Teaching Tip on 'How Volcanoes Work'
Next year my general petrology course will morph into Igneous Petrology and Volcanology. I intend to make far greater use of this site for that course since volcanology will be a major section. I will prepare my own question sets that will require students to use the site.

Teaching Tip on 'Grand Canyon Exercise: Geological Time, History, and Sedimentary Environments.'
Ask yourself how could this area provide an environment for marine life for one era, and then for quadripeds the next. The answer will surprise you and enlighten you.
Teaching Tip on 'The Global Sun Temperature Project'
Teach the students military time before they begin.
Teaching Tip on 'USGS: General Interest Publications - Earthquakes (title provided or enhanced by cataloger)'
Click on any and all links that are in the reading because these links are really helpful. Some of these are interactive and fun to go through. Sometimes it seems tedious but it really helps you learn.
Teaching Tip on 'Explorations Through Time'
It might be nice to have more information about the fossils that they have shown.
Teaching Tip on 'Scientists in Action!'
There are a number of examples given in this resource of geoscientists doing interesting work in interesting places. While the resource is good at showing the diversity of the work, there may be simply too many case studies and students tend to get tired of reading "one more example." A better way to use this resource is to have students pick three or four of the examples and read them and then respond to simple questions that can be used as "talking points" for discussion in class. The resource is valuable for discussion in the early part of an introductory geoscience class, introducing the wide range and diversity of the geosciences.
Teaching Tip on 'GLOBE 2003 Teacher's Guide: Soil Chapter'
This website had great activities to help students understand important concepts of soil. The activities presented can be easily modified for space and the materials seem easy to find for the most part. I did not teach these lessons but I think I would use this website to help me with ideas for my more kinesthetic learners. Students are learning through inquiry and are able to easily connect this to their lives because it is literally in their backyard.
