Epo's Chronicles
Epo's Chronicles is a weekly web comic which takes place in the distant future. The comic follows a fictional storyline incorporating both recent and classic scientific discoveries from NASA missions while educating the reader. The primary goal of Epo's Chronicles is to teach space science in an engaging format. Accompanying each episode are explanatory notes and glossary entries to help explain the science subjects discussed each week. Additional resources such as web links with lesson plans and multimedia clips are also frequently available. The comic is available in English, Spanish, Italian and French. MY NASA DATA: Coral Bleaching in the Caribbean
In this lesson, students collect sea surface temperature (SST) data from the MY NASA DATA Live Access Server (LAS), create time-series line plots, and use the plots to study a major coral bleaching event. Corals feed on algae that thrive in the sunlit water surrounding a reef. However, when water temperatures get too warm, the algae food source dies and corals turn a whitish color. Through scientific observation, it has been determined that coral bleaching may occur when SST exceeds 30C or 86F for a week or longer. During late 2005, a major coral bleaching event, selected for study in this lesson, occurred as a result of these conditions in the Caribbean Sea. Explorador de la Frontera Interestelar-Poster
This poster outlines the major mission highlights of the Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX) mission, a Small Explorer Earth-orbiting spacecraft that is designed to map the distant boundary between the solar wind from our Sun and the interstellar medium. The poster aims to answer the following questions: • What is IBEX and what is it exploring? • How does IBEX explore the boundary of our Solar System? • How do scientists communicate with the spacecraft? • How do we launch IBEX? • What will we learn from IBEX, and how will it help us? This poster supports a full-length planetarium show about the IBEX mission and the boundary of the Solar System. Each short activity/product helps to build awareness and engagement in the science and engineering aspects of the mission that is reinforced as visitors choose to participate in more activities, including viewing the Show and the mission website. Space Math: Lunar Math
This booklet includes 17 problems relating to the Moon and its exploration. Images from NASA are analyzed to determine image scales and the physical sizes of various crates and features. The probability of meteor impacts near a lunar colony are calculated, and the horizon distance is determined using simple geometry. Also covered are: determining the mass of the Moon, a simple model for the lunar interior, heat flow rates, extracting oxygen from lunar rock, and lunar transits and eclipses.
