Comment on 'Ocean Explorer'
This resource is fantastic!! Any teacher could use this resource. The visuals, diagrams, and maps are great. All of the material is very interesting. The explore expeditions in video format would be great to use as a visual during a power point presentation. The site would also be a great resource to use for a webquest. There is a lot of valuable information in this resource that would be fun for students to use as a webquest scavenger hunt.
Teaching Tip on 'Chem 4 Kids'
I designed a web quest for my students to follow as they navigated through the Chem4Kids website. This strategy allowed me to focus my students on the key concepts needed for the remainder of my instructional unit.

Radiosonde Database Access
The radiosonde real-time archive is comprised of all North American Global Telecommunications Service (GTS) observations primarily from Northern and Central American civilian and some military radiosonde sites not yet available on CD-ROM (currently 1997 thru 1999). Since late 1998, the archive has been upgraded to include all international observations transmitted via GTS. These data undergo extensive gross error and hydrostatic consistency checks before being incorporated into a randomly accessible compressed data archive developed at the Forecast Systems Laboratory (FSL). Data is stored in the same randomly accessible compressed data format, and is customizable in terms of input dates and source stations. Natural Hazards
This lesson introduces students to a variety of natural hazards, emphasizing that when people understand these threats they are better able to avoid or reduce their potential impacts. First, the class discusses what they know about natural hazards and natural disasters. Then, working in pairs, they research particular hazards; the threats they pose and where and when those threats are most pronounced. Following this research period, the class assembles what they have learned into a general overview of natural hazards nationwide. Following the second class discussion, students work in pairs again to explore the hazards that affect particular towns, cities, or regions of the country. In doing so, they learn more about how and why certain natural hazards impact specific areas, as well as what people are doing to minimize the threats these hazards pose. Upwelling Zones: Teaching Resources
Upwelling Zones is a highly interactive, data-rich module designed for students to explore two of the world's most important upwelling systems, the California coast and the equatorial Pacific Ocean, using inquiry-based tools that allow them to track and analyze temperature, wind, and chlorophyll data. Worksheets include step-by-step instructions on investigating the two study areas. An extension activity helps students discover the relationships among upwelling, density, temperature, and salinity off the coast of Monterey, California. NewsHour Extra Lesson Plan: Are the World's Weather and Climate Changing?
Looking at past weather patterns, weather cycles, and what causes these patterns and cycles can help students understand more about the type of weather events we are experiencing. This lesson plan involves students in class discussion and research, and has them create an interactive project/presentation that can be used to teach classmates about a weather topic. They will first take a quiz to see what they already know about the topic, form hypotheses about changes in the weather, and divide into groups of two to to conduct research and create an interactive project or presentation that they can use to teach their classmates about the topic they have been assigned. Blending Science and Art with Landsat (Lena River Delta Lithograph)
This lithograph of the Lena River Delta is part of a collection of images of the Earth from space called, Landsat: Earth as Art. The images are designed to capture the attention of people who might not otherwise be interested in remote sensing. The images link the disciplines of science and art, and can be used to teach how the creative aspects of those disciplines employ similar human skills. The lithograph aims to help parents investigate the images with children ages 7-10. It encourages children and their parents to recognize patterns made in the surface of the Earth and is designed to help them see the inherent beauty of the Earth from space.
