Effect of Seed Hardening on Morphological, Growth and Yield Parameters of Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.)
A field experiment was conducted at Main Agriculture Research Station, University of Agricultural sciences, Dharwad during rabi 2021-22 to study the impact of seed hardening chemical Aminolevulinic acid (ALA) on morphological, biochemical parameters and yield in Chickpea (var. JG-11). The experiment was laid out in randomized block design with three replications. The treatments consist of seed hardening with Aminolevulinic acid at different concentrations (10, 20, 30, 40, 50 ppm) and CaCl2 (2%). The results of the investigation revealed that, among the treatments the seed soaking with Aminolevulinic acid @ 30 ppm has registered significantly highest plant height, number of primary branches per plant, and total dry matter and SPAD value followed by 2% CaCl2. Whereas it was lowest in control in all the parameters. The growth parameters viz., leaf area index, absolute growth rate, crop growth rate, relative growth rate, net assimilation rate and leaf area duration increased significantly with seed hardening treatments. yield and yield components increased significantly due to seed hardening with Aminolevulinic acid (30 ppm) followed by 2% CaCl2 as compared to control. The economics of chickpea was highest with 2 % CaCl2 compared to aminolevulinic acid @ 30 ppm. As per the results obtained seed hardening with Aminolevulinic acid (30 ppm) and CaCl2 (2%) are more effective in increasing drought tolerance in chickpea
Zinc Availability in Calcareous Soil as Influenced by Various Levels, Sources of Zn and Zn Solubilizing Bacteria
Zinc is one among the micronutrients essential for the growth and development of crops. Application of inorganic zinc fertilizers to mitigate Zn deficiency is relatively ineffective since it gets converted into unavailable forms. Microbial transformation of Zn from unavailable form to soil available form is an important approach contributing to plant Zn nutrition. An incubation experiment was conducted to study the transformation of Zn in calcareous soil. The results of incubation experiment revealed that application of Zn fertilizers with Zinc Solublizing Bacteria (ZSB) reduced the soil pH, increased the EC and DTPA-Zn content of the soil. It was found that ZnSO4 addition at 7.5 kg Zn ha-1 along with ZSB (Enterobacter cloacae) was considered to be the best Zn management strategy in calcareous soil for sustaining Zn availability to crops
Effect of Potassium Fertigation Levels on Jalapeno Pepper Growth in Red Bole Soil under Polyhouse Conditions
A field experiment was conducted at Instructional Farm Polyhouse, Dr. Sharadchandra Pawar College of Agriculture, Baramati during June 2023 to September 2023. The study aimed to investigate the Influence of Graded levels of Potassium Fertigation on Growth of Jalapeno Pepper Grown in Red Bole Soil Under Polyhouse. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Block Design (RBD) with four replications. The treatments were five, viz., T1- Control, T2- Recommended dose of fertilizer, T3- Recommended dose of nitrogen and phosphorus (RDNP) + 125% Recommended dose of potassium (RDK), T4- Recommended dose of nitrogen and phosphorus (RDNP) + 150% Recommended dose of potassium (RDK) and T5- Recommended dose of nitrogen and phosphorus (RDNP) + 175% Recommended dose of potassium (RDK). Data were taken on growth contributing characters and the collected data were statistically analyzed for evaluation of the treatment effects. Data on growth parameters, including plant height, leaf area and chlorophyll content, were recorded at 20, 35, 50 and 65 days after transplanting (DAT) and analyzed statistically. The results indicated that the maximum plant height (95.65 cm), leaf area (61.61 dm²) and chlorophyll content (58.83) at 65 DAT were significantly higher in treatment T5 (RDNP + 175% RDK). This study concludes that the application of RDNP + 175% RDK via fertigation from 10 DAT to 60 DAT is optimal for the growth of Jalapeno pepper in red bole soil under polyhouse conditions, highlighting its potential for improving crop yield and quality
Assessment of Packaging Materials for Bulk Packaging of Mustard
