This module introduces a variety of meteorological and hydrological products that can improve the quality of heavy rainfall forecasts and assist with hydrological management during extensive precipitation events in Southern Africa. Among the products are the satellite-based ASCAT, SMOS, and ASAR GM soil moisture products and the hydro-estimator. Cool Cosmos: The Infrared Zoo Website
As students tour this online Infrared Zoo, they gather new information about the animals they would not get from a visible light picture. Infrared light shows us the heat radiated by the world around us. By viewing animals with a thermal infrared camera, we can actually see the differences between warm and cold-blooded animals. Infrared also allows us to study how well feathers, fur and blubber insulate animals. Educational levels: High school
Earth Math
This text explores a few of the many concepts that frequently come up in the study of Earth systems and global climate change. Students will be exposed to many problems involving unit conversion. Global climate change reports involve terms such as kilowatt-hour, megawatt-hour, and gigawatt-hour, as well as megatons and gigatons. Students will become versed in converting units where appropriate, and through the calculations, will work with the concept of significant figures. Creating linear equations from graphical and tabular information is covered, as well as forecasting. The text is meant to be used as a companion to standard Earth science and mathematics courses, and presents enough application problems to allow students to quantitatively understand typical media reports about global climate change. Space Place Live: Episode with Andre Dress of the GOES project
In this episode of Space Pace Live, the kids interview a cartoon version of the GOES satellite Deputy Project scientists, Andre Dress. Andre works at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. He talked with Kate and Kyro about the new GOES-O (Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites) weather satellite as it was being prepared for launch. NASA Space Place Web site for kids presents the Space Place (cartoon) kids hosting their own talk show “live” from the Space Place Clubhouse. Their guests are NASA scientists and engineers. The goal of “Space Place Live!” is to introduce kids to the human, down-to-Earth side of real scientists and engineers working in the space program. This is an electromagnetic spectrum science program that incorporates engineering, math, and solar system data stories that use mission data to explain how light is used to explore the solar system. A set of foundational lessons accompanies the program, helping students understand spectroscopy at a basic level. The data stories include paper and pencil versions, as well as Flash-based interactives where students delve more deeply into the missions and science behind the data. Manual for Afterschool Universe
This astronomy program is designed for middle school children in out-of-school-time settings. The program explores basic astronomy concepts (like invisible light, telescopes) and focuses on the universe outside the solar system (stars, galaxies, black holes). By offering programming on these topics outside of the classroom, where schedules are less constrained, Afterschool Universe engages students in science and keeps them interested. Afterschool Universe consists of 12 sessions, each typically requiring 45-60 minutes for implementation. The program is flexibly structured for use in a variety of settings, including astronomy days, summer camps, or year-long afterschool programming. Although sessions build concepts when attended sequentially, each session is intended to be freestanding as not all participants may attend every session. A comprehensive manual provides background information and detailed descriptions of how to conduct each activity. The manual has been written for leaders with little science background. A companion Wweb siteWeb site provides additional information and resources for the program leader. All the activities are done “in the real world” and do not require a computer. Comment on What is the Greenhouse Effect?
This activity has outdated information, such as, "C02 stays in the atmosphere for 10-20 years." I am reading that scientists now think it stays for a century or more. Also they downplay the significance of methane. This currently (2009) is one of the worries with climate change. Methane is being released at an increasing rate from melting tundra and recently discovered bubbling up in the Arctic seas.
