    Learning from the experiences of a kura kaupapa Māori graduate

    This ATLAANZ 2022 conference presentation was based on the experiences of an interviewee in the author’s research on students’ experiences and perceptions of learning support services at Toi Ohomai Te Pūkenga (Toi Ohomai). The interviewee had graduated from a Kura Kaupapa Māori (KKM) in a small town, where they had studied science in te reo Māori. At Toi Ohomai, they felt unable to disclose to the tutor of their English-medium, science-based course that they were not familiar with the vocabulary being used. The tutor, meanwhile, assumed all their learners knew the English terms. The interviewee described how in class they “felt dumb”. At the same time, they were trying to adjust to life in a city which was very different. I reflected on how KKM graduates could be better supported. I concluded that if Toi Ohomai tutors and staff had a way to identify KKM graduates, they could proactively offer them support and resources. I explored options for identifying ākonga from Māori-medium education in the Toi Ohomai learning management system. I then spoke with the Head of Māori Success at Toi Ohomai, who discussed the idea with colleagues. An alternative approach was agreed upon, based on the core practice of knowing the learner

    The changing role of accounting: Asking the right questions

    The role of accountants is evolving with changes in technology and the business environment. These have triggered an opportunity for accountants to embrace a more consultative role and adding value to clients as business partners rather than contractors. While some accountants have already started down this pathway, the journey remains unchartered and with few guideposts. Artificial intelligence may provide answers more efficiently than any human, without a will and purpose, it remains unsuited to asking questions. The paper suggests a business inquiry model that has been fashioned from other disciplines including medicine and education. The model builds on the traditional analysis already being carried out and incorporates analogical thinking, experiential data from previous cases and research and the wealth of contextual knowledge dormant with big data. The model continues to follow the traditional pathway of problem inquiry through to solution rather than the opportunistic approach of solution-need pairs or data mining. The model has the potential of being incorporated in a structured and formal manner into the education and training programmes for future accountants and may become a value addition to the learning outcomes outlined in the technical and professional competencies required by the accounting profession

    Due to a significant skills shortage within the metal trades, the purpose of this research project was to identify if the metal trades ’brand’ is outdated or out of touch with the current work-ready generation of students, and if so, what paths can this industry explore to attract young people into the industry. This research aimed to determine ‘How relevant is the metal trades brand for work-ready students to consider as a serious career option?’ by exploring these underlying themes: 1. Is the metal trade and the perception of its brand suitable as a recruiting tool? 2. What attracts work-ready school students to a particular career path? 3. What are the drivers and influencers of their decisions? A mixed-method approach gathered data through a quantitative survey and semi-structured qualitative interviews. Students in the Otago region participated in an online survey to assist with interview questions discussing career pathways and the motivations and influencers around those career choices. To confirm industries’ experience and the implications of the current employment shortage, engineering companies, including labour-hire companies, vocational training and pathway organisations, were interviewed. These companies were associated with my company’s operations in Dunedin and Sydney. Data was gathered from four participant groups: Work-ready students; Industry; Labour hire; Vocational training organisations. Data was gathered on these four groups, outlining their relationship through the lens of my diary notes, personal experience, and self-reflection. The key outcome of my research project is that knowledge is empowering. In the context of career pathway decisions, the nature and extent of this knowledge are vital for the metal trades to be seen as a serious career option. The metal trades are made up of small individual businesses that do not have the resources or influence to promote themselves to school leavers against the backdrop of universities and high-profile trade recruitment machines. The recommendation of this research is to share that knowledge of the metal trades as a viable career through an industry body, which is not currently available. The industry body would provide a cohesive and influencing strategy to spread and promote the benefits of the metal trade to the public, schools, parents, and students as a serious career option

    Lepra erythrella (Pertusariaceae): A new addition to the lichenized mycobiota of the Aotearoa / New Zealand archipelago