A study was conducted to develop effective bulk packaging solutions for mustard, focusing on testing various packaging materials with liners and analysing shelf life for export purposes. To maintain the quality of spices, it is crucial to have oxygen and gas barrier properties to preserve aroma. To address this, a novel liner combination has been introduced to evaluate its effectiveness in extending the shelf life of mustard. Mustard was packed in nine types of packaging materials selected based on sustainability aspects and subjected to accelerated climatic conditions (38±1°C and 90±2% RH) for six months. Physico-chemical parameters were measured in triplicate. Throughout the exposure period, moisture content and water activity in the mustard increased exponentially. Significant changes in colour, aroma, and microbial growth were observed in samples packaged in PP woven bags without liners and multiwall paper bags. However, no damage to the packaging materials was noted during transport testing. The maximum shelf life was recorded for mustard packed in PP woven bags with liners and multiwall paper bags with aluminium foil. Hence, the results indicated that exploring advanced liner combinations can significantly enhance the shelf life and maintain the quality of mustard
Validation of Early Maturing Sugarcane Clones for Yield and Juice Quality Traits
The present investigation in sugarcane (Saccharumspp. hybrids) was carried out to evaluate and validate the performance of early duration clones for cane yield and quality characters at sugarcane Research Station (TNAU) Cuddalore, Tamil Nadu. Observations were recorded fornumber of tillers (x1000/ha), cane length (cm), cane diameter (cm), single cane weight (kg), cane yield (t/ha) Brix (%), sucrose (%), Purity (%), CCS (%) and sugar yield (t/ha).Overall performance of field trial, the clone, CoC 11336 was found to be best for cane yield and its contributing traits like number of millable canes, cane length, cane diameter and single cane weight over the check CoA 92081. The same clone CoC 11336 was found to be top performer for CCS yield. The test clone CoA 12321 was the next entry for cane yield, quality and its contributing traits. The clone CoV 12356 was found to be better for quality traits viz.,brix %, sucrose %, CCS % and purity % over the check variety CoA 92081.Hence, these three early clones could be tested for the confirmation of the results for better cane yield and juice quality under different agro climatic locations for release of new sugarcane variety
Effect of Biofertilizers on Soil Quality Parameters in Gerbera (Gerbera jamesonii bolus) Cultivation
A field experiment was carried out at the Experimental Farm, Department of Horticulture, Assam Agricultural University, Jorhat, during the periods of 2015-2016 and 2016-2017. The experiment was set in Randomized Block Design (RBD) consisting of three replications and eight treatments. The Treatments comprised of T0 (Control), T1 {Bacillus subtilis (4% solution)}, T2 {Microbacterium laevaniformans (4% solution)}, T3 NPK (@15:10:20 g m-2), T4 Vermicompost (5 kg per plot), T5 (½ NPK + ½ Vermicompost + Bacillus subtilis), T6 (½ NPK + ½ Vermicompost + Microbacterium laevaniformans), T7 (½ NPK + ½ Vermicompost + Consortium) and T8 (Consortium). The results revealed that the soil parameters were significantly influenced by the treatments. Studies revealed that soil pH (5.26), Organic Carbon (0.86%), N (276.9 kg ha-1), K (135.1kg ha-1), Microbial Biomass Carbon (379.23µg g-1soil 24 hour-1) were found highest in T4. For P (44.6 kg ha-1) and Electrical Conductivity (0.19 dS/m) was recorded highest in treatment T7
Effect of Foliar Application of Growth Retardants on Reproductive Efficiency of Groundnut (ArachishypogaeaL.) Genotypes
A field experiment entitled “Study on foliar application of Plant growth regulators for improving reproductive efficiency and yield of Groundnut (ArachishypogaeaL.) genotypes” was carried out during Rabi, 2023-24 at wetland farm of S. V. Agricultural College, Tirupati campus of Acharya N. G. Ranga Agricultural University, Andhra Pradesh. This experiment was laid out in randomized block design with factorial concept and replicated thrice, with four genotypes as factor-1 (G1-Nithyaharitha, G2-Dharani, G3-K-6, G4-Vishista) and four plant growth regulators applied on as Factor-2 (T1- Control + RDF of NPK, T2-Prohexadione calcium@105g a.i/ha,T3- Putrescine@100 ppm, T4- Paclobutrazol@ 100 ppm applied before and at peak flowering stage of crop). The reproductive efficiency attributes viz., number of flowers, pegs and pods per plant, flower to peg ratio, flower to pod ratio and length of peg were recorded and analysed to understand the influence of plant growth regulators on groundnut. G1 recorded highest number for pegs per plant (54.6), total pods per plant (36.8), mature pods per plant (28.5) and lowest flower to peg ratio (2.8), lowest length of peg (5.0cm). whereas G2 showed lowest flower to pod ratio (4.3). Treatment of T2 resulted in highest number of pegs per plant (51.8), total pods per plant (36.9), mature pods per plant (29.7), lowest flower to peg ratio (2.6), minimum length of peg (5.2 cm) lowest flower to pod ratio (3.6) and lowest number of flowers per plant (134.9) compared to the other treatments. Nityaharita and Prohexadione calcium@105g a.i/ha resulted in better reproductive efficiency in groundnut
