    Get PDF
This study examined land degradation and its effect on rice production. This was achieved by investigating the effect of land degradation on the total factor productivity of rice farmers in Omor, Ayamelum Local Government Area (LGA), Anambra State, Nigeria. Three research questions and three hypotheses were formulated for the study. A descriptive survey research design was employed in the study. The population for the study was delimited to all rice farmers who are members of the rice producers’ cooperative society in the Omor community in Ayamelum LGA, Anambra state with a sample size of hundred (100) rice farmers selected from the population using a multistage sampling technique after grouping the farmers in clusters in cooperatives and those attached to the government’s Agricultural programs with regards to their villages. The study relied on primary sources of data which were obtained through surveys from first-hand interactions and the application of questionnaires to rice farmers in the Omor community. The Ordinary Least Square (OLS) regression analysis was employed to test the hypotheses. The study revealed a significant effect of Tillage degradation and Bush burning degradation. Water degradation was not significant. Consequent to the findings, the study, therefore, recommends amongst others that Bush burning is a major factor that reduces the quality of the soil. Hence, bush burning on the farmland should be restricted by state and federal law and properly monitored to ensure compliance in the area

    Get PDF
The fall armyworm (FAW) Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith) is a polyphagous pest that can attack numerous hosts and causes high damage. The present work was conducted at Bollworms Research Department under laboratory condition of (26 ± 2 °C, 70 ± 5 % RH) to study the possibility of rearing FAW on three different hosts, [Pisum Sativum (Pea), Lactuca sativa (Lettuce) and Ricinus communis (Castor)] and evaluate its biological parameters and growth index. Obtained results revealed that Pea was the best in rearing   FAW causing the lowest larval mortality (13.33%) and the fastest developmental time (30.33 days/total immature), followed by Lettuce (14.93% larval mortality and 32.37 days/total immature), compared to castor that produced the highest larval mortality percent (16.67%) with the slowest duration (33.29 days). In addition, rearing   FAW produced a higher fecundity (880.67eggs/female) which decreased significantly (663.38 and 616 eggs/female) for   Lettuce and castor, respectively. The growth and fitness index were highest on pea recorded 4.41 and 0.55 respectively, followed by Lettuce (3.98 and 0.47) while they were 3.74 and 0.42) for Castor host, respectively. Thus, Pea appears to be the most favorable host plant in rearing S. frugiperda compared to the other two hosts

Assessment in education such as computerized test has taken a new direction as another form of students’ assessment at different levels of education in Nigeria. This introduction of computerized tests for educational assessments geared this study on comparative analysis of academic achievement scores of students exposed to CBT and PPT in Economics. Three research questions were raised and answered. Three null hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance guided the study. The study utilized pretest-posttest non-randomized control group design involving experimental and control groups. The study was carried out in Asaba, capital of Delta State, Nigeria. 973 SS II students who offered Economics in ten co-educational secondary schools in the study area comprised the population of the study. The sample was 107 students who offered Economics in the schools selected. Economics Achievement Test (EAT) was the instrument for data collection. The instrument was validated by experts in Educational Measurement and Evaluation. The reliability coefficient of EAT was 0.9. Mean statistics was used to analyze the research questions while the null hypotheses were tested using ANCOVA. The findings revealed the that students’ mean achievement scores in PPT was slightly higher than students’ mean achievement scores in CBT and the students’ mean achievement scores were significantly different. The study recommended based on the findings that examination bodies, school authorities and other stake holders in education should use only PPT for all students’ assessments in various internal examinations conducted in the country

ESSENTIALS OF MANAGEMENT SYSTEM IN ENVIRONMENTAL MONITORING

    Get PDF
Environment is the surrounding or neighbourhood of man. Managing the environment is a tedious task, because the environment is everything to man. There are special and specific methods used for identifying the impact of projects on the environment. Environmental impact assessment, environmental monitoring and environmental auditing are some of the procedures in place to verify environmental impact of projects. The essence of Environmental management system is to enhance better environment update and to monitor some specific environmental elements of interest, such as air, water, land, vegetation, human, etc. The monitoring of environment includes the impacts of the project on the bio-geophysical of the environment, human wellbeing, and the involvement of stakeholders within the environment to determine the type of project suitable and friendly to their environment. The key interest is to achieve sustainable development using resources available within the area and meeting the international standard of safety. Stakeholders and experts in the field of environmental management system must synergise to achieve the best for the environment, flora, fauna and human. Diligent monitoring of environment is a vital check to environmental degradation and also a check on the environmental impact assessment, therefore it should not be undermined

The study aimed at identifying mosquito species associated with human activities, determined species composition, relative abundance and the seasonal variations of the mosquito species in Ikeduru L.G.A., Imo State, Nigeria. Mosquitoes were randomly sampled in the area using standard methods. Results on species composition and abundance of mosquitoes confirmed eight species. They were Aedes africanus (18.84%), A. aegypti (20.16%), A. taylori (4.14%), A. albopictus (17.53%), A. luteocephalus (5.88%), Anopheles gambiae (7.79%), Culex quinquefasciatus (22.88%) and C. vittatus (2.78%) belonging to three genera (Anopheles, Aedes and Culex). Culex quinquefasciatus, Aedes aegypti, Aedes africanus and Aedes albopictus were the most abundant species encountered in this study whereas, Anopheles spp. recorded a significantly lower number. The results indicated that Aedes aegypti and A. albopictus bred well in cassava/maize processing sites; A. albopictus bred in indiscriminately dumped tires; A. africanus and C. quinquefasciatus bred well in exposed stored water while A. aegypti, A. taylori, A. luteocephalus, Anopheles gambiae and Culex vittatus bred lowly in exposed septic tank and exposed stored water. Specific analysis revealed that fermenting/ cassava processing site had a relative high abundance of mosquitoes while exposed decorated pots and vessels had the least. Three mosquito genera implicated in this study were recorded monthly throughout the year and their populations were high from April to August with peaks between June and July followed by a decline that persisted to March of the following year. Culex mosquitoes were consistently more abundant on monthly basis compared to Aedes and Anopheles. The peak population period of the mosquito genera coincided with high rainfall experienced between June and August annually in Nigeria. This has implications for effective control and therefore, time-specific interventions are necessary

This study empirically examined the impact of community development and waste management disclosure on corporate liquidity in Nigeria. The study’s independent variables include community development disclosure and waste management disclosure while the dependent variable is company liquidity which was proxy as cash ratio. Two hypotheses were formulated for this study. An ex post facto design was used and data for the study was sourced from the published annual financial reports of all 41 companies listed on the sectors of Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX) with the data covering the period of 2015-2021. Thus, the study found that disclosures on community development and waste management have a significant impact on the liquidity of firms in Nigeria at 5% level of significance. Based on this, the study concludes that disclosures on community development and waste management have positively improved the liquidity of companies over the years. In lieu of the study’s findings, it was recommended that companies should disclose more of this information in their annual reports, as the level of disclosure of environmental practices has a significant impact on companies' liquidity
