Elementary GLOBE: Water Wonders
Students will be introduced to different species of macroinvertebrates. They will hypothesize why each insect looks the way it does. Then students will make observations of macroinvertebrates in an aquarium in their classroom. For an optional extension, teachers can take students to a local stream or pond to conduct field observations. The purpose of this activity is to introduce students to hydrology and the study of macroinvertebrates and to understand how macroinvertebrates help scientists understand water quality. MY NASA DATA : Hurricanes As Heat Engines Lesson
In this lesson, students create graphs to explore how hurricanes extract heat energy from the ocean surface. It is designed to help students gain knowledge in using the MY NASA DATA Live Access Server (LAS) to specify, download and use a microset of data. Students will make graphs from the data microset, then use the graphs to investigate locations along the track of Hurricane Rita where lowered Sea Surface Temperature is observed. It provides useful charts and vocabulary for learning about the different phases. It also supplies viewers with a great calendar in order to show what phase the moon will be in on a particular day. This site is a great way for new learners to understand what they see when they look up at the sky every evening.

Space Math: Image Scale Math
This booklet contains 11 problems and nine ‘Extra for Experts’ challenges that require the student to determine the scale of an astronomical image involving the lunar surface, Mars, planets, stars and galaxies. With a millimeter ruler, students use provided textual information to determine the image scale (e.g. kilometers per millimeter) and then identify the smallest and largest features in the images according to their actual physical sizes. These problems involve measurement, dividing whole numbers, decimal mathematics, and scaling principles.
