Gardening the interior: Odo Strewe inside the 1960s

    No full text
Odo Strewe arrived in New Zealand in 1938, a refugee from Nazi Germany. After release from internment on Matiu (Somes Island) as an Enemy Alien during World War Two, he married and moved to Auckland where he started a landscape design and construction business. Strewe had explored the idea of plants inside buildings in the very first house that he had made for his family in Glen Eden, Auckland in 1949. An Australian journalist writing about the house described the interior "with tropical paw paws almost coming indoors to join forces with the banana that is really growing and fruiting, right inside the house." Strewe continued to advocate for this disciplinary contest in subsequent years by writing about indoor gardening in New Zealand Modern Homes and Gardens and designing gardens that challenged the boundaries between landscape and the interior. This paper will explore the design strategies of two of Strewe's interior gardens in the 1960s as he developed this aspect of his landscape design practice. Multi-component health behaviour preventive medicine interventions to improve cardiometabolic health of airline pilots

    No full text
The occupational demands of professional airline pilots such as shift work, sleep disruption, fatigue, physical inactivity, and psychological stress may promote adverse outcomes to cardiometabolic health. Indeed, recent studies indicate similar notable prevalence of physiological, behavioral and psychological ardiometabolic health risk factors to general population estimates globally. Obtaining adequate sleep, consuming healthy nutrition, and engaging in sufficient physical activity are three lifestyle behaviors that significantly reduce all-cause mortality and have a positive effect on short and long-term cardiometabolic health. In a series of controlled clinical trials utilizing face-to-face and digital modes of delivery, the effectiveness of a 16-week personalized healthy eating, sleep hygiene, and physical activity program was evaluated for enhancing cardiometabolic health parameters among airline pilots

New Zealand public-housing project tender price forecast: Preliminary findings

    No full text
To make house prices affordable to first-home buyers on low-to-medium incomes, one of the solutions is the capped cost of public-housing projects. The accepted tender price forms the major portion of final project cost, and the level of the accuracy of the project’s tender price determines the possibility of achieving the cost cap. Hence, exploring and developing effective tender price forecasting tools is worth researching. To achieve this goal, the literature suggests that an understanding of the tools and factors affecting the accuracy of public-housing tender price is crucial. There is little to no research into tender price forecasting tools and the factors affecting the accuracy and efficiency of public-housing tender prices in the context of Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, Aotearoa New Zealand. This research aims to fill some of this gap. It is a first step in an ongoing programme of research that aims to develop a public-housing project tender-forecast tool

Comparison of chemical profiles of Kānuka (Kunzea robusta de Lange & Toelken, Myrtaceae) essential oils

HIGHLIGHTS • Pilot study statistically comparing GCMS and NMR data of kānuka essential oils. • Both analytical platforms deliver statistically consistent results. • Either approach is suitable for chemometrics analysis of kānuka. •Determination of absolute configuration of α-pinene as (+)-enantiomer. ABSTRACT Kānuka/rawirinui (Kunzea robusta de Lange & Toelken) is an endemic plant species in Aotearoa/New Zealand, which is still used today and traditionally by Māori. Chemical profiling of kānuka essential oils has been performed previously, although comprehensive studies are rare, as is the integration of multiple analytical platforms. In this study, we wished to compare the use of GCMS and NMR metabolomic methods for the analysis of eleven kānuka essential oils, and to apply statistical tools to evaluate how well the data sets corresponded. The main compounds detected were α-pinene (35-59%), p-cymene (0.1-19%), γ-terpinene (not detected-12%), α-terpinolene (0.1-4%), linalool (1-5%), limonene (2-3%), eucalyptol (0.1-7%) and sesquiterpenoid viridiflorol (2-9%). Use of Procrustes analysis to compare the analytical data obtained from a pilot study using both GCMS and NMR metabolomic profiling indicated a high level of correlation between the data sets, suggesting either approach is suitable for analysis of kānuka essential oils in an unbiased fashion. In addition, we also report on the absolute configuration of the major component of the essential oil, (+)-D-α-pinene

Creating resilience through empowering self-build strategies in a Myanmar refugee camp

    No full text
Currently, around 82 million people are displaced globally, and refugees are among the most vulnerable and in need of support. Around 1.1 million refugees from Myanmar are situated in large refugee camps between Myanmar, Thailand and Bangladesh, many living in such conditions for up to 30 years. Long-term design solutions are needed to solve the refugee crisis in Myanmar, and architecture has the solution for creating meaningful place-making for the refugees who are still trapped in these camps. Through a comprehensive vernacular design approach and a holistic solution, architecture can help mitigate the quality of life of refugees. The design project will be approached with the mindset of refugees' involvement and allowing them to create their own set of rules and use their own skill sets. Alongside this, a vernacular traditional construction system will be developed to adapt to those skill sets and be appropriate to environmental conditions. The goal is to achieve an architectural solution that provides a better living environment and enhances the prospects of refugees' lives. As well as re-imagining current camps to create a resilient and self-sufficient community where one feels a sense of belonging and can express, educate and prepare themselves for the future

INTRODUCTION Mark Cleverley became one of Aotearoa New Zealand's leading creative influencers through a six-decade outpouring of ideas and creations-spanning ceramics, architecture, graphics, type design, textiles... the list goes on. In 2014, in recognition of his significant contribution to the profession, Mark was bestowed a prestigious Black Pin by the Designers Institute of New Zealand. The same year also saw an exhibition of Mark's works, curated by Jonty Valentine, lecturer at Unitec Institute of Technology (Auckland), and hosted at Objectspace in Auckland. Sadly, Mark passed away in 2022, aged 88. To honour his legacy, we asked Jonty if he might offer some reflections and background on this extraordinary creative thinker. ...
