AI design issues in education.
Toi Ohomai | Te Pūkenga engaged artificial intelligence (AI) developers in mid-2021 to help kaiako (teachers) convert existing subject content into self-generating adaptive learning material. The AI-generated content helped students learn at their individual levels and paces. Feedback highlighted improved student comprehension, and time savings and positive professional development for kaiako. However, considerations in the design and use of AI requires clarity about the range of open risks, exploitative processes in data extraction and training, and how these applications can encode bias and impact Indigenous and creator rights. This essay is an introduction to unresolved issues in AI design, and for decision makers to consider three key questions when choosing or using AI: how the application is built; who owns the knowledge created; and whose values shaped the training data and application design. Responsible use of AI requires very considered and transparent selection of any training data and model development, even prior to designing the AI application that is built on the model. Importantly, companies designing or deploying AI applications in Aotearoa New Zealand need to consider the Waitangi Tribunal recommendations for practical changes to the law, to include consent and protection for taonga and mātauranga Māori, to protect Māori cultural works, language, arts and heritage against unauthorised access or use
Exploring the application of Design Thinking to develop a work-based learning programme for hospitality and tourism
Due to the significant effect the COVID-19 epidemic had on employment and education within the tourism and hospitality sectors (Cameron et al., 2022; Carr, 2020; Fletcher et al., 2022) the purpose of this research project was to identify whether a different approach to vocational learning could better equip learners with the skills necessary to be work-ready.
This research aimed to explore the application of a design thinking methodology to the development of a work-based learning programme for hospitality and tourism that serves the needs of industry and learners. The following fundamentals formed the basis of the research.
• Explore the insights that can be gained by applying Design Thinking theory as a critical lens to evaluate teaching and learning initiatives in Tourism and Hospitality
• Independently apply knowledge and implement this into the development of work-based learning pedagogic approach in tourism and hospitality education.
• Evaluate the use of Design Thinking as a tool for pedagogic development through rigorous intellectual analysis, reflective practice, criticism and problem-solving.
Initially, the methodology was Design Thinking incorporated into a work-based learning environment. However, the structure of the project had to be modified as a result of my transition to another role outside of Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology. As this was a major pivot, I realised that by creating a reflective case study, I could discover how Design Thinking might feature in the study. Therefore, Design Thinking was used to explore the insights of how Design Thinking could be applied to a living event in an educational setting.
The key insights were that a Design Thinking approach to hospitality and tourism education enables learners to grow holistically because the skills are not technical rather 21st Century skills whereby the learners develop both soft and core skills. Additionally, there was evidence of increased levels of student confidence, motivation, whanaungatanga and interdisciplinary collaboration.
However, there were challenges and the following recommendations were made. Design Thinking can be messy and for Design Thinking pedagogy to be implemented into a curriculum there needs to be collaboration across a variety of sectors and you need tutorial staff with agile ability to cope with different needs. Moving away from a prescribed delivery dictates the need to develop a toolbox of resources and as traditional education is highly structured and prescribed compared with Design Thinking which responds to ‘just in time’ teaching there-needs to be flexibility without time constraints.
Through my experience as a practitioner, I have gained invaluable insights from completing my Master of Professional Practice. A key outcome from my research project is the ability to view and formulate innovative pedagogic concepts by approaching it through a Design Thinking perspective. My development has spanned the kaiako role I held within Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology, to the role as Ringa Whanake (Qualifications Development Facilitator) and a researcher. My new learning was a lived experience, unfolding and empowering changes to my practice
The role of curriculum changes in improving health outcomes : a feedback informed approach.
In 2018 Toi Ohomai set about redeveloping the Bachelor of Nursing (BN) curriculum. One key initiative related to year three students being placed in aged residential care (ARC) to focus on leadership, physical assessment and care management and to complete a quality improvement (QI) project. Three pieces of research approved and funded by Toi Ohomai over four years captured the outcomes of this change through student and new graduate experiences and QI project analysis. In 2023, through a student nurse educator, we sought verbal feedback on the experiences of a resident who consented to be cared for by four BN students across the first semester. Four unique QI projects were developed with this resident, aiming to improve their quality-of-life and integrating anaakitanga. Projects were negotiated and approved by key facility stakeholders and nursing management staff. This presentation 7 briefly captures our longitudinal research findings from the initial curriculum change research, followed by key feedback outcomes provided by this resident about their experiences and changes. We will explain how students can develop a deeper appreciation of research and evidence-based practice, as they experience first-hand the outcomes of their planned initiatives to improve health and well-being, with the goal of returning this resident back to their whānau and home. The research will be of interest to others involved in delivering nursing education and may also inform the current development of the Te Pūkenga unified Bachelor of Nursing qualification

