Desmoplastic fibroma: A rare entity
Desmoplastic fibroma (DF) is an extremely rare benign intraosseus, locally aggressive bone tumor with an incidence of 0.11% of all primary bone tumors. The most common sites of involvement are the mandible and the metaphysis of long bones. Histologically and biologically, desmoplastic fibroma mimics extra-abdominal desmoid tumor of soft tissue. A 25-year male presented to outpatient department with increasing pain in left hip region since 2 months. Imaging investigations revealed a multiloculated cystic lesion in left femoral region.Curettage material was sent to our department. On histopathology, sections examined showed spindle-shaped cells without cytological atypia and abundant collagen production confirming the diagnosis of desmoplastic fibroma
Pulsed Doppler Ultrasonography Findings of Renal Interlobar Arteries in Pregnancy Induced Hypertension
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether Doppler ultrasonography (US) velocimetry in renal interlobar arteries is altered in women with pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH) compared with that in healthy pregnant and non pregnant women.MATERIALS AND METHODS: Flow waveform measurements in renal interlobar arteries were obtained in 30 non pregnant women, 30 healthy pregnant women and 30 women with PIH at 20-40 weeks of gestation by using Color Doppler and Pulsed Doppler ultrasonography.RESULTS: In the PIH group, the acceleration time values were greatly prolonged compared with those in the other groups. However the values of resistivity index were witin normal limits in all 3 groups.CONCLUSION: Acceleration time is one of the hemodynamic parameters of upstream stenosis in the proximal arteries such as main renal artery which might be implicated in the pathogenesis of PI
Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF) Gel as a Medium for Local Drug Delivery of Metronidazole
PurposeTo evaluate the efficiency of PRF gel as a vehicle for local drug delivery of Metronidazole to prevent theinfection of the operated site thereby eliminating the systemic loading of the body with antibiotics and evaluatethe effect of the PRF gel Infused with Metronidazole on soft tissue healing and bone regeneration andmaturation in extraction sockets following trans-alveolar extractions.Material and MethodsPRF gel infused with Metronidazole was inserted into bilateral trans-alveolar extraction sockets of mandibularthird molars test sites of sixty three patients. The bone regeneration rate was assessed radio graphically at 1week to 6 months and compared with that of the control group at same intervals. Soft tissue healing wasassessed clinically at every follow up and recorded in a questionnaire for the same.ResultsBetween July 2010 to March 2012, 63 patients were included in the study. Patients included 19 women (30%)and 44 men (70%) with a mean age of 25 years. The present study clearly indicates a significant improvement inthe regeneration of bone after third molar surgery in test sites treated with PRF gel with metronidazole ascompared to the control group post operatively with significant infection control and accelerated soft tissuehealing of the same.ConclusionThrough our study we derived the conclusion that platelet rich fibrin gel with metronidazole improved woundhealing during the 1st week after surgery owing to maximum growth factor concentration and antibiotic actionfor the first 5-7 days. It was also observed that significant improvement in bone regeneration (reduction indefect size) occurred over the entire course of healing as evident by the rapid and more complete bone growthobserved in the test group patients
Histopathological patterns of Lung lesions in Autopsy cases
Autopsy is an important and useful method to examine the conditions of the internal organs, so as to determine thecause of death. During this retrospective study, data of 120 autopsy cases from January 2012 to December 2012were collected and assessed. The histomorphological pattern of various Lung lesions were observed and described
A Comparison of The Aerobic Exercise and Strengthening Exercise Through Circuit Weight Training To Find Out The Effectiveness of Treatment After CABG
Background: Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG) has become a common operation for ischemic heart disease. The aim of CABG is to relieve the symptoms of angina and in certain groups of patients to prolong life. The Comprehensive Cardiac Rehabilitation programme includes advice on diet and modifications in exercise sessions, including aerobic and strength training, elements improved peak Vo2, cardiac output and parasympathetic nerve activity and energy conservation technique to improve the function and exercise capacity of CABG patient.
Aim: the purpose of the study is to compare the effectiveness of aerobic exercise and circuit weight training.
