythium graminicolum and 74.81% show antagonism against Collectotrichum capsici. Hence these bacterial isolates have potential to act as biofertilizer for environment friendly sustainable agriculture systems and alternative to harmful chemicals
Effect of Vehicular Pollution on Chlorophyll Content of Roadside Plants
The influence of vehicular pollutants produced by automobiles on the chlorophyll leaves content has been investigated in the current study via comparative research. The leaves sample. Caesalpinia pulcherrima, Cassia tora, Bougainvillea spectrabilis, Lantana camera, Tacoma stans, and Cassia auriculata were gathered from areas with potentially greater vehicular pollution. Chlorophyll a and Chlorophyll b photosynthetic pigments are estimated. A decrease in the plant leaves’ photosynthetic pigments in areas with greater pollution levels as compared to areas without pollution
Assessment of Major Sheep Forage Types, Feeding System, and Nutritional Quality Assessment, Arsi Zone, Oromia Region, Ethiopia
The aim of this study was to assess the major sheep feed types, feeding system and its nutritional quality evaluation in Arsi Zone, Oromia Region, Ethiopia. A total of 100 households (hh) were taken from each district. For laboratory work, feed samples were collected from ten randomly selected farmers from each peasant association and nutrition composition like Dry matte, crude protein, Ash, Neutral detergent fiber, Acid detergent fiber, Acid detergent lignin, In vitro dry matter digestibility, Digestibility of organic dry mater were tested and Metabolizable Energy was calculated. The field survey data were analyzed using SPSS and SAS software used for nutritional composition test. The Pearson Chi-Square and Tukey HSD test was used to determine mean differences at (p < .05). The results of the field survey revealed that, the major feed resources available in both districts comprised of natural pasture (82%) followed by crop residue (25%) and Free grazing is the common feeding system in both districts. The overall mean of, Dry matter, Ash, crude protein, Neutral detergent fiber, Acid detergent fiber, Acid detergent lignin, In vitro dry matter digestibility, Digestibility of organic dry mater and Metabolizable Energy content of natural grasses were 89.5%, 5.9%, 68.5%, 68.5%, 37.1%, 4.9%, 55.5%, 43.8% and 7.4 KJ/kgDM, respectively. The corresponding values for barley straw were also 90.9%, 5.4%, 5.4%, 70.7%, 54.8%, 9.6% and 8.2 KJ/kgDM for Dry matter, Ash, Crude protein, Neutral detergent fiber, Acid detergent fiber, Acid detergent lignin and Metabolizable energy respectively. Significant (p < .05).) difference was seen on Ash and Digestibility of organic dry mater content in natural pasture between two districts and there was no significant difference on other composition It was concluded that, natural pasture and barley straw are the main sheep feed in area. Further studies are needed to see other feed resource and test nutritional composition
