Uptake of offsite construction in NZ: A non-supplier viewpoint
Prefabrication and offsite construction have proven globally an alternate solution for the housing crisis and skilled workforce shortage. However, the pace of adoption of this innovative construction approach is slow in comparison to other OECD countries. The perception of non-prefabricated organizations as designers and contractors has a significant role in the uptake of prefabrication. This study aims to investigate the issues along with the main benefits and challenges towards enhancing the uptake level. An online questionnaire survey was conducted to collect the responses from practitioners having prefab experience and affiliations to professional bodies. The result shows there is an increasing trend in uptake level with a focus on prefab component-based and complete buildings. The top three benefits are reduction in the overall construction schedule, better building quality and high-quality control and reduction in environmental impact. The top three challenges are lack of expertise in prefabrication design and manufacturing, extensive early project planning and design, and complex code compliance and inspection process. Many strategies were proposed to address the critical issues regarding the uptake of prefabrication. This study helps educational institutes to learn the need of the industry for skills and knowledge for prefabrication. Further, prefab producers will gain knowledge about the non-supplier perspective which is helpful for supply-driven solutions and prefab uptake framework. Government bodies will get an insight into the industry practitioners' perspectives to formalise the policies and programmes

Low cost Codesys Raspberry Pi based virtual simulations and development of motion control implementation
Education Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) hardware systems tend to be laboratory based and entail a cost per unit and as class numbers increase, the cost increases proportionally which can ultimately limit class sizes. One option is the creation of virtual laboratory systems where the hardware component is replaced by simulation software.
The PLC is traditionally used for the purpose of control systems implementation and typically entails, PLC data acquisition, model development using Matlab, Matlab controller optimization to provide a tuned controller and then transferring the Matlab tuned controller to the PLC for implementation and realization, however advances in PLCs mean that a number of simulation tools are now available within the PLC environment. This presentation discusses a first order model simulated on Codesys (using the finite time difference numerical method) combined with a Proportional Integral and Derivative (PID) controller. The output of the simulation is then plotted on a Codesys based SCADA package. The system is used to demonstrate PID controller tuning in a virtual laboratory setting, this virtual tool (developed using the Codesys platform) is used to replace a hardware platform in a teaching environment. A physical implementation using a geared DC motor with an encoder signal that is fed into an Arduino Uno based signal conditioner; the signal from the signal conditioner is then fed into a MCP3008 Analogue to Digital Converter which then sends information (using the serial peripheral interface protocol) into the Codesys based Raspberry Pi PLC. The physical rig developed using Codesys is intended to provide a means to further develop the Codesys controller simulation via physical validation. A surprising potential benefit of this system arises from recent developments comparing Matlab with Codesys using the Simulink PLC Coder, these developments indicates that the Simulink PLC Coder introduces errors into the process and therefore the approach of model development within Codesys

Ethical Considerations of Replacing Clinical Hours with Simulation in Undergraduate Nursing Education: Means to an End, or an End in Itself?
In the current health-care environment, undergraduate nursing programs are expected to provide high-quality clinical experiences for students despite increasing difficulty accessing clinical placements. Expectations for newly graduated nurses have increased in the last few years, with an emphasis on “work-ready” graduates. At the same time, the availability of a variety of clinical practicum placements has decreased in some areas, increasing the difficulty of meeting the increasing numbers of nursing students required for future workforce planning, a situation exacerbated by the ongoing COVID-19 global pandemic. Nursing educators are caught between industry requirements for clinically prepared students and the regulatory requirements of their educational institutions. One solution being espoused internationally is substituting simulation for clinical practicum hours. Simulation offers many advantages, especially for patient safety, providing students with opportunities to link theory to practice in a controlled environment.