    An investigation of the fl ora, mycobiota and lichenized mycobiota associated with the endemic Aotearoa / New Zealand plant genus Lophomyrtus (Myrtaceae) revealed a specimen of Lepra erythrella (Pertusariaceae). Lepra erythrella, though briefl y mentioned in a paper documenting the results of that Lophomyrtus study, has not yet been formally admitted into the lichenized mycobiota of Aotearoa / New Zealand. Th erefore, to complete that process in this paper, we provide a description based on the collection made from Lophomyrtus and a further one located in the Allan Herbarium (CHR). Th e addition of Lepra erythrella to the lichenized biota of Aotearoa / New Zealand highlights not only the lack of collecting of this genus in that archipelago but the need to critically examine that nation’s herbarium collections. We recommend that further research on this genus is carried out in our region

    Cooperative education: A successful PBL experience at Unitec, School of Computing

    Project-Based Learning (PBL) is a teaching and learning approach that provides students with skills to enhance their employability. In PBL, students can build their own project groups and work on real industry problems. They have an opportunity to engage, collaborate and communicate with stakeholders to identify and clarify a problem, propose a technical solution, analyse, design, implement and evaluate a project. Students apply the subject-related theoretical/methodological principles that they have learned throughout their programme of study into a practical project. This strengthens their learning as they get hands-on experience on the entire System Development Life Cycle. This presentation will focus on the implementation and coordination of the capstone project at the Unitec- Te Pūkenga, School of Computing, Electrical and Applied Technology. The Bachelor of Computing Systems students in their final year of study work on a capstone project, delivering five milestones: pre-project arrangement, proposal, implementation, technical documentation, presentation, and demonstration. Throughout the semester, students attend a series of workshops to recap what they have learned in their previous courses and enhance their technical and soft skills. All projects have individual and group components. The stakeholders' Satisfaction Index is used for assessing individual group members' contributions. Industry and academic collaboration, working on real-world problems, workshops, mentorships, and simulation of the workplace environment have contributed to students' performance, employability, and overall satisfaction. The institutional course survey results showed improvement in overall students' satisfaction from 4.5 in semester 1, 2021, to 9.1 in semester 1, 2023 out of 10. Through this presentation, I will share my experience of how industry and academia can collaborate to help close the STEM skills shortage gap. I will promote the use of the capstone project as an authentic teaching and learning method and encourage the industry to engage more in this practice

    Chronic musculoskeletal pain: Experiences of Somali women living in New Zealand

    OBJECTIVES The purpose of this research project was twofold. First, this project aimed to explore the experiences of Somali refugee women residing in Auckland, New Zealand and living with chronic musculoskeletal pain. Second, the management strategies used by Somali refugee women for chronic pain and those suggested to them by healthcare practitioners were investigated. DESIGN This research project followed Interpretive Description (ID) methodology. The experiences of six Somali women living with chronic musculoskeletal pain were explored using semi-structured open-ended interviews. The interviews were recorded in Somali, translated and transcribed into English. Transcripts were analysed thematically. RESULTS Four main themes were identified. The first theme ‘living with pain’, described emotional responses and functional limitations associated with chronic pain, and attitudes towards pain. The second theme ‘living in New Zealand’, explored how the shift in cultural practices influenced pain. The third, ‘searching for pain relief’, described strategies including physical activity, manual therapy, and religious coping that the Somali women used to manage pain. Finally, ‘navigating the healthcare system’ encompassed the challenges in accessing healthcare services (e.g., language barrier; limited appointment time). CONCLUSION Pain impacted multiple aspects of Somali women’s lives causing physical limitations and psychological distress. Challenges of adapting to a new culture compounded the chronic pain experience. Religious coping strategies appeared to have a positive impact on the overall health and well-being of the women. Understanding the challenges pertaining to language and consultation times, as well as an awareness of the cultural practices, beliefs, and values (e.g., use of salat/prayer and Quran for pain management, concepts of modesty and privacy) is necessary to deliver the best possible care for Somali wome