Almost every discussion of housing amongst architects turns to a critique of design priorities in the speculative market – the product of an industry that supplies two-thirds or more of all housing in cities in New Zealand and Australia. These conversations become a litany of complaints about architecture-free house-building in the suburbs with their decoration-only louvres, their south-facing picture windows, their garages in the sunniest spot on the plan, and always the front door embellishments that provide “street appeal”.

An exploration of the experience of osteopaths managing individuals with endometriosis
AIM
This study aimed to investigate the theories, approaches, experiences, qualifications, and future recommendations of osteopaths regarding the management of individuals with physical symptoms associated with endometriosis. This study will contribute to the literature on the osteopathic management and treatment for women living with endometriosis.
DESIGN
Qualitative, descriptive, exploratory study.
METHODS
A sample of six registered osteopaths from New Zealand and Australia participated in semi-structured interviews over Zoom between April 2022 to July 2022. The recordings of interviews were transcribed verbatim and coded. Thematic analysis was conducted which identified three main themes and several subthemes.
FINDINGS
Thematic analysis of osteopath’s interviews identified three main themes: osteopathic management and treatment, osteopath's experiences, and perspectives and thirdly, recommendations and qualifications of participants. The study captured several subthemes linked to each theme.
CONCLUSION
This study provides in depth, unique, valuable insights on the experiences, clinical practices, perspectives of participants on their osteopathic management and treatment for women with endometriosis-related physical symptoms (low back pain, abdomen pain, and pelvic girdle pain). Endometriosis is a complex disease, and each individual may need unique treatment and management, including how an osteopath may manage an individual with endometriosis. In this study, participants preferred indirect techniques such as myofascial release (MFR), balanced ligament tension (BLT), over direct techniques such as inhibition techniques on muscles that surround the pelvis. Other techniques included visceral manipulation, iliopsoas and diaphragm release, articulation, muscle energy techniques (MET) and oscillation to the lumber spine and hips. Many osteopathic techniques, aims, and recommendations were aimed to decrease the sympathetic nervous system (SNS), reduce inflammation, improve lymphatic drainage, and improve immunity in individuals. Management also included advice on exercise and home recommendations, nutrition, pacing, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), supplementation or diet advice, stretching, yoga, diaphragmatic breathing, pacing, mindfulness, pain education and appropriate referrals. Participants in this study highlighted the experiences and perspectives, regarding osteopathic treatment for women with endometriosis. The study contributes to the endometriosis management literature and provides perspectives and experiences and directions for future research

How can techniques from contemporary garment design be utilised in designing a fashion retail hub to enhance the visitor experience?
ABSTRACT
The necessity for shelter gave rise to architecture. Nomadic cultures lived in tents made of cloth or animal fur before the development of architecture as we know it today; these same materials were utilised to make clothing. The parallels between architecture and garments are evident in buildings such as Frank Gehry’s Guggenheim Museum Bilbao and Zaha Hadid’s Heydar Aliyev Centre. Both use sophisticated pattern-cutting software to generate complex, layered forms akin to high-fashion clothing - sometimes referred to as body armour.
Fashion is simply the architecture of movement expressed through fabrics. The research project, “Fashion, Fabrics, & Architecture” aims to create a fashion retail hub using the design principles and motifs discovered by an in-depth examination of fabric used as building materials. In addition, this proposal will attempt to apply architectural concepts that support the purpose of the building. A fashion retail hub must address the relationships between retail, hospitality, entertainment, and public pedestrian space.
This project will treat the fertile intersection of fashion and architecture as inspiration and a design resource. Notions derived from fashion’s use of fabrics, textiles, and patterns and the tectonics of their connection will be assessed in the context of architecture. It is anticipated that characteristics drawn from contemporary garment design have the potential to inform all aspects of the design of the building.

