A synopsis of Aotearoa / New Zealand Lejeunea (Lejeuneaceae: Jungermanniopsida) and new species in the Lejeunea epiphylla Colenso complex
We present a summary of the Aotearoa/New Zealand Lejeunea flora in a synopsis covering 21 species, 19 of which have been, or are here, formally described and two tag-named. Four species are described as new (L. amphinephea M.A.M.Renner, L. demissa M.A.M.Renner, L. perichymidia M.A.M.Renner and L. thalassoides M.A.M.Renner & Glenny) all have been previously treated as a complex under the illegitimate name Lejeunea epiphylla Colenso. These four species exhibit compli cated patterns of morphological variation and overlap in both size and shape as has been quantified in other liverwort species complexes. Lejeunea hawaikiana is proposed as a new synonym of L. apiculata, while Lejeunea gracilipes is retained at species rank. The 21 species comprise nearly the entire Aotearoa/ New Zealand Lejeunea diversity, but at least two other entities not encompassed by our synopsis are known from the North Cape region, and their affinities and identity remain to be resolved. A Māori Modern Learning Environment: Ko te akā pūkaea kia ita, ko te akā pūkaea kia eke!
This Kaupapa Māori research project investigates the ways that two Māori-medium pathways (bilingual and immersion) work together in a newly built Flexible Learning Space (FLS) to progress te reo Māori and the aspirations of whānau. This paper introduces the project that proposes the notion of the Māori Modern Learning Environment (MMLE). Funded by Teaching Learning Research Initiative (TLRI), this twoyear project is still in progress with the project only being at an early stage. The researchers are currently exploring how ‘space’ is understood and utilised by Māori teachers, students and whānau of two Māorimedium pathways, within the wider English-medium primary-school context. This pūrākau (case-study) project takes a strengths-based approach, and is based on the experiences, pedagogies and potential of Te Akā Pūkaea, at Newton Central School. The two whānau groups and Māori-medium pathways at the centre of the study are: Te Uru Karaka (immersion) and Te Awahou (bilingual). This research is intended to respond to the call from Stewart and Benade (2020) to ‘spatial biculturalism’ as we theorise ‘space’ from a Kaupapa Māori lens. Hence, the project is titled “A Māori Modern Learning Environment: Ko te Akā Pūkaea Kia Ita, Ko te Akā Pūkaea Kia Eke!”
Yacon concentrate NZFOS+, its phytochemical contents, health-related properties and potential applications
Yacon (Smallanthus sonchifolius), a sustainable foodstuff, is perceived as a functional food because it contains biologically active components e.g. fructooligosaccharides (FOS), inulin, and phenolic compounds that may provide physiological benefits beyond basic nutrition to reduce the risk of chronic diseases. There is a growing public interest in why and how to use yacon. Yacon, originally from South America, has been grown in New Zealand since 1980’s. NZ-produced yacon concentrate NZFOS+ contains the purest natural prebiotic FOS. Our study aimed to examine the phytochemical contents of NZFOS+ and its health-related properties. The glycemic index of yacon concentrate was measured by ISO 26642:2010(E) (n=10). Total phenolic and flavonoid contents were measured by spectrometric method. The chlorogenic acid content and phenolic profiling were measured using the liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (LC-MS). The antioxidant activity of the yacon concentrate and Manuka honey were compared using the cupric reducing antioxidant capacity (CUPRAC), Ferric-ion reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assays. The results indicated that compared to Manuka honey, yacon concentrate has a lower glycemic index (40 vs 52); a higher content of total phenolic (5430mg vs 744mg GAE/100g), total flavonoid (329mg vs 22mg QE/100g), and chlorogenic acid (11.88μg vs 0.08μg CA/g); across all assays observed, a significantly higher antioxidant capacity (CUPRAC assay, 892mg vs 52.6mg TE/100g; FRAP assay, 633mg vs 47mg TE/100g; DPPH assay, 383mg vs 22mg TE/100g, respectively). Yacon concentrate has proven potential health benefits and applications associated with the maintenance of health and wellbeing and prevention of chronic diseases. Further investigations are needed for human studies and new applications and use of yacon concentrate. Yacon concentrate (NZFOS+) has potential markets in the development of new food products and new dietotherapy applications, e.g. in the form of syrup, and functional prebiotic drinks

Establishing a strategy to create a safe community space in and around Selwyn Reserve, Mission Bay, Auckland
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE
Selwyn Reserve is a large reserve in the Auckland suburb of Mission Bay. The reserve is characterised by a stone house and fountain which sit close to the North facing beach. Selwyn Reserve is frequented by people from across Auckland’s isthmus and tourists to the region. The chronic issue which exists pertains to the alcohol consumed during hours of darkness in Selwyn Reserve, particularly during the weekend. The purpose of this research was to establish a long-term sustainable solution for the chronic issue which exists at Selwyn Reserve, Mission Bay, Auckland.
RESEARCH APPROACH
The research utilised Te Ara Tika (Hudson et al. 2010) as a framework, bringing Te Ao Māori into all components of the research ensuring the voice of iwi was present, heard, and actioned. The research was conducted utilising a sequential mixed-method design, with existent Police and Council data, influencing the questions asked in the interview phase and during a community led hui.
Un-tested PANDA Model
At the time of the research PANDA (Problem, Analyse, Nominate, Deploy, Assess the impact) was an untested method for solving chronic issues. Research findings identified what the issue at Mission Bay was, when it occurred, and who was involved. Additionally, the commitment of the community to solve the chronic issue is considerable. The approach taken to interviews and the hui was beneficial in ensuring that the various components of PANDA could be covered, to establish a comprehensive long-term sustainable solution for Selwyn Reserve, Mission Bay. The learnings around the approach will assist others seeking solutions for chronic issues

