Achieving Orbit
In this Engineering Design Challenge activity, participants use balloons to investigate how a two-stage rocket, like that used in the IBEX mission, can propel a satellite to a specific orbit. Participants will construct a two-stage balloon that will be required to reach a particular location on the balloon track, simulating the proper orbit to be reached by the IBEX satellite. This activity is adapted from the NASA Rockets Educators Guide (EG-2003-01-108-HQ) and the NASA Glenn Research Center’s online Learning Technologies Project for facilitation with an informal museum audience. Each short activity/product helps to build awareness and engagement in the science and engineering aspects of the mission that is reinforced as visitors choose to participate in more activities, including viewing the planetarium show and mission Web site. Educational levels: Informal education, General public
Ozone: The Good and the Bad
The front of this poster is a cartoon profile of the atmosphere, showing the “good and bad” roles of ozone in the stratosphere, high troposphere, mid-troposphere, and surface. The back contains six panels that can be photocopied separately. It is a classroom activity article, beginning with an explanation of ozone’s roles, and an introduction to spectroscopy. Also included are detailed instructions for building a spectroscope using a CD or a DVD. (Folded color poster, 22”W x 25-1/2”H.) Educational levels: Middle school, High school
Earth Calling...
This hands-on activity explores spacecraft radio communication concepts, including the speed of light and the time-delay for signals sent to and from spacecraft. Educational levels: Middle school
Chandra Activity and Coloring Book
This 24-page coloring and activity book includes general information on x-ray astronomy, NASA's Chandra mission and the STS-93 mission. It is intended for parents to use with their children. The Chandra mission investigates black holes, supernovae, and galaxy clusters. Activities include a maze, word search, connect-the-dots and word jumble. Educational levels: Intermediate elementary, Primary elementary
22 Years of Sea Surface Temperature Changes
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's polar-orbiting satellites (POES) have been collecting sea surface temperature data since 1985. This animation is a compilation of all of the data collected from POES from 1985-2006. Red colors indicate warm water, blue equals cold. Look for recurrent features such as the Gulf Stream, El Nino and La Nina, and seasonal changes in heat content. Educational levels: Middle school, High school, Undergraduate lower division
Weather and the Built Environment
The National Environmental Education Foundation (NEEF), American Meteorological Society (AMS), and Cooperative Program for Meteorological Education and Training (COMET) have developed the second in a suite of free online courses related to weather and the environment. This one-hour course provides an overview of the evolution of our modern urban environment with a focus on impacts on the watershed, air quality, and climate. Each unit in the course also includes information on ways to reduce our impact on water and air. Although the initial target audience was broadcast meteorologists, the course has proven to be a useful learning tool for educators, landscape architects, and others. The course is available online, with free registration required. Educational levels: High school, Undergraduate lower division, Undergraduate upper division, Graduate or professional, Informal education
Hurricane Data Analysis Tool
The Hurricane Data Analysis Tool (formerly the TRMM QuikScat Analysis tool) allows users to overlay various data products relevant in the study of hurricanes in either an area plot or a time plot using an interactive tool. The data products being offered include TRMM's product 3B42, TMI's sea surface temperature, NCEP Reanalysis sea level pressure, QuikScat's wind and global Merged IR product. This tool is beneficial for users to obtain a visualization of a single product, animation or a comparison of two products during a hurricane event. Educational levels: Middle school, High school, Undergraduate lower division, Undergraduate upper division, Graduate or professional
MY NASA DATA: Tropical Atlantic Aerosols
This activity allows students to use real satellite data to determine where the greatest concentrations of aerosols are located in the tropical Atlantic region during the course of a year and their source of origin. Educational levels: Middle school
Coma Cluster Activity Using Hubble Space Telescope Data
This product uses a collection of Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images of galaxies in the Coma Cluster, and engages students in an inquiry-based learning activity studying the evolution of galaxies in dense clustered environments. Students learn the basics of galaxy classification by making use of the HST images to discover a "morphology-density effect," and will then make hypotheses about the cause of this effect. Along with this product are a series of StarDate Radio programs on the Coma Cluster and its related galaxies, and a brief YouTube video about research that is being conducted by astronomers and students at the University of Texas using HST data of the Coma Cluster. Educational levels: High school, High school
Chandra: Ask An Astrophysicist
This is a collection of questions relevant to the science and mission of the Chandra X-Ray Observatory, submitted by students and the general public, posted with answers by experts in the field. Questions are organized in categories such as cosmology, black holes, normal stars, dark matter, etc. Educational levels: Middle school, High school, Undergraduate lower division, Middle school, High school, Undergraduate lower division, Informal education