Autonomy in remote working Scrum Development Teams’ productivity post-COVID-19 pandemic in New Zealand
The software development industry experienced both advantages and disadvantages of remote working, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, especially in terms of Scrum Development Team collaboration and productivity. While remote work is not a new phenomenon in this industry, extensive research has explored its impact on both workers and organisations, shedding light on various aspects of the remote working experience. However, majority of these research were conducted primarily during the COVID-19 pandemic, when mobility restrictions were imposed, resulting in limited access to schools, non-essential workplaces, and recreational activities. Workers found themselves confined to their homes, navigating the delicate balance between personal and organisational responsibilities, relying on autonomy as a benefit of remote working to manage their daily routines effectively.
Analysing the outcomes of these research was intriguing as it explored the unique circumstances of workers shifting to remote working with the uncertainties brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. Nevertheless, there has been no specific research conducted to investigate the impact of remote working on the software development organisations in New Zealand, particularly focusing on the adoption of the Scrum Framework and the productivity of Scrum Development Teams post the COVID-19 pandemic in New Zealand.
Employing Snowball Sampling and Purposive Sampling techniques, the study ensured a targeted and representative respondent sample. The collected qualitative and quantitative data were subjected to Thematic and Descriptive Analysis methods. Notably, Deductive Reasoning permeated the analysis process, extracting valuable insights and fostering innovative conclusions from the dataset. This encompassing methodological framework facilitated a nuanced grasp of autonomy's impact on the productivity of remote Scrum Development Teams in New Zealand. The research findings demonstrated that while remote work offers advantages like flexibility, autonomy, and access to diverse talents, it also presents challenges concerning team dependency, communication hurdles, and distractions. Despite these challenges, the Scrum Development Teams exhibited resilience and adaptability, maintaining productivity and achieving their objectives. The research underscored the importance of clear expectations, individual goal-setting, and the Scrum Framework in surmounting obstacles and amplifying remote team performance

Sleep abnormalities as potential early diagnostic biomarkers for Alzheimer’s disease: A scoping review examining the extent of empirical evidence
Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type of dementia, and its prevalence is increasing world-wide. This disease incurs a wide range of complications for individuals and society. No current therapies exist to cure or stop the progression of the disease once diagnosed within an individual. Many risk factors for Alzheimer’s disease are known, although one which has recently emerged within the scientific literature is sleep disturbance. The true implications of the research are at present, incomplete, yet the studies available have shown promise of the potential diagnostic and therapeutic value of sleep. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the extent and nature of research available discussing the role of sleep in Alzheimer’s disease development, as well as the potential utility of specific sleep disturbances to be diagnostic biomarkers for Alzheimer’s disease. A five-stage scoping review framework developed by Arksey and O’Malley was utilised to ensure an in-depth review of the relevant literature was achieved.
From a total of 2,821 studies, 199 were included into this scoping review and classified into four primary themes: 1) Mechanistic links between sleep disturbance and Alzheimer’s disease, 2) Sleep disturbance as a biomarker for Alzheimer’s disease, 3) Sleep as a therapeutic target for Alzheimer’s disease, and 4) Preclinical Alzheimer’s disease definition. This review has covered a range of studies that discussed links between sleep disturbance and Alzheimer’s disease pathogenesis. The findings suggests that certain sleep patterns may have diagnostic and therapeutic uses in Alzheimer’s disease; however, further experimental research is indicated to substantiate these hypotheses. The term preclinical Alzheimer’s disease requires a relevant and concise consensus regarding its definition in order for the aforementioned hypotheses to fully be explored for their respective potentia