Enhancing Maize Productivity through Mulching Practices in Semi-Arid Regions, Gujarat (India): Impact on Yield, Water Use Efficiency, and Economic Viability
Plastic film mulching (PF) was extensively used to improve maize yields, but its continuous application with ridge-furrow practices led to a significant depletion of soil organic carbon (SOC) and soil water storage (SWS). A study conducted during the 2018–19 rabi season on sandy loam soils evaluated the impact of different mulching techniques—Reflective Silver Plastic Mulch (RSPM), Rice Straw Mulch (RSM), Biodegradable Mulch (BM), and control without mulching (CK)—under irrigation regimes defined by IW/CPE ratios of 0.6, 0.8, and 1.0. The highest grain yields were achieved with an IW/CPE ratio of 1.0, with Reflective Silver Plastic Mulch significantly outperforming other treatments in grain yield (7086.57 kg/ha) and water use efficiency (WUE), followed by Biodegradable Mulch and Rice Straw Mulch. Reflective Silver Plastic Mulch also enhanced all major yield attributes, particularly when combined with the highest irrigation level, while the lowest values were observed under minimal irrigation and no mulch. The study concluded that irrigation at an IW/CPE ratio of 1.0 combined with Reflective Silver Plastic Mulch optimized maize yield, water use efficiency, and economic returns under drip irrigation
Yield Comparison of Sweet Potato Grown in Four Commercial Organic Soils
Aims: The experiment was conducted to observe the effects on comparative yields of sweet potato (Ipomea batatas ‘Beauregard’) grown in four different soilless media.

Place and Duration of Study: Pullen Farm at Murray State University, in Murray, Kentucky, USA., between May 2018 and August 2018.
Methodology: 16 3.048m x .3046m troughs (four of each treatment) each containing five sweet potato plants were established. No treatments received supplemental fertilization. Descriptive statistics and quantitative analysis were performed on yield characteristics of the sweet potato crop (sweet-potato tuber and biomass yields).
Results: While a significant difference in mass of above-ground biomass between the treatments could not be determined, growth parameters of the Organiloc treatments (A, B) were marginally greater than treatments C and D (Table 1). The fresh weight of treatments A (38.91 t ha-1) and B (42.75 t ha-1) were statistically greater than treatment C (21.23 t ha-1). Treatment B was also statistically greater that treatment D (23.92 t ha-1). The number of tubers in treatment A and B were not significantly different than treatment D, but were significantly greater than treatment C (Fig. 2).
Conclusion: The results of this one cropping season study suggest that yields of sweet potatoes grown in these two biochar-based treatments (A + B), in which they were statistically greater than the Miracle Gro treatment (C), and Treatment B was statistically greater than the Magic Dirt treatment (D), may help to fulfill the increasing demand for locally-produced food and agricultural products while providing an efficient means of disposing of agricultural waste products and may promote sustainable crop production and food security
Assessing Climate Change Perceptions and Adaptation Strategies among Sesame Farmers in Yobe State, Nigeria
The study was conducted on sesame farmers\u27 perception of climate change on sesame production in Bade Local Government Area of Yobe State, Nigeria. A sample of 125 farmers was selected for the study. Data was collected on the socioeconomic characteristics of the farmers, their perception of climate change, sources of information, their adoption of adaptation strategies, and their constraints on sesame production. Descriptive statistics such as means, percentages and Likert scale were used to analyze the data. The results show that male farmers (80.0%) dominated sesame production. The mean age was 35.03 years, and most (64.0%) farmers were married. Most (56.8%) respondents had an unfavorable perception of climate change. The primary source of information on climate change was other farmers (86.4%). Most (52.8%) respondents had a low adoption of climate change adaptation strategies. The majority (53.6%) of the respondents faced high constraints to sesame production. It was recommended that agricultural extension services be revived to disseminate climate change information to sesame farmers so as to improve their control measures to climate change with the view to enhance sesame production
