EPOXI Mission: Comet on a Stick
In this activity, students examine their concepts of a comet by designing and building a model. The goal is to have students replicate the scientific processes of observing, modeling, forming an explanation, making new observations, and revising. In this manner, students have the opportunity to emulate the experience of scientific discovery that makes science so exciting. Younger students will learn the basic characteristics of a comet. Older students will practice evaluation and improvement of their comet model. The importance of this activity is not the initial design and construction of the comet model, but rather the fact that it will provide an opportunity for students to emulate a process that scientists and engineers follow on all missions. GLAST Large Area Telescope Simulator
The main scientific instrument on the Gamma-ray Large Area Space Telescope (GLAST) is the Large Area Telescope (LAT). This interactive computer-based educational activity allows students in grades 11-14 and informal web users to see the results when gamma-ray photons of different energies and incident angles hit the LAT. The photons convert into electron-positron pairs which travel through 19 interleaved layers of silicon into the cesium-iodide calorimeter. Background information about the mission and the LAT is also provided, which is part of the Virtual Visitor Center site for the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. Space Weather Action Center
This is a revised "Tracking a Solar Storm-Student Observation Network" with a new format and Web site. The Space Weather Action Center (SWAC) allows students to use near real time data and track a solar storm. By following the basic steps in the Instructional Guide students can access, analyze and record NASA satellite and observatory data. There is a downloadable 'step-by-step' Educator's Setup Guide where you will find a variety of recommendations and diagrams detailing how to construct a fully functional SWAC while keeping potential limitations on space and technology in mind.
