Pre and post-chemotherapeutic evaluation of haematological parameters in patients of Lung cancer. (A longitudinal study)

    No full text
Lung cancer is the main cause of cancer related mortality worldwide. It is an uncontrolled cell growth and proliferation in the lung tissue that can easily metastasize locally and follows lymphatic and haematogenous metastasis. In the advanced stage, haematogenous route is the main route of spread and associated with poor prognosis and an accelerated mortality. Smoking is considered as the root cause of carcinoma lung. Non-small cell lung cancer is the commonest type accounting nearly 85% of all lung malignancies. Our aim was to study pre-chemotherapeutic haematological parameters, evaluate and compare with post treatment haematological parameters. Two years longitudinal study included 50 diagnosed cases of lung cancer presenting to department of pathology. Testing protocol followed in the hospital laboratory by taking venous blood samples and testing for Hb, RBC count, TLC, DLC, PBF and Platelet count of all lung cancer patients. Conclusively, anemia, thrombocytosis and sometime neutrophilic leucocytosis occur simultaneously in lung cancer patients. The alternate etiologies for change of these parameters have to be ruled out, because tumor related leucocytosis and thrombocytosis have prognostic values, whereas anemia can have a weakly negative effect on tumor radiosensitivity

    Kidney stone/Renal calculus – A case study

    No full text
The prevalence of stones has been a matter of concern and has been rising over the past 30 years in an aging population. Many factors may contribute to this rise including life style changes, improved diagnostic abilities, longer life spans, changes in health related behaviors (e.g. consumption of soft drinks and animal proteins), environmental changes, or diuretic utilization). Kidney stones (renal lithiasis, nephrolithiasis) are hard deposits made of minerals and salts that form inside the kidneys. Kidney stones are caused by several factors and can affect any part of the urinary tract — from kidneys to bladder. Mostly, stones form when the urine becomes concentrated, which results in crystallization and clustering of minerals. If recognized in time, stones cause no permanent damage however, passing kidney stones can be quite painful. Taking pain medication and drinking lots of water to pass a kidney stone may help, depending on the situation. However, in other instances — for example, if stones become lodged in the urinary tract, are associated with a urinary infection or cause complications — surgery may be needed.Fortunately, the size and number of kidney stones can be reduced considerably through a variety of natural treatments. Switching to a healthier diet and increasing fluid intake is the first step, but it is important that specific foods and nutrients be included to not only prevent, but also dissolve or pulverize the stones. The present paper explains a case study where the kidney stones were dissolved using an herbal preparation (Joshanda)

Effect of different phases of menstrual cycle on nerve conduction velocity- A study from central India

    No full text
Objectives: The study was done to find out the effect of different phases of menstrual cycle on the Nerve conduction velocity in females. Methodology: 50 normal menstruating women with age between 18 to 24 years, with regular menstrual cycle were randomly selected from the nearest nursing college hostel and included in the study. Evoked electromyogram (EMG) was used to measure the nerve conduction velocity of median nerve in all the three phases of menstrual cycle i.e. proliferative, secretory and menstrual phase. Their mean values were calculated and compared in all the three phases. Results: When the mean of nerve conduction velocities in different phases of menstrual cycle were compared, a decrease in the NCV was observed in the secretory phase as compared to the menstrual and proliferative phase but the p value  was not significant.  Conclusion: Nerve conduction velocity of the peripheral nerves does not vary significantly during the different phases of the menstrual cycle. However these parameters should be kept in mind while conducting studies on nerve conduction velocities

Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate employers’ and graduates’ perceptions of the competence of dental graduates from the School of Dentistry, University of the West Indies (UWI). Method: Anonymous questionnaires were sent to employers of the dental graduates in 2013. Similar questionnaires were also completed by graduates of the class of 2011 and 2012.  Respondents were asked to rate employees or self assess the UWI School of Dentistry (SoD) curriculum’s 23 competency areas and 6 domains of dental practice including:  professionalism, assessment of a patient, establishment and maintenance of oral health. Results: Response rates of 48.3%, 100% and 95.7% were obtained from the employers, class of 2011 and class of 2012 respectively. The graduates’ self-rated competency means were satisfactory or higher (better) in all competency areas. Employers rated the competency of UWI graduates higher than average in all competency areas except temporomandibular joint/occlusion therapy, orthodontic therapy and dental office administration. Overall, the graduates consistently rated themselves significantly higher than the employers except for periodontal therapy, minor oral surgery, removable prosthodontics and dental office administration. The graduating class of 2011 rated themselves significantly higher than class of 2012 in most (15 out of 23) competency areas. Conclusion: Employers and graduates rated UWI dental graduate competency above average in all areas except orthodontics and dental office administration. UWI dental graduates have a better perception of their competency than do their employers. The School of Dentistry needs to pay particular attention to the areas highlighted and review the curriculum accordingly

    No full text
In ancient days, the word exercise (Riyazat) was defined only in medical books and common man was not aware of its health benefits, but in the era of modern medicine and social media, even a common man has become aware of the benefits of exercise and realized the value of it. Everybody is enthusiastic in knowing more about the benefits of exercise.Lack of exercise has been identified as the fourth leading risk factor for global mortality (6% of deaths globally).Riyazat has always been given the importance to maintain physical fitness and to avoid major health problems. It is also a primary and secondary level intervention as an adjunct to various systemic life- style related chronic diseases. Though it has been proved by many clinical trials that exercise can prevent from major lifestyle diseases, further research is needed to document the benefits of exercise especially in Unani system of medicine. Clinicians and patient must work together to maximize these benefits while minimizing risks for negative consequences. Identifying and preventing potential problems before hand can reduced   adverse out come and promote this important approach to healthy living.  We need greater Unani perspective intervention  for the common man to benefit at large, since it is equally effective, irreversible (without any complications), can be adapted to easily, and the most important of all it is economically feasible

    No full text
Traditional systems of medicine like Unani medicines are known to be in service to mankind since time immemorial. The knowledge acquired over thousands of years has resulted in many effective means of ensuring health-care. These alternative systems of health viz. Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha, Homeopathy and Naturopathy have rightfully existed side-by-side with Allopathy. Out of the 2,50,000 higher plant species found on earth, more than 80,000 are medicinal. Pharmacognosy is the study of medicinal/crude drugs derived from plants or other natural sources and is a vital link between alternative and allopathic systems of medicine. It provides a system wherein the active principles of crude drugs derived from natural origin can could be dispensed in dosage forms acceptable to allopathic system of medicine. Tannins are water soluble polyphenols present in plants and is the most widely occurring group of natural substance in different unani drugs. The present review will attend to some tannin containing pharmacognostic drugs. &nbsp