Practicum experiences are critical to the professional journey of every student teacher as they attain their teaching qualification. It is the site of induction and mentoring, intended to support the student teacher in their move from neophyte to graduating teacher. Practicum is considered by many to be the most powerful influence in shaping student teachers’ practice. Energy recovery in SWRO desalination: Current status and new possibilities
Reverse osmosis (RO) technology requires high energy input in order to extract freshwater from seawater. Improvements in RO technology have led to seawater RO (SWRO) becoming the dominant form of large scale desalination around the world. However, the specific energy consumption (SEC) of SWRO remains substantially higher than that for surface water treatment and indirect potable recycling, making SWRO less cost effective than other alternatives for producing potable water. Furthermore, where non-renewable energy sources are used to supply SWRO energy demand, higher levels of greenhouse gas are emitted compared with lower energy alternatives. The purpose of this paper is to review the RO process configurations currently available and their impact on reducing SWRO energy consumption. This paper highlights the main factors contributing to SWRO energy consumption and presents some of the commonly adopted approaches to reducing SEC in SWRO plants. The use of energy recovery devices (ERDs) in SWRO is explored and the relative effectiveness of the various types of ERDs in reducing SEC presented

How can architecture from Stanley Kubrick films inspire the creation of a film school?
ABSTRACT
The infinite permutations of film create numerous narratives and immense possibilities of aesthetical impressions. The visual ability of films to tell stories about our world and the imaginary realm envelops the audience, governed by the director’s aesthetic rules. Even if the director adapted stories from books, the aesthetic and structural elements would often differ from the mental image of the book readers. This stylistic idea of different interpretations of an element creates interesting discussion. Films direct influence on architecture highlights the symbiotic relationship between the two mediums. Architecture in movies are subjective in nature, and spatial dimensions are only what the director intends the audience to see; often, these architectural design contradicts what might be functionally real and what is not real, with this project serving as a “resolution of contradictions.”
Unitec Screen Arts presents an immerging role in bringing a new generation of New Zealand’s actors/actresses, directors, writers and crew members to international attention. The educational spaces for these students should exemplify innovation and creativity. With the current Unitec Film School relocated to building 78 and building 108 (see page 18), located on the main campus, the original campus near the Carrington Psychiatric Hospital will be demolished for the Crown’s new initiative for medium-high-density urban housing development.
This project aims to design a Film School on the Unitec main campus and develop a complete program to assist the needs and wants of both students and teachers of film-making. Exploration of films and film genres to create the design of the building and its aesthetic identity. The literature research on the merits of expression and necessitates for the students to have a more vital reference and connec tion to the study of films. Osteopathic management of dysmenorrhea: A qualitative snapshot of New Zealand women’s experiences
AIM
The aim of this study was to investigate the experiences of New Zealand women regarding the osteopathic management of their dysmenorrhea.
DESIGN
Qualitative descriptive exploratory study.
METHODS
A convenience sample of eight women with dysmenorrhea (age 25-46 years) from osteopathic clinics and support groups in Auckland, New Zealand, participated in semi-structured face-to-face interviews between March and July 2021. Voice recordings of interviews were transcribed verbatim and coded. Data analysis involved a thematic framework approach to identify Themes.
RESULTS:
Thematic analysis of women’s responses identified three main themes: impact of dysmenorrhea on women’s quality of life, osteopathy as an effective strategy for managing dysmenorrhea, and barriers to beginning osteopathic management.
CONCLUSION
This research contributes to the currently limited literature on women’s experiences of osteopathic management for their dysmenorrhea. While osteopathy cannot cure dysmenorrhea, it seems to be an effective management tool for the symptoms that accompany it. Alternative therapies such as osteopathy should be recommended to more women who are suffering in silence from this condition.
IMPACT:
Dysmenorrhea affects an estimated 45%-95% of women aged 13-50 years old worldwide. However, dysmenorrhea is still commonly disregarded by health care professionals and women themselves. This leads to women not taking their dysmenorrhea seriously and continuing to suffer from their symptoms, leading to other medical conditions later in life. Female participants in this research found osteopathy to be an effective strategy for managing symptoms of dysmenorrhea. These findings can help inform researchers and health practitioners on how osteopathy may be

Senecio pokohinuensis (Asteraceae), a new combination for an endemic species of Mokohinau Islands, Hauraki Gulf (Tikapa Moana o Hauraki), northern Te Ika a Maui / North Island, Aotearoa / New Zealand