Materials and methods: A total of 20 subjects who have undergone CABG 3 months before were selected by purposive sampling accordingly to the inclusion criteria. They were divided into two groups, Group A and B with ten in each. The groups A were subjected to aerobic exercise for 3 months and group B was subjected to circuit weight training for 3 months. Pre and post test of exercise capacity were measured by treadmill and the results were recorded for comparison. The results: In the analysis, there was statistically significant difference between pre Vs post test results of group A and B. The mean values of group A was 5.6, group B was 4.4 and the mean difference was 1.2, which showed that there was a significant increase of exercise capacity in group A compared to group B in response to treatment. Conclusion: the aerobic exercise training was the most effective treatment for CABG patient
Pattern of Poisoning Cases in a Tertiary Level Teaching Hospital
Acute poisoning is an important medical emergency. The nature of poison used varies in different parts of the world and may vary even in different parts of the same country depending on the socioeconomic factors and cultural diversity. Management of these critically ill patients will greatly improve if the common causes of poisoning are properly define
Lingual Cellulitis Secondary to Sublingual Space Infection– A Rarity
Tongue cellulitis is potentially life threatening as it causes dyspnoea and dysphagia. Infection of tongue secondary to sublingual space infection is a rare entity. The tongue is exposed to considerable bite trauma while chewing, but appears to be comparatively resistant to infection. This may be due to high vascularity, thick covering of keratinized squamous epithelium, unique muscular anatomy and the lubricating, cleansing, immunological function of saliva and salivary flow. Although lingual abscess has been discussed widely in literature, there is less evidence on lingual cellulitis. The main objective of presenting this article is to report a rare case of lingual cellulitis, secondary to sublingual space infection in a non– immunocompromised patient
Oral Myiasis: Report of 3 cases
Myiasis commonly refers to invasion of live human or animal tissue by fly larvae of the Diptera family. Infestationof tissues of vertebrate species is pandemic. Myiasis frequently found in tropical and subtropical countries wherepoor hygiene, poor housing infrastructure, warm humid climate, and proximity with domestic animals prevail. Oralmyiasis is a rare pathology and a risk to the patient’s life. Its diagnosis is made basically by the presence of larvae.Herewith presenting 3 cases of oral myiasis of oro-dental complex
Teledentistry: What Is It Now and What It Be Tomorrow
Teledentistry is a comparatively newer field that comprises of telecommunication technology with dental care. Teledentistry roots chiefly belong to telemedicine. Telemedicine is defined as “The practice of health care delivery, diagnosis, consultation, treatment & education using audio, video or data communication”. Improvement in accessibility of health care & lowered health care are the two chief advantages over many of them that would come out as teledentistry becomes accomplished with & fundamentally changes, the practice of dentistry. Despite of having some barriers for teledentistry practice including legal, educational and insurance, the potential of telemedicine and teledentistry is tremendous
Depression amongst interns working in a tertiary care teaching Hospital in Maharashtra
Background: Internship is a crucial stage of medical school regarding student stress which can affect thepatient care negatively. Retrieving knowledge about presence of depression is therefore important in itself and iffound should be given attention for timely intervention. Aim and objectives: Aim of the study was to assess thelevel of depression amongst medical interns and their correlates. Methodology:The study was carried inGovernment Medical College, Latur, Maharashtra. A total of 75 MBBS interns participated in the study. Datawas gathered by an anonymous self-reporting questionnaire. The first section of the questionnaire focused ondemographic items, habit of any regular exercise/Yoga/meditation every week. The lingual problem incommunication with friends or patients was noted. Attempts for passing each year of MBBS and satisfactionregarding PG entrance result were asked. The degree of depressive symptoms was measured by BeckDepression Inventory (BDI). Data entry and analysis was done on Epi info version 6.0. Descriptive analyseswere performed to investigate the distribution of our data. Results:Amongst the total study subjects 40% weremales and 60% were female interns. Mean age of interns 23.93 years (SD- 1.06 years). Language barrier was aproblem in 6 (8%) students. Majority (88%) of the interns were hostelite. Majority of the students had passedthe examinations in 1st attempt. Only 17 (22.67%) of them were satisfied with the result of postgraduateentrance examination.About 16% of the interns had symptoms of depression. Dissatisfaction with postgraduateentrance examination result was significantly associated with development of depression, while regular physicalexercise was found to be protective for development of depression. Conclusions: Prevalence of depression was16% among the interns. Dissatisfaction with postgraduate entrance examination result was a risk factor whileregular physical exercise was found to be protective for depression
