Amazing Space Star Witness News Article: Hubble is Back in Business
This article features the Early Release Observations following SM4. The Star Witness News articles are science content readings for upper elementary to middle school students. Current Hubble science content is presented at a grade-appropriate level and includes definitions of unfamiliar terms and a set of discussion questions with answers. The articles are based on Hubble press releases, which are identified for the educator in the overview pages and are chosen based on their timeliness and alignment with national science education standards. Impact Earth
This planetarium show teaches about meteors, meteorites, asteroids, and comets. It includes results from NASA missions and about the dangers they can pose to life on Earth. It is created for full-dome theaters but can also be shown in flat version for TVs and computer monitors. Shows the effects of the Chixulub and Tungusta events, plus the Pallasite impact that resulted in the Brenham meteorite fall. Describes ways that asteroid hunters seek new objects in the Solar System, and how ground-penetrating radar is used to find meteorites that have reached the Earth's surface and ancient craters under the desert. Narrated by astronaut Tom Jones, it also discusses ways that humans might try to deflect an asteroid or comet that is on a collision course with Earth. Created for informal science venues (digital planetariums), it is also useful as ancillary material for middle school science. Comment on Wallace Creek Interpretive Trail: A Geologic Guide to the San Andreas Fault at Wallace Creek
This is a perfect example of what I was looking for to design an interpretive trail in a local open space. Not knowing what the future holds for the site, it offers a chance to create a virtual tour that is set in time.
Environmental Issues: Land Use Change
This interdisciplinary technology-embedded middle school science unit focuses on how human activities influence environmental changes related to land use. Students use geospatial information technology (GIT) tools including Google Earth and remotely sensed images to investigate modern day land use issues and land use change over time. It was designed using the Understanding by Design framework and is aligned to national science and geography standards. The unit has modified materials from the NASA-sponsored Mission Geography curricular module, Human footprints on Earth as seen by NASA scientists to take advantage of available, user-friendly geospatial technologies. The materials have been pilot-tested and field-tested in 8th grade classrooms at Broughal Middle School, a technology-rich urban school. Educational levels: Middle school, High school
Gamma Ray and Neutron Detector Interactive
This product illustrates how scientists learn about the composition of an asteroid by studying energy and neutrons that emanate from it. The Dawn spacecraft contains three instruments -- the Gamma Ray and Neutro Detector (GRaND), the Visible Infrared Spectrometer, and the Framing Camera -- that will provide answers to questions about the formation and evolution of the early solar system. Fermi Paper Model (Formerly GLAST Paper Model)
This paper model provides a short description of the scientific instruments on board GLAST as well as links to other resources about the GLAST instruments. There is also a short description of how GLAST detects gamma-rays with the Large Area Telescope as well as the GLAST Burst Monitor detectors. The product includes three pages of parts that can be cut out and easily assembled using common household items. What is Your Cosmic Connection to the Elements?
This Web site is the on-line version of a poster and educator guide describing the cosmic origin of the chemical elements. The poster illustrates our connection to the chemical elements and their origins. The educator guide describes the different processes responsible for the elements, and gives eight standards-based activities. MyPhysicsLab: Physics Simulation with Java
This collection of physics animations lets students see and understand the principles behind the motion of objects under different circumstances, including single and double springs, pendulums, roller coasters, and various combinations of these. Users can vary the parameters of the animations (mass, spring elasticity and length, track shape, gravitational acceleration, and others) and see how the motion changes. Many of the animations are accompanied by graphs that trace position, acceleration, velocity, angle of motion, and other parameters. There are also two simulations of collisions of objects. Each simulation is also accompanied by the mathematics that governs the motions being illustrated, and some feature puzzle questions.
